Would I be wrong if I said it’s possibly in the DNA of all AFL supporters – no matter their colours – to secretly harbour a warm spot, deep beneath the duffle coat as they huddle at the MCG, for the Western Bulldogs? Perhaps it is because of the club’s proud Footscray origins and heartbreaking backstory that fans of all creeds can’t help but want the sons of the west to do well. Bulldog Marcus Bontempelli, the sensational All Australian midfielder who is a chance to hang Charlie around his neck on Brownlow night, shares with us his own proud footy origins in this week’s cover feature. ●

COVER STORY It takes

a team to raise an AFL footballer. Star Marcus Bontempelli gives thanks.

A

s a youngster, Brownlow Medal contender Marcus Bontempelli spent countless hours kicking the footy at his Eltham home, imagining an elite career; the dream felt so real, he'd even commentate as he played in the backyard. Bontempelli’s three sisters were more mad about horse show The Saddle Club than Sherrins, but there was a passion for footy elsewhere in the bloodline, via their cousin, St Kilda champion Nick Dal Santo. “I spent a lot of time outside as the girls were interested in whatever they were interested in, so I was always outside kicking the footy on my own,” Bontempelli, 23, says. “I would be in the backyard virtually as soon as I would get home from school. I'd throw my bag down and then be outside until dinner. “I would be kicking the footy or playing basketball just to keep myself amused – I never had control of the TV remote. “He [Nick] got drafted in 2001 and I was born in ’95, which meant I was about six or seven at that point. “Once Nick got drafted I took an even greater love and interest in the game, and followed him and looked up to him as a role model. “I think from that day forward I wanted to do what Nick was doing." Now one of the league’s supreme midfielders and an All Australian, Bontempelli says while his sisters were busy together, he would spend hours alone outside with the footy, commentating to himself and visualising what it would be like to win a premiership at the MCG.

FIELD OF DREAMS

Wo r d s

Remarkably, just a few years later, that's exactly what Bontempelli did. He was instrumental in the Western Bulldogs winning the AFL grand final in 2016, when he was 20. That same year he polled 20 votes in the Brownlow (accompanied to the ceremony by his mother Geraldine). Bontempelli was last week voted the player of the year by AFL’s coaches (the first Bulldog to win the accolade since it started 16 years ago), which has confirmed him as a hot favourite for the game’s highest individual honour at this year’s Brownlow count on September 23. The Dogs’ premiership was extra special considering what the club had endured two years before, with Brendan McCartney resigning as senior coach and captain Ryan Griffen moving to Greater Western Sydney. It was a time of upheaval at the proud club. However, Bontempelli says he and his teammates embraced the change and what it felt like to be the underdog.

Looking across the ground Bontempelli recounted, with a smile, just how important the club was to him growing up, and the long nights of training. “I remember being out here after training until the lights virtually went off, that was my thing,” he says. “On a Thursday night they would put on a barbecue and we’d be out here after training trying to kick some bombs from the 50-metre mark.” Bontempelli says he was lucky to be in such a strong junior team, and puts a lot of his professional success down to his foundation with the Panthers. “I think one of the big reasons why I fell in love with the game as a kid was because of the footy club, and because of the people who ran it, and the friends I made during that time,” he says. “I never felt I was on my own trying to achieve the dream. I’m incredibly grateful to the club for creating such a positive environment.”

aren’t far behind them in terms of going to games.” Growing up with three sisters, Bontempelli is a strong advocate of the AFLW and the leading role the Western Bulldogs have taken in the league’s development. “Hopefully every club has its own team and it virtually becomes the same competition as us, side by side,” he says.

“I would be kicking the footy or playing basketball just to keep myself amused – I never had control of the TV remote.” “I think some of the best stories in sport [are] coming through various levels of adversity that you go through,” he says. “In the short space of two years we really flipped the script on what had been written for us. It was a pretty special time." The other place Bontempelli spent hours of his youth was at the Eltham Panthers Junior Footy Club, just down the road from his family home. On the eve of the AFL finals series, he visited the oval at Eltham Central Park for Domain Review.

His siblings Olivia, Alanna and Sienna may have left their brother to his own devices while nurturing that big dream, but they are all incredibly supportive of his career. Their parents Carlo and Geraldine are also always by his side. “I've got a really close family and they support me through everything,” he says. “I'm lucky my mum and dad come to a lot of the games, and they try to travel and are probably there for almost 90 per cent of my games. “I'm really lucky, and the girls

“It’s so great for girls out there who now have a pathway.” With his profile and superstar status, Bontempelli has attracted commercial interests outside of football; one of those roles is as a friend of Mercedes-Benz Melbourne Vans. “It’s a great car to drive around in,” he says of his Mercedes-Benz X-Class ute. “It’s incredibly versatile but it’s a big car too. I'm a big lad so that helps as well.” ● ● mbmelbourne.com.au

Instilling a love of learning from day one

LEIGH HENNINGHAM

J

o Rowlands was born to teach. A natural organiser and a dedicated mum, she knew that she was meant to spend her working life in the classroom. Years later, Rowlands hasn’t lost her love of helping children to discover the excitement of learning. “I was in kindergarten when I first said I was going to be a primary school teacher. I never wavered. Primary school teaching was always my vision,” says Rowlands. For the past nine years, she has been a prep teacher at Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School. It’s a role she relishes, and she begins building connections with her students long before their first day at school. The school has a comprehensive prep transition program that sees future prep students spend time at the school doing activities and getting to know Rowlands in the months before the new school year. Rowlands also visits the children in their kindergarten or daycare centre to learn more about them and see the children in an environment where they feel comfortable. “The program begins with the pre-prep students visiting the school twice. They visit the prep classroom and we do activities,” Rowlands says. “I then visit those students – some will be at the Early Learning Centre here at Ivanhoe Girls’ and other students will be in kinder or daycare. It helps build a connection. When I arrive some of them run up and give me a hug. Others might still be shy and give me a wave. That visit is important as it gives me an insight into who the children are, and I learn about their interests. When they come to school, I connect them with like-minded girls.” Future preps have two more visits to the school, including a teddy bears’ picnic. Rowlands maintains contact with her future students during the summer holiday, sending them a personalised Christmas card and a letter before school starts. “They are so much more confident at the end of the transition program,” says Rowlands. “They’re often nervous during the first few orientation sessions and by the time we get to the teddy bears’ picnic they’re more confident and have made friends.” The prep transition program also supports

WHAT THE STUDENTS SAY “I remember when Mrs Rowlands came to kinder and I remember coming to the school before I started. I brought my unicorn to the teddy bears’ picnic, which was fun. I like doing handwriting and my journal and I like maths. Mrs Rowlands calls me a superstar mathematician. She’s nice and we learn by fun with her.” – Victoria, aged six, grade prep “I still have the Christmas card that Mrs Rowlands sent to me before I started prep. I liked her coming to kinder because if I didn’t meet her there, I would have been terrified on my first day! One of my favourite things in prep was journal writing on a Monday morning. I still like writing stories, drawing pictures, singing and dancing. I really liked prep because I didn’t know most things when I was in kinder.” – Lavinia, aged seven, grade one ●

parents, particularly those with a first child starting school. Parents have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and to visit the school, so they are also comfortable by the time school starts. “The prep year is exciting because children make

such progress during that time. I might have a child who can’t read and write at the start of prep and by the end of that year they write a whole page of work,” says Rowlands. “Parents are amazed at their child’s progress, too and it’s so rewarding to be part of that journey.” ● SARAH MARINOS

Building a new way of learning

T

here were squeals of delight when year 7 and 8 students at Methodist Ladies’ College got their first proper look inside the school’s new learning centre. The purpose-built centre opened in term 3 and is the key learning space for more than 500 students. It includes 24 configurable learning spaces as well as state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor learning and recreational spaces. The modern and sustainably focused design is the first stage of MLC’s master plan for the Kew campus. The learning centre has been planned for several years with staff and students having significant input into the new building. Cathie Ireland, head of Junior Secondary School, says the centre is an ideal way to help year 7 and 8 students transition from primary school to secondary school. “Developmentally, the move to secondary school can be a difficult time. Girls are reaching adolescence and they will be making new friendships, which is fantastic but can be challenging. They’re moving to a new school with new teachers and new subjects and have a different structure to their day – so there are many changes,” says Ireland. “Having the year 7s and 8s in one place is helpful from a wellbeing perspective as the younger girls can learn from the year 8s about navigating that first year of secondary school.” The vision for the centre is to create flexible and interesting spaces that inspire student learning. Its design formed part of a University of Melbourne research project called Plans to Pedagogy, about the significant impacts of spaces on learning. The centre is flooded with natural light and has distinct classrooms that lead to shared learning spaces. “You can have a group of girls working in the classroom and another group working around a table in the shared space. We have outdoor learning spaces, too, with some classrooms leading on to a terrace or balcony area,” says Ireland. Within the classroom, students can stand or sit at a high table or desk, sit at a more traditional desk, or work at whiteboard tables that are multipurpose, doubling as both desks and whiteboards. There are

CAT H I E I R E L A N D I N T H E L E A R N I N G C E N T R E

also breakout spaces. “We expect the girls to speak to their teachers about how and where they learn best,” says Ireland. “The classroom furniture is moveable so each lesson can be set up in a different configuration to enhance learning, and we are encouraging students and teachers to experiment. We set up a model classroom and trialled furniture to find the most comfortable designs and a great deal of thought has gone in to deciding what is in the classrooms and the building more generally.” The top floor of the learning centre features a green room, video-conferencing facility and a rooftop garden where girls can learn or relax at recess and lunchtime. “Soundfields with wireless connectivity have been

integrated throughout the whole building,” Ireland explains. “This enables a reduction of background noise to allow for more focused learning.” The centre embraces sustainability with solar panels, lights on motion sensors and a three-bin recycling system to reduce and recycle rubbish. Weeks after the opening of the building, students and teachers alike are thrilled with their new home. “I like walking around and seeing girls using the different spaces. For example, there is some tiered seating built under a stairwell and that’s become a popular spot for girls to socialise or to sit and read,” says Ireland. “The girls have certainly taken ownership of the space – and that was always the intention.” ● SARAH MARINOS

The Architects Choice

Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs formerly at the Royal Victorian Eye Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.” No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered.
