There isn’t another Australian like Anh Do. He is truly unique. When the comedian, writer and actor went back to school, as an adult, to make more of his love of painting, he did something so few of us ever embark on. We get into the rhythm of life and leave old passions latent. But going back to the brush was a stroke of genius. His ABC interview program returns, and with his combination of wit, warmth and a gift for portraiture using “a whole bunch of cake-decorating knives”, he paints a fascinating picture of Australians from all walks of life. Journalist Luke Dennehy met him for our feature. ●

behaviour and the impact of mental health, so I studied clinical psychology at university. I’d had a very sheltered upbringing and was concerned that I’d be too naive to actually assist people. So, how do you cram in a couple of years of world experience? I thought that joining the police force would be a pretty good place to start. The idea was that I’d join Victoria Police for a little while and go back to clinical psychology, but when I joined it was a match made in heaven. There’s something different every day, and it really pushed you in terms of critical thinking, responsiveness and the way you deal with people. There isn’t a day that goes by with policing that you can’t contribute in some way, make somebody’s day better, improve the organisation or help make the community safer and more resilient. Once I left the force, the biggest issue for me was the lack of emails, telephone calls and texts 24/7. I found it really difficult to give myself back that time and fill it in a meaningful way. I joined the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF) because I knew they were looking for someone to fill in the CEO role and I had a personal connection to ovarian cancer – my sister-in-law died of ovarian cancer. I offered to stay for six months until they recruited, but I loved the work and I’m still happily there two years later. I’m an ambassador this year for Witchery’s White Shirt Campaign, kicking off soon, during which Witchery donates 100 per cent of the gross proceeds from every shirt sold directly to OCRF. The ultimate aim of OCRF is a cure for ovarian cancer. Early detection is key. We’re now in the process of funding a number of projects and research initiatives where they’re pursuing clinical trials of early detection tests. We’re also funding a number of individualisedtherapeutics projects where they work out the best treatment, drugs and approach for a specific person. ● WITCHERY’S WHITE SHIRT CAMPAIGN \ Starts April 10 ● ocrf.com.au ● witchery.com.au/about/ocrf

A portrait of Anh Do 6

“I am not immune to things going on around the world, but I also try to look for reasons to be thankful for everything that comes my way ...” Once the portrait is finished – after a few hours in front of the subject – the final result is revealed. “I am so nervous before [the portrait is spun around] because I really care what they think,” he says. Do’s distinctive style of portraiture comes from an old university job while he was studying law in the 1990s. “When I went back to TAFE, the teacher showed us a range of utensils you could use, from brushes to pallet knives, all sorts of things,” he says. “I remembered at university that I worked as a cake decorator in a cheesecake shop. So when I started painting again, I bought myself a whole bunch of cake-decorating knives. “So when I paint, it’s like I’m decorating a cake.”

I
t was six years ago that Anh Do re-discovered his love of painting, something he had first enjoyed as a child after coming to Australia by boat in 1980 as a refugee from Vietnam. Despite his passion, it was a risk as Do, now 42, found himself out of his comfort zone. “I loved drawing as a little kid and when you get to high school, people tell you, ‘you should take art because you will score well’,” he says. “But I didn’t pick it and I ended up regretting it for many, many years until ... I went back to TAFE. “I walked in and I’m 36, going back to paint with 18-year-old kids. One kid came up to me and said ‘You look like Anh Do,’ and I said ‘that’s because I am’. He then goes ‘Nah, but geez you look like him,’ and walked away.” Thankfully for the arts and entertainment worlds, Do not only re-discovered his love for painting but it became obvious that he had a real gift. Since that TAFE course, he has established himself as a respected portrait artist – including winning the 2017 Archibald Prize People’s Choice Award for his portrait of actor Jack Charles – and has made four seasons of the ABC show Anh’s Brush With Fame. Network executives search far and wide for natural talent to helm the show, and Do has it in droves. The format involves prominent Australians from many different walks of life sitting for a portrait session with Do, as he interviews them about their lives. The fourth series airs from April 17 and features intriguing conversations with personalities including Lindy Chamberlein-Creighton (who was wrongly convicted over the death of baby daughter Azaria), former Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke and singer Dannii Minogue. Chamberlein-Creighton’s episode, in particular, is set to make headlines. “She told me years after what happened in 1980 when Azaria was killed, her son, who was now a teenager, was lying on the ground and the family dog walked across his back and he sat up in a cold sweat and was freaking out,” Do says. “Lindy asked him what was wrong, and he said it felt just like the time a dingo walked across his back.” With his natural and warm delivery, Do always gleans candid and sometimes very emotional and revealing interviews.

verything Do does is with his own brand of charm, and without ego, which has made him a popular character of stage and screen. As well as being one of Australia’s top comedians, he has also acted, appeared on Dancing With The Stars, released many children’s books and penned the top-selling autobiography The Happiest Refugee. There have been plans to turn the book, an

uplifting story but also one of peril and sacrifice, into a movie or television series. The Happiest Refugee follows Do and his remarkable family history, from escaping Vietnam to surving days at sea in a leaky fishing boat and becoming a famous comedian. “Like everyone, I have my up-and-down days, but if you look at things to be happy about, there are truckloads,” he says. “I’m not immune to things going on around the world, but I also try to look for reasons to be thankful for everything that comes my way, and for the life I get to live.” He now lives in Sydney with his wife Suzanne and their four children; Leon, Xavier, Luc and Summer. Family is everything to Do, and his kids help him with ideas when he writes children’s books (more are to be released this year). “We go on camping trips and say we drive for three hours, I’ll start a scenario, and just throw something out there ... like a girl gets lost in the forest, and we will go around the car and my kids continue the story, and all of the sudden we’ve got a new book called Wolf Girl that is actually coming out in July,” he says. Life for Do is not about sitting back and waiting for opportunities to unfold, and he is very happy balancing a variety of pursuits. “I always thought I’d get back into painting when I retired,” he says. “Then a really great mate passed away at age 50, and it made me realise, if I wait till I’m 65, you never know. If you love something, just do it now. “My son can play video games for eights hours’ straight, and it doesn’t feel like work. “I’m the same, I can paint for eight hours and it doesn’t feel like work, whereas when I used to be a law student, I would put off those law essays until the two hours before it was due.” ● ANH’S BRUSH WITH FAME \ New season starts on April 17, ABC and ABC iView.

America on a precipice LAST MONTH
T
ired of Winning was born out of a failure. A failure, Richard Cooke explains, of being in the US for the 2016 presidential election and not understanding the tectonic forces that would propel Donald Trump into the Oval Office. So, he returned in the lead-up to last year’s midterm elections to get a grip on not so much the Trump presidency, but how contemporary America is quickly slipping into decline. Avoiding the well-reported “rust-belt” states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, Cooke ventures into places like Huntington, West Virginia, where a quarter of the population is addicted to opioids. Cooke takes us to the hurricane-battered state of North Carolina, where local authorities are wilfully turning a blind eye to the impact of climate change because it could affect coastal real estate prices. We get a disturbing insight into the racially charged politics of key swing state Florida. “Trumpism”, observes Cooke, “is driven by racism. It cements it.” Cooke laments that “mass shooting in America” is a phrase that now has the same “callous familiarity” as “bombing in Baghdad”. We are on the scene in the aftermath of the mass shooting at an Annapolis newspaper office, the 24th mass shooting of the year. It was June. Cooke ventures into a suburban shooting range (as mundane as a bowling alley) to experience how a popular assault weapon is so easy-to-use. Tired of Winning is a sobering account of how “the greatest country of all” is now teetering on a precipice. ●

hile many of us may know of nasi goreng or fried rice, it’s safe to say not many have heard of nasi ulam, which translates to "herb rice" in English. This dish is traditional to Malay and Peranakan cuisine. Peranakan, which is my heritage, means straits-born Chinese that immigrated to the straits of Malaysia between the 15th and 17th centuries. Nasi ulam is usually served warm or at room temperature and the most common condiment to serve with the rice is sambal belacan, an aromatic chilli paste which can be purchased at most Asian grocers if you don’t have the time to make the recipe here. Nasi ulam is a very healthy, yet tasty dish, packed full of herbs and is very easy to put together. The main challenge will be finding all the right ingredients. If one or two are missing it will not alter the taste of the dish too much. The beauty about this is that it can easily be made into a vegetarian dish as well. ●

Worth the wait both international crowd-pleasers like Peroni and crafty locals like Richmond's Moon Dog. Johnny's cocktail list leans towards long, thirstquenching drinks that are quick to make. This is a wise choice, given that all drinks and food have to be ordered at the bar that gets packed several deep when the weather's balmy. The staff are cheerful and efficient, even under pressure, apparently happy to be working in the great outdoors. It adds to the good time vibe. There are three spritzes besides the tapped Aperol classic. The K&G is a beauty with Bergamot orange and grapefruit flavoured liqueurs mixing it up with grapefruit juice and prosecco. It's a tasty drink that makes you feel sophisticated drinking it. There are fruity drinks too, but it's more about infused booze than blenders. The banana daiquiri is, mercifully, about banana liqueur rather than fresh bananas while the Princess Peach uses a peach vermouth as its leaping off point. Johnny's food list tows a similar line to the drinks, offering a list of easy eating dishes. There are good pork and veal polpetti slathered in sugo, a more-than-decent cheeseburger, freshly shucked oysters, arrancini and prawn sandwiches. They're all down with the roof party theme. Johnny's has been worth the wait. It's a new outdoor clubhouse for fans of Carlton, both new and old. ●
Signature drink It’s hard to go past the Aperol Spritz on tap, a comforting blend of efficiency, style and quality, which pretty much sums up the ambitions of Johnny’s Green Room. PAIR IT WITH … Excellent prawn sandwich with spicy mayonnaise which is stuffed into fluffy white bread. ●

ohnny's Green Room defines the proverb “good things come to those who wait”. Nearly four years after Carlton landmark King & Godfree closed for renovation, the historic deli is finally up and running. Johnny's is the new rooftop addition, an expansive, stylish terrace bar with superb views across Carlton and towards the city skyline. Its Roman roof party vibe – couches, umbrellas, trees in pots, awning-shaded central bar, excellent tunes – is just the sort of al fresco good time Carlton's been waiting (and waiting) for. The dial for drinking here is set to “easy”. This is best encapsulated by the fact that there's a more than decent Aperol Spritz on tap. There are also taps pouring red and white wine from Heathcote's Montevecchio, a rose from the MurrayDarling and a decent range of beer that includes

It’s part of Vinomofo’s Homeless Grapes Project that kicked off in Adelaide in 2015, expanded to Victoria last year and sees 100 per cent of the proceeds of a wine made specifically for the project go to a homeless charity, in this case St Mary’s House of Welcome. This chardonnay, made from grapes donated by De Bortoli, Rochford and Tarrawarra wineries, is elegant with a bit of melon thrown in. Buy some. Feel good. ●

Sources have told Screen Time that the Nine board and Nine chief executive Hugh Marks have wanted to tone the drama down, because it’s been seen as being too much – especially for the 7.30pm family timeslot. So in next year’s series, expect a fine line between drama and a little more emotional refinement. More than 10,000 people applied for this season of MAFS, and Nine expects the same next year. Schilling has defended the match-making process that has come under increased scrutiny. She says the three experts genuinely do their best, and it’s not all about making a TV show. “We do our own assessments behind the scenes and then we all come together with the producers, and it’s then a big collaborative decision,” she says. “It’s sometimes a 12-hour meeting – a big day. We discuss every possible iteration for the couples.” ●

Despite the heat, Schilling told Screen Time that after 20 years of working as a psychologist, her career in television is a wonderful reality. “I was talking to a girlfriend and saying I actually have to pinch myself because I am living the dream,” she says. “I have a performance and stage background and so for me all I ever wanted to do was blend my two passions, which are psychology and performing, and here I am doing it. “This is all I have ever wanted.” Based in Bali for most of the year, Schilling comes to Sydney to film Married At First Sight for up to three months. The show has become a social phenomenon for Channel 9, not only in the ratings, but also in terms of the power of water-cooler discussion. Vintage stores are dotted generously along the street, but despite the abundance, no store is stepping on the other’s toe. There’s American Vintage for the high-quality denim and band T-shirts, Hunter Gatherer for the eclectic and affordable mix, and Vintage Sole for a more refined and contemporary selection of vintage. If you want to try your hand at making your own clothes, The Fabric Store fills a warehouse-like space with a wide range of designer materials and unique fabrics. TRAVEL \ PORT FAIRY oats and Norfolk pines. These and the sense I was a long way from Melbourne are what I remembered most from previous visits to Port Fairy, a beautiful and historic seaside village in Victoria’s south-west. A recent return visit confirmed that the drive is still decent but the distance (nearly 300 kilometres) is comforting – you can't help but leave your city concerns behind after 3.5 hours in the car. Happily, the pines are still there (some more than 100 years old) and so are the boats. In fact, thanks to local historian Marten Syme, we are able to take a close look at the oldest surviving self-righting, self-draining lifeboat in the world. The Port Fairy was built in Williamstown in 1857 and lives in its own boathouse on the Moyne River, which is otherwise dotted with private yachts, fishing boats and runabouts. While generally a sleepy sort of place, in January the community gets together for the Moyneyana Festival, February is all about the Port Fairy Jazz Festival, and then in March the huge Port Fairy Folk Festival rolls into town.
EAT \ Port Fairy's wide, weather-exposed streets are
home to several unreconstructed pubs, a decent local pizzeria and bar (Coffin Sally) and great breakfast joint The Farmer's Wife. The village lost its two-hatted restaurant, Fen, in early 2018 but the owners have started pop-up dinners at local boutique hotel, Drift House. Meanwhile, one-hatted Gladioli has moved into Fen's old premises, with owner Matt Dempsey also operating Conlan's Wine Store, a two-minute walk away. The Merrijig Inn has a great little bar, too – and accommodation.
beetroot and horseradish and salads of apples, Shaw River buffalo cheese and candied walnuts. STAY \ Demand hots up over summer but there are plenty of holiday rentals and short stays for all budgets. We were lucky enough to stay at boutique hotel Drift House, which has six comfortable suites from $395 a night for two adults. ●
EXPLORE \ For a morning excursion we head to
Stroll to the lighthouse and capture the moment.
WALK \ Port Fairy oozes maritime history and was
established as a whaling station back in the early 19th century. No visit would be complete without a walk to the highly Instagrammable lighthouse, a pleasant 25-minute stroll from Martins Point Reserve. Along the way we spot several black wallabies and short-tailed shearwaters (aka mutton birds). Built in 1858 and now heritage-listed, the operational lighthouse is occasionally open to visitors in January and on long weekends.

Eating nine to five ‘S
am, I’m just too busy with work” is one of the most common excuses that I hear. It sounds harsh to call this an excuse, but you really can eat well at work if you are organised. Here are some simple tips to help stay on top of your nutrition from 9 to 5. MEAL PREP LIKE A PRO \ When it comes to sticking to healthy routine, a bit of a preparation goes a long way. A little tip I always give my working 28ers is to commit to an “hour of power” every Sunday night to meal prep lunches for the working week. When you know that you have a delicious homemade chicken curry waiting for you in the workplace fridge, you’re way less likely to be tempted by those toasties at the cafe around the corner. Trust me– both your waistline and your wallet will thank you for this one!
KEEP A HEALTHY SNACK STASH \ I get it – when
the dreaded 3pm looms, it’s tempting to hit up the vending machine to grab a Coke or Mars Bar to get you through the afternoon. But with a stocked-up, healthy snack drawer right next to your computer, you have got no excuse to grab something that isn’t good for you. Small packets of nuts, popcorn, grain crackers and bliss balls are all awesome satisfying snacks that will give you an energy boost for your afternoon. CUT YOUR COFFEE INTAKE \ I’ll never be the
trainer who says ‘you can’t eat this’ or ‘you can’t have that’ and, as a coffee lover myself, I’m not here to say you should cut out coffee completely. But I always remind my 28ers that their morning latte is considered a snack, so try to keep your coffee intake to one a day.

ALLEGRA SUGIANTO
HAWTHORN PARK – FINAL RELEASE
USE YOUR BREAKS WISELY \ On average,
DINE AWAY FROM YOUR DESK \ Mindlessly
Australians sit for almost 10 hours every day – this shocking statistic is one of the many reasons why you should get up from your desk and get moving. Take frequent breaks throughout the day to go for a quick walk around the block. Not only will this get your step count up for the day, it’ll give you a burst of energy if you’re starting to lose focus. I understand this one is more about movement than food, but we tend to be such all-or-nothing people. When we move, we make better food decisions – plain and simple.
shoving your lunch down in front of the computer is tempting (especially when you’re busy), but it can easily lead to over-eating. When you eat without paying attention to the taste, smell and texture of your food, it becomes hard for your mind to register what you have eaten and can mean that soon after you’re craving more. Take your lunch outside, get some fresh air and try to enjoy each mouthful away from distractions.
GET YOUR TEAM ON BOARD \ When you’re trying to commit to a healthy routine, there’s no denying the strength in numbers. Recruit a buddy or a few members of your team to commit to a healthy routine with you. This way you can be loud and proud about your healthy intentions. Keeping each other accountable will also make sticking to your guns that much easier, and together you can strongly say “no thanks” to the biscuit tin.
A selection of luxury parkside apartments, Hawthorn Park is the future of Hawthorn. Set on over 2000m² of residential parkland designed by Jack Merlo to enhance residents’ physical and mental wellbeing. Amenities include a wellness centre, gym, yoga studio, massage rooms, garden lounges entertaining areas and Melbourne’s only Skypool.
SIP SMART \ Staying hydrated is one thing I can’t
stress enough when it comes to staying healthy at work. So often, those hunger pangs you experience when you’re sitting at your desk is your body reminding you of one thing – you are simply thirsty. My advice is to grab yourself a water bottle to keep on your desk at all times as a constant reminder to drink a little more. Herbal teas are also great ways to ensure you keep up the H2O. ● ● 28bysamwood.com

Don’t tell the BBC location scouts, but this house is one Jane Austen might have fancied for her heroines. Double-hung sash windows give it a Regency air and the Paul Bangay-designed garden adds a dash of Versailles. It certainly turned out well for Ken Davies, co-director of developers Davies Henderson, who built the house in 2002-03. For his family home, Davies chose the highest point in a street walkable to Toorak Village and the Yarra yet almost impossible for traffic to find. There’s a dazzling view of the city skyline from the roof deck. Looking smart in red brick and Mount Gambier stone, the house rises above an enormous basement garage ideal for car collectors. Formal and casual living and dining, a lounge and a study offer attractive options for entertaining and quiet times. Both dining areas open to a courtyard garden with a fullytiled lap pool. “Builder’s own home” tends to be code for the best of everything, so there are French-style oak parquetry, marble fireplaces and sumptuous bathrooms. After 17 years and two owners, the interior is still in mint condition. The dark-blue front door leads to a parquet central hall. Turn left to the fitted study and right to the carpeted lounge, which has an open fireplace. Hosts planning a corporate do will admire the living and dining room, which has a fireplace and french doors to the ficus-hedged courtyard. The parquet meals and family area is just as elegant and would suit big birthday banquets. Four pairs of french doors

There’s something extra fancy about a double-fronted Victorian home with a landscaped garden path and imposing front stairway.
