Australian fashion designer Martin Grant doesn’t need a long introduction, but some blokes among the audience may need a prompt. If you see a woman sashaying down the street in a coat engineered to her form, the whorl of fabric with each stride indicating heft and substance, it’s likely a Grant confection. It is no wonder newly minted British royal Meghan Markle is a fan, and her popularity endears him to a wider audience. Grant’s approach is so perfectly suited to a woman in the public glare but who doesn’t want her clothes to snatch that spotlight – and now, he’s making menswear. ●

““I am Dan Bolwell ” … and I make penny-farthings What really captivated me about penny-farthings was reading the encyclopaedia as a child and seeing the history of the bicycle. It was a human-powered vehicle. This is before cars, before motorbikes – at a time where you either walked, or got around on a horse and cart, or a train for longer distances. All of a sudden you had a human-powered vehicle that could do 50km/h. Penny-farthings were revolutionary. In my mid-20s, I was working on the family farm in western Victoria. There was a fairly tough drought year. It was only a small farm and I worked part-time in an engineering shop, and because of the drought, I found I had a little bit more time, so I started building penny-farthings. I just worked it out from some old photos.

When I see someone with a top hat, I want to poke a stick in their spokes, because it’s inappropriate clothing – it’s the wrong era. People on penny-farthings wore riding gear – thin, woollen cycling outfits. They were riding fast, they were out to do touring, racing. It was the hoon’s machine of 1880. I started doing this full-time about six years ago. I’m making 30 bikes a year and I’ve sold bikes in 12 countries. There’s no one else doing it professionally in Australia, but there are back-yarders who’ll have a go. It takes me about 100 to 120 hours to make one bike. They start from about $3000, but the average is around $5000. My customers are mostly men, between 30 and 70. The common thing between them all, regardless

of gender, age, background or anything, is they are very interesting, amazing characters. There’s an idea that you hop on a penny-farthing and it’s going to throw you off. But they’re just like riding a normal bicycle, except you sit higher. I’ve ridden through northern Thailand, Malaysia and London. We do a tour each year, which is about 1000 to 1500 kilometres. There’s a misconception that because you’re riding a penny-farthing you must love attention. But the last thing I want to do is ride where there are people that are going to yell out to me. When you ride it everyone’s like, “Look at that, yeah mate, chuck a mono.” Then it’s, “Where’s your top hat?” And I say, “It’ll be somewhere you don’t want it to be in about two minutes.” ●

t's been more than 25 years since the Melbourneborn and internationally renowned fashion designer Martin Grant moved to London before choosing Paris as his final destination. “I speak French 90 per cent of the time, but when I am in France I still feel like an Australian,” Grant says. “It's only when I am in Australia that I feel Parisian and now, after all these years, I have decided that feeling may never change.” Next month’s Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival’s Runway 1, presented by Vogue, will include his latest womenswear collection. Grant, who travels to Australia a couple of times a year to see his family and manage an ongoing collaboration with Qantas (he designs flight attendant and pilot uniforms), won't be in town for VAMFF, as it is during peak selling season in Paris. “I would love to be there, but I trust the team at Vogue to do a great job,” he says. Grant’s label is exclusively stocked at Christine boutique in Melbourne. It's where you'll find his signature womenswear collection and now also a curated mix of his debut men's collection – coats, outerwear and T-shirts. “I was prompted to start a menswear line because I was cold and needed a coat,” he says frankly. “I also got the point where many male friends kept asking me to make coats. Many of the ones I make for women can translate into men’s, so I put my mind to it and it was a refreshing thing to do. After years of dressing women I was happy to look at what a man needed.” Grant has kept his men's collection minimal – there are three coats with additional pieces to complement the range. “For me, the conversation right now is all about crossing the border towards gender-neutral clothing,” he says. “It's also always been easier for women to wear a man's jacket but not the other way around.” Grant made headlines last year when Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle wore a beige trench of his on her trip to Australia, among other pieces from his collection. “There was definitely an immediate reaction worldwide,” he recalls of the social media hysteria. “Customers from America, England and Australia wanted to place an order for the exact same one. The good thing for us was that Meghan, who chooses all her own looks, went for something new from my collection which hadn’t come in store yet, so we had a good idea to make a whole lot more than planned.” International department stores like Barneys and Moda Operandi increased orders after Markle also wore a long, pleated striped dress by the designer.

A champion of Parisian couture, Grant is known for his chic cocktail gowns, belted trench-coat dresses and salon-ready looks for a sophisticated woman about town, and worn by celebrities such as Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton and Juliette Binoche. European flair is the essence of his inspiration. “I have always stayed true to my style,” Grant says. “It's important to keep a constant look as part of your aesthetic as a brand and I enjoy trying to find this season's version of that coat that women love. It's more about an evolution than a rewrite.” His longevity and survival as a reputed designer in Paris has been due to years of hard work and commitment to quality. But he has also noticed that customers wanted more for their dollar. The collection shown during the VAMFF runway will highlight the fine line between feminine and masculine silhouettes. “I wanted a gender contrast this season and varnished the classic trench to look tougher, and

“For me, the conversation right now is all about crossing the border towards gender-neutral clothing.” dresses have a ’50s style, but come with an off-theshoulder look for a sharp diversion,” Grant says. Grant's decision to be stocked at Christine is no accident – he's a hit with her cult audience. He recalls meeting the owner Christine Barro through mutual friends and crossing paths through Melbourne's nightclub scene in the ’80s. Barro, who worked as an accessories buyer at the Georges department store on Collins Street, became an iconic figure in the fashion world and known for importing the hip pieces of the time. Barro continues to do so through her own shop, which has now moved to the Paris end of Collins Street after many years in Flinders Lane. “I was a young design student in Melbourne in the ’80s and Georges was our mecca,” Grant says. “It's where people like Christine was bringing in the coolest designs that us art and fashion students adored.” Grant prioritised sustainable design long before it became a fashion buzz-phrase and this approach, even as his collections grow, remains business as usual. “I have always been committed to slow fashion and quality,” he says. ● Impeccable pieces by Martin Grant, spring/summer 2019.

Red carpet relations What better way than a party to showcase Australia to LA’s most influential? Wo r d s

T

he G’Day USA gala, a glitzy annual gathering that introduced Keith Urban to Nicole Kidman many moons ago, has celebrated its sweet 16th birthday. The event in Los Angeles, last month, seems to be an excuse to unite business leaders, politicians and entertainers for a soiree. But its purpose is a fascinating peek into politics of a different kind. Come behind the scenes of one of Hollywood’s most exclusive events...

The people This year the guest list featured, among others, actors Jamie Lee Curtis, Vince Vaughn, Isla Fisher, Paul Hogan, Phillip Noyce, Miranda Tapsell and John Travolta.

Minister for Trade Simon Birmingham worked the red carpet at the 3Labs event space in California’s Culver City, while Australia’s ambassador to the US, former treasurer Joe Hockey, was thrilled with the seating arrangements. “Apparently, I’m sitting next to Vince Vaughn,” he says. “You know, two good-looking guys with a sense of humour.” Travolta, an “honorary Aussie” and Qantas ambassador who first visited Australia about 40 years ago, is a regular gala attendee. “This is one of the most fun nights in Hollywood because it celebrates the incredible rapport between Australia and the United States,” he says.

The room Founding partner Qantas has collaborated over the years with the Department of Foreign Affairs, Austrade and Tourism Australia on the highly-anticipated black tie event. Each entity is responsible for bringing together an eclectic mix of movers and shakers for the stylish knees-up. “We’re here to help Australia punch above its weight and really show its world-class standing across a broad spectrum of achievements,” chief executive officer of Qantas International Alison Webster says. “We’re not only generating trade interest and investment discussions, we’re also Continued p11

generating leisure interest. Part of our pride as Australia’s national carrier is putting Australia on the map – for Americans to say, ‘this is the place I want to spend my holidays. I want to get to know that country.’ ” The event packs an entertainment punch, with Air Supply, Human Nature, Jessica Mauboy and Guy Sebastian performing in previous years. However, the bulk of the night is spent distributing awards to those who’ve excelled in their field. Previous G’day USA honourees include Ben Mendelsohn, Toni Collette, Hugh Jackman, Simon Baker, Greg Norman, Guy Pearce, Rose Byrne, Kylie Minogue, Rod Laver, Margot Robbie and Barry Gibb. This year, the room was charged with emotion when singer and activist Helen Reddy received her Lifetime Achievement Award. Tears were shed during the standing ovation, as 77-year-old Reddy, battling ill health, blew kisses from the stage.

The vibe A-listers who flock to the G’day USA gala tend to catch up with old mates or seek new connections. Actor Sacha Baron Cohen – married to Australian Isla Fisher and better known as Borat – meandered among the tables. Meanwhile, Vaughn was positively charming, chit-chatting with anyone with the gumption to say hello. Newly-weds Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus happily posed with the occasional selfie-seeker; Cyrus even heckled her Melbourne-born hubby as he accepted his award for excellence in film. Ex-pat actor Dan MacPherson reflected on the “super-relaxed” gala after discussing film ideas with a Screen Australia executive and talking imports with representatives from the Australian meat industry.

Chef Curtis Stone designed a three-course meal for nearly 700 attendees, intended to showcase fresh produce and Australian culinary prowess. Over the years, the menu has often included a lamb dish (this

year it was Thomas Farms lamb loin) while oysters, pavlova and local fish have featured. Witty MC Patrick Brammall sought a “barrel girl” for the lucky draw (the prize was free-flowing Penfold’s Grange for the winning table) and gave the job to Fisher, who joked her way through the raffle.

Mateship The night is always quintessentially Australian; a grand party to facilitate a night of back-slapping, building friendships, and perhaps even striking a deal or two. Hemsworth shared his view on the night: “I love seeing all the Australians. It’s always kind of scary being in a room full of Australians, especially when there’s free alcohol. But it’s good to be here.” Although he has a firm relationship with Australia, Travolta’s cultural fascination endures. “Australians have this stellar ability to think outside the box,” he says. “The human spirit Australians have is like no other – the warmth, the excitement and working hard, but having fun, too. There’s an art to that. And I don’t know if we nail it as well as you guys do.” ●

Roll up for the mystery tour Be they poetic or confronting, the homes on Stephen Crafti’s tours are always a surprise.

C

all it Melbourne’s version of a magical mystery tour: every few months, architecture and design writer Stephen Crafti gathers a group of around 50 people, and shepherds them onto a bus. They don’t exactly know where they’re going, but the day-long tour will take them inside four private homes in Melbourne that are seen as significant for their design. Will they love what they see? That’s not the point, says Crafti, who’s penned more than 40 books on his chosen field of study. “Some houses are poetic, others are interesting. I’m about to show a house

that’s so wild that I think it will divide people, but it’s an important house. I like the surprise, and I like to see the look on people’s faces. If my tours don’t change the way you look at things, then there’s something wrong with you. I want people to enter a space and say, ‘I can’t believe I’m here.’ ” But he won’t give up details in advance. “I absolutely refuse to tell people where we’re going. If you can’t trust me, don’t come.” That’s not to say that the tours themselves don’t allow for wavering opinions, he says: “They’re beautiful homes with a different story, and different people attend. I get people from the ’burbs who are so excited, and then the black-clothes brigade who are very design savvy. While I don’t want people to say, ‘Oh, I hate this,’ it does sometimes take visitors a while to process what they’ve seen.” One past tour included his current home, an ivycovered 1930s house that he re-imagined with the

help of architect Robert Simeoni. Crafti took inspiration from both the Villa Necchi Campiglio in Milan and the Maison de Verre (the “house of glass”) in Paris; echoes of the latter are depicted in the black-framed garden windows which zig-zag in concertina fashion along the dining area. Crafti also favoured the bathrooms at the Hotel Julien in Antwerp – a place he frequents when he takes his overseas groups there with cultural tour company Australians Studying Abroad (ASA) – and so his downstairs powder room is tiled in black from floor to ceiling, with a little peephole window to some greenery outside. “We didn’t want to recreate Belgium, but I wanted a sense of it.” At every home, the architect comes to give participants his or her perspective of the work. Often, the house’s owner is there, too. One memorable pit-stop was Camberwell House designed by Andres Casillas de Alba.

“It is very severe on the outside – concrete with a moat at the front – and has such unusual spaces on the inside,” Crafti says. “The owner’s partner is Mexican, so there’s also a lovely Mexican overlay of beautiful objects and art. I just feel so privileged when I’m there.” What can you expect on the tour? An education in design, properties with a distinct point of view and, above all, some fun. “I like humour in design,” says Crafti, whose design tours travel to destinations including Germany and Finland. “Everything has become so earnest, serious and polite that it makes me nauseous. I like things that are kind of fun, and have a story behind them.” ● ASA CULTURAL TOURS AND HOUSE TOURS \ ● asatours.com.au ● stephencrafti@bigpond.com

Don Hany ACTOR

elbourne-based actor Don Hany felt like he was the prime minister filming the Foxtel drama Secret City: Under The Eagle, and for good reason. The series was filmed at Parliament House in Canberra this time last year, when the real politicians were in recess. Hany plays fictional prime minister Ewan Garrity, a character he says is similar to former Prime Minister Julia Gillard. “It was heavy,” Hany says. “I recognised just how high the stakes are for the people who really do walk those corridors in positions of power.” Secret City: Under The Eagle explores the political power structure in Australia and, while fictional, there are comparisons to events that made headlines in Canberra. The show explores the power grabs, leadership spills, and dog-eat-dog political culture that has marred modern politics. The comparisons between the script and what was happening in real life made Hany think.

“The politicians get to power, and they feel like they don’t owe anyone anything,” he says. “It feels like it’s going to be a long time before we will get someone like a Jacinda Ardern, the New Zealand PM, in power, because there is too much aggro in this country.” The stellar cast includes Jacki Weaver, who plays Labor powerbroker Catriona Bailey, and Anna Torv as political journalist Harriet Dunkley. Hany also has a starring role in the Channel 9 drama Bad Mothers, playing Kyle Evans, the widowed husband of Charlotte, who was played by Melissa George. The drama also stars Tess Haubrich, Mandy McElhinney, Jessica Tovey and Shalom BruneFranklin as the “bad mothers”. “It was a great show to be involved in,” he says. “It was a female-driven cast and storyline, which is happening more and more now, which is a great thing.” ● SECRET CITY: UNDER THE EAGLE \ Premieres Monday March 4, 8.30pm on Foxtel’s Foxshowcase.

am often asked about snacks and whether or not they can be part of a healthy diet. The answer to that? Absolutely. If a healthy snack is going to stop you from overeating at meal time or giving in to temptation then by all means go for it. The key is that you snack only when you need to and that you also make the best choice. I totally get that it can be hard to know what to eat, especially when there are so many products marketed as “healthy”. Make sure you do your research and always read the label when choosing

“Packed with nutrition and low in calories, boiled eggs get the big tick of approval from me when it comes to smart snacking.” snacks like muesli bars, yoghurts and protein bars as these can often be desserts in disguise due to their high sugar content. To give you a helping hand here are seven snacks to cure the hunger without undoing your hard work: A HANDFUL OF ALMONDS (AROUND 10) \ The protein and fat content of almonds make them a very satisfying low-calorie snack. It can be easy to overdo it, though, so make sure you watch your portions and aim for a small handful. HOMEMADE PROTEIN BALLS \ Protein balls are a

popular snack choice and when you make them at home, not only do you save money, you know exactly

This place would be a landmark if only it weren’t so well concealed. One of the earliest houses on the Edgevale estate, it’s an impressive concoction of bay windows and leadlight, wrapped in a colonnaded verandah and nestled on a 0.1 hectare corner block. Not that anyone gets to gawk. Passers-by see the top of a slate roof, and that’s it. Hidden by a high wall, the property has all the benefits of a central location – trams, private schools, shopping – while being snugly secluded. The house was built in 1890 and has six original rooms, including living and dining, a study and a master suite. Careful extension in the 1970s added a kitchen, family and meals area opening to an elevated terrace. To the rear is a loft-style retreat. There’s also an attic (or fourth bedroom), cellar, powder room and laundry. Airy and grand, yet with the friendly atmosphere of a home well loved, it will appeal to a family with active kids who seek space and a big backyard. Two pedestrian gates – posh on Cotham Road, casual on Edgevale – will lead you down the stepping-stone path to the side entry. Living and dining rooms face each other across the beautiful leadlight hall. The bay-window living room has an Edwardian mirrored fireplace, while the box-bay dining room has an arched sunroom with a fireplace and a leadlight casement hand-painted with robins. Three double bedrooms include the spacious main, with a built-in wardrobe and a cream-tiled semi-en suite. Two further bedrooms have wardrobes, and the central

There’s a door to the leadlight study and another to the slate terrace. Fans of Skippy will adore the first-floor retreat, whose pine panelling and wraparound windows evoke the rangers’ headquarters. Downstairs – on the groovy caramel floor tiles – are the laundry and powder room. ● ALISON BARCLAY property@domainreview.com.au Agent: Anton Zhouk, Anton Zhouk 0430 224 438 Price: $2.6 million-$2.8 million Expressions of interest: close 5pm, March 4

This fresh property deserves a family who love to live outdoors. The new, two-storey house is breathtakingly sleek, with blackbutt flooring and white stone throughout. The enormous garden – north-facing with a pool, spa, deck and lavish barbecue kitchen – will seduce the sociable types. A double-height atrium gives the dining room and Boschequipped kitchen a heavenly brilliance. The family room (with fireplace) has an adjoining study, and there’s also a media room. The home includes a petite ground-floor suite and three bedrooms upstairs, the main with an en suite, twin walk-in wardrobes and a balcony. The triple garage has a mud room and workshop. ● ALISON BARCLAY Agent: Marshall White, Madeline Kennedy 0411 873 913 Price: $3.7 million-$3.9 million Auction: 10.30am, March 2

Climbing vines and landscaped gardens frame this home’s facade, adding a fairytale feel to its Edwardian good looks. A single-storey residence, it has four double bedrooms – one also works as a living room – with an en suite for the main and a central bathroom for everyone else. In the rear, its entertainer attributes come to the fore. A huge living and dining zone opens right up to the backyard courtesy of wall-to-wall bifold doors. The granite kitchen has Miele appliances and plenty of bench space. Outside, there’s a paved entertaining area, a solar-heated pool and a shed for storage. Top schools, trams, trains, shopping, parklands and sporting grounds are a stroll away. ● ERIN MUNRO Agent: Jellis Craig, Chris Daly 0432 056 911 Price: $2.7 million-$2.9 million Auction: 10am, March 2

A renovation and extension rejigged the layout of this Edwardian home to let in more sun and turn what was a pretty home into a striking one. Floor-to-ceiling, steelframed windows and glass doors line the left wall of the main family zone. Natural light floods the property’s northern side, providing a scenic connection to the garden, complete with sleekly-designed pool and a deck for entertaining.
