The AFLW players possess the kind of courage I hope will develop in all the young women I know, particularly my little niece. She, unlike me, has a chance for football – the sport I loved growing up and still love today – to be much more in her life, if she chooses. The women’s league season started this month and the curtain-raising Geelong and Collingwood clash drew more than 18,000 fans. North Melbourne and Geelong are new teams this season, and in this edition we meet the Kangaroos’ Kaitlyn Ashmore, whose passion for the blue and white stripes runs deep. ●

FIRST PERSON

“ I am James Tutton ” … and I’m an entrepreneur who helps people meditate I always knew that I was unemployable. I didn’t take direction from other people at all well, so I think I’ve always been aware that I’d work for myself. When I was at university I worked as a doorman and sold clothing at markets, and in my final year I started Moonlight Cinema, which I sold to a public company in my early 30s. Then, I had an entertainment business in LA before coming back to Australia and going into business with Jeff Provan at Neometro about 10 years ago. About five and a half years ago I established Smiling Mind with Jane Martino, which is a notfor-profit focused on preventative mental health tools for young people, specifically based in mindfulness meditation. We have 3.5 million downloads of our app, we’re working with hundreds of thousands of students, and have a workplace program that’s used in corporate organisations across Australia. I say this jokingly, but I went bald at 22 and was driving a Porsche in my mid-20s, so I’d done the traditional mid-life crisis things really early on. I was 39 when we started Smiling Mind and I thought, “Right, I’m going to have a positive mid-life crisis”, which, for me, involved putting my energy into something that could have a significant and beneficial social impact. I’ve also had a long-term interest in mental health. I’ve seen people close to me experience schizophrenia and post-natal depression. I wouldn’t for a second say that mindfulness and meditation are a silver bullet, but it’s clinically shown that they can lower the risk of the onset of a whole gamut of mental heath conditions. Making money is not my goal in life. I’m far more interested in using what skills I have as an entrepreneur to have a positive social impact. That’s not to say I don’t have to pay my school fees, because I do, but I didn’t want my children to go, “...that’s all he did with his life”. I felt a responsibility to show them that if you have some entrepreneurial skills and chutzpah, you can do really positive social things. ●

ith the reopening of iconic St Kilda music venue The Esplanade Hotel comes an ode to its former glory, a future vision and proof that rock ’n’ roll is here to stay. The 140-year-old Victorian heritage-listed building now comes with a green room corridor that weaves from backstage to the main stage with full view for those dining in the Espy kitchen, too. There’s no FOMO to be had either, because you now score a side eye of backstage from the comforts of this distillery and barrel room-dressed dining area. It’s a nice touch for those keen to witness the acts in full flight, and as close as you’ll get to your rock star moment, unless you’re with the band. According to Techne architect Justin Northrop, the renovation had to factor in the venue’s past, while also reviving an icon that could be so much

The Gershwin Room returns to its finest days, with the help of a new black steel beam to hold the structure in place. It’s where Beasts of Bourbon, Things of Stone and Wood, Yothu Yindi and Men at Work all played and where Tex Perkins, Tim Rogers and ABC radio show announcer and co-host of recently cancelled RocKwiz Brian Nankervis have all taken to the stage since it reopened late last year. “It is one of the only heritage listings where the usage is integral to the building,” Northrop explains. “It has to be a live music venue – that is part of its DNA, but it reaches back further than live music. Retelling those stories is a big part of this renovation for us,” he says. Nankervis started doing comedy in the public bar in the mid-90s with his character Raymond J. Bartholomeuz. The room’s renovation comes with original gig posters that decorate the walls in an ode

THE LEGEND LIVES ON more. The venue now comes with 12 bars, two restaurants and three music stages that sprawl across six levels and cater up to 1700 guests. The former piano room bar is now a modern podcast studio open to anyone keen for a digital hook-up. The second level and those above it have opened to the public for the first time. This is where the Ghost of Alfred Felton bar – Felton was a former resident, entrepreneur, chemist and philanthropist who lived at the Espy from 1892 until his death in 1904 – is located. There’s an ode to his obsessions with the three rooms covering a library with old books, another filled with art on the walls and an apothecary-inspired bar, hinting at Felton’s drug-dispensing days. New Cantonese restaurant and cocktail bar Mya Tiger is a nod to the rise of Chinese restaurants that appeared in St Kilda during the 1850s gold rush era. With that in mind, there’s a colonial style in place with a nod to chinoiserie. “The colonial styling and Victorian cues really come through in this dining space,” Northrop says. “We’ve sourced antique tables and artefacts to hint to that old world while also referencing Singapore’s famously grand dining and hotel venue Raffles.”

to its former self, featuring everyone from Mark Seymour to Cosmic Psychos. Nankervis says the Espy’s cultural significance is huge. He recalls a wow moment seeing Ross Hannaford’s Diana Kiss band perform in the public bar in the early ’90s. “I only saw them once but I’ll never forget it,” he says. “Peter Luscombe [the drummer in the RocKwiz band] tells this great story of when he was supporting Bob Dylan at the Palais, and convinced his band to come across the road to see Diana Kiss. As they walked in, Hannaford and the band was totally on fire. Bucky Baxter [Dylan’s guitarist] turned to him [Peter] and said, ‘Lucky Bob didn’t come or we’d be fired on the spot’.” RocKwiz filmed 174 episodes at the Gershwin Room over 12 years, with the first taking place in November 2004. “People would come from all over Australia because the tapings became the stuff of legend,” says Nankervis. “We would record two shows at night, they were free but it was hard to get tickets.” ABC radio show host Myfanwy Warhurst remembers walking into the Espy when she moved to Melbourne in the early ’90s. “I saw so many

bands there and recall everyone at the pool tables looking like they were having a wild time,” she says. “I spent many Sunday afternoons seeing Dave Taranto’s comedy night in the Gershwin Room. A lot of those comedy icons started there, like Judith Lucy, too. It’s where I got my grounding in Melbourne comedy and learnt how to party well.” From turn-of-the-century hotel to a ballroom venue and jazz hangout, the Espy has morphed into many characters over the years – including ’70s disco, too.

MYFANWY WARHURST

But it was its punk and rock days that nailed its reputation. Radio announcer Jane Gazzo says: “Both of my bands played in the piano bar and Gershwin Room. “There’s no outdoor loading zone behind the venue any more, but they’ve done well to remind us of the Espy of the past. In the front bar, there’s a work of Fred Negro – who is synonymous with the venue – and [they’ve] framed a lot of the old rock posters, too. You feel you’re walking into your own history. There is a definite excitement about it. It’s a

successful renovation and realisation. I am stoked.” The Sand Hill Group’s decision to buy the venue – for a reported $15 million and spending $15 million on the 18-month renovations – has thrilled rock enthusiasts who now get live music with a fancy culinary upgrade. “We all knew the Espy needed a bit of a wash, like all of us old rock ’n’ rollers,” Warhurst says. “Taking care of yourself on the inside is where it’s at now. It’s great it’s back and feels very Melbourne, and will give people a place to go again.” ●

Accessories favourite Mimco looks to the National Gallery of Victoria for inspiration for its latest collection.

I

SENIOR

LIANE HURVITZ

n January, a swarm of media personalities and influencers descended on the National Gallery of Victoria, each one dressed from head to (stilet)toe in a single hue of their choice. They certainly stood out against the mostly black-andwhite backdrop within, where a “house of Escher” had been repeated across the walls and floor of the NGV’s Gallery Kitchen, design studio Nendo’s response to the works of Dutch artist M.C. Escher. Was this a group of art aficionados? Fashion followers? A bit of both, actually. The two worlds married for accessory brand Mimco’s launch of their MIMCO x NGV capsule collection, which took inspiration from the latest NGV exhibition Escher x Nendo/Between Two Worlds. Not that this crowd was between either world: for one night, everyone had, at the fore, an eye on design. This is Mimco’s second capsule collection – they also did one for NGV’s triennial exhibition – and it demonstrates the extent to which design takes precedence in Melbourne and beyond. NGV has capably leapt outside of the world of an art-only crowd – witness the guest list of their recent gala, which included Hollywood actress Natalie Portman – and so it makes sense that Mimco’s extending the way its customers see the brand, too. To make that happen, it was never going to be a case of slapping some heavily derivative Escher images onto earrings and scarves. Says Mimco’s senior designer Sophie Begg: “Even though in reality we are a business that is commercial, we also pride ourselves on being design-led and working through the artistic process. Our focus was to make our own unique pieces that [Japanese design studio] Nendo

DESIGNER S O PH I E B E G G

worked with and Escher worked with, but to no point imitate those designers or that artist. It meant going back to the fundamentals of the work, looking at the manipulation of basic geometric forms, and themes.” The result is an accessories collection that one can’t immediately link to Escher (or Nendo), but the link is clear: tessellate earrings, scarves and rings mimic the idea (rather than the execution) behind Escher’s tessellation drawings, where one graphic image folds into its opposite, creating an illusion that only one appears on the page. “People look at the pieces and find them beautiful in their own right, but others question how they relate [to the

Wo r d s

exhibition]. That’s the point. It gets people to look into it further.” And the collection also manages to echo another important design movement: the one that insists on individuality over insta-viduality. “Mimco has always worked this way – looking to artists, architects, design and art movements, but ensuring we create our own unique product. Collaborations show their transparency to our customer. Fashion brands worldwide have been forced to really work with their own original ideas. If ideas are not your own, everything’s on the internet – you’ll be found out. It places more importance on working from a place of true originality.” ●

As javelin star-turnedfootballer Kaitlyn Ashmore spears a new AFLW team, the next generation is on her mind.

hen Kaitlyn Ashmore was selected by the Brisbane Lions as a priority draft pick ahead of the inaugural 2017 AFLW season, she was both excited and a little unnerved. “I didn’t know who was going to be in Brisbane as far as the team went, and I didn’t know anyone in Brisbane,” she recalls. “Actually, I’d never even been to Brisbane. The furthest I’d been away from Ballarat was Melbourne, and I’d only moved there three months before.”

The Ashmores are a close family; when Kaitlyn broke the news, her mother couldn’t comprehend it. “She said, ‘But you can’t! Women don’t go interstate to play footy!’ ” Indeed they do. And sometimes they come home, too. To her North Melbourne Kangaroo-supporting brother Leigh’s delight, Ashmore has suited up for the burgeoning national competition’s 2019 season in blue and white stripes, a key member of one of two new teams (alongside

Having emerged from a baseball-loving clan to become a karate black belt and a javelin-thrower with an Olympic dream, at 27 she feels at home and ready to break new ground. “I’ve never won a team sport,” Ashmore says. “Me and my brother think we’re pretty unlucky – he’s had the same thing with baseball, nearly made it and just fallen short. For her part, Kaitlyn threw the pointy pole far enough to excel at state and national level. Adding elite performance in karate to the mix won her the Victorian Olympic Council’s Pierre de Coubertin award in 2009. “Pa was an old-school guy, just loved footy,” she says. “I’d do athletics but he’d never come and watch, or if he did, he’d just sit in the stands and not say anything. I’d be happy because I threw a PB; he’d be like, ‘Yeah, that was good.’ He was just a football head.” When she took up school footy her grandfather was in the crowd; after she joined North Ballarat, aged 18, he was there every weekend. After a stroke took her beloved pa in 2011, Ashmore joined Melbourne University’s women’s team, made the state side the following year and has been a serious player ever since. While Brisbane was initially daunting, Ashmore now regards her two seasons there as an awakening. She missed home terribly, not least

her dalmatian Billie, she says, but felt herself grow. “I was a very a shy girl. Now I’m in the North Melbourne leadership group, and I don’t think that would have happened if I hadn’t got out of my comfort zone.” She loves football’s small-world, familial feel; Kangaroos captain Emma Kearney, along with teammates Ash Riddell and Kate Gillespie-Jones, are old Melbourne Uni comrades, while Jenna Bruton is another Ballarat girl. And there are other teammates she’s been longing to play alongside. “Jasmine Garner’s going to be a star.” At the Lions, Ashmore played in two grand finals for two heartbreakingly narrow losses. athletics gnaws at her, but Ashmore has found something that individual sport lacks. “I love that team environment,” she enthuses. “I love having the same goal as my best mates – a lot of them are girls I played with in Brisbane, or in other football teams.” In her work as a relief teacher she feels a confidence she didn’t have before football. It excites her to think how strong the AFLW will be when the girls who are starting Auskick now push into the big league. “I just wish I had that when I was younger. Hopefully I’m still going in 10 years’ time.” ●

I said ‘sure’. We slowly got to know one another.” They bonded over Miles Davis and aligned chakras. “I really like where Carlos was coming from in a spiritual perspective. We had so much in common,” says Blackman-Santana, who is a follower of the Baha’i faith. “He never asked me to join his band right away, but then it got to a point he wanted to play with me. “He was like, ‘I don’t care what people say about not dating someone in the band’. “It all started to happen after I wrote a few songs for American trumpeter Wallace Roney, who recorded them for his album,” she recalls. “The fact they heard something in them really got me on a path of writing more for myself.” Blackman Santana, 59, was born into a musical family. Her maternal grandmother and mother were classical players and her dad was into jazz. Her passion for playing drums began as a seven-year-old in the school band. By 14, she was obsessed by Tony Williams‚ a pioneer jazz fusion artist and best known as the trumpeter in Miles Davis’ band. t age 57, Tony Jones has had a career resurgence on the national stage, and he’s already making headlines. Jones started in the Channel 9 newsroom in Melbourne 33 years ago, but it was only this year that he hit the national stage as one of the co-hosts of Channel 9’s Australian Open tennis coverage. He also joined the much talked-about team as sports presenter on the new Today show, alongside a hosting line-up of Deborah Knight and Georgie Gardner. Jones will talk all things sport on Mondays and Fridays and be involved if there is a big story during the week. The headlines ramped up after Jones interviewed women’s champion Naomi Osaka late on Australia Day. Some described it as a train-wreck interview, but Jones hit back at the social media keyboard warriors, calling them “cowards”, on the Neil Mitchell show on 3AW. He says he was ready for the criticism that his new national role on Today entailed, a job that is scrutinised like no other in the Australian media landscape. “It doesn’t worry me,” he says.

“I am amused by the constant chatter about the two females hosting. “I don’t know what to say, whoever is best for the job, should get the job.” There are two people Jones went to when he got the call from Channel 9 executives out of the blue late last year to ask him if we wanted to be part of Today. “We had just checked into our hotel in Penang on holidays; I was sitting at the bar and had just got a beer, and I got a text from the producer asking me to call him, and I thought it was to do a once a week segment,” he says. “I rang him back and said you better give me a day to think it through, because I’ve got to talk to two people, my wife, Annette, and Neil Mitchell.” Jones has long filled in for Mitchell on 3AW, a gig he cherishes. “I didn’t want anything to impact what I do on AW, and I also wanted Neil’s advice,” he says. “His advice was to do it and don’t worry about AW, nothing will jeopardise that.” He also had the endorsement of his long-time Channel 9 news colleague Peter Hitchener. “He is always very supportive.” ●

Every minute matters Even fitting in small amounts of exercise each day can get results.

DOM A IN REV IEW

IT’S NOT ABOUT HOW LONG YOU TRAIN \ I can’t

tell you how many times I’ve heard the line “I just don’t have enough time to exercise”. Trust me, I get it, life is busy. There is still always time. And guess what? You don’t need to take hours out of your day. You don’t even need one hour. Twenty-eight minutes is enough for you to see results, while still leaving you with enough time to do the things you love and spend time with your friends and family – the things that matter the most. Twenty-eight minutes can actually be more beneficial for your health and fitness than extended periods of exercise. Short bursts of HIIT lead our body into excess post-oxygen consumption (EPOC). EPOC is a process that raises your resting metabolic rate for 24 hours or more, meaning you’ll continue

ALLEGRA SUGIANTO

W

ith almost two decades of experience in the fitness industry, I feel like I’ve heard it all when it comes to the “best ways” to train. Whether it’s spending 60 minutes in a spin room, two hours lifting weights or smashing out 10 minutes of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to see results, there are plenty of confusing and conflicting “facts” out there from so-called experts who insist that they have all the answers. In reality, all they’re doing is making it seriously confusing to work out what to do and who to trust. So with this in mind, I thought I’d debunk the myths surrounding how much and how often you really need to exercise to see results, and what to keep in mind when figuring out what will work for you.

to burn fat even when you’ve finished your workout, and you’re sitting on the couch. This is why I recommend short bursts of hard work as opposed to a 60-minute jog. CONSISTENCY IS KEY \ With exercise, consistency and frequency beat volume every time. Squeezing in 28 minutes every day will help you feel healthier, give you more energy and in conjunction with a healthy, wholefood diet achieve the results you’re looking for. So if you’re a time-strapped corporate hotshot, a flat-out mum or just seriously time poor, look at every free moment as an opportunity. Got 30 minutes to yourself in the morning or in your lunch break? Perfect, squeeze in a jog around your area. You can juuuust make it to that class at your gym after work if you leave by 5.30 on the dot? Great! Finding ways to fit exercise into your day when you can will make a huge difference and become a habit that is an effortless part of your routine. I recommend aiming for three to four workouts a

“If it’s only 14 minutes of exercise, that’s still 14 minutes you might have spent sitting on the couch.” week. The important thing is that you remember that something is always better than nothing, so if it’s only 14 minutes , that’s still 14 minutes you might have spent sitting on the couch.

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE \ When you think

to actually do your workout can be completely different. A huge component of my training philosophy is about ensuring that there is variety. If you let your workouts become repetitive and boring, that’s when you’ll start to become uninterested, lose motivation and perhaps fall off the exercise bandwagon. You should try to find different workouts that you love, mix them up now and then and keep your body guessing. I love seeing that look of surprise and delight when I tell my 28ers that yes, 28 is truly the magic number. It really does give you bang for your buck. Remember, it’s often the little things that lead to the biggest results. ●

about it, 28 minutes a day sounds totally achievable. In reality, what happens when the time rolls around

● 28bysamwood.com

INCREASE THE INTENSITY \ Simple doesn’t

necessarily mean easy. A short workout is most effective when you’re pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. This is why you should try to up the intensity and get sweaty. A high-intensity workout that will ensure you see results should have you working at 80 or 90 per cent of your total capacity.

The pub that gave Tyrone Street its name may be long gone, but the avenue’s pleasure credentials are better than ever. Hartwell station, the Anniversary Trail and Leo’s Supermarket are within a few minutes’ walk. Even closer is the Fordham Gardens playground, just 10 seconds away. The single-level house is ready for a sociable family that loves to gather the clan. With formal and casual living and dining areas, plus two outdoor entertainment areas in the north-facing garden, it sets the scene for banquets, barbecues and lavish parties. Built in 2001, it’s a relative newcomer to the 1920s neighbourhood. The interior was redecorated last year and has polished parquetry and charcoal-grey carpet below floor-to-ceiling windows. Smart and spacious, it will appeal to a school-aged family that wants to move in without so much as flicking a paint brush. The neo-classical facade belongs to the double garage, whose full-length windows look out to a garden of pink roses and box hedge. Follow the brick-paved driveway to the porch, which sits diagonally behind the garage. The clever internal zoning is apparent as soon as you walk in. To the left, double doors lead to a study with satin-finish bookshelves and a desk. The carpeted main bedroom suite has built-in and walk-in wardrobes and a cream marble en suite with a corner spa. The garage has internal access. The living and dining areas form one big room, eight metres wide, in the house’s mid-section. Grey carpet flows to french doors and a dine-out terrace on the east side. Hosts with the most will enjoy the open-plan family room,

Freshly renovated, this house is quite the dapper dandy. Oak flooring and bespoke cabinetry bring a well-groomed air to its single-level floor plan, which has a gorgeous living and dining area opening to a terrace, deck and heated pool. The Miele-equipped kitchen is a highlight. The living area has full-length windows and a gas log fireplace with inglenook bookcases. Three zoned bedrooms include the large main at the front; its fully tiled en suite has a shower and freestanding bath. There’s a second front bedroom, but the third, with a walk-in wardrobe and next to the central bathroom, arguably gets the better deal. The property has a laundry, double garage and security. ● ALISON BARCLAY Agent: Abercromby’s, Tim Derham 0438 332 844 Price: $2.2 million-$2.42 million Auction: 10.30am, February 23

Don’t let this Victorian’s storybook-cute facade fool you: inside, it’s big, bold, and right on trend. A renovation by Drew Cole Architects and Jack Merlo Design provided a sprawling floor plan and a second storey, while ebony floors and black accents add a touch of drama to its light, airy rooms.
