There has never been a more crucial time to have a filmmaker like Louis Theroux in our midst, with his documentaries into subcultures, uncomfortable realities, and the complexities of humans who exist on the fringes. As journalism becomes more about quick bites, in an increasingly busy world Theroux’s deep dives into some of the world’s weirdest subjects cover a path less and less travelled. He interviews without judgment, and yet his cynicism – when required – is palpable. He is our cover feature, ahead of a January 2020 Australian tour, including a Melbourne show. ●

“ I am Sandra Bader ” … a canine massage therapist In my old life, I studied anthropology and worked in
academia for a bit. But it wasn’t where I saw myself. After that I did a course in therapeutic massage, remedial massage and shiatsu for humans, and then migrated to dogs because I realised it’s really hard on my body working with humans. My dog was also having problems. He was limping so I thought, why don’t I apply what I know to him? There are so many massage therapists for humans out there, but hardly any for dogs. After doing a course in canine myofunctional therapy, I started my business, Paws4Paws, five years ago. A lot of my “clients” are old dogs with arthritis and general stiffness. But I also have younger dogs. Generally, their owners take them to the park, but don’t warm them up. There’s a lot of small injuries, pulled muscle fibres. I also do palliative care with old dogs. I’ve lost a few clients already over the past five years, which is very sad. I’m with them until the end and just try to keep them more comfortable and alleviate the pain. Canine massage therapy is slowly getting more popular here. But in saying that, a lot of people still don’t know it exists. So when I tell people what I do, they’re surprised and some people are quite critical at first. But then I explain the benefits and people see it makes sense. I go to my clients’ houses because it is easier for me and for the dog to relax. They know the environment and they know the smells and the owner is there. I am with the dog wherever the dog is more comfortable. It’s about building a relationship really. If the dog’s hyperactive, it can take three or four sessions until the dog really relaxes completely. With other dogs, their nature’s a bit slower and calmer. It depends on what the issue is, and if they’re in pain. It’s different with humans because I can talk to a human and say, “OK, this might hurt a little bit or might be a bit tender, just communicate with me and let me know what’s going on”. That doesn’t work with a dog, obviously. It’s finding that balance between doing my work and telling or showing the dog, “look it’s OK, I’m not going to hurt you”. ● ● paws4paws.com.au

ritish documentarian Louis Theroux never planned a career as a storyteller beyond his first journalism gig aged 21 at a San Jose newspaper, and thanks filmmaker Michael Moore for giving him the chance to seek beyond it. Theroux has spent the past 25 years making documentaries about cults, sex workers, UFOs, Nazis and polygamists and takes his viewers where few dare to go – face to face in some rather confronting situations. “I wasn’t that successful working in print. I mean I enjoyed people telling me their story and writing about their obsession in a news article, but after a few years I met Michael Moore and it changed my life,” Theroux says. “Michael saw something in me I didn’t see in myself and sent me off to do a report for his new show TV Nation and it was at that moment I thought ‘maybe this is something I could do’.” When TV Nation ended, Theroux created Weird Weekends for the BBC. It had a successful run between 1998-2000. He went deep into cults and religious groups who believe the world is coming to an end, teasing out the extreme point of view for compelling viewing. Then came When Louis Met from 20002002, interviewing various British
“I have always been interested in forming human relationships with people who are on the fringe.” “The subject of mental health has always interested me, and at times it can be very emotional to be that up close and personal in someone’s journey,” he says. “What I try to do is destigmatise mental health and yet try to find a way to get these people who are vulnerable and acting as normal as they can in their circumstances to not be afraid to show it.” Theroux returns to Australia for a new stage show, Without Limits, after he last visited in 2016. Hosted by Julia Zemiro and featuring special guest Shirley Phelps-Roper, who starred in his 2007 documentary The Most Hated Family in America, Theroux will delve into the making of his documentaries, his encounters with various subcultures and an extraordinary catalogue of work. “In divided times, the sensitive nuanced approached is even more valuable and you have to hold your nerve,” he says of his approach. “You have to go to difficult places and tell your story as best you can.” A compelling exploration of US college rape was a difficult documentary to make, according to Theroux. “The Night in Question was about allegations of sexual assault on campuses in America and following a guy accused of

celebrities. It included a segment with the late BBC radio personality Jimmy Saville who, years after it aired, was charged with 500 sex offences. He died in 2011. “I have always been interested in forming human relationships with people who are on the fringe and building bridges with them with the view of understanding them in a fuller way,” Theroux says. The 49-year-old father of three, who lives in London, was born in Singapore to an American father (writer Paul Theroux) and a British mother. He has written a new book, a memoir Gotta Get Theroux This about his life on camera, the inner machinations of his mind and his odd career choice. His memoir reveals a child who was anxious; admitting it was this that drove him to become totally work focused for a long period of time. “Nowadays, I really take each year as it comes,” he says. “It wasn’t until making Weird Weekends in 1998 for the BBC that I thought I would have a whole career making shows for TV. I have never allowed myself to think this is my permanent job. But I’ll take it.” Theroux has covered topics of mental health – from post-partum psychosis to the confronting nature of dementia and the importance of touch during memory loss – which have even left him lost for words.
rape,” he says. “We didn’t know where the story would go, but knew there was a moral and ethical tension that exists between the urge to respect due process and not rush into judgment and the seriousness of rape. “That’s the heart of the matter in what we do and what I love about documentary making. The fact those two completely valid ethical imperatives do come into conflict sometimes makes the process very difficult at times.” Theroux says making documentaries since US President Donald Trump entered the White House has opened up the playing field. “I think the world has changed a lot since Trump came into power,” he admits. “Trump was a twinkle in the eye of the American voting public all those years ago, and I think now we find a world transformed in his image in certain respects. “For me, as a student of weirdness, I feel as though my niche pursuit of people who are in different ways strange, dangerous or unconventional, have taken the White House hostage, which I think is fascinating. I think because of the nature of what I do, I have a unique insight into that in some way.” ● LOUIS THEROUX WITHOUT LIMITS \ January 19, 2020, the Plenary at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. ● mcec.com.au

Watch this space SPRING RACING Kennedy evokes its hallmarkstyle and attention to detail inside the Birdcage at the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
T
hey don’t call it “Millionaires’ Row” for nothing. Occupying prime real estate in the Birdcage brings lofty expectations of design greatness, and the Kennedy marquee – an international collaboration between the Australian luxury watch house, an Italian design firm and Swiss construction specialists – is bringing the dazzle to this year’s spring racing carnival. Kennedy has been a fixture of the Birdcage at Flemington since 2017, but this is the first year executive chairman James Kennedy has taken the leap to a trackside position. And he didn’t leave things to chance when it came to entertaining his guests across the four-day carnival, recruiting the talents of Italian design house La Cellula for a bespoke marquee that takes inspiration from the leather, wood and brass of
racing stables and elevates them to high-luxe. “We’ve moved to the front row this year and have embraced the fact we can create the height and space to get visibility onto the track. For us the marquee is all about celebrating a day at the races,” Kennedy says. A Melbourne Cup Carnival marquee is not something a company enters into lightly – the design and execution and wow-factor has to be pitch-perfect – and the all-new Kennedy marquee is a collaboration as meticulous as the workings of one of its famous timepieces. There was a telling synchronicity in the partnership with Swiss company Expomobilia, a long-time collaborator with La Cellula that brought the designs to life and had them shipped, flat-pack style, to Australia. The production specialists have

been heavily involved with the installation and execution of leading watch brands at the prestigious annual Baselworld Watch and Jewellery Show. “Expomobilia is one of the key players in Baselworld, so we had a conversation with them earlier this year, spoke to them about the Melbourne Cup Carnival and our pavilion and the rest is history,” Kennedy says. The two-level marquee with a track-facing firstfloor terrace was inspired by the elegance of the equestrian sports, while also obliquely referencing the Kennedy values of tradition and quality. “The materials and the colour scheme are designed to convey the feeling of entering a prestigious club, combining the art of design and equine grace,” says La Cellula designer Ottavio Di Chio.
Clad in a semi-transparent metal mesh facade, the pavilion plays with natural light, while materials – natural oak and brown leather through to the use of topstitching and burnished brass – recreate the warm authenticity of a racing club. A horseshoe-shaped lounge and suspension lamps tie in the theme, along with a striking series of equine photographs by Giana Terranova. The marquee’s Exhibition of Wonders – a showcase of selected timepieces from the world’s best watchmaking brands, including Rolex, Patek Philippe, IWC, Panerai, Cartier, Tudor and Ulysse Nardin – is not only a point of difference, it was also the area requiring the highest attention in design, Di Chio says. ● ● kennedy.com.au

HEALTH & WELLBEING
W
hile there’s a lot to love about spring, the warmer days can be a headache for allergy sufferers, with high pollen counts making life unpleasant for the estimated 3.1 million Australians with hay fever. Melbourne is particularly bad thanks to its geography and climate, and is known as one of the allergy capitals of the world. “We are surrounded by dry grass planes,” says Dr Sarah Morrison, ear and nose specialist at Epworth Richmond. “We have wet springs, which mean grasses grow a lot. Then, as we suddenly get hot, the pollens are blown around everywhere thanks to dry northerly winds, and there’s no humidity to dampen them down.” Help is at hand, however. From preventative measures to treatments including nasal sprays and even surgery, there are a variety of options available, depending on the severity of symptoms.
“If you think you have an allergy, try to determine what you’re allergic to,” Dr Morrison suggests. “The common ones year-round are animals and moulds. Seasonal ones tend to be pollens from either grasses or trees.” Experts have designed the Melbourne Pollen Count app, which offers pollen counts and even forecasts potential thunderstorm asthma events, allowing users to minimise their exposure. If you have asthma, it’s particularly important to treat hay fever. Asthma Australia notes that hay fever can make asthma worse and more difficult to control. “If you adequately treat your hay fever, you can reduce your asthma symptoms,” Dr Morrison says. “It’s really important, if you’re asthmatic, not to ignore your hay fever symptoms.” General treatment options for hay fever include nasal sprays and antihistamines. If things are

particularly serious, surgery is also an option, although generally as a last resort. “Don’t underestimate your symptoms. For milder symptoms, talk to your pharmacist. If they’re more severe, talk to your GP and then go from there.” ● ANDERS FURZE

Prevention or delay of disease Reduced risk of falls ■ Increased confidence ■ Weight management Anything that increases muscle mass and bone density as we age is vital. If we do nothing, we lose these things fast. When it comes to selecting the right exercise routine, you should weigh up risk versus return. Ask yourself, what is going to give me the best return and the lowest risk? Here are some key activities through different decades and their benefits:
ike most of us, the older I get the more I tell myself that age is just a number. I really believe that this is true. I have worked with thousands of people in their 50s, 60s and beyond and witnessed that biological age and chronological age are very different. I meet 40-year-olds who don’t take care of themselves who have a biological age of 70 and I’ve worked with very active, health-conscious 70-yearolds who live life better than most 30-year-olds. Ageing is inevitable so let’s embrace it and make sure we take better care of ourselves for a longer and better quality life.
■ ■
40s & 50s \ JUST SOME OF THE BENEFITS TO EXERCISING
Lifestyle changes (such as kids and careers) as we age often cause us to move less when we hit our 40s. This is a time in our lives where we want to ensure our workouts include cardio and some form of resistance. From circuit training to sensible HIIT
AFTER 40 \ ■ ■ ■

workouts through to walking, jogging, bike riding and swimming, the key to this age is some form of resistance, some form of cardio and consistency. 60s, 70s & BEYOND \
As you get into your 60s and 70s (remember, I’m generalising), you may want to pick workouts that are gentler on the muscles and joints. Swimming and water-based workouts, cycling and band resistance would be my picks. It’s also important to note the social benefits of staying active when exercising and socialising meet. For example: dancing, golf, tennis – there can be huge benefits to mind and body in these pursuits. ● ● 28bysamwood.com

For a family wanting to settle down in Melbourne’s inner north, it’s hard to beat this house’s location. There’s the station, for one thing: it’s just a few blocks down the street. Running parallel with Arthur Street, Station Street hosts some of the suburb’s burgeoning collection of cafes (check out the eggs at nearby CH James), shops including the post office and an independent supermarket. Fairfield Primary School is just a couple of blocks away. As for this contemporary house, we’re talking street frontage and 215 square metres of living space, spread across two floors (and a basement for storage.) Entering from the covered porch takes you into the lounge, which overlooks the front garden and the gated pathway to the side. That path joins the front of the house with the outdoor entertaining area out the back. Forget about using your courtyard only in summer – it’ll be available all year-round thanks to the retractable awning. Adjacent to the lounge up the front is the main bedroom, which has an en suite and a rather spacious walk-in wardrobe. The laundry can be found behind the bedroom, and so can a powder room, designed with guests in mind and in close proximity to the shared dining, living and kitchen area at the back of the house. The kitchen comes with a stone bench ideal for quick breakfasts on the go, as well as Miele appliances and Asko dishwashers. Upstairs are two bedrooms with built-in wardrobes, and

Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs formerly at the Royal Victorian Eye Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,â€? Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is deďŹ nitely the best part of my job.â€? No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered.
