If curated Instagram images of luminous Scandi living rooms, crisp white picket fences and industrial sleek kitchens are becoming all too irritatingly serious, try Googling clips of seasons of Changing Rooms from the late 1990s. Nothing will strain a friendship like turning a neighbour’s rumpus room into a medieval-style beer hall, resplendent with artificial leadlighting and a carved mock-wood bar (as seen in one of my favourite old episodes). This edition, we meet the host of the rebooted version of the show Natalie Bassingthwaighte, who – in interiors speak – knows her boho chic from her Hamptons luxe. ●

FIRST PERSON

““I am Agathe Kerr ” … and I’m a patissiere Growing up, I loved eating pastries, but I never made anything. I come from a family where nobody cooks or bakes. As a child though, I ate a chocolate croissant every day for afternoon tea. It was easy, because we lived in Paris and they’re everywhere. As an adult, I became an IT consultant for Accenture. I worked so hard and never had time to do anything like cook. I spent 15 years in that job, but my husband is Australian. I met him when I was working for Accenture in Sydney for three years and I took him back home with me when I finished. In the next 10 years, we had three children and I got a bit sick of Paris. I really missed Australia. My husband is from Melbourne, so we decided we’d move there. That’s when I thought maybe – since we were already moving so far – that I should change career. It was just like that. I decided I had to do something related to French wine, food or pastry. I didn’t really know which at that stage, but I went to an amateur pastry class with my mum and made a strawberry cake. I loved that it was so scientific and the result is so beautiful. When we set our date to come here, I did a pastry school for adults. It was full-on – full-time for three months, every day from seven to six, baking, baking, baking and learning. It was also very physical, but I discovered something about me, which was that I loved doing manual work. Then we moved to Australia. I started by doing a few things at home for the French people living around me and my daughter asked me if I could sell pastries at her school’s Christmas market. I rented a commercial kitchen and made only pastries and the croissants sold out. The feedback was really good, but funny: “Oh, the mini croissants were delicious!” They were not mini, they were the French size. The business has evolved since then, and I now have two retail shops – one at the South Melbourne Market, which has a kitchen onsite, and one in the CBD. We’re pretty lucky because we start at six, compared to other bakeries. We can do that because we bake onsite throughout the day. It’s good for our customers too – they love a warm croissant. ● ● shop.agathe.com.au ● Instagram: @agathepatisserie

COVER STORY

TV presenter Natalie Bassingthwaighte says her new hosting role is the best fit yet.

A

ustralian TV personality and entertainer Natalie Bassingthwaighte was at the snow with her family last year when a call from Network 10 came through, offering the gig as host of a rebooted renovation show Changing Rooms. “I’ve always been fascinated with interior design and architecture and thought, how surreal, this is the perfect job for me,” Bassingthwaighte says. Changing Rooms first came to attention in the mid-’90s with host Susie Wilks, who unveiled single room renovations between families and friends, then capped at $1500. The new show’s budget is now upped to $20,000, and has two teams – often couples or friends, guided by an interior designer and tradie – make over a room and change more than colour schemes.

“My husband Cameron, who has known me for 14 years, looked at me and said: ‘Nat, I have never seen you happier than when you’re designing and moving stuff around the house. This show would be ideal for someone like you’,” she recalls. Bassingthwaighte, who married her bandmate and former Rogue Traders member Cameron McGlinchey in 2011, is obsessed with moving furniture at their 130-year-old Edwardian period home in bayside Melbourne. She describes the moment she purchased a brown leather couch years ago and snubbed her preferred mustard choice because she was talked out of the bright colour at the time. “One should never ignore their gut instinct,” she reflects. “The dismal brown couch didn’t make me happy at all. I went back and bought the mustard instead. “I think many of us tend to stick to neutrals within a home and people tend to go for Scandinavian looks, which is fine, but when you create your home, your personality needs to come through and you can add pops of colour without overkill.”

emotional impact of the renovation; it does wonders for people.” Bassingthwaighte, who has two children Harper, 8, and Hendrix, 5, is also busy running children’s clothing line Chi Khi. This year she will introduce a mother and baby collection, a basics range and a bumper winter assortment of goodies. “As a mum, I was always looking for good quality and stylish pieces for my kids to wear and decided I might as well start my own label and see how it goes,” she says. The bamboo-focused range is big on prints and wears its street-style cool proudly. Bassingthwaighte first made her name with TV audiences as Izzy Hoyland on Neighbours between 2003 and 2006, and in that time also started performing with her band Rogue Traders. She’s since starred in the 13-part mini-series Underbelly: The Golden Mile, the second season of

ilming Changing Rooms was a huge buzz for Bassingthwaighte, who incidentally has since become friends with one of the show’s interior designers, and scheduled a visit to see what further renovations are possible at her family home. “It might sound corny, but there’s something awesome about going along for the ride with these couples and friends in this series,” she says of the new show. “Seeing people’s lives change as well as their rooms makes fun viewing. It’s also about seeing the

The Wrong Girl, appeared as presenter of So You Think You Can Dance, and as a judge on The X Factor Australia and the New Zealand version. The Sydney-born star has lived in Melbourne for 14 years with no plans to leave. In fact, she turned down a contract in Sydney three years ago as it didn’t fit with her family schedule. But, she says, there’s still plenty she would love to do. “I would love to be the voice of a cartoon character,” Bassingthwaighte says. “Having kids and knowing how much they’d love that would be awesome to do. I also know I will get back on the stage at some point to do more acting and film. “It’s a crazy industry with more people out of work as actors, but I am just glad I don’t put all my eggs in the one basket.” When it comes to self-care, Bassingthwaighte follows a routine of daily meditation, a yoga or pilates class and a policy of no TV in the mornings and no iPads when everyone is home of an evening. She says co-parenting with a supportive husband makes her life easier. “I know I am very lucky to have a great husband who is a huge help around the home. He washes, does the dishes, cooks, cleans. He’s better than me,” she laughs. “While filming Changing Rooms I had Cameron take care of the family situation, and now he’s about to go on tour with Jon Stevens, and I’ll be taking over. “It’s about discussing what’s coming up, seeing what’s possible between us and ultimately what is best for our family.” ● CHANGING ROOMS \ Catch the new season on Network 10

eviche is the perfect dish for summer. It’s light and bright and packed full of freshness. The plus side is that it requires no cooking and you therefore will not need to even use the oven or stove. Ceviche is a Latin American dish that originated in Peru over two thousand years ago. It consists of fresh raw fish cured in citrus juices and can include other ingredients such as capsicum, chilli, cucumber, coriander or tomato. The acid in the citrus cooks the fish so be sure not to cure it for too long.

Instagram: @diana.chan.au

The acid is usually only added a few minutes before serving. I’ve used snapper here as I like the texture of it but any other semi-firm white fish would work well too. Stay away from oily fish such as mackerel, sardines, tuna or salmon. The most important thing is to get the freshest ingredients, keep the fish cold at all times and to cut everything similar in size. Also remember to remove the bloodline. Your fishmonger can do this for you and save you the hassle. ●

Serves 6 Ingredients 1 red capsicum 2 tomatoes, cored 1 long red chilli, finely chopped ∏ red onion, finely chopped 1 packet of corn tortilla Oil for frying 2 snapper fillets, pin boned Juice of 1 lemon Salt and pepper to taste 2 jalapenos, sliced into 2mm thickness for garnish

Method ■ Start by making the salsa. Dice the capsicum and tomatoes into small, 5mm pieces and place into a medium-sized mixing bowl. ■ Add the chilli, red onion and leave it covered in the fridge. ■ In the meantime, heat some oil in a small pot. Use a thermometer to ensure the oil sits at approximately 170C. Using a 2-inch (5cm) cookie cutter, cut out circles from the corn tortilla. You may also just cut them up any shape you like. ■ Fry the tostadas until golden and crispy. ■ Just before serving, season sliced fish with lemon juice, and salt and pepper. ■ To present, place all the components onto a large serving platter and DIY assemble at the table. ●

f the rapid approach of the end of the year wasn’t enough to freak you out about time passing, news that Donovans turned 20 might just do it. But what better place is there to ignore life flashing before your eyes than at a timeless restaurant with absolute beachfront views and a terrace perfect for downing pre- or post-dinner cocktails? Just like everything else at Donovans – from the menu to the decor – the cocktails are tweaked to suit the season. Nick Packhouse, who looks after the drinks list at the restaurant with Kevin Donovan, says the approach is “to have something for everybody, using good ingredients that will cater to all tastes”. The list bears that out with several versions of Bloody Mary (including a Scary Mary that pumps

up the chilli heat), a selection of spritz and a cocktail list chockful of classic drinks – Negroni, Gimlet, Margarita, Sour – usually given a bit of a Donovans-style twist. A Donovans classic, and one perfectly suited to balmy weather, is the Chop Chop Charlie. Vodka, the vanilla-based Liquor 43, apple juice, passionfruit and fresh mint are combined in a Boston shaker before being poured into a highball glass filled with ice. It’s a refreshing, luxurious drink that beckons you to a second round. There’s also the Donovans’ version of the Corpse Reviver #2 that uses locally made Maidenii Quinquina (a “tonic wine” infused with cinchona bark), gin, Cointreau, a dash of pastis and lemon juice that's shaken over ice and strained into a

ong before the Spices Girls came along to claim pop victories, the ’80s belonged to Bananarama. Formed in London and inspired by punk rock, the pop trio navigated their way to the top of the charts releasing catchy hits like Robert De Niro’s Waiting and Venus. It took more than 30 years after the original lineup split in 1988 for them to come back together for shows in 2017. And now, in a first, two members Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward return to Australia to remind us what all the fuss was about. “The ’80s were a great time for music,” recalls Dallin, 57, who kept making music with Woodward over the decades – even after Siobhan Fahey left the group in 1988 to form Shakespears Sister. “We started this band I was a teenager in the late ’70s,” she says of her group, which celebrates its

40th anniversary this year. “I was interested in punk, went to the London Fashion College with Keren and were encouraged to start this band by our good friend Paul Cook – the drummer for the Sex Pistols. “We had no money, would shop at vintage markets and loved putting outfits together. It was a very organic and experimental process – we didn’t have a bigger picture in our heads.” In the early ’80s, the two friends rented a room above a rehearsal space on Denmark Street where the Sex Pistols would jam late at night. “The room had all of John Lydon’s [Johnny Rotten’s] drawings of Nancy and Sid on the walls and all the old bondage trousers hanging there,” says Dallin. “We stayed there for 10 months. It was pretty basic. We’d do backing vocals for Paul Cook and Steve Jones’ band The Professionals until they said, ‘You two need to start your own group’.” Their debut Deep Sea Skiving was released in 1983 – featuring the track Shy Boy, but it was their fourth album Wow! produced by Stock Aitken and Waterman in 1987 that gave them their first No. 1

album in Australia and put hits like I Heard a Rumour and I Want You Back on the radio. It was the era of MTV, meeting Andy Warhol on a boat in New York, opening for Iggy Pop at the Rainbow in London and hanging out with another ’80s band, Wham. “It was surreal seeing Andy Warhol on the MTV boat on the anniversary of July 4 in 1986 suddenly taking Polaroids of us,” says Dallin. “Andy being very quiet. He would silently watch things and became a little obsessed with us.”

As far as Iggy Pop goes, Dallin says the grandfather of punk – who they never got to meet even though they opened up for him all those years ago – is also curiously obsessed, known to play the band’s hit Cruel Summer on his BBC Radio 6 show. It took the passing of their life-long friend George Michael in December 2016 for the original line-up of Bananarama to come together again. “We had the idea to re-form before George passed, but I think that’s what really got Siobhan thinking about not knowing when your time is up in this world. So, she agreed to do it,” says Dallin. “George was a lovely guy. I miss him every day. He lived five minutes up the road. I drive past his old home and feel sad about it. “We would have discos and dinners there all the time ... we would holiday at his home in the South of France. A generous and kind spirit. He was hilarious and greatly missed.” ● BANANARAMA \ Play The Forum in Melbourne on

ollywood actor Rami Malek took out the best actor award at the Golden Globes for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. Now, in his first Oscar nod, the 37-year-old is up against Bradley Cooper, Willem Dafoe, Viggo Mortensen and Christian Bale for the best actor award at the 70th Academy Awards. Malek first discovered Queen via cassette tape, but it was Mike Myers’ Wayne’s World in 1992, which used

Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody in the opening scenes, that reminded the world what really happened in 1975. That song roared back up the charts to reach No. 2 in the US. “I grew up in the ’80s so Queen songs were pretty much on high rotation,” Malek says. The ambitious actor knew playing the part of Queen’s frontman would be controversial, but was willing to give it a crack. “I am just happy this film didn’t go sour,” he says.

Malek flew to London to learn to dance with a choreographer, play the piano and undertake singing lessons. His character was months in the making. During these stages he heard many stories about Mercury. “My favourite urban legend is that Mercury dressed Princess Diana in a motorcycle leather jacket to make her look like a man and took her to a gay bar one night,” says Malek. “Wouldn’t that have been something.” He also urges fans to look out for a scene which didn’t make the movie. “It’s when Freddie is writing A Crazy Little Thing Called Love in the bath and calls his assistant to bring him a guitar. He composed the song there and then in the tub,” says Malek. “We filmed it and I hope it’ll come out on an extended cut.” ●

“This is something that could have gone either way, but people have responded really well. This is only a small portion of Queen’s story, but I was thrilled we could bring it to a new generation.” Costumes are loud and reproduced to perfection. Mercury’s visionary dress style adds to the film’s sartorial splendour. From sequins and topless looks, leather pants, Adidas trainers and Wrangler jeans, Mercury’s key moments are captured well. He wore an iconic white butterfly sleeve blouse that British designer Zandra Rhodes made for him in the ’70s – apparently a wedding dress he saw at her store which she cut into a top. The exact silhouette is replicated in a lighter fabric. Olympia Valance ACTRESS

The ultimate in retirement living. No two apartments are the same at The Benson. They are as individual as the people who live in them.

lympia Valance has been offered a role on every reality show imaginable, but there is only one she has said yes to – Dancing with the Stars. “If I was ever going to do a reality show, it would be a dancing show,” she says. “I’ve always wanted to learn to dance and it’s something I’ve always loved watching.” She and partner Jarryd Byrne are training up to seven hour a day, and she is already seeing results. “They don’t tell you how strenuous it is,” she says. “I’ve got such a growing respect for these dancers because it’s really, really tough.” Valance, 26, is one of the major stars of the Network 10 reboot of the reality show, alongside Denise Scott, Courtney Act, and controversially, Karl Stefanovic’s ex-wife, Cassandra Thorburn. Grant Denyer and Amanda Keller are the hosts. Ten has high hopes the show will connect with viewers once again. At the show’s peak on Channel 7, with Daryl Somers as host, it averaged 2 million viewers a week. Valance’s star is on the rise; she is also set to film

the second series of Playing for Keeps in the first half of this year. She plays super-confident WAG Tahlia Woods in the Ten series, which follows the trials and tribulations of a group players’ partners in footballobsessed Melbourne. Tahlia’s one-liners and the fact the show is about WAGS made it a cult hit in Melbourne last year. Valance said she wasn’t surprised by the show’s success. “When I read the script I thought that if they do this properly and make it look good, it was always going to be a success,” she says. “People can really relate to it.” With a home in Los Angeles and Melbourne, Valance intends to divide herself between the two in the coming years. Personally, things are also looking good for Valance; she is in a relationship with Los Angelesbased Australian actor Luke Bracey. After both Dancing with the Stars and Playing for Keeps finish filming this year, Valance is heading to Greece for an extended family holiday. ●

LEARNING CURVES

T

he first year of primary school can be both an exciting and anxious time for young students and their parents. But how can you know your child is ready for school next year? According to the experts, it’s not just about his or her academic skills. Associate professor Kay Margetts with the University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education says ensuring your child is ready for school is linked to their social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. “Children’s adjustment to school is supported when they are adaptable and cooperative and have some basic understanding of letters of the alphabet and numbers,” Margetts says. She says children who are sociable and join groups, initiate conversations, include others, have self-control and can resist temptations, share and take turns, are confident to try new things and cope

with new situations are able to deal with challenges, disappointments and conflict and better able to cope with the demands of school life. Claire Vellios, director and educator at Malin Friends Nursery and Kindergartens in Melbourne agrees. She says the focus for kindergarten teachers is on the development of skills in children’s physical, social, emotional, communication and cognitive areas to prepare them for school. “Prep and school is a much bigger physical environment [than kindergarten], there are many more people and people that are unknown initially to children,” Vellios says. “Children need to be able to manage themselves within this space and have definitely the ability to solve problems or difficulties they may encounter, skills such as finding a teacher to ask for help.” While developing social and emotional skills is important, getting to know their new surroundings

Prep timed to perfection can be an important part of young students adjusting to school. “I think it is important for children to make as many visits to the school as possible before commencing, parents can help their children by making extra visits such as walking past the school on the weekend, looking at the grounds and talking about the transition in a positive and exciting way,” Vellios says. “Most children will be very happy and excited to be starting prep. Parents and teachers can be available to talk about any concerns, feelings or difficulties the children may have and talk through these.” ● MELISSA HEAGNEY

EDUCATION & INNOVATION

Lessons Learnt

Z AHAVA ELENB ERG

JOHN DONEGAN

Z

ahava Elenberg spent most of her primary and secondary school years at Preshil, an independent progressive school in Kew. She says it was a perfect learning environment as it encouraged independence, an inquiring mind, creativity and helped Elenberg realise that she could be whomever she wanted to be. After graduating from Preshil, Elenberg forged a creative career, first in architecture as a co-founder of architecture firm Elenberg Fraser and now running the successful furniture business Move-in. She also sits on the board of the Melbourne Film Festival. “I remember Preshil giving me a clear message that I was important, that my ideas mattered, and that education could work around a child’s needs,” she says. “In primary school, I have this salient memory of freedom, happiness, making cubbies, climbing trees and simply enjoying school. As a teenager I went to a couple of other schools for a while and I turned into a bit of a ratbag! I went through a rebellious phase and mum sent me back to Preshil.” Preshil offers the International Baccalaureate programs and is Australia’s oldest progressive school. It began in 1931 when Margaret J R Lyttle began teaching five pupils in the living room of her home in Kew. She firmly believed in engaging with each child as an individual and building personal responsibility, self-esteem, resilience, initiative, creativity and courage. This approach remains at the heart of Preshil. “I was a good student, but I had green hair, wore a lot of make-up and had quite an attitude. One particular teacher got so sick of me one day that he marched me into the headmistress’ sitting room,” says Elenberg. “The headmistress lived on campus and her sitting room was the centre of the school. As the teacher told her about the terrible things I was doing and about my green hair and make-up, she raised her spectacles, looked at me and said, ‘I don’t see any green hair or make-up. I don’t know what the fuss is about.’ “She then told me I was in charge of the school play. She turned me into another person.

Z A H AVA E L E N B E R G & H E PH Z I BA H

“Preshil sees the child behind the behaviour and recognises that if you give a child an opportunity to shine, they will.” Preshil left such a positive impression on Elenberg that her three children have also attended the school. Lilith graduated in 2018 and is enjoying a gap year before considering a career in medicine. Elenberg’s younger son, Boaz, and daughter, Hephzibah, remain at the school. “I don’t believe in conservative, traditional models of education. I don’t think it is conducive to learning or conducive to the way kids think,” she says. “Preshil allows children to be kids for as long as they need to be without the constraints of a predetermined idea of what kids do at a certain age. You walk into that campus and it feels like a

Utopian heaven where kids are happy. What better place to learn?” Elenberg says Preshil taught her lasting life lessons that are as valuable today as when she was at school – such as taking risks and being confident in her decisions and who she is. “I’m always curious and interested in trying new things and I think that’s because Preshil teaches you how to learn and be engaged and interested and proud of who you are,” she says. “I don’t like rules and being told what to do, and Preshil taught me not to be a conformist and to be who I need to be with no apology. I left school believing I could achieve whatever I wanted to achieve as long as I had the will to do it.” ● SARAH MARINOS

HAWTHORN \ 27 MANNINGTREE ROAD 4

Manningtree Road has always been family friendly. The street was laid out in 1873, and once Hawthorn State School (now Glenferrie Primary) moved there in 1877 the mums, dads and kids began to pile in. A villa like this was just what the families wanted – and still want. Built of spectacular bichrome brick in 1890, the single-level house was renovated within its original walls about 20 years ago and now has a modern living and dining area opening to a deck above a north-facing garden. There’s even a three-room basement, ideal as a workshop, wine cellar and bicycle store – or just a hideout for (or from) free-ranging children. It’s one of the best addresses in Manningtree Road, a heritage avenue prized for being close to schools, transport and Glenferrie Road’s shops and Lido Cinemas. Beyond the black door, the Baltic pine central hall opens to four carpeted bedrooms with rope-spiral pendant lights. The largest, in the front bay, has a marble and tile fireplace and could be used as a formal living room. Bedroom two has a marble fireplace and wardrobes, and the third has a walkin wardrobe and a white en suite with a shower. The fourth, single bedroom is set up as a study and has wardrobes and a bookcase. The main bathroom looks smart in white and grey with a granite cabinet, Dura enamel bath and a glass shower. Families will enjoy basking in the big open-plan area, linked by sliding doors to the elevated pergola deck for solar benefits. Victorian ash floorboards gleam below sash

cookbook shelves and a Qasair rangehood hidden in a hatch ensure a supreme degree of order. There’s also a laundry via a cavity slider. The garden is a leafy sanctuary, its dine-out patio shaded by standard robinias and mature elms. The basement, has a workbench and wine-bottle racks. The rear double carport has a roller door to the side driveway. ● ALISON BARCLAY property@domainreview.com.au Agent: Marshall White, James Tostevin 0417 003 333 Price: $2.2 million-$2.4 million Auction: 10.30am, February 23

The anatomy of this chic grey abode is all clean lines harmoniously married with heritage elements. Its shadesof-grey scheme continues beyond the dollhouse-like facade, with interior tones ranging from gunmetal to dove, complemented by white plantation shutters and Baltic pine floors.
