One of the funniest skits by the late comedian Robin Williams was one on golf; invented by the Scots to purposefully foul up a player, he says, so “you feel like you’re going to have a stroke”. Most of the routine I cannot repeat here, because in keeping with golf etiquette I must mind my manners, but anyone who felt the rapture and frustration that comes with a game of golf will understand. This edition celebrates the sport as we approach the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne in December, with a cover story on the world’s most scenic courses – no stroke here, but it will take your breath away. ●

nybody who has swung a club knows the truth in Mark Twain’s lament that golf is a good walk spoiled. Yet, there is generally compensation – even as you hack your way through the rough and from bunker to bunker, at least you can take solace in the view. How a golf course looks – its layout and design, and especially its surrounds – has long inspired golf architects. Not to mention given rise to those fantastical calendars of imaginary golf holes, where greens protrude from the water beneath Niagara Falls, perch on a plateau halfway up Mount Everest, or nestle on one of Port Campbell’s remaining apostles, accessed by flying fox or rickety rope bridge. For players of all abilities, heeding the cry of “you just have to play at …” has turned golf tourism into big business. If you’re thinking of packing the clubs and jetting off to golfing nirvana, here are a few of the world’s most scenic golf courses to whet your appetite. ●
Pebble Beach, US S PE R O N E G O L F C LU B
Sperone Golf Club, France Every year more than 20,000 golf nomads make a pilgrimage to Corsica to play at Sperone. They take in the art and culture of historical Bonifacio, dine on seafood plucked straight from the Mediterranean, and play a golf course to die for. The par 5 16th offers a snapshot: tee off from a headland on the southernmost tip of Corsica, and gaze out over the luxury yachts and surfers dotting the Bay of Piantarella, and further still to the “Millionaire’s Island” of Cavallo. Heavenly.
The Golf Club At Harbor Shores, US This delivers in spades as a visual golfing Disneyland, skipping through distinctly different terrains of dunes, woodland, wetlands and holes that border the Paw Paw River and Lake Michigan. Connection to the local
Hugging rugged coastline above Carmel Bay south of the Monterey Peninsula, Pebble Beach Golf Links is touted as the best public golf course in America. (The roughly $750 it costs to play puts a bold asterisk on “public”.) The Pacific Ocean backdrop provides the magic, making holes 6-10 arguably the most famous stretch in the world, while the 18th, snaking around the water, has been a fitting setting for the finale of six US Open championships. There are four Pebble Beach Resort courses in all, with on-course accommodation.
Hamilton Island, Australia A very Australian golfing experience awaits at our only 18-hole course that’s on its very own island. Ridges and steep valleys dominate this patch of Dent Island paradise, with spectacular views of the Whitsundays and a course to stimulate golfers of all levels. Mini-golf, a driving range and lunch in the stunning clubhouse complete the picture.

National Geographic Traveller rates this Hawaiian gem among the greatest golf settings in America. Sitting above Hanalei Bay with 251 guest rooms and suites on offer at Princeville Resort, if you tire of actually playing golf you can always try yoga, or tennis, or snorkelling, or just lazing on the beach. Or perhaps a sunset golf cart tour – golfing voyeurism without the golf.

Old Head Golf Links, Ireland
LC LAMBRECHT
Choosing only one golf course to play in Ireland is like choosing a favourite child, although this Cork cracker makes a compelling case. Vertigo-sufferers be warned – perched on a clifftop 100 metres above the Atlantic Ocean, you’ll feel like you’re playing on the edge of the world. Old Head sits at the bottom of a teardrop of land just south of the food mecca of Kinsale, above rocks that now claim golf balls rather than stray ships.
It’s breathtaking, whether you’re perched on an elevated tee hitting to a green that seems to hang off the side of the cliff, or teeing off from a tiny island.
JACOB SJOMAN
Cape Wickham Links, Australia The visitors’ comments section on the Cape Wickham Links website includes a post from Californian brothers summing up their King Island golfing odyssey – “Q: Would you give up Cypress Point and Pebble Beach for the rest of your life to play only Cape Wickham? A: Yes.” Since opening four years ago (with Ocean Dunes added since), Cape Wickham has been wowing all who play it. Many pretend they’re golfing rock stars for a weekend, jetting in on charter flights from Moorabbin and Essendon.
Thracian Cliffs, Bulgaria Hailed as the Pebble Beach of Europe, this Gary Player-designed course has one up on its famous American cousin by offering views of the water (in this case the Black Sea) from every hole. It’s breathtaking, whether you’re perched on an elevated tee hitting to a green that seems to hang off the side of the cliff, or teeing off from a tiny island. Player is clearly biased, but says that in more than half a century of playing golf he didn’t believe such a setting existed.

ommon among the great performers on any stage is the panic they instil in us when their journey is almost done. Whether it’s Springsteen or Serena, we’ll queue around the block to witness their genius in the flesh one last time, fearing they’ll never pass this way again. The forthcoming summer of Australian golf offers much to tickle a fan’s fancy, not least the Vic Open at Barwon Heads in February, whose trailblazing mixed field format – where men and women compete for the same trophy and prize money – is being aped on the European Tour. But one name casts a shadow over all – Tiger Woods, who returns to Australia next month for the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne from December 9 to 15. For all the stars and storylines teeing up Down Under this summer, nothing comes close to Tiger. ●
Tiger Woods
Brooks Koepka
Nelly Korda
Ten years ago he flew home from Melbourne (after winning the Australian Masters) into one of sport’s greatest-ever scandals. His body has since fallen apart almost as spectacularly as his personal life, requiring multiple surgeries. Presidents Cup fans at Royal Melbourne will witness arguably the greatest sporting comeback ever.
Golf has evolved from pear-shaped men in baggy polo shirts to chiselled beasts with fitness regimes that seem better suited to Dustin Martin. Koepka is in the vanguard of these athlete-golfers hoping for a better outcome when hitting a small, stationary ball. Koepka will stride out among Woods’ Presidents Cup team as the current world No.1 player.
There was something novel and quirky about Petr Korda, the Czech with the buzzcut hair and scissorkick celebration, who lifted our national tennis trophy at Melbourne Park in 1998. Last year, it was the turn of his daughter, Nelly, in the Australian Open. She’s back to defend her title, limbering up for another leap, just like Dad.

Cameron Champ
By holding her nerve in Minnesota in June, Green became the first Australian to win an LPGA Tour major since Karrie Webb 13 years earlier. Webb was there as the 22-year-old sank the winning putt. The West Australian’s next mission? “To win on home soil,” Green says. She gets her chance at the Australian Open at Royal Adelaide in February.
Cameron Smith, the golfer, admits he might have followed Cameron Smith, the Melbourne Storm legend, down a rugby league path, only he didn’t want to get hurt. Smith made the right call, and heads to the Gold Coast in December aiming to become the first person in more than a century to win three consecutive Australian PGA Championships.
The fluffy hair poking out from his cap, and the awe as he accepted the 2009 Stonehaven Cup from his hero Greg Norman, are rings in the tree trunk of Scott’s fine career. Now 39, he is determined his 14th Australian Open tilt will bring a second success. He’ll have to work for it, as a stellar cast will tee up at the Australian Golf Club from December 5 to 8.
There’s no doubting the raw appeal of golf’s monster drivers. Champ is a 24-year-old whose numbers – for clubhead speed, ball speed, pure distance – are off the charts. Winning a second PGA Tour title in September showed his all-round game is growing. In December, he’ll make his Down Under debut in the Australian PGA at Royal Pines.

he dreaded “second novel syndrome” is something that haunts authors of wildly successful debut books. For Christian White, the challenge of building on the success of 2018’s The Nowhere Child was very real, but with The Wife and the Widow the Melbourne writer simply confirms his status as one of Australia’s most promising new storytellers. Set on a fictional island off the Bellarine Peninsula, the book interweaves the stories of Kate, a widow who learns about her husband’s elaborate secret life; and Abby, a long-time island resident whose life is turned upside-down as she grapples with mounting evidence that her husband is a killer. White expertly sets up both plot lines and leads the reader towards one of the most mind-blowing twists I have ever experienced in a novel.
8
DOM A IN REV IEW
The central question posed by the book is “How well do we know the people we love?”, with both Kate and Abby forced into uncertain and uncomfortable new worlds courtesy of the men they thought they knew all too well. The characters are all finely drawn. We first meet Abby living a contented island life in a ramshackle house, raising two teenagers and dabbling in taxidermy (“It was as messy as it was meditative”). Kate is enjoying a comfortable, middle-class life in Caulfield, until her husband’s disappearance destroys any sense of security she had.

FITZROY NORTH \ 188 MILLER STREET 5

The good citizens of Melbourne’s inner north often have to weigh up the convenience of location with the comforts afforded by having more space. Residents of Fitzroy, Brunswick, Collingwood et al. might not inhabit the biggest of floor plans, but they more than make up for that fact with, well, the sheer convenience of living in the inner city. Occasionally, though, a house comes along that offers space and location. That’s certainly the case for 188 Miller Street, a grand Federation house that can be found just off St Georges Road in Fitzroy North. Head past the white picket fence and into the entrance hallway to find a bedroom to the east and lounge room to the west, both with fireplaces. That lounge could also work nicely as a bedroom should it be required. Further inside, you’ll find the house’s three other bedrooms, a central bathroom and laundry with bathroom. There’s a powder room here that’s ideally located for guests to use, when you’ve invited them over to make the most of this house’s real centrepiece, which is found out the back. Here, at the end of the hallway, is where you’ll find an open-plan living and dining area that flows nicely into the outdoor entertaining deck to the rear. The kitchen features tiled splashbacks, Ilve oven, Qasair rangehood and Miele dishwasher. So location: tick, space: tick, but what about the details? Other aspects to be found throughout this house include ornate plasterwork, polished concrete and timber flooring, and evaporative cooling. Then there’s the fully automated pool in the backyard. It runs to 10 metres and is protected by high fences and an

Dr. Tony Stubbs Eye Surgeon MB BS BSc(Hons)B Med Sc MS FRANZCO Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs formerly at the Royal Victorian Eye Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,â€? Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is deďŹ nitely the best part of my job.â€? No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered.
