The waterfront’s revitalisation in the early 1900s saw the establishment of some of Melbourne’s most loved venues, including St Kilda Sea Baths, Luna Park, Palais Theatre and St. Moritz Ice Skating Rink. Designed by architects Beaver & Purnell in 1922, St. Moritz Ice-skating Palais was first built as the Wattle Path Palais de Danse, one of the world’s largest dance halls. As the venue for the first all-Australian dance championships, it featured some of the best dance bands of Australia and America. The venue was later renamed as St. Moritz Ice Skating Rink. The grand opening was on Friday 10 March, 1939. The arrival of celebrities to the much-anticipated event was announced on the radio station 3XY, with commentary about the interior and the evening’s goings-on provided by Norman Banks. The cost of entry was 5 shillings, inclusive of tax as well as skate hire for the 2,000 people who attended. Its rich cultural heritage, picturesque landscape and lively atmosphere make St Kilda the premier destination to live large, both now and into the future.

In 1994, actress Toni Collette made the awkward but terribly likeable Muriel Heslop a seminal character in Australian cinema. A runaway girl who busts a beanbag while canoodling with her boyfriend might not seem like an important figure, but the story and what she represents – feminism, empowerment, individuality – is more than a raucus punchline. As the Melbourne season of Muriel’s Wedding The Musical lights up the stage, meet its star – Natalie Abbott, who plays Muriel – in this week’s cover feature. You’ll be charmed. ●

COVER STORY
L
ate last month, Natalie Abbott was on a huge adrenalin rush at Her Majesty’s Theatre, taking in a standing ovation for her role as Muriel Hesslop on the opening night in Melbourne of Muriel’s Wedding The Musical. Rachel Griffiths, who played Muriel’s best friend in the hit Australian movie alongside Toni Collette (Muriel), had come backstage to Abbott’s dressing room to give her tick of approval. At the centre of the toasts for this new Australian musical was praise for Abbott; Muriel, a beloved character, is her first professional role. “Rachel told me how much she loved the show and how she really appreciated Stef’s (Stefanie Jones, who plays Muriel’s best friend Rhonda) and my performance, and that it showed the friendship and the bond that she and Toni Collette had in the movie, and we had mirrored that,” Abbott says. “I think that was one of the most special things that I’ve ever heard, especially coming from Rachel Griffiths.” Backtrack a year from that standing ovation, and Abbott, 23, was working in a surf shop in Sydney, trying to break into the world of musical theatre, receiving knock-backs time and time again. She grew up in the NSW coastal town of Sussex Inlet, initially wanting to be both an actor and singer, and so she chose to study something in the middle – musical theatre. Abbott moved to Sydney to further herself in the genre, and that’s when the tough auditions started. “It’s a hard thing to overcome as a performer, if you haven’t even had a resemblance of a break for a number of years,” she recalls. “It’s kind of hard to put yourself into the mentality that you are good enough, even though you haven’t been validated. “It’s been difficult.” The creator of Muriel’s Wedding the movie (and the stage adaptation), PJ Hogan, remembers the day well when Abbott walked into the audition room, one of nearly 500 hopefuls to try out for the plum stage role of Muriel. “To meet Natalie is to adore her,” Hogan tells Domain Review. “When she came in she was just so open and friendly, and awkward and funny. “We were all just thinking, and sitting and hoping that she could act and sing ... and it turned out she could do both.” Abbott, who had endured rejections in the past, remembers being more nervous outside the audition room than inside. “The creative team were so welcoming and so

supportive,” she says. “They just made me feel like it was OK to go and make a few mistakes. “I think that’s probably part of the reason why I got the role, because I wasn’t perfect at the auditions. I was so scared of what I was doing and they were so supportive.” That day she also made a friend in Hogan, and Abbott and the whole cast are determined to make him proud. “This is his baby, and he holds the story so dear and close to his heart,” she says. “We want to do a good job for PJ, just as much as PJ wants this to be as special as the film was. I think we’ve done that for him. “He is such a loving and caring person. To be doing this with someone as incredible as him and the whole creative team, it’s been amazing.” Muriel’s Wedding The Musical tells the famous fictional story of Muriel Heslop, who yearns for life to be like an ABBA song as she struggles with living in the town of Porpoise Spit. A couple of original ABBA songs feature in the musical score, but most of it has been written by Australian singer-composer Kate Miller-Heidke and musician Keir Nuttall. Heidke will get her very own stage moment next month representing Australia at Eurovision in Tel Aviv. From the show’s script to the costumes and its sense of humour balanced by darkness, it’s very Australian tale, and that is not lost on Abbott.

“I’m a strong believer in Australian works, and this [[Muriel’s Wedding] just goes to show that we do have Australian stories that can be told in an entertaining and fun way,” she says. “People come up to me after the show and tell me how lovely it is to hear our accents up there on stage, our jokes being told, our language, our vernacular written into the script. “It’s purely Australian.” Hogan grew up on the Gold Coast. The town of Porpoise Spit is based on Coolangatta, a Gold Coast suburb on the Queensland and NSW border. Released in 1994, the film – also starring Sophie Lee – was an unexpected hit for Hogan and it won many fans, including in the US. It seems many have identified with the hard-luck story of Muriel, including some of the more highprofile celebrities Hogan has worked with. “Julia Roberts once told me she was Muriel,” he says. “I just nodded my head and was thinking, ‘there is no way you are Muriel.’ “But apparently when she saw the film, it felt like she was watching her story.”
“I think that’s probably part of the reason why I got the role, because I wasn’t perfect at the auditions.” NATALIE ABBOTT
Produced by Australian company Global Creatures, which will soon open King Kong on Broadway, the Melbourne season of Muriel’s Wedding The Musical follows a run in Sydney last year. Hogan hopes that one day it will be on Broadway in New York and, judging by the ticket sales and the reaction in Sydney and Melbourne, it may very well be on its way. After every show and standing ovation, Abbott quietly retreats to her dressing room – always feeling a buzz – and then heads to her rented serviced apartment. “I go back to my apartment and maybe try and think about something other than the show, otherwise I’m going to be up all night dreaming about it,” she says. “I try to distract myself afterwards and then get right back in there the next day.”

Abbott may have been working at a surf shop not long ago, but given her critically acclaimed performance as Muriel, this could be the start of a very special career. There is nothing terrible about Natalie Abbott playing Muriel. In fact it’s something kind of wonderful. ●

Environmentalist, actor and son of film star Will Smith WHAT \ Launching his eco water brand WHERE \ Melbourne
ctor, part-time model, DJ and environmental activist Jaden Smith is on a crusade to save the planet – one sustainable choice at a time. The 20-year-old has famous Hollywood parents (actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith) but he wants to leave his own mark on the world. Smith, who founded eco-friendly Just Water in 2015, has created a bottled water product made from 82 per cent renewable resources that has just launched at Woolworths and
7-Eleven in Australia. Just Water’s carton is paper-based, the cap is made from sugarcane, and it’s 100 per cent recyclable. Smith says he is intent on giving consumers a choice when buying water, teaming with Tetra Pak to create the first of its kind. “Ever since I was 11 I started to learn about the environment and climate change,” he says. “It really bothered me seeing that as humans we’re contributing to the problem rather than helping fix our planet. I think most people want
this ink for the merchandise I make. “I want to be like Elon Musk. I want to do my bit through art and science and really make a difference. In 2010, Smith landed his biggest acting role in The Karate Kid and took advice from his father, who visited him on set. “My dad would use the Great Wall of China as a metaphor, Smith says. “He told me don’t go trying to build the whole wall, it’s one perfect brick at a time. Focus on what you’re doing here and now. Smith recorded his debut album Syre in 2017 and also wanted his merchandise to be sustainable. “Fashion is one of the biggest polluters and I try to combat that by wearing thrift clothing, Smith says. “[In] my newest merchandise collection I combine thrift clothing with a new release. I print my album cover on these old rock’n’roll T-shirts and it’s how I encourage others to be more sustainable.

hane Crawford is set to appear on the Today show on Channel 9, as he continues to change up his television career. Crawford, 44, is no longer working on Postcards or Kids WB for Nine, but he will still be a regular on The Footy Show, which has been completely revamped for 2019. After impressing executives during his time on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here on rival network Channel 10, the premiership-winning former Hawthorn footy player got the call-up to be part of the relaunched Today format. He will also be part of Wide World Of Sports on Sundays for Nine. “I’m just going to try and balance everything,” he tells Screen Time. “This year I’ll have an opportunity to try a few different shows, and be part of some shows that I really want to be part of.” Crawford says he had an amazing experience in the jungle on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, making it to the final three. “It was something I had always wanted to do,” he says. Crawford has four kids under the age of 12 and
admits life is very busy both personally and professionally. His role on The Footy Show will see him connect with the game’s fans and their stories, outside of the studio. However, it will be a very different delivery to Sam Newman’s old Street Talk segment, which at times polarised viewers. “There are so many wonderful stories and amazing people out there in football whose stories I think are really important for our show,” Crawford says. “I’ll be getting out and about, so it doesn’t matter where I am, I can still be part of the show.” He hopes the new version of The Footy Show with comedian Anthony “Lehmo” Lehmann as host and also featuring journalist Neroli Meadows, retired legend Brendan Fevola and tennis champ Dylan Alcott, replacing the longtime line-up, will last for many years to come. “Hopefully we can build this show and give it a bit of momentum as the season goes on.” ● THE FOOTY SHOW \ Wednesdays, 8.30pm, Channel 9.

pen-heart surgery and the subsequent recovery process can be a scary prospect, says Natasha O’Brien-Limmer, 36, who was born with a congenital heart defect that made it harder for her heart to pump blood around her body. “It was all very daunting … it wasn’t something I was at all ready for,” she says. But when O’Brien-Limmer underwent open-heart surgery at Epworth Richmond last November, she found support and community in an unexpected place – her fellow heart surgery patients Peter Toby and Elton La Porte. The trio formed an instant bond at Epworth’s preadmission clinic a few days before their surgeries. Afterwards they spent eight days together in the hospital, swapping recovery stories and helping one another through the healing process. They had become members of what people around the world call the “zipper club”, an informal term for
the community of open-heart surgery survivors. They also joined Epworth Richmond HeartSmart program, which was created to help participants recover from a cardiac event such as a heart attack or heart surgery. The trio attended weekly sessions, learning about ways to improve their heart health and manage future risk of heart problems. The program is run by a team of health professionals, including a cardiologist, cardiac nurse, pharmacist, dietician, physiotherapist, a health psychologist, guest speakers and volunteers. HeartSmart coordinator Nanci Thurston says the program focuses on education and exercise, but it also provides invaluable social interaction for people who have had heart problems. “The research shows that people who do these programs live longer and stay healthier, because they learn how to improve their lifestyle and their heart health,” she says. “And people do say that

coming to the HeartSmart program allows them to meet other people who have had similar surgery. It’s very much a social program too.” O’Brien-Limmer, Toby and La Porte were inspired by the program and their friendship to start a blog, zipperclub4lyfe.com, to tell people about their experiences and help other open-heart surgery patients. ● KATE STANTON

With all the refined glamour of a gentler era, this doublestorey home in the historic and highly valued Princes Hill district is majestic and magnificent. It was built in 1903, technically in the Federation period but its spirit is high Victorian and its presentation extraordinary. This is a stunningly detailed home, trimmed to stand out from the crowd. The pillars on the exterior have richly ornamented capitals, and coloured, diamond-shaped tiles contrast with the curved moulding on the pediment. Beyond the iron fence and the gravel and parterre garden, the arched entrance is delineated by heavy timber mouldings and leadlight glass. An intricate pattern of tessellated tiles is used on the path and verandah floor. Throughout the interior, the elaborate features of the era have been treasured and enhanced. In the arched hall, the dado is a rich tile pattern and the deep cornices above are emphasised by a wallpaper border. A bedroom and the dining room, both with marble and tile open fireplaces, lead off the hall. Beyond is a stunning kitchen, traditional in style with turned-wood pillars and the stove set into an alcove with a mantel above. Glass doors, open shelves and a farmhouse sink create a mellow, homely atmosphere. The living room opens via stacker doors, with arches of glass above, to the formally landscaped rear garden and paved outdoor meals area. This stunning room has a black and white marble chequered floor and sparkly chandelier. At the bottom of the garden a storage loft is located above the garage and workshop.
