I’d venture to say that there isn’t an AFL player, even one whose body has been pummelled relentlessly season after season, who would rate themselves stronger than a young woman named Maddie Riewoldt. A member of the famous footy family, she died aged 26 from aplastic anaemia, and set in motion a gesture of courage and conviction from her family, who started Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision. The annual fundraising match between St Kilda and Richmond, endeavouring to find treatments and one day a cure for the rare blood disorder, is this weekend. Barrack hard for the cause. ●

FIRST PERSON

““I am Simon Foretti ” … and I design Melbourne-made fashion I always knew, even when I was a kid, that I had to do something creative for work. I always liked making stuff and doing a bit of art, but I didn’t have a specific role in mind. All I did know was that it couldn’t be boring. I wanted to do something that would keep me on my toes. I’ve been involved in the fashion industry for a long time now, but it started out with a bit of street art, designing and graphic-based work. From there, I started doing T-shirts and then just kept trying to expand the range. I got really involved with garment production and how it’s all put together and sewn. Before B.O.Y.D., I had a small label called Extinct and a shop for 12 years, but just prior to starting that I was wholesaling. I had around 30 accounts nationally, which gave me a little bit of confidence to get into retail. When I decided to open B.O.Y.D. last year, everyone told me I was mad and not to do it – even prominent retailers were telling me not to do it – but I love making clothes and I love talking to people and seeing the clothes on them. I’m not a big supporter of doing everything on the internet – it’s very impersonal. I love that we can customise things here – we can do alterations inhouse, because we’ve got a little workshop out the back. You can’t get that sort of personalised service buying online. B.O.Y.D. is a niche label where everything is made locally and done ethically. The aim is to keep supporting the local industry and the people I’ve now worked with for 20 years, while making a clean, minimal, premium product that’s more towards slow fashion than fast fashion. I like putting things in people’s wardrobes that they can rely on. I love when someone walks up to me, holding something up that they bought 10 to 15 years ago and they’re still wearing it. That’s fashion. B.O.Y.D. is an acronym for Beat Of Your Drum. The name comes from the fact that I’ve played music my whole life, including professionally for a number of years in a band. Basically, the past 20 years of my life have been making clothes and music, so with B.O.Y.D. I was trying to bring those two worlds into one. ●

COVER STORY

W

hen this year’s Maddie’s Match takes place on Sunday – AFL teams Richmond and St Kilda play each other to raise funds to combat Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes – Maddie Riewoldt’s mother Fiona Riewoldt will no doubt be remembering the young woman she says was “my best friend”. “She was very funny, very dry. She loved music – Kelly Clarkson and Taylor Swift. She was feisty, she was loyal; she was so many things,” Riewoldt says. “She was a strong, strong person and a mad sportsperson – she was like a walking football encyclopedia.” It’s no wonder: her brother Nick Riewoldt, whom she idolised, is a former Saints captain, while cousin Jack Riewoldt, a three-time Coleman Medallist, plays for the Tigers. This is the fourth Maddie’s Match since Maddie’s death from aplastic anaemia – whereby her body stopped producing enough new blood cells – in 2015. Riewoldt says that she’s overwhelmed by the support that teams and spectators have shown. Watching the crowd on the day – so many wearing Maddie’s favourite colour, purple, and using the hashtag #FightLikeMaddie – she says: “I get really touched. I have to stop and pinch myself sometimes, to see what we’ve achieved. [Losing a child] is a very lonely path and this has taken a lot of that loneliness out, because I never cease to marvel at the amount of people who have come on board.”

Fiona Riewoldt, left, and AFL journalist Sam Lane, right, are fulfilling Maddie’s promise. KARON PHOTOGRAPHY

Maddie Riewoldt fought hard in her battle with a rare blood disorder, and her passionate AFL family fights on to raise funds to find a cure.

Goal in sight

Wo r d s

After Maddie was diagnosed with the disease at the age of 21 and life began to revolve around blood transfusions and medication, Riewoldt did everything with her daughter. But the illness Maddie faced proved to be unrelenting and cruel, chipping away at her body’s resources even though she’d often look as beautiful as before. “It used to distress her when people

into action. “There have been moments as a mother when I’ve gone, ‘Why us? Why my daughter? Why did she have to suffer like that?’ I could wallow, but that doesn’t do anything, it doesn’t change anything.” For her, it’s about moving forward with both the memories of Maddie and her loss as constant companions. “People who say it’s time to ‘move on’ – that’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. You don’t wish it on

“I’ve always known that football has the power to speak about things that are so much bigger than sport; that is one of the great powers of the code,” Lane says. “In this case, what we’ve seen through essentially one family’s experience, is something really important that’s able to be discussed, explored and shared, and is awareness and fund raising along the way. Riewoldt is one of the most

approves. Maddie’s life on earth might have ended, but the connection between the pair remains. Riewoldt tells a story of how Maddie once urged her to listen to a remix song she thought her mother would know, hilariously mispronouncing Que Sera Sera as “Q Sara Sara”. After Maddie’s death, Riewoldt and her husband travelled to a tiny town in Germany and visited a musical instrument museum.

“The fact that her name is being said so many times, every day, by people who didn’t even meet her, is a wonderful testament to her and how hard she fought.” FIONA RIEWOLDT

would look at her and say, ‘You’re not sick – you don’t look sick’,” Riewoldt says. “She’d say, ‘People don’t realise I need blood to live’.” One day, in hospital, “we sat there when things were pretty grim, even though we still thought she’d come home. She said, ‘When I get out, even if I can’t work again, I want to help people understand what this is.’ She wanted to make a difference. And I promised her that. Now, I’m fulfilling that promise.” The result was Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision (MRV), a charity that aims to fund research into Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes that will lead to better treatments and, hopefully, a cure. Since 2015, it has raised more than $7 million, some of which has established the National Aplastic Anaemia Registry and the first-ever National Research Symposium in Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes. Riewoldt dismisses the idea that she’s unusual by turning her sorrow

your worst enemy, to lose a child. And it will never be any different. I have good days and really rotten days and you have to turn the rotten ones around.” For Dr Lucy Fox, Bone Marrow Failure Fellow at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, clinical hematologist, and recipient of an MRV doctoral degree scholarship, hearing from those within the Riewoldt family helps her remember the goal. “It brings the focus back to the patients and their families,” Dr Fox says. “It’s so important to remind the public of what some people go through, and also to inspire and encourage us as researchers to keep striving. We need the momentum, the energy and collaboration that comes from this conversation.” Someone who’s kept the conversation going is Channel 7 sports journalist Sam Lane, who has built a connection with MRV since it began.

famous names in modern-day footy … when the Riewoldt family and the wider movement ask, ‘Can you help?’ you say, ‘Absolutely’.” When Riewoldt and her husband Joe attend Maddie’s Match this weekend, along with Maddie’s siblings and two nephews, it will be another opportunity to do something they love to do: talk about Maddie. “She was larger than life, and she deserves to be talked about. I think sometimes people avoid mentioning her for fear of upsetting me, but I love to talk about Maddie,” Riewoldt says. “The fact that her name is being said so many times, every day, by people who didn’t even meet her, is a wonderful testament to her and how hard she fought. We’re just the storytellers; she’s the one who did all the hard work.” Riewoldt, who wears her daughter’s elephant ring around her neck every day, knows in her heart that Maddie

n 2002, Delta Goodrem became one of Australia’s biggest stars, seemingly overnight. She was living in Port Melbourne at the time with her mother Lea, working on Neighbours, on which she played schoolgirl Nina Tucker. She released her first single Born To Try that year while on the longrunning soap and it went straight to No.1 – and she hasn’t looked back. Her album Innocent Eyes followed early in 2003 and went on to be the biggest selling album in Australia that year. While it might have appeared to be instant stardom to Australians, for Goodrem, now 34, it was the culmination of years of hard work and a dream she had from a very young age. “It felt very organic, it didn’t feel overnight,” she says. “It just felt part of my life as I had gravitated to the arts at a very young age and had been performing and working on TV.” Growing up in the Sydney suburbs, Goodrem’s mother and father Denis were always very supportive of her ambitions. She could have been a champion skier and loved sport, but acting and music were a stronger calling. “I was always curious and adventurous,” Goodrem says. “I wanted to do it all, from dancing to acting to singing and piano classes at a young age.” Lea moved to Melbourne with

Delta when she was 17, the mother and daughter sharing an apartment on the beach in Port Melbourne as she chased her dream and won the part on Neighbours. “From a young age, my mum was a mentor and a guiding light,” Goodrem says. “She encouraged and supported me in all my passions from the very beginning. “My whole family was there for me and provided an incredible foundation that I am so grateful for.” She has fond memories of her time in Melbourne as she began her career. She grew to love the Royal Botanic Gardens and the city’s cafes. “I love Melbourne with all my

Delta Goodrem on mentoring and launching her career in Melbourne.

BRIGHT STAR

heart,” she says. “It truly is one of the world’s best cities.” Her whole family was there for her when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2003; at the time Innocent Eyes was the No.1 album in Australia and she was just 18. She pulled through that ordeal under the glare of the nation’s spotlight, and it was an experience that only made her stronger. Since 2003, Goodrem has released five albums, had nine No.2 singles, all through the one record company Sony BMG. Goodrem has been a mentor on Channel 9’s The Voice since the show

began in 2012. Now in its eighth season, the show has been a ratings hit every year, with Goodrem the only original mentor left. It’s a job she cherishes. “The Voice has really become my family over these eight years,” she says. “It has been a profound experience. It has been incredible to see how each year the show has grown and evolved.” While she has worked on The Voice with the likes of Seal, Benji and Joel Madden, Keith Urban, Jessie J, Kylie Minogue and Guy Sebastian, one fellow mentor has become a huge part of her life – American Kelly Rowland. Off-camera they have a genuine friendship. “Kelly and I are kindred spirits,” she says. “We bonded from many experiences we have shared. “It’s wonderful to have another strong and supportive female on the coaching panel and in my everyday life.” The advice Goodrem gives her charges on The Voice is the same wisdom she was privy to when starting out. “Some of the earliest advice that I received and live by every day is that if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well. If you’re going to do something, put your whole heart into it and do your very best.” Home for Goodrem for the past decade has been Los Angeles, where she has a tight-knit group of friends, many of them Australians working in the entertainment industry. Away from the spotlight she enjoys going to the gym, reading a good book, walks and eating well. “I think it’s important to take care of yourself and practise self-love by participating in activities that you’re passionate about and that bring you joy,” she says. However, the stage will never be far away. “There is nothing else in the world I would rather be doing and I come alive when I am on stage.” ● THE VOICE \ Channel 9, Sunday 7pm, Monday and Tuesday 7.30pm.

uring my visit to the city of Hoi An in Vietnam over Easter this year, I stumbled upon a lot of street food that I had never tried. Though I have tried banh xeo many times before in Australia, I sampled one of the best ones yet on a street stall tucked under a large palm tree along one of the main streets of Old Town Hoi An. Banh xeo is a savoury Vietnamese pancake – very similar to a crepe – made from rice flour, coconut and turmeric, which makes it gluten free. It was crispy on the outside and had a good amount of filling of prawns, thinly sliced pork belly, bean sprouts and lots of fresh Asian herbs. You can easily make it vegetarian by substituting fried tofu for the pork belly and prawns. Eating that banh xeo, sitting on small plastic chairs, watching the traffic go by as motorcyclists manoeuvre from every direction is organised chaos, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. ●

Banh xeo (Vietnamese gluten-free pancakes) Ingredients (Serves 4) 1 ∑ cups rice flour 2 tbsp cornflour 1 tsp turmeric powder Pinch of salt 400 ml coconut cream ∑ cup water 100g cooked pork belly, thinly sliced 12 cooked prawns, peeled 2 cups bean sprouts 3 carrots, peeled and julienned ∏ bunch spring onions, finely sliced 1 bunch Vietnamese mint 1 bunch coriander 1 lime Nuoc cham sauce ∏ cup warm water ∏ cup caster sugar ∏ cup fish sauce (use soy for vegetarian option) 1/3 cup lime juice 1 red chilli, finely diced

Method ■ In a large bowl, combine the two flours, turmeric, salt, coconut cream, and water and whisk until you get a smooth batter. Set aside for 20-30 minutes. ■ Heat a 20cm non-stick fry pan over medium heat. Add in 3 prawns and a few pieces of pork and fry for a couple of minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside. ■ Next, add 2 tbsp of oil and a ladle of batter to the pan, swirling to coat the base and slightly up sides of the pan. Cook with the lid on for 5 minutes or until crispy and golden on the base. Scatter with bean sprouts, carrot, spring onions and herbs. Add in the cooked prawns and pork. Fold to enclose like you would an omelette. Repeat with extra batter and ingredients. ■ For the nuoc cham sauce, combine all ingredients into a bowl, and mix well. ■ Serve the banh xeo with nuoc cham and chilli sauce (optional) and a squeeze of lime. ●

DARRIAN TRAYNOR

Cinemas have become a feast for the senses.

one are the days when all you could get at the movies when it came to food was a choctop or a packet of Twisties. Things are changing, as cinemagoers demand more than just a basic lolly counter as they settle in for a movie. Palace Cinemas in South Yarra has just launched the newly renovated Como Centre theatre, Palace Platinum. Part of the relaunch includes restaurant-quality food options, including menu items from the nearby restaurant The Meat & Wine Co on Toorak Road. There is also an extensive wine list. Szechuan calamari, haloumi and pumpkin salad, a pulled-pork toastie and an antipasto plate are just some of the dishes served up at the Palace Platinum at the Como.

Palace Cinemas chief executive Ben Zeccola said the company had put a lot of thought into the food and alcohol choices at the new cinema. “I think there has been a real transition in cinema,” he says. “I think in the ’70s and ’80s it was really aimed at children, and I think cinema has changed and there is a more sophisticated and more adult audience. “That means when people want to go out to the cinema they want to indulge, and that includes good food. “The whole sweet bar has become a little redundant.” The old choc-top is still on the menu at the Palace Platinum, but it comes in a different form. “We have a fantastic choc-top platter as a dessert, a cast of five different choc-tops. “They have been very popular.”

Menu highlights: The Sun Theatre has to be close to being Melbourne’s most beautiful cinema. There are a number of restaurants around the Yarraville court yard where the cinemas is located, but inside you cannot skip a traditional choc-top as the menu item of choice.

Menu highlights: If you didn’t have dinner before a movie at Chadstone’s impressive dining terrace (a favourite is Woodstock Pizzicheria), there is amazing food available in the cinemas itself. Hoyts Lux at Chadstone has a menu designed by celebrity chef Manu Feildel, and it’s yummy. Try the southern-style fried chicken or, for vegans, the chickpea slider is perfect.

Menu highlights: Like the Sun Theatre, the Rivoli is a stunning cinema. At the moment they have a chef’s gourmet popcorn range with rocky road, raspberry and white chocolate, salted caramel and Oreo-flavoured kernals. Hello, yes! The cheese platter is also very appropriate for the classy atmosphere that is the Rivoli cinema.

Menu highlights: Maybe it’s because of that famous scene in Grease, but the drive-in cinema experience refuses to die. Try the famous hot jam doughnuts at the cafe, which opens an hour before films start. CINEMA NOVA \ CARLTON

The third song sat on the back-burner. “We’re both had an amazingly similar musical taste,” Sclavunos says. “She liked Krautrock, a lot of crooners and ’60s stuff, our music taste was more aligned than one would have imagined.” The duets album was recorded at Electric Lady in New York, Retromedia in New Jersey and Red Bank Studio. “I hadn’t been back to Electric Lady since the ’70s when I made a liquor delivery from the store I worked at to a band called Led Zeppelin,” he smiles. Sclavunos made his first visit to Melbourne with Nick Cave to record Murder Ballads in 1996. “Making Murder Ballads was a unique recording experience,” recalls Sclavunos, who made his percussion debut with the outfit on this album. “Most of the album was improvised. hree years’ private school fees, worth close to $100,000, will be covered from 2019 for families moving to one of Overture’s 21 townhouses or four penthouses in Kew. At 2 Barenya Court, the luxury 25-residence project is in Melbourne’s private school heartland within five to 15 minutes’ walk of MLC, Xavier, Trinity Grammar, Carey Grammar and Ruyton. Nelson Alexander agent Cameron Ingram says payment of school fees will start from signing of unconditional contracts; giving families a head start before the project’s completion. “With many residences priced below Kew’s median house price of $1.98 million, it’s an ideal opportunity to break into this blue-chip suburb,” Ingram says. The deal is also available to grandparents or investors, to cover fees for children not living at the address; however it is the buyer’s responsibility to organise enrolments. The high-end properties, designed by acclaimed architect Bruce Henderson, are expected to be completed by early 2021. ● LIZ McLACHLAN

Beaven Avenue is like Escape To The Country without the remoteness or the mud. A two-minute walk from Tooronga station, this street – more of a wide lane – is the secret side of Malvern, a neighbourhood noted for its posh English style and folks and dogs who like a brisk ramble. Actually, there is a bit of mud – nearby Menzies Reserve is looking juicy and colourful in that wintry way. So is the garden of this new townhouse on the Hornsby Street corner. Designed by the Spaces Group, the twostorey, three-bedroom, family-sized house opens to a deck and lawn shaded by plane trees. Inside, the scent of freshcut oak brings a lovely synaesthesia to the view of hundreds of treetops, framed by full-length windows. Clad in ivory brick with a brise-soleil porch, the house is a modernist spark in a demure streetscape. Take the bluestone steps to the dark-red door. There’s a petite foyer, then the oak floor expands into a large open plan with distinct dining and living areas and a lift. The kitchen is right at the front with a splashback window looking north into what promises to be a sparkling stand of birch trees. Grey stone benchtops, an island and satinfinish cabinetry make a sleek backdrop to a suite of Miele appliances and an integrated Fisher & Paykel fridge. The spacious living area has a grey stone pillar with a gas log fireplace. Sliding doors lead to the deck and garden. A fully-tiled bathroom and a laundry with courtyard access complete the ground floor. On the first floor, via the lift or carpeted stairs, the retreat gets the cosy solar benefits of the northerly aspect.
