Melbourne’s own Chris Pang, rising movie star, is in illustrious company, and not just for the actors he shines alongside. He’s a member of that surprising group of Hollywood elite who started their working life as a salesperson. Fun fact: George Clooney flogged insurance, Jeff Goldblum hit the phones to push stationery and for Chris Pratt, it was coupons he had to hawk to make a living. Pang, who studied at Monash University, was a door-to-door phone salesman. From those humble beginnings, Pang has Hollywood at his feet, and is our cover feature interview this week. ●

FIRST PERSON

““I am Alejandro Espino Aldana ” … and I’m a mariachi musician In the year 2000, I was living in my hometown of

Tijuana, Mexico and I met an Australian woman. We got married, had a child and went on tour in the US, performing a “musical journey through Latin America”. In one year we played 400 schools, and then that was it, we didn’t want to do any more. We came back to Tijuana and set up a music school. In 2006, we decided to move to Australia because there was a lot of fear in my (now) ex-wife about being kidnapped. We went to the immigration building in Melbourne for the visa interview, and the lady said to me: “OK, you’re going to be granted your permanent visa, just go out and get a job in the meantime”. I didn’t want to work in Bunnings or IGA, or anything like that. So I went to the Collingwood Children’s Farm and started busking. That first day I got about $300 in gold coins, and a guy from Abbotsford Convent came to me and said: “You wanna come and play here every Saturday and Sunday?” Another day I was busking and the women who used to run the office at the Prahran Market saw me there and put her card in my guitar case. I started performing for kids at the market in 2008 and I haven’t stopped since. I can sing La Bamba, and I can sing classical Mexican tunes, but for the adults I also play Funky Town, Foxy Lady, Thunderstruck, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Smoke on the Water Water, Black Sabbath and a little bit of Led Zeppelin. I’m probably the only Mexican that’s playing music here in Victoria professionally. There are some other mariachis but they’re from El Salvador and they’ve got Chinese violins. It’s a fun job. I meet a lot of other people and I go to different places every week, and I get to help my son and daughter economically by sending money to Mexico – not as much as I want to but I do my best. Sometimes people see me and they go “flamingo, flamingo!” What the hell, a flamingo is a bird; you’re trying to say “flamenco” right? Flamenco is not even Mexican, it’s Spanish! I think I’ll always be a mariachi. I’ve created my own thing, suited to Australia. I’m pretty proud of what I’m doing, and always trying to get better. ●

COVER STORY Actor Chris Pang’s career sounds like a Hollywood

plot, but this is the true tale of a Monash student who became a star.

Crazy success

E

ver since Australian actor Chris Pang played Colin Khoo in the Hollywood blockbuster Crazy Rich Asians, his acting career has hit the proverbial big time. Just how this Melbourne-born and former mobile phone door-to-door salesman quit his casual job to move to Los Angeles in 2013 is the stuff Hollywood dreams are made of, but Pang says there’s more to his success than meets the eye. At 34, Pang is at the top of his game and knows it. These days he can knock back scripts that don’t appeal and meet with Hollywood directors before castings are even announced; a good position to be in as a rising star. When he takes this call, he’s running a little behind schedule due to a photo shoot for his first suit campaign (he won’t say which brand) at the Joshua Tree National Park in southern California. He’s also the face of Sheridan, and appears in the brand’s Tonight Makes Tomorrow campaign. “When the opportunity came up to represent a true Australian brand like Sheridan, I couldn’t say no,” he says. “My mum was the first in the family to get excited about it. She told me their luxurious sheets are the highest quality and was gifted a set for their wedding present.” On fine bed linen, Pang says when he first moved to LA he knew nothing of the kind – couch surfing his way around Sunset with other Aussie wannabe actors. “Since filming Crazy Rich Asians my career has gone up a whole new level from where I was once standing,” he says. “People started messaging me congratulations via social media for my part in the movie, for helping break down barriers for other Asian-Australians. “It had an inter-generational appeal factor, with many parents telling me they are glad their children have a movie like this to call their own.” It was his award-winning part in the Australian film Tomorrow, When The War Began (based on the

popular novel by John Marsden) in 2010 that catapulted him to the top of the local film industry. “I quickly got to know everybody in the industry after that film, and it pushed me to head to the States and look for more opportunities,” Pang says. “You land in LA wide-eyed and full of hope and you’re just like every other actor looking for work. “The biggest win for me after Crazy Rich Asians is I have options and don’t have to sacrifice my integrity to get in the front door. “I’m that slightly bit higher up and it’s a nice feeling.” Pang was raised by his martial art instructor parents Barry and Anne Pang, who run a kung fu school, and spent most of his childhood in Kew. He went on to study multimedia at Monash University before deciding he didn’t want to work in design. “I always had an interest in art and drawing and produced my first comic in year 12,” he recalls proudly. “But, after studying at Monash University, I found the industry very limiting.

“As a freelance designer you work for someone else, and all you end up doing is working within their brief and not being as creative as you’d like to be. “You’re hired as a designer but everyone has an opinion.” It was while selling phones to raise money to buy a car that the epiphany occurred. “I found myself door-knocking at a casting agency and they actually got me onto their books instead,” he says of his career break. Pang, who has now just finished working on directing his first film – it’s in post-production – says he is grateful he followed his gut instinct to LA. “I think, at the end of the day, you have to have a love for the art of filmmaking,” he says. “You can’t just turn up in LA and hope to be famous. “My passion for film along with a strong support system is what got me to where I am today.” Pang doesn’t plan on remaining in LA forever, and hints Melbourne is where he wants to return sooner rather than later. “When I get to a position where I can continue to work in LA but be based in Melbourne would be my absolute ideal,” he says. Pang is proud he hasn’t lost his accent while in the US. “I have had to neutralise my accent though, just so people can understand me,” he jokes. Pang will also star in the new Charlie’s Angels reboot, due for a November cinema release, although his character is still under wraps. “The first Charlie’s Angels really resonated with me as a kid,” he says. “I remember the three women as total badasses and loved that one was Asian actress Lucy Liu. “That made it all the more relatable to me. “What we do with the 2019 version is a modern take on that – it’s all female empowerment. “I get to do everything from action to comedy, and with such talented people from Kirsten Stewart to Naomi Scott and director Elizabeth Banks. It was so much fun.” ●

MUSIC Everybody get ready – Vanessa Amorosi is releasing new music. Wo r d s

R AC H E L L E U N R E I C H

I

t’s hard to recognise 35-year-old Vanessa Amorosi from the bouncy teenager who sang pop anthem Absolutely Everybody at the Sydney Olympics. Not that she looks much older; maybe it’s that she lives in Los Angeles, where everybody chooses hiking and juicing over ageing. But much has changed since she belted out her ARIA-winning hits such as Shine and The Power Power. For starters she has a husband (with whom she owns an Los Angeles gym) and son, now three. And she’s got an eye on the charts again with her new single, Heavy Lies the Head. Her last single This Is Who I Am debuted at No.1 in Australia 10 years ago. For Amorosi, it’s not exactly a comeback, since she’s been furiously busy in LA as a song writer and artist since she left Melbourne. That has included working with musician, songwriter and record producer Dave Stewart, of the Eurythmics fame, and establishing herself in the LA gospel music scene, which took six years of earning her stripes. “I couldn’t go in there and say, ‘Oh, I sang pop songs, I know everything about gospel music’,” she says. The latest album is also a chance to take control, and not cater to the demands made of her when she was younger. “With this new record, I haven’t gone back and rewritten anything, [which happened] with all my previous songs. Shine was [written as] Die, but when I played that to Mark Holden, he said, ‘Don’t you think that’s a bit heavy?’ As a kid it was a truth – everyone you see, everyone you know is going to die. But at the end, you can still hear – ‘Don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t you do it!’ ” Becoming famous in an era where “you had to kind of conform yourself in order to be desirable as a product”, she’s now happy to embrace all those strange, eccentric sides of herself. In her current songs: “I just speak the truth and hopefully it makes sense, and it's relatable.” Her life in Los Angeles – where she lives with husband Rod and son Killian – isn’t so dissimilar to how she once lived in Emerald, Victoria. “I live near Santa Monica Reserve and have a big property, and I’ve got my horses and my dogs and my goats, and you would swear coming to my place that you’re coming to Australia,” Amorosi says. And beyond the grounds, a life that she never imagined herself living.

“I never thought I would be the person getting married, I never thought I would be a mother.”

Taking control “I never thought I would be the person getting married, I never thought I would be a mother. And, it’s been a real gift to have that,” she says. “[Parenthood] is a bizarre adventure but it’s such a great journey. I never would have thought it would be in me, but I’m pretty relaxed as a parent. “My little boy’s like a fireball. I go, ‘Look at how gentle and calm daddy is’, but he’s this little spitball, it’s great.” Amorosi says her martial arts expert husband is the complete opposite of her. “He’s about structure and fitness. I think there’s only room for one arty person in the household

before everybody’s driven crazy. He’s tone deaf, but it doesn’t stop him. We go to karaoke, and he won’t get off the microphone. “And, it’s not like he just sings it – he dances it. He’ll do something like NSYNC or Justin Bieber – completely out of time. And then I come on and sing something dark and weird and obscure!” ● TOUR 2019 \ Amorosi plays in Melbourne on April 18 at Crown with Jon Stevens, with more Victorian concerts on May 16, 17 and 18.

A cheesy twist on tradition

W

ith Easter just around the corner, I thought about creating something different from traditional hot cross buns. These treats bring back a lot of childhood memories. Traditionally eaten over Easter and on Good Friday, the bun represents the end of Lent or fasting period, and the crosses represent the crucifixion of Christ. Whatever your beliefs, it’s safe to say that hot cross buns are now eaten by people of many religions and races, and are a crowd favourite. The smell of freshly baked hot cross buns is very nostalgic, and they are best eaten straight out of the oven. The only downside about hot cross buns are that they are sold only over the Easter period, so for those of you who love hot cross buns as much as I do, you can now make them just as easily at home with this recipe – no matter the time of year. ●

Instagram: @diana.chan.au

Triple cheese hot cross buns Ingredients (makes 12 buns) 700g high protein or bread flour 21g dried yeast 2 teaspoons salt 500ml warm whole milk 50g aged cheddar, grated 50g manchego cheese, grated 50g Monterey jack cheese, grated 5 tbsp grated parmesan For the crosses 6 tablespoons high protein or bread flour 6 tablespoons water 5g parmesan cheese, grated

Mix the flour, yeast and salt in a large mixing bowl. Make a well in the centre and pour in the milk. Mix with a wooden spoon, then using your hands, to form a soft dough. Knead for 10 mins, then put into a clean bowl. Lightly cover with oiled cling film and leave somewhere warm until doubled in size. This should take approximately 30 mins. Tip the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead in the cheeses. Dust a large, flat baking sheet with flour. Shape the dough into 12 round buns and arrange on the sheet with a 2-3 cm gap between each. Cover with another sheet of lightly oiled cling film and leave to prove until nearly doubled in size. Heat oven to 180C fan. In a mixing bowl, add in the 6 tbsp flour, 6 tbsp water and the 5g of parmesan cheese to make the crosses. Pour mixture into a disposable piping bag and pipe a line along each row of buns, then repeat in the other direction to make crosses. Bake for 20-25 mins until golden. ●

A shot at greatness

GIN MASTER ANDREW MARKS

t makes sense that Andrew Marks would take a winemaker’s approach to distilling gin. He’s head wine maker at his family’s Gembrook Hill Winery in the Yarra Valley and has been making wine under his own label, The Wanderer, for many years. So in 2012, when contemplating his first batch of gin under the Melbourne Gin Company label, he turned to his winemaking skills. “I taught myself to make gin and so I distilled every botanical in the gin individually, taking a winemaking approach,” he says, referring to the 10-plus botanicals that flavour his original dry gin, among them lemon myrtle, sandalwood and macadamia. “After I understood the distilling process better, I decided to try a different approach and to add another gin to the range.” Enter the MGC Single Shot gin, recently released

to acclaim and international medals. It also saw Marks recognised as a Gin Master at the 2018 Gin Master Awards in London. Single Shot refers to the process where the botanicals in the gin are distilled simultaneously. Marks wanted a juniper-forward gin without chill filtering to retain more of the oils from the botanicals. This means that the spirit may “louche” (go faintly cloudy) when chilled, such as in a martini. Marks had martinis in mind when he made the gin but he was also adamant that Single Shot would be excellent in a gin and tonic. “There’s never been a more exciting time to be a gin and tonic drinker,” Marks says. “There are so many great local gins on the market and now there’s a huge number of tonics and some of the best of those are also made locally.”

Local soft drink maker Capi has a couple of tonics available, Dry and Native, both noticeably less sweet than some of their bigger and more recognisable counterparts. Marks suggests the Dry with the original MGC Dry Gin, with a rosemary and grapefruit garnish. The Native Tonic and Single Shot are good with orange and thyme. Marks is excited that MGC is being poured at the bar at the Princess Theatre, during the run of Harry

Potter and the Cursed Child. Marks is a Potter fan and that fact that his gin is part of the Jinx & Tonic (MCG Dry, Aperol, rosemary syrup, orange bitters and tonic) seems something of a career highlight. “The awards and the reaction to the new gin have made me feel like I’m on the right track,” Marks says. “I don’t do flavour by committee and make the gin to satisfy myself so it’s gratifying that people seem to be enjoying it too.” ●

How to get runs on the board

W

e all know someone who loves running. They love what I would describe as a “good pain” feeling and challenging themselves to run further and faster every time. But I know that for many people, running can seem hard and intimidating, and the mere thought of a lap of the block makes their palms sweaty. It’s all about pushing through that mental barrier. Persisting through the initial “I hate this” moments can get you to a place of enjoyment where you find the run really rewarding. Here are my top tips to help you pound the pavement and like it.

TO START \ Running takes patience and perseverance. Some people are born to run but most people need to gradually build in fitness and distance. For anyone starting their running

journey, I always recommend starting off slow with no distance in mind. This will give your body time to adapt and recover afterwards, and slowly strengthens your muscles. Slow and steady might not win the race but it will prevent injuries and is the ideal way to start. MAKE A KILLER PLAYLIST \ When I’m really not

feeling it, I spend 10 minutes making a playlist of some of my favourite songs that I know really pump me up. So, if you really hate running then turn dread into excitement by creating a brilliant running playlist with epic, upbeat songs. GET A RUNNING BUDDY \ Whether it’s your mum,

sister, best mate or your dog, there’s nothing quite like having a companion to motivate you. It also helps having someone to keep you accountable.

GO EXPLORING \ There are two main things I tell my clients to focus on when running. Firstly, your breathing. It gives you a great sense of body awareness and rhythm. Secondly, take in everything around you. We are so often glued to our screens that your run might be one of the few moments in your day where you are able to just be in the moment. STRETCH, STRETCH, STRETCH \ Muscle pain

ISTOCK

after your first ever run is all too common. This is why I stress the importance of warming up before each run and dynamic stretches that target your calves, hammies, hip flexors and quads post-run. I know so many people, including thousands of 28ers, who have become running converts despite believing it would never happen. Just remember, the only way you can become a runner and get to this point is if you get out there and do it. ● ● 28bysamwood.com

Designed by Interlandi Montesso about 12 years ago, the house was recently renovated to make the main bedroom suite even more spectacular. With sitting, living and family-dining rooms and a highhedged garden with pool and terrace, it will appeal to a school-aged family with corporate entertaining – and travel – in mind. (There’s famously only one set of traffic lights between Myoora Road and the airport.) A huge black gate guards the bluestone-paved courtyard. The sitting room, at the front, has full-length, shutter-clad windows north, and west and would suit an office. The central living room, with its six-metre ceiling, has a gas log fireplace and mirror wall. Lustrous white floor tiles continue into the open-plan family, meals and kitchen area, where sliding doors lead to the covered terrace and garden. The mesh-front open fireplace adds a rugged element. A gigantic crystal chandelier lights the dining area, which has a stainless steel sideboard amid dark timber cabinetry. Gourmands will enjoy the Calacatta marble kitchen, replete with Miele gas cooktop, oven, dishwasher and microwave. Walk through the pantry to the powder room,
