It might sound strange, but I feel like I can relate to our gorgeous cover star Nicole Trunfio. Certainly not because I’m a leggy, glamorous model who’s strutted the catwalk for the biggest fashion brands in the business, but because I understand that feeling of “home” Trunfio gets when she comes back to Australia from her home in Austin, Texas. It was 12 years ago that I made Melbourne my home from a small country town and, while I love it here, there’s nothing like breathing in that fresh country air. ●

FIRST PERSON

““I am Dylan Singh” … and I’m an acrobat Mum was one of the original members of the

Flying Fruit Fly Circus, a longstanding circus school in Albury. She had me when she was 21, kept performing and touring and I was with her the whole time. I grew up on tour with Circus Oz, and with Rock’n’Roll Circus (now known as Circa). There are a lot of different personalities in the circus: no stereotypes, just a bunch of individuals. We didn’t really live in caravans, more hotels. It’s a bit hard to take caravans overseas on tour. Mum was always teaching me stuff from the time I could walk – I would have been five when I first learnt how to juggle. I moved down here to Melbourne after school and tried to figure out what I was going to do with myself. I grew up in the circus, but in my own brain I wanted to figure out what I wanted to do, find my own path. I got my certificate and did personal training for a while, but slowly I was drawn back into the circus world, teaching and doing workshops and all sorts of stuff. As an acrobat, I do handstands, flips, a lot of group acro stuff – which is tossing and catching each other – tumbling, handstands, building pyramids. If you’re an aerialist, on top of that you do anything in the air. On a trapeze you can get anywhere from a metre to five or six metres off the ground, depending on the equipment you’re using and the space you’ve got available. You want to be confident. You’re not going up to do stuff you’re not prepared to do – you’ll die. Sometimes you do worry, and wonder where your money is going to come from and how you’re going to pay the bills, but the work just, sort of, happens. I’m also a trainer with the Koori Youth Circus. It’s more an introduction to circus, there aren’t any tailored Aboriginal programs – the kids are aged five to 12. I also work with an all-Indigenous circus company, doing a show called Chasing Smoke. Is there much similarity between our shows, and Cirque de Soleil? Well, Australian contemporary circus is like hip-hop, whereas Cirque de Soleil is like ballet. I love it, but it’s very structured and pretty, whereas contemporary circus is more organic, raw and in your face. ●

PLANNING As Melbourne gets bigger, how do we make it better?

City of the future

I

n the 20 years since soil was first turned on the piazza at Federation Square, Melbourne has been ceaselessly mushrooming up and out from its centre-point. The once-controversial bold architecture in the heart of city is now all-too-familiar to most Melburnians, but the metropolis surrounding Federation Square is becoming increasingly unrecognisable. In 1998, Melbourne’s population was an innocuous 3.3 million, the height aspirations of the city’s skyscrapers could only be described as humble, and large swathes of what we now call Melbourne were still paddocks. Although many could have guessed there was change in the air, few would have imagined the extent. The Australian Bureau of Statistics, for its part, forecast the city’s population would boom to just over 4 million by 2021. We’re already a city of nearly 5 million people – and it’s only 2018. But if you thought the city has changed in the past 20 years, steel yourself Melbourne. Because the one thing we know for sure about Melbourne in 2038 is that we’re going to be a lot bigger. And we’ll need to keep up.

Changing how we work

Welcome to Australia’s biggest city If the current population growth rate continues – and there’s no signs of it abating – Melbourne will overtake Sydney as Australia’s biggest city in just five years, says demographer Glenn Capuano of data consultancy .id. “In the next 20 years or so, we’re looking at six-and-a-half to seven million people,” he says. For context, seven million is bigger than Madrid or Houston, and creeping up on Hong Kong.

Melbourne will face major issues by 2038 if jobs continue to be centralised in the inner city, experts say. “Currently, all the jobs in health, finance, legal, design, IT, education, even the major health precincts, are mostly focused around the inner city,” says Patrick Fensham, SGS Economics principal. That’s a problem, he says, because not everyone has equal access to inner Melbourne and concentrating opportunities away from big groups of people creates major social dysfunction.

Il l u s t r a t i o n

FRANK MAIORANA

It also means most of those seven million Melburnians could be cramming on our already overloaded roads and public transport to get to the same place for work. “The idea that everyone has to travel in one direction is not sustainable,’’ says Capuano. “We really need to start creating jobs where people live.” So by 2038, Melbourne will need other major job hubs. Instead of commuting to the CBD, we will be travelling to Monash, Dandenong, La Trobe, Sunshine or Werribee to work. Futurist Peter Ellyard says a huge number of us will also work remotely: “Cafes will be used as offices,” he says. “People will have their meetings in the suburbs and we will encourage staggered working hours, so the peak-hour rush will conceivably disappear.”

The infrastructure we’ll need There’s no doubt governments are attempting to solve present transport issues, with billions recently announced for road and rail infrastructure in state and federal budgets. But experts say these projects are addressing problems we already have and do little for those we’ll face when the city is a third larger. “If we limit our agenda to the [projects already on the table], we’re just in catch-up mode,” Fensham says. The North-East Link should help ease some existing congestion by 2038, and we may have an iteration of the West Gate Tunnel or a resurrected East-West Link – depending on which party wins and maintains state government. But many believe we will be less car-reliant by then, with congestion tolls deterring people from driving in the inner city. We will embrace buses to link Melbourne’s radial train lines, leave roads mostly for commercial

vehicles, and share data through smart cars and infrastructure to help ease traffic jams. The Metro Tunnel will be long completed but, on top of that, a City of Melbourne research paper says we will need two more underground rail tunnels by 2035. Melbourne Metro 2 would link Newport to Clifton Hill via Fishermans Bend, with trains running out to Wyndham Vale and Mernda. Melbourne Metro 3 would run from Southern Cross Station, east to Doncaster and north to Tullamarine. A Melbourne Airport rail link will be one of the most important pieces of infrastructure needed by 2038. In 10 years, the number of trips made to and from the airport is expected to compare with Heathrow Airport today.

The CBD As the city continues to expand outwards, the CBD will rise upwards. Southbank is already destined for Crown Casino’s Queensbridge Hotel Tower (323 metres) and Australia 108 (319 metres). A cluster of skyscrapers will also emerge on the city’s western skyline, including West Side Place (270 metres) on the corner of Spencer and Lonsdale

“Cafes will be used as offices. People will have their meetings in the suburbs and we will encourage staggered working hours.” PETER ELLYARD streets. Curved architecture will alter the monolithic skyline, with projects such as the Zaha Hadid-designed tower in Collins Street and the Beyonce-inspired Premier Tower on Spencer Street. Ellyard believes the CBD will also become more resident-focused, as many of the buildings used for office space are converted to apartments.

Liveable Melbourne If Melbourne can spread opportunities across the city, build a bigger public transport system that more people can access, cut car access and better use some of the space we already have, Federation Square will remain at the heart of a liveable city in 2038 (albeit with the addition of a controversial flagship Apple store). It’s a big job, but there’s no more amazing city up to the challenge. ●

For 40 years, Makmur has been operating out of a factory in Richmond, producing frozen food products including dumplings, dim sims and spring rolls. What really attracted me to working with Makmur was the fact that it is still very much a family-run business. The company creates local job opportunities and uses all-Australian produce in their products. Dumplings are a favourite for Australians. I’ve been working with the development team at Makmur to create a range of dumplings with modern combinations under the Golden Wok range. One of my favourites is the Thai chicken dumplings and I’d love to share this recipe with you. Do feel free to mix it up by using prawns or pork mince as a substitute. ●

1 garlic clove, minced 2 tbsp fish sauce ½ cup lime juice 2 tbsp palm sugar, grated ¼ cup water Method Start by making the dumplings. Place all the dry ingredients into a mixing bowl, add the oil and fish sauce, combine. Rest in the fridge, covered, for 30 minutes. ■ For the dresssing, combine fish sauce, palm sugar, lime juice and water. Whisk until sugar dissolves. Add the rest of the ingredients and set aside. ■ To make the dumplings, place the dumpling wrappers on a clean board, covered with a damp cloth to prevent drying out. There are many ways to fold ■

a dumpling and I used a round dumpling wrapper. Place one teaspoon of the dumpling mixture in the middle. Using your fingertip, wet the border of the wrapper with some water and fold the bottom over the top to close tightly. Make sure there are no air pockets. Now pinch the sides to overlap each other. Repeat for each dumpling. ■ Using a non-stick pan with a lid, place the pan on medium heat. Drizzle in some oil when it’s hot. Place the dumplings down and cook on one side for approximately 3-5 minutes. Add in ½ a cup of water and place the lid on and cook for another 3 minutes. ■ Remove from heat and serve in a platter with the dressing. ●

elbourne’s love affair with rooftop bars has turned into a long-lasting, committed relationship. This is evident both from the new watering holes regularly opening and the fact that some of the stalwarts have been around long enough to warrant renovation. Case in point is Bomba Rooftop, the bar five levels above its namesake Spanish diner on Lonsdale Street. The bar recently re-opened after a four-month, million-buck renovation. For rooftop bar fans, it’s time and money well spent. “We’d outgrown the space in some ways,” says owner Jesse Gerner. “People who eat in Bomba like to have a drink on the rooftop as part of the experience – if we booked the bar out for a function, a lot of people would cancel their bookings in the restaurant. We needed more room.”

To that end, the new look Bomba Rooftop has gained a new seating area with a solid roof, retractable windows and Insta-friendly views of Her Majesty’s Theatre backdropped by skyscrapers. The view is on par with the one from the original terrace on the other side of the bar. And there’s more. Floors and bathrooms have been replaced, the kitchen enlarged, a dedicated keg line and state-of-the-art ice machine installed and the sound system upgraded. Mercifully, the gorgeous copper-topped bar has been retained as has the creative approach to booze, which includes original cocktails, menus of gin and tonics, sherry and vermouth. There are also batched and bottled cocktails (try the Bomba take on the Negroni, the Negronita) and sangria on tap.

A

s the principal of Fintona Girls’ School, and a mathematics teacher with decades of experience, Rachael Falloon still gets advice, and from the most unexpected places. “I was in a taxi at the very start of this year. It was early January and I was going home from work,” Falloon explains. “The taxi driver said, ‘What do you mean you’re working? Don’t you have holidays?’ And I explained that I’d just started a new role and he went on to tell me this heartfelt story about his relationship with his mother and of her wisdom. ‘‘He said to me, ‘All you need is patience and to listen’. “And I thought what wise words, because there is so much wisdom and knowledge in people working in any environment, and schools are no different. “Taking the time to listen and getting to know the community is such an important thing to do.” At Fintona, Falloon has applied herself to getting to know the community since the start of the year when she took on the job of principal. ‘‘I was working around the corner at Camberwell Grammar as the deputy head. The reputation of Fintona, a leading girls’ school, really attracted me to the role. “I think the size also attracted me. I’m someone who likes to be part of a community and I think the size – being smaller than most – provided me with a great entree into my first principalship.” Before becoming an educational leader, Falloon was a mathematics teacher, inspired by her own female teachers to follow their career path. “I had fabulous teachers from my very first year at school,’’ she says. “I had women who encouraged and inspired me – pushed me in a whole range of areas. I think because I had such inspirational women as teachers it just seemed a natural course to follow them into education.” Falloon began her teaching career in Warragul, before moving interstate to Western Australia and then back to Melbourne, teaching in both co-ed and single-sex schools. She is passionate about the education of girls. “I think single-sex education and girls’ education is about the fact that anything is possible. There are no stereotypes, we work on the premise that you can be the best you can be, whatever your passion,”

R AC H A E L FA L L O O N

I HAVE LEARNT … ■

To never give up.

That everyone has the capacity to learn.

■ To never underestimate the small things you do; they may have a very large impact.

Falloon says. “We have a very strong science community here, we have really good specialist maths class sizes, we have girls who play football, girls who are talented musicians. It doesn’t matter what you choose to do, you can be successful.”

Though she has been principal such a short time, Falloon says she has learnt a lot about Fintona. “I’ve learnt it is a tight-knit community, that it is really warm, that the staff genuinely love working here and are, like me, passionate about educating girls.” And while she may have been on the receiving end of a lot of advice, Falloon also has some guidance to offer, particularly for those wanting to become a teacher. “It’s one of the most rewarding careers you can ever have. I think the ability to transform other people’s lives to watch them grow, to be inspired is a wonderful experience. ‘‘It is a job where you never stop learning.” ● MELISSA HEAGNEY

A rooftop terrace with city views is just one of the architectural flourishes that make this stunning home special. Masterfully renovated about five years ago by architect Travis Walton, it is a superb reinvention of a classic Melbourne terrace. The design makes excellent use of the space, the materials are luxurious and the end result is a stylish, peaceful family home in a sought-after location. The clean lines and timeless combination of charcoal and white used on the facade signal the restrained and sophisticated palette used throughout. On the ground floor, two bedrooms with built-in wardrobes open off the hall, followed by a spacious family bathroom. Three steps lead down to the living area where built-in storage is just one example of the thoughtful detail that has gone into this home. Sleek cupboards, and a bank of open shelving, look more like a subtle feature wall than storage. A wood-burning fireplace has a stylish marble hearth and the floor here is polished concrete. The charcoal and white living area opens via double doors to an equally stylish courtyard with built-in barbecue and a full-width door to the bluestone lane at the rear. Gleaming white, the kitchen with Calacatta marble splashback, Miele and Siemans appliances and a wide island bench is delightful. The first floor is a luxurious retreat for parents. The main bedroom suite, with its own balcony, has a walk-in wardrobe, en suite with an oversize shower and twin basins. A second living area, again with built-in cabinetry, opens to

the large, private rooftop terrace. The house has double-glazing throughout, hydronic heating, ducted cooling, an alarm and off-street parking. Overlooking Edinburgh Gardens, the house is in a prized Fitzroy North location with everything that makes the

suburb desirable on the doorstep, but the immediate neighbourhood is peaceful and quiet. Transport is plentiful and the house is just 3.8 kilometres from the CBD. Fitzroy North Primary School is just across the park and Fitzroy High School, with its striking, multi-coloured curves, is nearby. ● BEVERLEY JOHANSON editorial@domain.com.au Agent: Jellis Craig, Simon Shrimpton 0411 889 577 Price: $1.85 million-$2 million Auction: 1pm, August 18

This classic Californian bungalow, with its pillars, shingles and bay window, is a warm, welcoming home. Set on a large block of land with a triple lock-up garage, it has been renovated to make the most of the design. The main bedroom, at the front, has an ornate timber and tile fireplace. This room is followed by bedroom two, with a built-in wardrobe and the family bathroom opposite. Pine floors run throughout. The living area opens to a full-width deck and rear garden and the gleaming white Caesarstone kitchen has excellent storage. The house has heating and cooling and is close to shops, cafes, schools and Merri Creek parklands. ● BEVERLEY JOHANSON Agent: McGrath, Gino De Iesi 0418 328 062 Price: $1.05 million-$1.15 million Auction: 1pm, August 18

Sitting pretty as a picture is this double-fronted rendered brick Victorian home, often sought after and rarely found, offering immediate accommodation while delivering inspiring opportunities for the future in this blue chip location, REGENT. In need of a little love to propel the home into the 21st century the lovely layout delivers the perfect opportunity for venturing into a lavish renovation or extension (STCA). Welcomed by soaring ceilings the home reminisces its Victorian days with ornate features including elegant deep cornices and decorative ceiling rosettes & 3 fireplaces. Featured at the front of the home is a sunlit and spacious lounge with a stunning bay window, and at the rear of the home is the kitchen and meals area and a modern bathroom combined with laundry facilities. Situated on approx. 365m2 of land with side drive to carport, & the added bonus of the ROW at the rear, adds to the untapped potential of this Victorian home.
