It’s rare for a journalist to demonstrate business acumen – we are not known for being adept at any venture that requires a balance sheet – but Melbourne Storm chief executive officer Dave Donaghy is an exception, in more ways than just this. A born leader, the 36-year-old former journo was the youngest CEO in the NRL when he took the Storm helm at 32, and has helped to produce results that stand alongside any sensational Billy Slater try. He is a positive force to be reckoned with, driving success even in an AFL-mad town. Reporter Luke Dennehy met Donaghy for this week’s feature. ●

““I am Sally Mitchell ” … and I’m a dairy farmer I’ve always lived in a rural area. I was a townie
growing up, but a lot of my friends lived on farms and I found it exciting to spend the weekend with them. I married my first boyfriend when I was 19. He was a farmer and worked on his family farm – a beef and sheep property. After several years the family partnership split up, but my husband still wanted to be a farmer. We lived in a dairy area and we decided that the only farm we could afford would be a dairy farm, even though we knew basically nothing about the industry. We managed to save up a deposit, bought the farm and the week before we took over we thought we better go down to our friend’s place and learn how to milk a cow. That was in 1989. On December 27, 1991, my husband went into a coma and he died on June 3, 1992. On June 23, I had our first child. It was traumatic, but I was determined to keep the farm. I had a lot of support from my family and his brothers, and I was able to tread water for 12 months while I worked out what to do. I knew he’d want his child to grow up in a rural environment. Time went on and I remarried. I’ve had two more children and I’m still a dairy farmer. Over the years, I’ve needed to learn everything. I’ve done courses in nutrition, calving, artificial insemination, farm management, and last year I completed a rural leadership course. I think that you should always have an open mind to learning. The farm we have now is 124 hectares, and it’s in a very beautiful spot, which is important to me. When you wake up in the morning, you feel good just because it’s so pretty. We used to supply milk to a large, multinational company, but we came to the conclusion that wasn’t what we wanted to do. We now supply milk to Procal, which is a small, family-owned company on the outskirts of Melbourne. I’ve got my favourite cow. I actually took a photo of her this morning and sent it to a Facebook group that I’m in. Nothing will make her go fast. She’s got a good attitude – she’ll always get there in the long run, but it’s on her own terms. ●

COVER STORY
A
t age 32, Dave Donaghy was named chief executive officer of Melbourne Storm – the youngest CEO, by a long shot, in the National Rugby League and the club’s history. Born in the central Queensland town of Gladstone – NRL heartland – it’s been a speedy rise to the top for Donaghy, who had arrived in Melbourne little more than a decade earlier to work as a rugby league journalist. The chief job could have been a daunting prospect for Donaghy, now 36, who back then was the same age as some of the team’s star players, and had just become a father for the second time, with daughter Pippa. However, in his switch from the press to sports administration Donaghy had amassed a long history of experience at the club, including a stint as the media manager, steadying the ship during the salary cap scandal, which broke in 2010. He went on to a role as general manager of the Brisbane Lions in the AFL, but returned to the Storm three years later; within two years of his homecoming, he was CEO. “I think because I was in the industry, it didn’t feel foreign to me from that point of view,” Donaghy says of being appointed so young. “But I must say, when I look back at that time, maybe they were mad to have appointed a 32-year-old. But I’m glad I got over that and took the opportunity when it was presented.” Some of the high profile backers of Donaghy, including one of Storm’s major shareholders Gerry Ryan of caravan company Jayco, continue to be huge supporters and mentors. “I had a lot of encouragement internally, and certainly the board said to me that we’ve all been very fortunate in our business careers to have some success, and at some point in our career someone gave us an opportunity – over to you,” he says. They wouldn’t be regretting their decision. In many ways Donaghy has had the Midas touch with Storm, Melbourne’s only NRL side, helping to implement a plan by the major shareholders, chairman Bart Campbell, Matt Tripp and Ryan. As well as winning the NRL premiership in 2017, since Donaghy started as CEO he has led his team to an extraordinary boom off-field. Those achievements include increasing the club’s membership from 15,000 in 2015 to 25,000 fans and growing, 18,000-plus average match crowds at AAMI Park, and turning the business

A focus on culture and character has helped a young CEO recalibrate the fortunes of Melbourne’s NRL club.

side of the club from million-dollar losses to clocking a profit. A modest Donaghy puts it down to a team effort, not his leadership. “There are only 16 of these jobs in the country,” Donaghy says. “So in terms of a dream job, yes it is. But it’s an amazing job because of the people we have got here.” There is no question that the wider NRL has an image problem related to the off-field behaviour of some of its players, including former Dally M medal winner Ben Barba of the North Queensland Cowboys, who was recently banned for life by the league after allegations of domestic violence. However, at Melbourne Storm there is a culture that is envied across the NRL. Donaghy and his team have carefully worked at how they deal with the reality of a team full of young men, many of them away from home for the first time. “We have three full-time staff in the players’ wellbeing space and we’ve had a psychologist who has been part of staff for the past two years and she is outstanding,” Donaghy says. “They are all young men, they’re all exposed to challenges throughout that period of life, and how they deal with it is really important. “When they come to the club we are putting them in the right environments, we are training them up and educating them on expectations, what’s required of them – not just being a Storm player, but being a role model.” Proudly walking through their offices at AAMI Park on to the vast, empty stadium, Donaghy speaks warmly of the club’s family atmosphere and its attitude to “bad eggs”. “Talent’s one thing, but character is probably more important,” Donaghy says. “You’ve got to have talent to play the game,

there is no doubt about that, but you have to have the right character to fit in here. You need to buy into what the football club’s about. If you buy in, you succeed.” In the very old days, the players’ common room may have had a fridge full of Victoria Bitter in the corner, but now the space is full of kids’ toys. “It’s so great to hear kids’ voices screaming through the building,” Donaghy says. “Often they are a young [Cameron] Smith, or a young [Billy] Slater; there have always been kids floating around Storm for as long as it’s been in existence, and long after I’ve gone it needs to continue because family is such an important part of the club.” The legacy left by the now-retired champion Billy Slater and former long-time player Cooper Cronk is not just of on-field statistics but also a contribution to the values and culture at the Storm. Like Donaghy, they are natural leaders. Add to the mix the loyalty and passion of the long-time coach Craig Bellamy and captain Cameron Smith, and there is a lot for the young players to be inspired by. Being a CEO in any sporting club, especially at a club like Storm where there is a lot of interstate travel, is very demanding. As well as young Pippa, Donaghy and his wife Sharyn have a son Hugh, five. “You can’t do this job by yourself,” he says. “I’ve got this gratitude for her and the kids and how they’re able to understand it’s a pretty [demanding] job. “She is very tolerant.” ● NRL SEASON 2019 \ Melbourne Storm opens the season against the Brisbane Broncos on Thursday, March 14, at AAMI Park, Melbourne. ● melbournestorm.com.au

ournalist Monica Tan had just hit her early 30s, had travelled the world and was revelling in her dream job at The Guardian when a crisis of sorts struck. Despite the odd trek in Tasmania and trips to Perth and Melbourne for work, the self-declared “hipster, Asian girl townie” barely knew the country of her birth; that vast expanse of Australia beyond the urban fringes was a huge mystery to her. She set about changing that by chucking in her job, stuffing her Toyota RAV4 full of water tanks, jerrycans and sleeping bags and setting off on a sixmonth, 30,000-kilometre trip through some of the most remote parts of the continent. Stranger Country reads as a highly entertaining travelogue and a searing critique of race relations in Australia, and the ignorance many
have about key aspects of our Indigenous history. We feel as though we’re in the passenger seat as Tan takes us to Lake Mungo, Kakadu, the Kimberley, the Lurujarri Trail, Alice Springs and Darwin. She absorbs Aboriginal culture and traditions, while learning about the dispossession, massacres and other shameful episodes of our past. She gives a great insight into the important role Chinese Australians played in building the country,. Lighter moments abound as Tan comes across

I'm the quiet one and she's also my biggest critic.” The Melbourne comedian, who quit working as a tax consultant in 2013 to produce his first TV show Legally Brown for SBS, says he doesn't regret making the career switch. It has led to plenty more work, including his Channel 7 production, Orange is the New Brown. But his new comedy show, Basic Idiot, is as close as it gets to real time with the popular star.

“It's a show largely about me,” Hussain explains. “I'm a dad now and am mindful that I have to be a father figure to my kid and navigating fatherhood while also maintaining the rage. It's all very complicated – so the show is sort of me reconciling all of my different lives.” The popular comic attracts more than 500 people to his comedy shows during festival season and navigates the topics of racism, politics and religion while dispelling stereotypes along the way. He has a dig at Aussie culture and Muslim faith. His most famous wisecrack was about being confused for an Uber driver when turning up to have dinner at the restaurant instead. “Stand-up is the purest form of comedy and it's the most memorable for everybody involved,” he says. “It's live, personal and in the moment and you can't ignore the elephant in the room. Sometimes
something happens on the way to a gig and I'll include it in a show. If it's newsworthy, you have to go there and audiences are most excited when an act is relatable.” Hussain, who met his wife Shaheeda Abdulla while studying at university, says he always wanted to be a young father – together they are raising their young son Eesa. And what does his mum make of his career switch so far? “Well, she initially wondered how I would make a future telling jokes, but now she can see I am doing OK,” he says. “She loves the shows, comes to half of them and laughs before the punchlines. If I refer to her in the show, she stands up and takes a full 360 [degree] bow. I don't think she's going anywhere.” ●

anu Feildel has confirmed that My Kitchen Rules will return next year for its 11th season. Despite falling victim to the ratings phenomenon that is Married At First Sight, Channel 7 is sticking by MKR and it isn’t going anywhere. “We will be back next year,” the chef and host says. “It’s been 10 years and it’s been fantastic, it’s still so great to work on.” Sitting in a Melbourne cafe, Feildel says he appreciates that 10 years is a long time in television, and for a show many industry figures didn’t think would last in the beginning. When MKR started, MasterChef Australia was already a huge hit in the reality food genre for Channel 10, and it took a couple of years for MKR to settle in. The hard work and tougher early days are not lost on Feildel, who has a great working relationship and friendship with his co-host Pete Evans. “I understand that this is a long time for a show like this to still be on television,” he says. “How do I feel about it? I feel pleased and I feel we obviously
have done a great job. Do I feel older? Yes.” This time 10 years ago Feildel could not have dreamed he would become one of Australia’s most popular television stars on the back of MKR. “My life has changed drastically and I’m not taking it for granted,” he says. “I’ve got a beautiful lifestyle, I’ve got a beautiful family and I’ve got a great job. I even did a little bit of acting last year. “All those things, you know, if I had of stayed in France and worked as a chef, may have never happened. It is a fantastic life.” For the first time, Channel 7 will have two series of MKR in one year. The next series, rumoured to be an all-star version set in restaurants, will start filming in July, before taping of the regular 11th series of MKR kicks off. Feildel hopes to celebrate more accomplished cooks and higher scores in that series, and in all futures series of MKR. “I want to see better cooks, better results and better food, instead of giving [scores of] twos and threes,” he says. “I don’t want to see that any more.” ●

EDUCATION & INNOVATION
A spiritual partnership Catholic Education Week 2019 recognises those who will shape the future.
A
t the start of the year, more than 150,000 Catholic students across Melbourne took the first steps on their educational journey, or eagerly returned to school after the long summer break. Nearly one in four Victorian students are part of the Catholic education system attending more than 500 schools across the state. This year, two new primary schools in Wollert and Sunbury joined the growing number of Catholic schools, and will celebrate Catholic Education Week for the first time in 2019. The annual event is an opportunity for all Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne to celebrate their Catholic identity, the pivotal role they play within their community and the strength of the sector. “Catholic education is committed to providing

quality, accessible faith and values-based schooling to all those who want it,” says Catholic Education Melbourne acting executive director Jim Miles. “We believe in a partnership with parents. Catholic education provides choice, allowing parents to find schools that best meet their children’s needs. Growing school numbers make it clear families appreciate the option.” The theme of Catholic Education Week 2019 is “Growing Young in Christ”, recognising the spirit, optimism and energy of the young people who attend Catholic schools. As well as a series of major events on this theme, the week will be marked by schools arranging activities to bring together students, staff, families and communities. The Catholic school system places great emphasis on

service to community and this is showcased during Catholic Education Week. “Catholic schools are seen as ... vital community hubs – anchor points that provide a sense of certainty and purpose and enduring values as Melbourne’s population booms,” Miles said. “New and expanding communities in and around Melbourne now expect that a Catholic school will be part of their neighbourhood and we work hard to meet this demand.”
‘
2019 \ This year, students, teachers, families and communities can take part in a range of activities and events in Melbourne, including: ■ Mass for Schools: The special Mass for Schools will be held on Friday, March 15, at 10am at St Patrick’s Cathedral, led by Archbishop Peter A Comensoli. Up to 2000 students are expected to gather in the nearby Treasury Gardens to listen to school bands, share a picnic lunch and make new friends. ■ Visual Arts Exhibition: The exhibition is a showcase for the colourful and thoughtful artwork created by primary and secondary students in the Melbourne Archdiocese. The works include painting, photography, sculpture, fashion and film. The exhibition is open between 9am-4pm on Tuesday, March 12 to Friday, March 15; and on Saturday, March 16 between 2-5pm at the Catholic Leadership Centre, 576 Victoria Parade, East Melbourne. ■ Young Speakers Colloquium: Senior secondary students will attend this event to listen to nspirational guest speakers and hear about the diverse life journeys that former Catholic students have embarked on. EDUCATION & INNOVATION
A celebration of faith

im Kelly has been part of Melbourne’s Catholic education system for 30 years, but this year he’s taken on another challenge as the foundation principal of the new Glowrey Catholic Primary School in Wollert. The school is at the heart of one of Melbourne’s busiest northern growth corridors and, at full capacity, will be able to accommodate around 600 prep to grade six students. This is Kelly’s third role as principal, but he says being able to build a school community from the ground up is particularly rewarding. “What you set up at the beginning is critical further down the track so it’s an honour to help build a school’s culture from day one,” he says. “Glowrey will be a school where students come

first. It will be a place of high-quality education where each child’s learning and social and emotional needs will be catered for, and a place where gospel values are lived and are visible in all that we do.” The school is named to honour Sister Dr Mary Glowrey who was born in 1887 in Birregurra in country Victoria. She was a humanitarian and medical doctor who may become Australia’s second saint after Sister Mary McKillop. Glowrey spent much of her life from the mid1920s improving access to healthcare in India. She transformed a modest mission into a hospital and her work and legacy continue in India today, with millions of men, women and children benefitting from the healthcare systems she put in place. The Glowrey Catholic Primary School motto – Service, Love, Justice – embodies the life and faith of Sister Dr Mary Glowrey, Kelly says. “She had a great love of God and of people and a strong sense of social justice,” he says. As part of the school’s first Catholic Education Week, Kelly and the school’s staff and students are
“For us, the theme is about making sure our Catholic identity is at the forefront of what we do.” embracing a series of events and activities inside and outside the classroom. “We will attend the Mass for Schools at St Patrick’s Cathedral and will take a representative group of students to the mass. New schools are showcased there and presented to the Archbishop and we will be part of that. I believe we will lead the entrance into the cathedral with the Archbishop and be involved in the liturgy of the mass, too.” The school will also celebrate by holding its first open day with families and the community invited to visit and learn more about the school, its facilities and its Catholic ethos. “We will showcase our learning and people can walk through the school and see the students at work and see what we are doing here. Our staff will do tours and students will also talk to visitors about what they are learning.”

Importantly, the week and its theme, “Growing Young in Christ”, will also be celebrated with students in the classroom. “For us, the theme is about making sure our Catholic identity is at the forefront of what we do,” he says. “Our students are currently learning about the life of Sister Dr Mary Glowrey and we are celebrating her life. There will be some fun activities for students to take part in and we will have a school assembly to celebrate the week, too. “Catholic Education Week is very special for us this year as it’s the first time we will mark the event. We have a new school and much to celebrate. In the busyness of school life, I think it’s a wonderful idea for everyone to stop and celebrate all that Melbourne’s Catholic schools offer to their communities.” ● SARAH MARINOS

ewly-launched Bowen & Queens is designed to take advantage of spectacular views over Port Philip Bay, the city, Albert Park Lake and the Royal Botanic Gardens. The 19-level residential development is sited between the gardens and lake and is two kilometres from the CBD. Its 214 residences have one to four bedrooms, many with a study. Nine two-storey penthouses crown the building, offering dramatic double-height living and customised interiors. Inspired by the natural surrounds and feng shui principles, Plus Architecture director Jessica Liew has used natural curves in the building’s design which features a recurring scallop motif. Wuzhong International (Aust) director David Yihou Shen says the developer’s objective is to deliver a spacious and genuine home with high quality amenity for residents. “We’re confident that the elegant design and warm finishes, complemented by sweeping views and the development’s ideal positioning, present a compelling opportunity to purchasers.” ● LIZ MCLACHLAN

THE BOTANIC COLLECTION \ AT THE PINNACLE OF LIVING
A
s one of Melbourne’s foremost addresses, South Yarra’s Domain district offers an extraordinary lifestyle to a privileged few. A new precinct of 17 residences on Anderson Street, Kurneh Place and Domain Road will heighten this pleasure, creating a life of discreet and elegant indulgence beside the Royal Botanic Gardens. Since purchasing the L-shaped 2650-squaremetre parcel of three neighbouring sites in 2016, developer Butch Sadikay has worked with prominent designers to create The Botanic Collection. Award-winning specialist architects Rob Mills and Powell & Glenn and leading landscape architect Jack Merlo have designed four distinct landscaped buildings, each with three to seven large-scale, high-end residences. Kay & Burton projects director Damon Krongold says The Botanic Collection takes Melbourne living to a fresh pinnacle – “it’s about enjoyment to a level that few can aspire to, as well as complementing the beauty of the precinct”. “It is utterly South Yarra – all elegant discretion outside and indulgence inside.” ● LIZ MCLACHLAN

If there’s one thing sure to drive the Chapel Street tourists crazy, it’s a cute little thoroughfare called Oxford. “Free street parking,” they crow, and chuck a left. Oh, no, you don’t. Not down Oxford Street, where a sudden dead end funnels shoppers into car parks and keeps this low-rise bit of South Yarra – which looks much as it did 30 years ago – in peace and harmony for the residents. This two-storey house was completed in 2018. Designed by Drew Cole and built by Lumiere, it’s brilliantly sunny, with full-length windows and huge black-framed sliders opening to courtyard gardens landscaped by Ben Scott. (The style is a reminder of an earlier Melbourne architect, Wayne Gillespie, who used to live around the corner in Cunningham Street.) Two living areas and three zoned double bedrooms make a sleek abode for a family. Despite the location, this place is well secluded. A tall wall protects the front lawn, to which the living room – chic in European oak, with a Heat & Glo gas log fireplace flanked by grey stone sideboards – opens via sliding doors. Follow the oak hallway past the powder room and laundry to the open-plan kitchen, dining and family area. In the kitchen a stone waterfall island is the workstation for master chefs, who will enjoy the Miele 900-milllimetre gas cooktop, twin wall ovens, dishwasher and twin Franke sinks. The butler’s pantry has a second dishwasher. In the dining/family area, oak floorboards flow to fulllength windows and stacker sliders. The grey-paved courtyard has a Beefeater barbecue shaded by bamboo

Star-panelled ceilings, fretwork lace and a tiered, tiled, mirrored fireplace give a strange distinction to what appears quite a normal Edwardian semi. The two-storey house is ideal for a school-aged family. The zoned bedrooms include two main suites – the ground-floor, box-bay classic and an attic hideaway with skylight windows. Both have en suites. From the ornate central living room (with that fireplace), follow the hall past two bedrooms, powder room, laundry and main bathroom to the modern family-dining area, where porcelain tiles gleam below a cathedral ceiling and timber doors open to a north-facing deck. There’s off-street parking via the laneway. ● ALISON BARCLAY Agent: Jellis Craig, Kevin O’Brien 0447 008 000 Price: $1.6 million-$1.7 million Auction: 11am, March 9

Whoever buys this property will be purchasing a significant slice of history as well as a grand design. This home was built for renowned architect George Raymond Johnson – the man behind North Melbourne, Collingwood and Northcote town halls – in 1869. A rendered-brick Victorian house with a white-gravel path, manicured gardens and veggie patches, it’s heritage but not too fancy for family living. Features include leadlight windows, cast-iron fireplaces and detailed architraves. A formal lounge and dining room has a bay window and pressed metal ceiling. The timber kitchen leads to a second living area and covered deck. A lower level has under-house storage and a workshop. ● ERIN MUNRO Agent: RT Edgar, Brett Vanderwert 0411 609 363 Price: $3.2 million-$3.52 million Auction: 10.30am, March 16
