History worth saving FEATURE STORY
The time is ripe to show a stronger appreciation for the enduring beauty and liveability of Canberra’s mid-century homes. B y J E N NY B ROWN

t could be a generational thing, or that their open structure, big windows and apt solar orientation make them adaptable to 21stcentury living, but enthusiasm for architectdesigned, mid-century houses is into its second decade and not flagging yet. The furniture and objects get good prices at auction and houses in high-value suburbs that can be defended by heritage associations from duplex redevelopment are hot property with Gen X-ers and Millennials, whose grandparents commissioned and lived in them.

Melbourne and Sydney are familiar with their modernist enclaves that throw up refurbishment stories warranting glossy mag covers. But what do we know of Canberra’s embarrassment of mid-century architectural riches? Mixing the best young architects from both cities with an informed, financially wellresourced clientele, it inspired private houses and those small, set-back apartment blocks arose to infill Burley Griffin’s grander plan. A grand-scale six bedroom, five-bathroom home in Yarralumla is on the market for $3.1
million through Berkely Residential. Its neighbourhood demonstrates who was walking around with blueprints during the 1960s when it was built for the deputy German Ambassador. Behind it is the 1967 Birch House by Noel Potter, and next door a home designed by John Scollay. Other modernist legends at work in Canberra at the time include Harry Seidler, Pettit+Sevitt, Roy Grounds, Dirk Bolt, Enrico Taglietti, Alex Jelinek, Malcolm Moir, Stephenson and Turner, John Andrews, Ian McKay, Michael Dysart and Robin Boyd.
YOUR AGENT Bill Lyristakis, Berkely Residential
“This is a sensational example of mid-century, post-war, international-style architecture.”
Because he saw it as a way to protect Modernist buildings from the 1950s to the ’70s, Canberra architect Graeme Trickett spent more than two decades documenting and – in the ACT – bringing to public notice lesser-known but no less important properties of the era. Bill Lyristakis, the selling agent for Schlich Street, says there is strong appreciation of Canberra’s mid-century stock among architects and people with design sense. Yet the advertising flags the shadow looming over any vintage property not under heritage protection: “sensational opportunity to occupy a fabulous modernist residence or rebuild to taste”. Buildings this essential to our story should not “be up for grabs”, he says, “because the best Australian architects were trying new things out here”.

A
force of nature. The term can be used to describe Zaha Hadid Architects, one of the world’s powerhouse design studios. It also applies to the inspiration behind a new luxury-apartment building coming to one of Melbourne’s most famous boulevards. Mayfair on St Kilda Road, between the central business district and Port Phillip Bay, is designed by Zaha Hadid Architects in partnership with acclaimed Australian firm Elenberg Fraser. Pritzker Prize-winning IraqiBritish architect Dame Hadid who died in 2016, was renowned for her innovative sculptural building forms, ditching straight lines and hard angles in favour of organic, fluid shapes. The curvaceous 21-storey Mayfair continues this tradition, bearing curves inspired by the Australian landscape, including looping balconies reminiscent of rolling waves.
Zaha Hadid Architects project director Michele Pasca di Magliano says: “Mayfair is an homage to the Australian landscapes and seascapes. Rolling waves were an inspiration for the fluid geometries of the balconies, which are all unique yet clearly related to each other, creating a dynamic composition.” On the facade, metallic materials marry with glass balustrades to create a building that is striking from the streetscape and highly distinctive for residents looking from the inside out. “The facade hints at the richness of the interiors, which build in exquisiteness from the main lobby to the common facilities and the apartments’ interiors,” Magliano says. Each lift serves only two residences per floor. There’s a 24-hour concierge and a rooftop terrace with private dining room, barbecue facilities and two outdoor spas. On levels one
to three, resident amenities include a lap pool, gym, sauna and cinema. A wine cellar is furnished with bespoke Zaha Hadid designs. The details continue inside, where curved finishes echo the exterior. Renderings reveal marble walls, inlaid copper in the hardwood flooring, carved freestanding fireplaces and copper shelving in liquid shapes. The building provides views to the Domain precinct, Albert Park, Port Phillip Bay and the CBD. Mayfair occupies a prominent corner position one block from the reserve surrounding the Shrine of Remembrance near the Royal Botanic Gardens, including the famous Tan running track. To the east is Toorak Road, home to some of Melbourne’s best shops and restaurants. St Kilda is less than four kilometres to the south and the city centre, including the main art and theatre precincts, is two kilometres north. UEM Sunrise chief executive officer Anwar Syahrin says the company has always respected and admired Zaha Hadid Architects for their ingenuity and creativity.
