There isn’t another Australian like Anh Do. He is truly unique. When the comedian, writer and actor went back to school, as an adult, to make more of his love of painting, he did something so few of us ever embark on. We get into the rhythm of life and leave old passions latent. But going back to the brush was a stroke of genius. His ABC interview program returns, and with his combination of wit, warmth and a gift for portraiture using “a whole bunch of cake-decorating knives”, he paints a fascinating picture of Australians from all walks of life. Journalist Luke Dennehy met him for our feature. ●

A portrait of Anh Do 4
DOM A IN REV IEW
“I am not immune to things going on around the world, but I also try to look for reasons to be thankful for everything that comes my way ...” Once the portrait is finished – after a few hours in front of the subject – the final result is revealed. “I am so nervous before [the portrait is spun around] because I really care what they think,” he says. Do’s distinctive style of portraiture comes from an old university job while he was studying law in the 1990s. “When I went back to TAFE, the teacher showed us a range of utensils you could use, from brushes to pallet knives, all sorts of things,” he says. “I remembered at university that I worked as a cake decorator in a cheesecake shop. So when I started painting again, I bought myself a whole bunch of cake-decorating knives. “So when I paint, it’s like I’m decorating a cake.”
JANIE BARRETT
I
t was six years ago that Anh Do re-discovered his love of painting, something he had first enjoyed as a child after coming to Australia by boat in 1980 as a refugee from Vietnam. Despite his passion, it was a risk as Do, now 42, found himself out of his comfort zone. “I loved drawing as a little kid and when you get to high school, people tell you, ‘you should take art because you will score well’,” he says. “But I didn’t pick it and I ended up regretting it for many, many years until ... I went back to TAFE. “I walked in and I’m 36, going back to paint with 18-year-old kids. One kid came up to me and said ‘You look like Anh Do,’ and I said ‘that’s because I am’. He then goes ‘Nah, but geez you look like him,’ and walked away.” Thankfully for the arts and entertainment worlds, Do not only re-discovered his love for painting but it became obvious that he had a real gift. Since that TAFE course, he has established himself as a respected portrait artist – including winning the 2017 Archibald Prize People’s Choice Award for his portrait of actor Jack Charles – and has made four seasons of the ABC show Anh’s Brush With Fame. Network executives search far and wide for natural talent to helm the show, and Do has it in droves. The format involves prominent Australians from many different walks of life sitting for a portrait session with Do, as he interviews them about their lives. The fourth series airs from April 17 and features intriguing conversations with personalities including Lindy Chamberlein-Creighton (who was wrongly convicted over the death of baby daughter Azaria), former Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke and singer Dannii Minogue. Chamberlein-Creighton’s episode, in particular, is set to make headlines. “She told me years after what happened in 1980 when Azaria was killed, her son, who was now a teenager, was lying on the ground and the family dog walked across his back and he sat up in a cold sweat and was freaking out,” Do says. “Lindy asked him what was wrong, and he said it felt just like the time a dingo walked across his back.” With his natural and warm delivery, Do always gleans candid and sometimes very emotional and revealing interviews.

verything Do does is with his own brand of charm, and without ego, which has made him a popular character of stage and screen. As well as being one of Australia’s top comedians, he has also acted, appeared on Dancing With The Stars, released many children’s books and penned the top-selling autobiography The Happiest Refugee. There have been plans to turn the book, an
Wo r d s
uplifting story but also one of peril and sacrifice, into a movie or television series. The Happiest Refugee follows Do and his remarkable family history, from escaping Vietnam to surving days at sea in a leaky fishing boat and becoming a famous comedian. “Like everyone, I have my up-and-down days, but if you look at things to be happy about, there are truckloads,” he says. “I’m not immune to things going on around the world, but I also try to look for reasons to be thankful for everything that comes my way, and for the life I get to live.” He now lives in Sydney with his wife Suzanne and their four children; Leon, Xavier, Luc and Summer. Family is everything to Do, and his kids help him with ideas when he writes children’s books (more are to be released this year). “We go on camping trips and say we drive for three hours, I’ll start a scenario, and just throw something out there ... like a girl gets lost in the forest, and we will go around the car and my kids continue the story, and all of the sudden we’ve got a new book called Wolf Girl that is actually coming out in July,” he says. Life for Do is not about sitting back and waiting for opportunities to unfold, and he is very happy balancing a variety of pursuits. “I always thought I’d get back into painting when I retired,” he says. “Then a really great mate passed away at age 50, and it made me realise, if I wait till I’m 65, you never know. If you love something, just do it now. “My son can play video games for eights hours’ straight, and it doesn’t feel like work. “I’m the same, I can paint for eight hours and it doesn’t feel like work, whereas when I used to be a law student, I would put off those law essays until the two hours before it was due.” ● ANH’S BRUSH WITH FAME \ New season starts on April 17, ABC and ABC iView.

America on a precipice T H E R E VI E W
T
ired of Winning was born out of a failure. A failure, Richard Cooke explains, of being in the US for the 2016 presidential election and not understanding the tectonic forces that would propel Donald Trump into the Oval Office. So, he returned in the lead-up to last year’s midterm elections to get a grip on not so much the Trump presidency, but how contemporary America is quickly slipping into decline. Avoiding the well-reported “rust-belt” states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, Cooke ventures into places like Huntington, West Virginia, where a quarter of the population is addicted to opioids. Cooke takes us to the hurricane-battered state of North Carolina, where local authorities are wilfully turning a blind eye to the impact of climate change because it could affect coastal real estate prices.
We get a disturbing insight into the racially charged politics of key swing state Florida. “Trumpism”, observes Cooke, “is driven by racism. It cements it.” Cooke laments that “mass shooting in America” is a phrase that now has the same “callous familiarity” as “bombing in Baghdad”. We are on the scene in the aftermath of the mass shooting at an Annapolis newspaper office, the 24th mass shooting of the year. It was June.
Michael Rowland is the co-host of ABC News Breakfast, weekdays from 6am on ABC TV

hile many of us may know of nasi goreng or fried rice, it’s safe to say not many have heard of nasi ulam, which translates to "herb rice" in English. This dish is traditional to Malay and Peranakan cuisine. Peranakan, which is my heritage, means straits-born Chinese that immigrated to the straits of Malaysia between the 15th and 17th centuries. Nasi ulam is usually served warm or at room temperature and the most common condiment to serve with it is sambal belacan, an aromatic chilli paste which can be purchased at most Asian grocers. Nasi ulam is a very healthy, yet tasty dish, packed full of herbs and is very easy to put together. The main challenge will be finding all the right ingredients. If one or two are missing it will not alter the taste of the dish too much. The beauty about this is that it can easily be made into a vegetarian dish as well.
JANAKA RODRIGUE / FOOD STYLING EMMA ROSEN
Nasi Ulam (Herb Rice) Ingredients (Serves 4) 2 cups of cooked jasmine rice, allow to cool slightly ½ bunch of mint leaves 6 betel leaves, chiffonade (thinly sliced) ½ bunch coriander leaves, chiffonade 6 kaffir lime leaves, chiffonade ½ bunch Vietnamese mint, chiffonade 2 red shallots, chiffonade 10g of fresh turmeric, chiffonade (use 1 tsp of powdered turmeric if fresh is unavailable) 1 lemongrass, (white part only) finely chopped ½ cup of dried baby shrimps (soaked and pounded to resemble fine breadcrumbs) 2 inches of salted dried fish (fried until crispy and crumbled) ½ cup of toasted desiccated coconut Salt to taste Pinch of white pepper
Method Make the sambal belacan by blending together the chillies and belacan. Add a little water if needed to get the blending process going.

This charming terrace house is at the heart of everything that makes vibrant Fitzroy North one of Melbourne’s most desirable inner-city locations. The suburb is rich in history and famous for some of the best dining options in the country. This home is just a few steps from Edinburgh Gardens, which has to be an almost perfect city park and a real heartbeat of the community. Surrounded by venerable 19th century architecture, and with the heritage footy oval and avenues of old trees, it’s a place where locals meet on weekends to picnic, play tennis, enjoy the skate park and playground, walk the dog or just lie in the shade and listen to music. Fitzroy North’s legendary cafes and restaurants are sprinkled all around and range from fine dining to casual vegan to wine bars, bakeries and hotels. There really is no reason to ever drift outside the zone with schools, a pool, supermarkets, mainstream and speciality shopping, wellness and beauty amenities and much more. It’s also a place where art is valued and large murals transform streets and lanes. On the weekend, Rose Street Artists Market showcases emerging artists and designers. This well-presented single-fronted terrace in tree-lined Rae Street is evocative of the early days of the suburb and wears its heritage well. Two bedrooms open off the arched hallway and both have built-in wardrobes. The rooms are spacious and light with high ceilings and new carpets. The living area has wide windows opening to a small courtyard at the side, exposed brick walls and carpet on the
