Melbourne model Shanina Shaik’s blinding beauty belies her tough interior. Bullied at school for not looking like what she thought was the definition of a typical Aussie girl, she’s had the last laugh on her tormentors. She’s stalked the runway for Victoria’s Secret (a major coup) and signed on as the face of Chadstone’s autumn/winter 2019 campaign. On the flip side, she has been quick to spot tokenism in her industry, telling journalist Jane Rocca in our cover feature that diversity on the runway and in magazines, in the past, has been lip service. Not so any more, and she’s responded by building her brand. ●

FIRST PERSON
““I am Carolyn Laffan ” … and I’m the senior curator at the Australian Music Vault When I was in year 9 I came down from the country and did a student placement at the National Gallery for two weeks, and it very much solidified for me that I wanted to work in museums. I did art history at university, but majored in archeology – the object as the thing that tells the story was always really interesting to me. Then, I got to do a work placement as part of a museum studies course with the Performing Arts Collection at Arts Centre Melbourne. I’ve now been working with the Collection on and off since 1990, so I’m part of the furniture. The Arts Centre has been collecting since the late ’70s in circus, music, opera, theatre and dance, but popular music has always been a real strength for us. When the government was looking for an agency to deal with the Australian Music Vault, I think we were a pretty obvious choice because we’d been working in that area for such a long time already. Picking a favourite object in the AMV is always hard, but Chrissy Amphlett’s microphone stand has real emotion resonance for me. I remember when I first saw her with it on Countdown. We work closely with the performers to know what the story is from the coal face, and then we work backwards. The artists are often very surprised by what we find interesting, like, “Why would you be interested in that petrol receipt?” But when you start talking about how many hours they’ve spent in a bus or in a car travelling from gig to gig, it makes them start thinking of other things. We start in one place but end up somewhere very different. We work really hard preparing all the objects. I don’t think people understand how much work goes into preparing an object to go on display, from condition checking to make sure that it’s stable and can be under lights, to how we’re going to display it. The most challenging thing about my job is that you never have enough space time-wise or physically to tell all the fantastic stories that we’re privileged to hear. Having to distil things down, when you know that the richness is really in the complexity, is tricky. There’s a bit of killing your darlings along the way. ● ● australianmusicvault.com.au

Designer Bettina Liano, who gave cult status to humble denim, is back making fashion that fits women’s diversity.

obody makes a career comeback quite like Bettina Liano – the original denim queen from Melbourne who took on the world by turning an ordinary wardrobe staple into a cult status by the ’90s. Now she’s back with a new brand, a reinvigorated spirit and a passion that runs as deep as her Italian roots. While her namesake brand doesn’t belong to her any more (it is now owned by the Apparel Group after she went into liquidation in 2012), Liano says her renaissance line titled BYBL is for those seeking new denim to worship. “I call it a sixth sense,” says Liano of her knack of predicting denim trends, in her heydey, before they became one. “I was good at picking at what people wanted back then, and I think I still do and that’s what makes me stand out as a designer.” Celebrities like Elle Macpherson and Madonna wore her jeans – long before social media was all that was needed for an Instagram-ready launch, with a sassy hashtag to woo the buyers. Liano was also stocked at Barneys in the US, paving the way for many other brands after her – and the rest is double-denim fashion history. “When I look at denim today it’s everything I have covered in the past 30 years,” Liano says. “And when I started, nobody took denim and gave it a tailored edge like I did. Now it’s everywhere.” She says her own inspiration comes from pop culture, politics and European catwalks. “I am motivated by the times, what I see people wearing, editorial fashion shoots in magazines, pop culture and a little bit of Bettina prediction thrown in the mix,” Liano says. The new range is manufactured in Australia using premium European denim. She has introduced 20 new styles and plans to move into denim skirts, jackets and T-shirts in the near future. There’s also a bricks and mortar store which has opened on South Yarra’s Chapel Street. Anybody who has ever owned a pair of Liano jeans knows they’re built to last – even those sprayed on tight ones dubbed the Ace, that sold by the truckload in the ’90s, are still fetching big bucks on secondhand websites. “There’s nothing more sustainable than denim,” she says. “You can wear it for years on end and they won’t date. Most other fashion items you replace over and again, but when you invest in a pair of good denim jeans you won’t be disappointed.” There’s no denying Liano carries the scars of her brand’s fall, but rather than nitpick through the past she’s willing to look to the future with a renewed vision that’s on her terms.

An icon returns for a denim revolution and Kim Kardashian to wear her denim, but now Liano is dressing different shapes and sizes – her range goes up to a size 16. “This is the era of individualism,” Liano says. “When I was a 20-year-old buying jeans you had to be skinny to fit in them or you simply missed out on what was in fashion. “Now, you don’t get upset about it because you don’t need to – there’s a denim option for everyone. The market has responded to it and the demand is there.” Born and raised in Brighton, Liano is one of four children who grew up in Melbourne – including her sister Gina Liano, a lawyer who found fame on The

Real Housewives of Melbourne, and designer Teresa Liano of the now-defunct fashion line TL Wood. Their father was a car salesman who owned a car yard in Coburg while their mother ran her own fashion boutique Sempre L’Unico in Toorak Village. Liano recalls her mother turning up at school with a new car every few days. “One day it was a Charger, the next a Statesman. Mum was always beautifully dressed; she certainly has great style. It felt like the scene out of a movie. And occasionally Mum was late and everybody could hear her coming,” Liano smiles. Liano counts David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac and Roxy Music as her heroes and, once she was old enough to see bands, would frequent the Crystal Ballroom to see Nick Cave’s Birthday Party perform. “In those days we’d go out every night except Saturday,” she laughs. “My sister Teresa was like disco royalty. She ran a club called Razor with Gavin Brown. “I would dress Kate Ceberano and Scott Carne from Kids in the Kitchen. We were around that scene. It was lots of fun.” The mother of two with former husband and fellow fashion designer Roy Christou, who was at the helm of ‘90s menswear label Roy, says she is proud of her daughters. Hali lives in New York and is the editor of Office Magazine, and Olympia is a model who just walked for Vivienne Westwood during London Fashion Week earlier this year. “They’re savvy girls and working hard. They’re inspiring to me,” Liano says. If history has a chance of repeating itself, Liano is making sure that when it comes to denim and trends, it’s on her terms. “Politically it’s a return to the ’70s right now,” she says. “It’s a revolutionary time again. The ’60s were the start of it, but in the ’70s people went wild. I remember it. “The hippies were concerned about the environment and sustainability, it’s when we started hearing about diversity, equal rights between men and women and in turn it created an incredible freedom in dressing. “I am channelling that spirit.” ●

“It’s a new era for me now but there’s definitely still pain, of course,” she says. Liano relaunched BYBL during Melbourne Fashion Week with a runway show in March. She’s no stranger to the calendar event having participated every year since it began. “I love Melbourne Fashion Festival because it’s so ahead of its time and a win for the designers because consumers don’t wait three months after seeing something on the catwalk,” she says. “They can buy it immediately – that instantaneous connection is what we need right now in retail.” In her halcyon days she counted on Kylie Minogue

here are a few things that Victoria’s Secret model and Melbourne girl Shanina Shaik doesn’t want to talk about. One is the Fyre Festival, which she helped promote but has been deemed a no-go zone for journalists, ever since it went up in a flurry of influencer flames (see: Netflix documentary). She also seems reluctant to chat about her romantic life, and later it becomes clear why; last week, Shaik gave a public statement – via a rep – that she and her husband DJ Ruckus had decided to end their marriage after one year. It’s ironic, really, because the woman who’s a closed book on some topics chose to expose herself in a different way when she posted a photo of herself naked on Instagram back in March. It wasn’t your garden-variety Kardashianesque shot; there were no angel’s wings, no self-tanner and a healthy dose of outdoorsy-ness. It was, in fact, an ode to strong women for International Women’s Day, but this is the world of social media, so backlash ensued. The main gripe was that women shouldn’t have to take their clothes off to be strong. Rather than enter into cyber warfare, Shaik replied to her detractors politely and moved on. Shaik, who dropped in to Melbourne from Manhattan as the face of Chadstone’s autumn/ winter 19 campaign – wants to say one thing about that naked shot: “It was a really important image

for me. I was with the photographer Mariano Vivanco. I was on holidays. I hadn’t been training. I wasn’t working out. He said, ‘Let’s go take some beautiful pictures’. He made me feel so comfortable and raw. Usually I’m questioning, like, ‘I haven’t worked out. I don’t feel good.’ But I was too busy. “And I’m so proud of myself, because I just shouldn’t be so harsh on myself and judge myself too much. I should just really enjoy my body as it is and [enjoy] being a young woman. Capturing this beautiful image wasn’t [about being] sexual.” When the body self-doubt descends, one wonders if she sees herself the way the rest of the world does. Usually, when one interviews a celebrity, it goes something like this – you realise that the lead actor

WALKING the TALK is not as tall as you thought, or the model who appears in designer campaigns looks somewhat more regular in real life. Their magic isn’t as apparent in the flesh as it is when a camera turns their angles into that magic. This is not the case with Shaik, whose beauty is so blinding it is somewhat akin to looking directly into the sun. Perhaps some of the self-doubt was planted in her secondary school year. “My mum is Australian; my dad was born in Singapore,” she says. “I was bullied in high school because I didn’t look like the typical Australian. There’s this stereotype of Australians being blonde and Caucasian and I’m this mixed green-eyed girl. So it was very hard for me. It was really hard for me to understand that type of bullying, because I had an idea of bullying being a physical act that you see in movies. “It was pretty much a mental breakdown for me. I built up the courage to tell my mum, which was hard for me because it’s embarrassing. But I [eventually] learnt to make new friends. “And it kind of prepared me for the industry and world I live in.” That’s because the modelling industry didn’t

exactly welcome her with open arms. “At the beginning of my career, [people] weren’t very open to my look. I really had to push and work hard to book those jobs that I really wanted to book. It was like we just had a token dark girl or mixed [race] girl on the runway. And now we’re seeing it become so diverse, which is really nice.” At 17, Shaik moved to New York by herself; more than a decade on, and living in Hell’s Kitchen, it’s clear she’s adapted to her adopted city. Although she’d garnered some degree of fame in Australian with the 2008 reality TV show Make Me A Supermodel, it wasn’t until 2011 when her real break came in the US, walking in the Victoria’s Secret fashion show. She has since walked for Chanel, Oscar de la Renta and Tom Ford. Her next step? The big screen, and she has her third movie role with the upcoming movie Greed, with a cast that includes Steve Coogan, Isla Fisher and Stephen Fry. “It’s exciting. I’m just creating my own business, being my own boss and in charge of my own career. That’s my 10-year plan.” ● ● chadstone.com.au

The Veronicas are reborn in fresh music and a TV series. Wo r d s

ustralian pop star twins Jessica and Lisa Origliasso have spent the past 15 years making music as the Veronicas, but for the first time in their career the feel totally in control. They’ve recorded three studio albums since 2004, and come a long way since we first met them as 20-year-olds from Brisbane. Now, they’ve signed up for a reality TV documentary and series with MTV International (also acting as executive producers) titled Jess & Lisa: The Veronicas, and have a new album due for release this year; making it five years since their last. But for all the career highs and personal lows and the tabloid attention in between – there’s been enough headlines to fill a book – they’ve found a way to navigate the system without losing faith in it. Their first single Think of Me, for all its kitsch video clip glossiness, gets serious about topics of rebirth, the metaphorical death of some things and learning how to move forward. It may also relate to

Jessica’s split from actress Ruby Rose, but it’s more about learning to love oneself after the fall. “We have always been very opinionated, but we’re just a lot wiser after all these years in the business,” says Lisa, who married actor Logan Huffman six months ago and is still certifiably glowing despite him being in LA while she’s in Melbourne for a promo tour. “Every stigma you can imagine of what might happen to women in music has happened to us. It is interesting to look back on it, we pushed through and never let it impede on the music. We continue to go into the studio and create. They can never take that from us,” she says. Jessica adds: “We have always had a big sense of self too, but we really had to fight for it. It hasn’t been an easy ride.” Renowned American music executive Seymour Stein signed The Veronicas in the mid-2000s – the same man who inked deals for the Ramones, The Pretenders and Madonna.
“That was a huge win for us at the time,” Jessica says. “Not many acts can say he signed them.” But with that came artistic freedom issues and they signed with Sony Music for their third selftitled album in 2014. Their debut The Secret Life Of Of, which was adored for its punk sassiness and pop deflections, won them ARIA’s Best Pop Release in 2005 and scored a spot at No.2 on the ARIA charts at the time. Then came their 2007 sophomore Hook Me Up – its title track loaded with rock riffs and driven by a wave of electronic dance. This is where emo discovered the dance floor and let go of its inhibitions. By the time they wanted to work on their third studio album, the sisters felt a huge disconnection between themselves, the music and the vision their label had. “We now have a team in the music industry that is there to centre their voices around ours and not drown or gang up on us,” Lisa says. “We have learned to stand up for ourselves,” Jessica adds. “And it feels liberating.” According to the sisters, the new album, which was recorded between Sydney, LA and London, realigns their chakras and connects the dots back to the ’80s, with a salute to pop and urban as well. Where Lisa leans to blues and urban, Jessica still has a hankering for punk and rock – the twin set certainly cover the gamut of genres between them. Jessica found inspiration in the Riot Grrl movement, and at one point even wrote a song inspired by Babes in Toyland. “My favourite moment of music was the Riot Grrl era,” she says. “I felt I had finally found myself when I listened to that music. I was right into the punk scene and Bad Brains are still my number one.” In a recent shoot with fashion stylist Nicole Bonython-Hines, the Veronicas wear Dior, Gucci and Aussie labels like Ellery to reposition their fashion conviction. Best known for working as Kylie Minogue’s stylist for two years, Bonython-Hines gives The Veronicas a fashion makeover while still mindful of their rockembellished roots. In their new video clip for Think of Me (shot in New Zealand), they both wear J’Aton wedding gowns as they run through the forest – with the gowns priced at well over $30,000 each. “We’ve been collaborating with some up-andcoming Aussie artists on this album and recorded in home bedroom studios to high-end ones,” Lisa says. “Sonically it takes a different journey for us – there’s lots of cross genre going on. This new album reflects our life journey and is totally about where we are at now.” ● ● theveronicas.com

Homeward bound Singer Ali McGregor returns to Melbourne’s stage. The Hills and McGregor family plan to move back to Australia later in the year, but in the meantime the girls will miss seeing their mum on stage at the Arts Centre in Melbourne, as it’s the end of the school year in the UK. “We are going to make the move back here later in the year for the kids to go to school here,” McGregor says. “My husband will have to do all the commuting then.” McGregor is accustomed to travelling between continents for work, as Hills continues his TV and comedic work in Britain. “Most of my work has been here actually,” she says. “Last year I flew back six times for work, and this time is my third already if you including coming back for Christmas. McGregor has been based in the United Kingdom with her husband, comedian Adam Hills, and their two daughters, Maisie, 5, and Beatrice, 9, for a few years now. Hills has a huge profile in the UK thanks to his TV talk show The Last Leg. “I’ve always been a bit of a homing pigeon,” McGregor told Domain Review. “I’ve travelled a huge amount and lived overseas a lot but I always end up coming back to Melbourne. I’ve always known that Melbourne is absolutely my home.” McGregor, 45, is back in Melbourne to start rehearsals for the Victoria Opera’s eightperformance run of the classic Stephen Sondheim production A Little Night Music. She plays the role of actress Desiree Armfeldt, following in the footsteps of superstars Judi Dench and Catherine Zeta-Jones. While her daughters remain in school in London, the opportunity to play Desiree was too good to miss. “It’s such an iconic role and the cast is sublime,’’ McGregor says. “I’m slightly daunted but very excited to be in the show.”

“I actually find Australia is doing some of the most exciting innovative work at the moment so I’m more than happy to come back here at a moment’s notice.” McGregor, who grew up in Melbourne, started performing early in primary school. Ever since, she has loved all aspects of work on the stage and has encouraged her children to explore music at a young age. “I was lucky enough to go to a school with a really energetic music and drama program, and that is something I’m very passionate about now,” she says.

‘I think it’s a wonderful thing for kids in primary school to learn music, play in an orchestra, or put on a play. It has a huge impact on their social skills, and their literacy and numeracy skills.” Right now, McGregor is relishing the rehearsals for A Little Night Music. “It’s one of my favourite times of the whole process,” she says. “I think it’s so exciting to get to know a new cast. “By the end you’re like a family. Better latte than never Former Australian cricketer John Hastings dishes up a new bayside cafe.

ohn Hastings has swapped the new ball for smashed avo and flat whites. The former Australian cricketer, who retired suddenly last year, has begun a new innings with his Frankston South cafe Mr Frankie. The 33-year-old pulled up stumps upon the advice of specialists after coughing up blood while running in to bowl during cricket practice. Hastings, who earned baggy green No.340 for Australia, played Test, one-day and Twenty20 cricket for his country, enjoyed a successful domestic career with Victoria and captained the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League. He tells Domain Review he is enjoying the change in pace. “It’s been awesome, I’ve loved it. It’s such a different world, I’ve got so much respect for the
hospitality industry and chefs who are under so much pressure to get food out looking good,” he says. “I felt so out of depth when I got into the cafe so I can imagine it’s like people walking on to a cricket field for the first time and suddenly the ball’s coming towards them. “I was dishwasher for the first two weeks, or what I like to call ‘underwater ceramic detailing’, which is like patrolling the boundary for 100 overs.” Thankfully, Hastings is in good health and, while he’s hung up his whites, he still remains active and connected to the game through television and radio commentary roles. “It was seriously scary, it’s never nice,’’ he says. “But my health is great now, as long as I don’t bowl and have that pressure going through my body.

“I’ve been going to the gym, going for runs, lifting weights and haven’t had the recurrence of coughing up blood, so that’s a big positive. “It was a case of not being able to do what I loved any more. In the end, I was OK with it because cricket had been so great to me and I’d had so many experiences through the game, so it wasn’t an easy decision but it made it easier. Support from the Australian Cricketers Association has also helped his transition post-retirement. “It’s been a massive 12 months. From cricket ending suddenly to starting a new business and not knowing really what’s next has been pretty scary, but we’ve dealt with all the things in front of us and not looked too far ahead,’’ Hastings says. “It was a good thing to get really hands on with Mr Frankie because I forgot about cricket for a little bit but kept in touch with some commentary over the summer. “You have to try and be set-up for when you leave sport because you just don’t know when that’s going to be. It ends pretty suddenly, you pack your locker up, you’re out the door and that’s it.” Mr Frankie is a team effort between Hastings, his
wife Bri, her cousin Paula and her husband Tom Walker, a builder from Mount Eliza. “Tom and I’d always spoken about opening something down here,” Hastings says. “There’s been a massive change in the demographic over the past five years, a lot of families have moved down [including] eight couples I know from Elwood, Brunswick, Ascot Vale and Essendon who are used to walking somewhere really nice to sit outside, have some really good food and great coffee,’’ he says. The quartet got award-winning interior designer Alisia Harrison on board and landed Casey Norman, former head chef at Hotel Brighton and The Greville. With a background in hospitality, Bri is running Mr Frankie, Paula heads up social media and they hired three chefs and three baristas all originally from Frankston South. The Norman Avenue hot spot opened on May 6, has just been granted a liquor licence and will be serving wine, tapas and local Peninsula produce within the next two months. ● ● facebook.com/mrfrankiecafe

But it wasn’t until I was on tour in Switzerland in the early 2000s and recall being blown away by the difference between what beer tasted like there to what we had in Australia.” It was this curiosity that got

family and give the gin genre a rock’n’roll run for its money with a mighty fine label, too. The artwork, created by NYC-based, Melbourneborn artist Seldon Hunt, brings a cult-like following to the product. “The distillery weaves our histories together,” Zaydan says. “From our love of music to our cultural diversity I think we’re doing what few are.” Her Lebanese upbringing has inspired the use of Lebanese cucumber and rosemary, which also prevailed in her family cooking. Their gin has already wooed the judges, taking out gold at the Australian Distilled Spirits Awards earlier this year and best in class for their matured gin at the Australian Gin Awards – the highest category for gin on the night. “The popularity of gin has sustained our future in it,” Zaydan says. “But it also made sound financial reason to stick with gin to begin with and room to expand.” ●

Westwood thinking about his palate and tweaking flavours to suit his own. A stint at the Temple Brewing Company, followed by a gig at Starward, saw him craft his skills and eventually led to opening his own business in 2014. At Cedar Fox Distilling Co. Westwood makes gin using skills he learnt in beer and whiskymaking. Now he’s got his eye on rum and whisky. “Starting a distillery was inevitable,” says Zaydan, who works as a deputy associate to a judge at the Federal Circuit Court of Australia while helping to run the business and raise their son Benjamin. “Craig now gets to use his creative skills to create a premium product and that has really changed things for us.” The distillery has almost outgrown its Coburg headquarters, but Zaydan says it’s home for now. small groups of tourists,” he says. “It’s an iconic building along with The Imperial Hotel and the Hotel Windsor, and we are privileged to have such a beautiful theatre.” Spring Street is an esteemed Melbourne address, not only for its cultural and heritage values, but its very location, says Marriner. “It’s the gateway to the city, approaching from the north and from the north-east, and it’s a beautiful wide boulevard that overlooks Treasury Gardens in much the same way Park Avenue does to Central Park,” he says. “I think it’s a beautiful Melbourne street, arguably the most beautiful street in Melbourne.” Soon to join the fold is the Bates Smart architecturally designed 17 Spring St – a 33-storey apartment tower set to replace the 12-storey Mercure Hotel near the corner of Flinders Street. The luxury highrise by developer Cbus Property will house 73 apartments and in addition to a premium location on the historical street, each will have enviable frontage opposite Treasury Gardens. Buoyed by the success of its 43-level building at 35 Spring Street, Cbus Property aims to achieve yet another standout offering for the top-end of town, says Adrian Pozzo, Cbus Property chief executive officer. “17 Spring St is the next jewel in our crown, it’s

ith its grand 19th-century buildings, European-inspired eateries and high-end boutiques, Spring Street is the crowning glory of Melbourne’s CBD. Its prestigious architecture and connection to the “Paris end” of Collins Street gives this top-end address an illustrious reputation. Some of Melbourne’s earliest establishment buildings, all built between 1852 and 1888, live at Spring Street. Parliament House and the Old Treasury Building give the street a stately elegance. Add heritage hotels Windsor and Imperial, and the ornate majesty of Princess Theatre, and you have a “best of” list that’s incomparable to any other Melbourne street. Fine dining and even finer coffee rules at Spring Street, thanks to institutions such as The European and the Melbourne Supper Club. With a menu that boasts Italian pasta, Greek cheese and locally-sourced fresh fish, it’s no wonder The European has won Melbourne hearts. Bengt Baumgartner, general manager of The European and a family of nearby venues including the City Wine Shop and the Melbourne Supper Club, says the eateries of Spring Street attract a diverse array of people. “You have politicians, architects, people in the media and you’ve also got people who are creative, public servants, academics and that for me, is what makes it so interesting,” he says. “You have everything from the theatre, hotels, apartment buildings, high-end fashion and the florist that sits next to us at The European. I think it’s just the general feeling of the Paris end, in that sense that you have a really great culture.” Victorian architecture is at its finest on Spring Street and, with its mansard domes and elaborate iron cresting, the Princess Theatre remains an outstanding example of French Second Empire architecture. Jason Marriner, chief executive of theatre owner Marriner Group, says Princess Theatre is the grand dame of Spring Street and never fails to attract attention. “It must be the most photographed building in Melbourne because there’s always someone taking a photo, whether it be passersby or
the Paris end of Collins St and it will never lose that trademark,” he says. “We’re hoping buyers will love the gardens, the sports precinct, the theatres, the restaurants and also the accessibility to getting out of town – all you need to do is drive down Exhibition Street and you’re on the various freeways. “All of this makes it a second-to-none location.” 17 Spring St is being sold by selling agents Colliers International and construction is due for completion in mid-2022. ● KATE JONES

HOUSE OF THE WEEK OLINDA \ 7 SPENCER ROAD 6

Call your magnificent mountain property Quiddity, meaning “the whatness of things”, and everyone immediately wants to know: What things? To start, some good, earthy things – nearly 4.5 hectares, a pool and a yard to rival the Royal Botanic Gardens. A bespoke 38-square house and a self-contained cottage. Wombats, wallabies, echidnas and lyrebirds fossicking in the bushland by the creek. Fragrant air, big sky. For owner Rosemary Grieve, Quiddity was “all about having a home that embraced us and allowed us to be a tight family”. She and her husband, American architect Brook McWilliams, bought the former walnut farm in the early ’90s. Walnut trees now flank the driveway to a spacious, sustainable house that mixes Australian ease with inspiration from the couple’s former home in Connecticut. The land slopes down to the creek in drystone terraces full of what Grieve calls “rooms within a garden; there are multiple places to sit depending on where the sun is”. “But I think my favourite thing is the barn,” she says. “It’s like an Amish barn, raised in a day. I was going to make a pottery studio there, but perhaps the next owner can do that.” McWilliams designed the main house, which was built in 1995 and has open-plan living and dining plus a kitchen with a meals area and sunroom. Four double bedrooms, one down and three upstairs via a slinky steel staircase, offer neatly zoned privacy. The second floor has an attic retreat. Extensive insulation, under-floor heating and double-glazing provide passive climate control. Then there’s the warmth less tangible. Lovers of “shelfies” will adore the living room’s towering bookcases. Four pairs of mullioned french doors lead to verandahs and the scent of nature. The dining room opens into the kitchen, resplendent in timber (from an old pier) and Argentine granite with satin-finish cabinetry and handles forged by McWilliams. On the first floor, three double bedrooms share a countrystyle bathroom with a claw-foot tub. One bedroom has a balcony, retreat and walk-in wardrobe. In the garden, the cottage has living, dining, kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom, ideal for grandparents or B&B ALISON BARCLAY
guests. ●
