Nine newsreader Alicia Loxley is a product of Melbourne’s RMIT journalism course; one of many leading reporters to have nurtured their ambitions from the humble classrooms off La Trobe Street. She traded in the dream of being a physio on the professional tennis circuit for the demands of a newsroom, where deadlines apply as much pressure as Roger Federer across the net. After welcoming her third beautiful child, Loxley has returned to the studio and the thrill of live news following maternity leave. She shares her path from Melbourne to Perth and back again in this week’s cover feature. ●

f she’d had her way when she was a teenager, Nine’s Alicia Loxley would have been a travelling tennis professional and not one of Australia’s most accomplished TV presenters. Growing up in the Melbourne suburb of Macleod, Loxley, 37, didn’t cut it when it came to becoming a tennis player week in, week out, so she had her eye on another career. “I wasn’t quite good enough to become a professional tennis player, but I thought a great way of living out that dream of travelling the world was by becoming a physio,” she says. “But I hated chemistry, and that was the only prerequisite subject for physio, so I sort of thought this is not the right direction for me.” Loxley ended up studying the celebrated RMIT University journalism degree, based out of building six on Bowen Lane, right in the middle of Melbourne’s CBD. The famous building has seen the start of careers for many well-known Australian journalists and broadcasters, in between a few drinks at the famous Oxford Scholar pub across the road. The old Oxford Scholar is no longer there, demolished because of the Metro Tunnel development. But it was a Melbourne institution, where students from all over Australia and internationally, including Loxley, got together to try and solve the world’s problems. It was at RMIT that Loxley first had her eye on a career as a broadcaster. She eventually moved to Perth and at 21 she got a job at the ABC radio station Triple J. A year later, in late 2003, she got the call to read her first ABC television news bulletin – and at the age of 22, was very young in industry terms. “I remember the first news bulletin I read, I came off and my heart was pounding,” she says. “I was so nervous, but I really enjoyed it.” The late Paul Lockyer was reading weeknight ABC News for Western Australia full-time, but he ended up moving back to Sydney.

The station gave Loxley the gig permanently in 2006 and she has never looked back. For two and a half years and still only in her 20s, Loxley read the Monday-to-Friday main news bulletin from Perth and also hosted the statewide drive radio program. It was in Perth where she met her now-husband, Melbourne-based barrister Kane Loxley. She eventually gave the plum gig up in Perth to come back home to live with him. “It really was a big decision because I loved my job, I had an incredible job,” she says. “It was a bit of a risk because obviously I was an unknown coming back to Melbourne and to give up such a big role. “But of course looking back now, it was the best thing I did.” Not only was Loxley back in Melbourne where her family is from, but she was also snapped up by Channel Nine and her career has continued to skyrocket. Loxley spent some time in Sydney for Nine including filling in as co-host of the Today show, before settling back in Melbourne where she is the established weekend newsreader. Even when Loxley was filling in on Today there wasn’t the almost daily scrutiny that breakfast television and the hosts receive. “Twenty years ago you might not have known who was hosting Today or Sunrise, whereas everyone in Australia knows them by their first names,” she says. “That has been a complete change. “I think it’s really hard for people who aren’t seeing that sort of publicity, that is a hard transition.” On the family front, Loxley is mum to Archie, 5, Ned, 3, and Ada, three months. Last month, she returned from maternity leave to read Nine’s weekend news, and hopes to be back to read the network’s 4pm weekday news soon. The Loxley family live in Melbourne’s bustling inner northeast, on the CBD’s very edge.

Place of quiet reflection Yarra Bend Park.
Must-visit for art/design/ shopping or culture Marfa Gallery and Lump Sculpture. You’ll find both at the Abbotsford end of Johnston Street, which is rapidly transforming and has plenty of great food options like Bodriggy Brewing Co.
“I love the sense of community and being so close to the city,” she says. Raising three kids aged five and under can be busy and tough at times, but Loxley wouldn’t have it any other way. “I love it,” she says of motherhood. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but it’s also the best thing I’ve ever done. It’s pretty awesome to see their personalities evolving. “Eighty per cent of the time the boys get along, and the rest of the time they are wrestling or doing something like that.” With work and the kids there isn’t much time off for Loxley, and that includes playing the sport she loved so much growing up, before her passion for broadcast took hold – tennis. “I haven’t played in a long time,” she says. “I’m hoping to get back into it when the kids are a bit older.” ●

was fortunate enough to visit the birthplace of the famous Pasteis de Nata – more commonly known as Portugese egg tarts – on my recent trip to Portugal. A short tram or taxi ride out of the centre of Lisbon, in the area of Belem, is a large bakery known as Pasteis de Belem. It is said that the recipe hasn't changed since the 1800s when it was invented by the monastery around the corner from where the bakery stands. It is estimated that every day 20,000 tarts are sold. My version of the original recipe has been simplified for the home kitchen. I've included a coffee glaze to brush over the top of the tarts as it reminds me of having a cup of black coffee with these little morsels. You may, of course, leave out the glaze. If you have leftover custard, keep it in your fridge and serve it with your cakes or puddings. ●

Pasteis de Nata (Portugese egg tarts) Ingredients (Makes 12) 1 packet store-bought puff pastry For the custard 1½ tablespoons plain flour 2/ cups milk, divided 3 2/ cups granulated sugar 3 1 cinnamon stick 1/ cup water 3 ∏ teaspoon vanilla bean paste 3 large egg yolks, whisked For the coffee glaze 1 cup icing sugar 3 tbsp coffee powder 2 tbsp water For the garnish Icing sugar Ground cinnamon
thermometer registers 100°C. Do not stir. In another small saucepan, heat the remaining milk. Whisk the hot milk into the flour mixture. ■ Remove the cinnamon stick and then pour the sugar syrup in a thin stream into the hot milk-andflour mixture, whisking briskly. Add the vanilla and stir for a minute until very warm but not hot. Whisk in the yolks, strain the mixture into a bowl, cover with cling wrap and set aside. This custard is meant to be slightly thinner than normal. ■ Preheat the oven to 250°C . Remove the pastry from the freezer and let it defrost so that it is pliable before rolling. Cut out circles to fit the base of a muffin tray but with enough overhang to push the pastry up the sides, starting from the bottom. ■ Fill each pastry cup 3/4 full with the cooled custard. Bake for 18-30 minutes or until the edges of the dough are brown. ■ Remove tarts from the oven and cool until just warm. Make the coffee glaze by dissolving the coffee and the sugar in a small bowl with the water. Using a pastry brush, apply the glaze on top of the tarts, then sprinkle with icing sugar and cinnamon to serve. ● ■
Method In a medium bowl, whisk the flour and 1/8 cup milk until smooth. ■ For the syrup, place the sugar, cinnamon, and water to a boil in a small saucepan and cook until a ■

From modestly functional to absolutely stylish, the extension and renovation of this mid-century Preston house has taken it to a whole new level of appeal and functionality. At the front of the light and welcoming, north-facing family home are two bedrooms with built-in wardrobes. In the second zone, the large and luxurious main bedroom has a fireplace, en suite and direct access via double doors to the front porch. Across the hall are the main bathroom and the laundry, with the kitchen at the heart of the house and open to the spacious living area at the rear. The living, dining and kitchen area have been masterfully designed in a style that is appropriate for the era of the home, but manages to look as modern as next week. In the kitchen, timber cabinetry, white subway tiles, stone benches and stainless steel Blanco appliances combine good looks with excellent functionality. The full-height pantry adds to the ample storage options and the large island bench makes food preparation easy. Glossy hardwood floors are laid throughout the living area and black-framed sliding doors and deep windows bring in the outdoors and plenty of natural light. The covered deck will make for casual and easy entertaining come summertime. The dining area opens to a smaller deck. The house is on about 724 square metres with a lush and well-planned rear garden with a cubby house and great areas for children to play. It has established fruit trees, a vine-draped pergola and a productive veggie garden. There is also a rainwater tank and garden shed. The lock-up garage
