Ask any Melburnian with a background in (or appreciation for) design and they’ll tell you, proudly, that the difference between Sydney and the Yarra River city is our European sensibility. There is a classicism to how we approach dressing, dining and, as the architects in our cover story explain, building homes. For anyone embarking on a renovation, their view of what constitutes timeless design may inspire. In an era when trends move faster than an Olympic sprinter in full flight, it’s lovely to acknowledge that some creations are intended to last a lifetime. ●

““I am Matthew Dawkins ” … and I’m an arborist I was 18 when I discovered I wasn’t afraid of

heights, as before I studied environmental science and completed a certificate III in arboriculture, I worked as a project firefighter in Gippsland. I was part of the rappel crew, where I jumped out of a helicopter and descended via a rope through the tree canopies into a remote area. It felt like controlled chaos, which is quite similar to a lot of tree work. People think arborists just remove trees, but my work frequently involves wildlife, like on the Yan Yean Road upgrade – the project Reynolds Tree Care, the company I work for, was involved in. It affected us emotionally to cut down so many trees, but it was good to implement mitigation measures. An onsite zoologist inspected every tree before and after it was felled. He checked for bird hollows, and peeled back fissured bark to look for micro bats. If any wildlife was found, it had to be relocated. I love the koala work we do for Parks Victoria. At Mount Eccles National Park in western Victoria, koalas have over-grazed the manna gums, so the population has to be managed. We climb up and wave a yellow and red flag on the end of a telescopic pole above the female koala’s head. They don’t like the flashing colour and come down. When the ground crew catches them, they are taken to a vet station, have their health checked, and a contraceptive implanted. I know it sounds silly, but after work many of us climb more trees. It’s generally practice for the Victorian Tree Climbing Championships, in which I just competed. This year I entered five events. Aerial rescue was the most difficult – I had to safely remove a dummy (the size and weight of a person) from a 15-metre height in under six minutes while vocalising each step. What I enjoy about my job is working with trees. I relish the physicality of it. As well as being part of a crew, I like doing private work where I can help people find positive solutions. Most people, once they get past the point of being scared of potential danger, will say how much they love a tree – its shade, the bird nests, and the kookaburras that have visited. I think, “Why do you want it removed?” It’s because they don’t understand how a tree works. ●

hen it comes to timeless design in Melbourne, award-winning architect Rob Mills of Rob Mills Architecture & Interiors is well versed in the conversation of what makes the cut. “A common thread that goes through all timeless design is that it must be classically proportioned,” says Mills, who has been in the business for 27 years. Known for his state-of-the-art residential work (his firm specialises in interiors as well as architecture), Mills is driven by a modern vision with an acknowledgment of what's come before. “The use of symmetry must be strong, the interiors should be familiar, often with English overtones,” he says. “Timeless in Melbourne would always have an English style about it because that's where we come from – it has to relate in some way to our English heritage. “The gold rush and the boom time of that era really informed our buildings. Bendigo is a great example of that architectural grandeur without being garish...materials need to be familiar, too,” adds Mills, who counts the NGV International by Roy Grounds as his favourite building in the city. His award-winning contemporary conversion of an Armadale warehouse, which he now calls home, is luxurious yet industrial simplicity at its finest. It's part of the reason why Mills has built his empire into a trusted one. That, and his deep respect for architectural heritage – evident in the Kenley Court residence, one of his creations – where the past and present converge on a hill of contemporary minimalism and individual expressionism. “I grew up in a Victorian terrace in a dead-end street in Malvern,” says Mills of his childhood memories. “It was tree-lined and very safe for kids to play. The home came with high ceilings and large windows – there was a lot of space. “I would say the grandness of my residential work salutes that memory. You'll always find tall ceilings and large spaces in everything I design. “I like to create an environment that is on a different scale to most homes you see; that really characterises my work.” Mills says residential homes in Melbourne have shifted from boastful to understated exteriors – it's less about facade-ism and more about what's within

that matters most. “Early on in my career, clients wanted a grand facade when it came to their homes,” Mills says. “The ambition for that is less so today and I think they're much more interested in the living experience within the building. There is more responsibility in the interior than the exterior now and it's a very common shift we're seeing in architecture. “Having worked for nearly three decades as an architect I feel we have truly learnt our craft, but the principles have always been the same.”

“ARM’s sunken forecourt garden at Victoria’s

usband-and-wife team Chris and Kathryn Rak of architecture and interior design firm Robson Rak believe timeless design is where a formality seems effortless. “Being a design-savvy city, Melbourne design can be best described as understated yet highly considered; priding itself on the rejection of pomp and shortterm trends,” Chris Rak says. Their properties Pavilion House and Toorak2 are reflections of two very distinct Melbourne suburbs. “The addition of the Pavilion House, with its sandy-coloured limestone walls, successfully reflects the Brighton beachside aesthetic,” he says. “The site is expansive with vistas to connect with a wonderful landscape at every turn through the house. “Toorak2 has a formality about it, which one would expect from a home in Toorak. The interiors are rich yet restrained – very Melbourne. “Both projects are a reflection of the honesty and authenticity that Melbourne design tries to achieve.” The couple also count Grounds’ NGV International as among the best architectural examples in Melbourne. “We love the NGV International for the original Roy Grounds design and then the Mario Bellinidesigned renovations in 2003.” Mills heads to Milan's Salone del Mobile (Milan Design Week) next month to focus on expanding his business in Europe and to launch a creative short film The Search with a dinner at the Pirelli Skyscraper on April 9. “Going international is the next big step for us,” he says. “I visit Milan every year. I love to immerse myself in the Italian culture and it informs my design. The Italians are the finest craftsmen of the world and have a big influence over construction of homes in Melbourne.” ●

Shrine of Remembrance is my favourite architectural project. Crater-like excavated gardens form a submerged alternative entry to a solemn hall of columns below the shrine; invisible but ingenious. The range of spaces triggers powerful emotional responses.”

eciding on a colour scheme for a bathroom is no easy feat. Unlike most other areas in a house, this room is predominately made up of expensive fixtures such as showers, baths and basins that are designed to last decades, and the permanency of tiled walls instead of paint. It is therefore little surprise that most home owners opt for a similarly safe and white interior palette, but the recent collections of leading bathroom designers are a refreshing game changer. British brand Victoria + Albert Baths has just announced a new colour service enabling customers to personalise the exterior of their free-standing tubs and basins to one of 194 gloss and matte colours. Now, home owners can now easily integrate a pop of statement colour into their bathrooms without having commit to an allencompassing scheme. “For too long we’ve all been playing safe with bathroom design, but increasingly we’re looking to introduce personality,” says Emma Joyce, Victoria + Albert’s spokesperson. “Colour is a great way of doing this and you can dial it up or down depending on how brave you’re feeling.” Joyce suggests choosing one or two areas of the bathroom, such as a showpiece tile or bath, to experiment with colour. “If you’d like to introduce colour in a more controlled way, perhaps opt for a painted basin, which will create an impact in any bathroom or even a small cloakroom.” Tapware is another way to add of a point of difference to an otherwise neutral bathroom. Melbourne-based manufacturer Sussex has released its 2019 colour showcase featuring fashion-inspired shades of green and blue. “Tapware should be like the final piece of jewellery you put on – it finishes a room and adds flair and finesse to a space,” Sussex director Vanessa Katsanevakis says. “Applying these seasonal colours to the bathroom is easier than one might think. Forest green and

periwinkle blue sit comfortably alongside chrome accents, while the muted stone neutrals complement brass and gold highlights.” Sussex can even colour match a paint swatch and apply this to the tapware of a customer’s choosing for a truly bespoke bathroom. “Because we manufacture everything locally, we can be very agile with colour experimentation and it leads to some really beautiful and unexpected combinations,” Katsanevakis says. “Five years ago, chrome accounted for about 95 per cent of tapware finishes sold in Australia. For Sussex today, that number has dropped to about 30 per cent as we see more and more demand for colour, patina and matte finishes.” For those unable to renovate their bathroom, colourful accessories can create a big impact and have the benefit of being easily changeable. “I cannot go past high-quality bathroom textiles that can instantly transform any space – and in that category, Missoni Home offer the best selection of

inspiring colour, pattern and textural options,” says Felicity Rulikowski, founder of interiors retailer Safari Living. “You can select your colour palette, then add layers with potted plants, flowers and ceramics.” Adairs product manager Natalie Chylinski also recommends bold towel colours and textures along with indoor plants that add a sense of calm. “Be areful to not overcomplicate it. Don’t introduce too many colours, and don’t add too many textures,” Chylinski says. “As a rule of thumb, I never incorporate any more than two hues in my bathroom interiors. I’ll chose a darker hue and a lighter hue, that way the two I’ve chosen add depth, create a nice contrast and complement the existing interiors beautifully.” ● ● vandabaths.com/aus/australasia/ ● sussextaps.com.au ● adairs.com.au ● safariliving.com

utumn is the perfect season for getting stuck into gardening in preparation for the cooler months. This time of year is particularly conducive to repotting any plants in need of new soil, allowing them room to grow and fresh nutrients to remain healthy over winter. The house plant revival has inspired numerous new pot and hanger ranges that not only help plants to thrive, but also instantly refresh the look of any indoor or outdoor garden space. One material that’s proving particularly popular in these collections is terrazzo, as seen in the recent range by Prahran interiors boutique and gallery Fenton & Fenton (above). “They seem to look good just about anywhere, inside or out, by making a statement without detracting from the greenery,” Fenton & Fenton

director Lucy Fenton says. The original natural stone and concrete version of terrazzo was commonly used on the floors of mid-century homes, but is now being embraced in faux forms and in homewares. Among other local labels featuring terrazzo are Fox & Ramona, which produces concrete pots able to be turned over and used as a side table, and Capra Designs, which makes terrazzo-style pots from resin. Rattan and macrame are other retro interior trends making their way over to the garden market. “They add an organic natural element to a space and they also add height and interest to a room,” says Fenton of her label’s rattan standing planters. To extend your green thumb, invest in a more sculptural planter that serves as a standalone work of art, such as the hand-carved limestone pieces by

Den Holm, or an elegant aluminium hanger by Lump Sculpture Studio (above). Horticulturalists Dominic Hooghuis and Duncan Hilder, of mobile greenhouse and nursery The Plant Runner, are fans of cotton rope hangers by Elk & Horn for giving plants some extra height in the absence of adequate floor space. “For the outdoors, Slow Ties produces some incredible hangers made from industrial rope so they can withstand the elements. These hangers are big and really make a statement,” Hooghuis says. Hooghuis also recommends plastic self-watering pots as an affordable and foolproof choice for beginners. Find these pots at Mr Kitly, which collaborates with Decor on range of styles. Whatever planter you choose – perhaps even from a different era – mix and match with varied plants for individuality, recommends Fenton. “We adore vintage planters...and we often have amazing vintage concrete swans from the 1950s and other quirky sculptural planters,” Fenton says. “They look amazing with succulents or bright-coloured flowers bursting out of them.” Certain plants will thrive better in indoor planters and pots than traditional garden beds. This is particularly true of some tropical plants that will not survive outside throughout a Melbourne winter. “We love working with trailing plants like Rhipsalis, Epipremnum and Monstera adansonii to soften edges and spill out over bookshelves and corners,” Hooghuis says. “For statement pieces, Strelitzia nicolai – the giant bird of paradise – and Ficus elastica really make an impact.” Hooghuis says it’s important not to overwater plants, to wipe them once a month to remove dust, and use a plant food to help with growth and keeping pests at bay. ● ● theplantrunner.com ● lump.com.au ● fentonandfenton.com.au

AUGUST - OCTOBER \ The season of preparation

As soon as the days start getting longer, the gardening year begins, Darin Bradbury of Mint Pool and Landscape Design says. “Start considering where your preparations are at for the end of winter and start of spring,” he advises. “This is very important. How are you preparing for heat and water loss that will occur in summer?” Bradbury, a multi-award-winner at the Melbourne Garden Show, stresses Melbourne has “crap soils…not very fertile…[with] poor structure”. Many local soils are hydrophobic, which means any moisture beads to the top and never soaks to root level, he says. “The first thing you should be doing is using a bio-mulch, which has a composting material in it,” he says. “Water is absolutely critical in Melbourne when it comes to our gardens.” Soil condition is “everything”, agrees Dave Franklin, of Franklin Landscape & Design, who is a familiar face on Channel Nine’s The Block.

Home gardeners should dig their planting holes “twice as big as they think they will need”, he says. “Put in some good fertiliser, wet it down well, and you really cannot go wrong,” Franklin says. “Whatever you do this season, it will always pay you back in summer.” Seasonal tip: If planning a vegetable patch, prepare and plant in this period – before the heat of summer arrives, and after late-winter frosts. ●

The good gardening guide

OCTOBER - JANUARY \ The party season

FEBRUARY - MAY \ The seasonal clean-up

JUNE - AUGUST \ The season of rest

In summer, savvy suburban gardeners should aim to put down their rakes by the week before Christmas, Franklin suggests. If you have been diligently fertilising in spring, you should “have the lawn mower ready to go”, he advises. “You will be busy in November and December getting it all done by Christmas as it is the pinnacle, when your garden is on social show,” he says. “If you take a long holiday, just remember the story of Jack and the Beanstalk is true. Go away for a month and don’t be surprised if you come back and the pumpkins are in your kitchen window.” Seasonal tip: Water features are fabulous in summer gardens, but choose a spot in diluted sunlight to minimise algae and evaporation. ●

The annual party is over and “it is time to get back to work”, Franklin says. This means home-owners must sow some serious hours into maintenance: pruning, mulching and clearing dead leaves and plants. “Deciduous plants will lose leaves and so there is now a lot more sun coming into the garden and that is great for young plants,” he says. “It is a good time to get rid of all the garbage. The more leaves you get rid of in autumn, the less to get rid of in winter when it’s not so good outside.” Another task at this time is laying mesh to protect plants from the cold. Seasonal tip: Grasses are at their prime so keep up the mowing and watering. “Lawns are exposed to the sun and tend to really take off and look amazing,” Bradbury says. ●

Geraniums often get a raw deal but Franklin insists are “not as bad as everyone makes out” and are a sweet plant option if wanting garden colour in winter. “They come in a wide variety of colours and are very hardy so will do OK in the winter, and coastal plants are also going to do OK,” he says. Grasses tend to “do it tough” if irrigation and plumbing is sub-standard at this time of year. “If water cannot drain away, the weeds will overgrow your lawn,” Franklin says. Seasonal tip: If your family has youngsters, it is a good time to get them tending herb gardens. ● ● franklinld.com ● mintdesign.net.au

Forever in style

f you’re the kind of person who likes to stickybeak among a stranger’s fabulous wardrobe, then the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival exhibition Fashion Redux is tailormade for you. VAMFF chief executive Graeme Lewsey says the idea came from wanting consumers to see fashion as something that can be re-invented and therefore re-worn in these sustainability-aware times, as well as allowing the roles of designer and stylist to merge. “The Melbourne Museum is our home for the festival and when we were told that they had all

these amazing garments in their archive, we saw what a treasure trove it was.” And so, a collection of Melbourne creatives were asked to sift through the archives and re-imagine their picks in a collaborative exhibition. Sisters and businesswomen Stef and Jess Dadon (the duo behind social media powerhouse How Two Live) picked out a metallic Prue Acton dress with detached sleeves that Dynasty-era Joan Collins would’ve raked her talons upon. Milliner Melissa Jackson discovered the perfect equestrian wear via a dress recycled from a horse rug. Costume Designer Marion Boyce (The Dressmaker Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries Dressmaker, Mysteries) chose a 1960s Italian lurex coat designed by Madame Serini – who lived in Melbourne at the time – as her starting point. “I’ve changed the shape of the jacket by using corsetry underneath, so I’ve opened it up and given it life,” Boyce says. “I really love Italian fabric; it’s got a craziness to it, and I love the Italian sense of humour.” For Boyce, it was important that the finished product was eye-catching but not

overwhelming. “I’m really drawn to fashion, and I think it works when you’re able to wear something and it doesn’t wear you. When I saw this jacket, I wanted to step out in it. I wanted to have a cocktail while wearing it.” “I could see it being worn by someone with a joie de vivre, who has a great lust for life – someone like the actress Tilda Swinton, who wears clothes with

such elegance.” But the result wasn’t supposed to be all fun and frivolity. “I really hope that people take away the fact that just because it’s a ’60s coat, it doesn’t have to stay like that. You can reinvent and change things, and we need to start recycling more and realise that clothes can have a long life,” Boyce says. Other garments in the exhibition include an 1880s wedding dress designed for Mary Anderson (daughter of famed architect Lloyd Tayler) which was selected by couturiers J’Aton, as well as a heavily decorated ’90s jacket by JAG, chosen by stylist Ntombi Moyo. Melbourne, Boyce explains, is the perfect place for this display. “Melbourne fashion has much more of a European bent to it, but it’s also got a twist to it and it’s very different. I notice it a lot when I come back to Australia. There’s a quirkiness about it,” she says. ● FASHION REDUX \ Exhibition at the Melbourne Museum until March 31 ● museumsvictoria.com.au

ustralian contemporary artist Patricia Piccinini has been taking us on a hyper-realist journey for more than two decades – her art practice combines sculpture, installation and video designed to get us thinking outside the square. The 53-year-old Melbourne based artist explores the natural and artificial world through her works – a converging of surrealism, science and the possibility of what could be. Her latest work, The Clearing Clearing, on

show at Enter at the Lyon Housemuseum Galleries (its inaugural exhibition), continues to question life’s purpose. “The The Clearing is an atmospheric and meditative journey through a space,” says Piccinini, who explains the work was inspired by her last show Curious Affection at Goma in Brisbane. “That’s what happens with artists like me; we take a step forward when opportunities to make new works are presented.”

Did you know?

Famous work

PETER HENNESSEY

Piccinini represented Australia at the Venice Biennale in 2003, is currently exhibiting in her first Copenhagen show, and says The Clearing is a bizarre landscape inspired by science, fertility and climate change. Through sculptures of hybrid life forms, Piccinini blurs the line between what is natural and artificial: “Over the years I have built a sort of alternative world that exists just beyond the real world we live in.” Some find her creatures disturbing – they’re humanlike. But there’s little reason to be afraid. “I want people to feel an emotional connection to these sculptures,” Piccinini says. “It’s designed to stir an empathy and make you feel a connection you maybe can’t quite articulate with words.” ●

HILARY WALKER

The Clearing features a mix of plant and animal life – it’s where chimeras are in part based on The Venus of Willendorf, sculptures that date to 30,000 BC – while other ovarian-looking species hint at fertility. “This work brings together a bunch of things. These are the size of organs,” she says. “I ask the question ‘could this be the way we cultivate body parts?’ Is this a bad thing? The idea of cultivating organs is something I look forward to as I know what it’s like to be at the mercy of medicine and wanting your loved one to survive at whatever cost.” Piccinini’s mother was diagnosed with liver cancer at 39 years of age and died when Patricia was 26. Her work references this pain and the possibility of what could have been. “I want my work to act as an anaesthetic experience; a moment where people can kind of block off the outside world,” she says.

A house such as this makes us wish we could shake hands with the arts and crafts architects of the 1920s. They’ve bequeathed us so many landmarks, despite being ratbags in their day. “Don’t build crap” might have been their motto. These idealists refused to get with the times if it meant chucking up something cheap and flimsy. This mansion combines the best of ye olde English history – wood panelling, attic-style bedrooms, mullioned timber windows – with the Australian love of the outdoors. Built in 1923, it was renovated and extended by the previous owners. Oak parquetry and beige carpet make a cool counterpoint to white walls, and there are three large living areas, two of which open to a north-facing garden designed by Rick Eckersley with lawns, vine-clad pergolas and an in-ground trampoline. The dine-in kitchen is easily one of the best in Melbourne. The wide central hall has double doors to the carpeted library, which has bookcases below a coffered ceiling. Across the hall, the living room has a pressed-metal and marble fireplace. Two pairs of french doors lead north to a sunny terrace. The adjoining dining room has a box bay window with a cushioned seat, setting the scene for corporate entertaining on a lavish scale. Contemplative types will appreciate the spacious study, which has a built-in desk. There’s a powder room next door. In the modern extension, parquetry and mullioned french doors continue the theme of excellent craftsmanship. The kitchen, ivory and sleek in marble-style Caesarstone with a huge island, will make catering a joy forever. There’s a

Nyora is a classic of the Gascoigne Estate. Leadlight, fretwork and beautiful fireplaces uphold the old virtues, yet this solid-brick Edwardian house is nimbly suited to modern family life. The single-level, freestanding house opens north to a covered entertaining area and a pool. Impressively renovated, it has a box-bay sitting room and a front main bedroom with an en suite. The original dining room has a fireplace. Three further bedrooms share two bathrooms, one with a spa. The rear family and meals areas open to the barbecue terrace. The granite kitchen has Bosch appliances. The laundry, mud room, carport and shed complete a smart address walkable to Malvern station. ● ALISON BARCLAY Agent: Marshall White, John Manton 0411 444 930 Price: $4 million Auction: 11.30am, March 30

With a solid-brick form and curves for days, this fourbedroom house has some serious art deco pedigree. Built in the 1930s, it sprawls across two storeys and features decorative ceilings, timber floors and windows with etched glass designs. Rooms are spacious, from the long family room and main bedroom (with walk-in, en suite and private courtyard) by the entry foyer, to the open living, meals and kitchen area at the rear. Kitchen appliances are Gaggenau and Liebherr and there’s a butler’s pantry. Outside there’s a deck, landscaped gardens and pool. Upstairs, one bedroom has a curved balcony and another a separate sunroom that afford views to the Dandenongs. ● ERIN MUNRO Agent: Marshall White, Andrew Hayne 0418 395 349 Price: $3 million-$3.3 million Auction: 10.30am, March 30

This renovated and extended home offers light-saturated interiors and modern design. While three double bedrooms with floor-to-ceiling built-in wardrobes offer stylish comfort, the shared spaces are the heroes. First there’s the bathroom, with freestanding soaker tub, exposed-brick feature wall with north-facing window, floating vanity, shower and heated towel rail. Finally, the open-plan living and dining area is serviced by an impressive kitchen (with stone island, bespoke pendant lighting, Ilve freestanding stove and black Schock sink) and bathed in natural light. Highlights include Baltic pine floors, study nook, hydronic heating, pizza oven and courtyard. ● LEISHA KAPOR Agent: Hockingstuart, Walter Summons 0438 576 233 Price: $1.5 million-$1.6 million Auction: 11.30am, March 30
