THE FIRST WATCH WORN ON THE MOON

On the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing, OMEGA is reflecting on the golden moments that defined that iconic day. While our own Speedmaster was strapped to the wrists of the astronauts, George Clooney was looking up towards the moon where his heroes were making history.

Nine newsreader Alicia Loxley is a product of Melbourne’s RMIT journalism course; one of many leading reporters to have nurtured their ambitions from the humble classrooms off La Trobe Street. She traded in the dream of being a physio on the professional tennis circuit for the demands of a newsroom, where deadlines apply as much pressure as Roger Federer across the net. After welcoming her third beautiful child, Loxley has returned to the studio and the thrill of live news following maternity leave. She shares her path from Melbourne to Perth and back again in this week’s cover feature. ●

FIRST PERSON

““I am JJohn Cornish ” … and I’m an RACV patrolman I used to have my own automotive workshop, but it wasn’t going that flash. It was during the recession we had to have and I started driving the yellow van as a part-time job just to keep some dollars coming in. I’ve been with RACV for 25 years this year. In the early days, you’d get out to cars and patch them up on the side of the road to get people safe and home. I’d amaze myself sometimes with the things I used to come up with. But it’s changed. With electronics now, it’s not like the old days where you could patch them up with a bit of fencing wire. Probably the most common call-outs we get would be flat batteries and wheel changes. Wheel changes are possibly the only job we’ve got now that’s growing. A lot of people don’t know how to do it, and when they try it can be dangerous. I’ve got out to cars and the jack’s been upside down, or in the wrong spot. It makes you shudder. The other day I had a girl who’d been driving down the freeway at 100 km/h and she had a blowout. She’d been towed off the freeway, so she was safe, but it was a bit scary to think what could have happened. People are funny. I had a job one night, it was freezing cold, in the middle of winter, on the top level of a car park. This bloke had this dirty old truck and I was convinced it was out of petrol, but the driver had other ideas. I tried everything, and I’m thinking, “Mate, you’re out of petrol”. Eventually, I went and got some more petrol and the truck started. He looked at me and said, “Well, what do you reckon it was?” You’ve got to be really careful because you don’t want to embarrass anybody. People locking their keys in their car get embarrassed, but that’s easy done these days. During school holidays, usually things drop off. But it gets busy on the Monday after school holidays, when everyone jumps into the second car, and it’s not working because it hasn’t been driven for two or three weeks. In this job, you’re sort of your own boss and you make your own decisions. You meet people and don’t have to take money off them – I like that. ●

I

f she’d had her way when she was a teenager, Nine’s Alicia Loxley would have been a travelling tennis professional and not one of Australia’s most accomplished TV presenters. Growing up in the Melbourne suburb of Macleod, Loxley, 37, didn’t cut it when it came to becoming a tennis player week in, week out, so she had her eye on another career. “I wasn’t quite good enough to become a professional tennis player, but I thought a great way of living out that dream of travelling the world was by becoming a physio,” she says. “But I hated chemistry, and that was the only prerequisite subject for physio, so I sort of thought this is not the right direction for me.” Loxley ended up studying the celebrated RMIT University journalism degree, based out of building six on Bowen Lane, right in the middle of Melbourne’s CBD. The famous building has seen the start of careers for many well-known Australian journalists and broadcasters, in between a few drinks at the famous Oxford Scholar pub across the road. The old Oxford Scholar is no longer there, demolished because of the Metro Tunnel development. But it was a Melbourne institution, where students from all over Australia and internationally, including Loxley, got together to try and solve the world’s problems. It was at RMIT that Loxley first had her eye on a career as a broadcaster. She eventually moved to Perth and at 21 she got a job at the ABC radio station Triple J. A year later, in late 2003, she got the call to read her first ABC television news bulletin – and at the age of 22, was very young in industry terms. “I remember the first news bulletin I read, I came off and my heart was pounding,” she says. “I was so nervous, but I really enjoyed it.” The late Paul Lockyer was reading weeknight ABC News for Western Australia full-time, but he ended up moving back to Sydney.

The station gave Loxley the gig permanently in 2006 and she has never looked back. For two and a half years and still only in her 20s, Loxley read the Monday-to-Friday main news bulletin from Perth and also hosted the statewide drive radio program. It was in Perth where she met her now-husband, Melbourne-based barrister Kane Loxley. She eventually gave the plum gig up in Perth to come back home to live with him. “It really was a big decision because I loved my job, I had an incredible job,” she says. “It was a bit of a risk because obviously I was an unknown coming back to Melbourne and to give up such a big role. “But of course looking back now, it was the best thing I did.” Not only was Loxley back in Melbourne where her family is from, but she was also snapped up by Channel Nine and her career has continued to skyrocket. Loxley spent some time in Sydney for Nine including filling in as co-host of the Today show, before settling back in Melbourne where she is the established weekend newsreader. Even when Loxley was filling in on Today there wasn’t the almost daily scrutiny that breakfast television and the hosts receive. “Twenty years ago you might not have known who was hosting Today or Sunrise, whereas everyone in Australia knows them by their first names,” she says. “That has been a complete change. “I think it’s really hard for people who aren’t seeing that sort of publicity, that is a hard transition.” On the family front, Loxley is mum to Archie, 5, Ned, 3, and Ada, three months. Last month, she returned from maternity leave to read Nine’s weekend news, and hopes to be back to read the network’s 4pm weekday news soon. The Loxley family live in Melbourne’s bustling inner northeast, on the CBD’s very edge.

“I love the sense of community and being so close to the city,” she says. Raising three kids aged five and under can be busy and tough at times, but Loxley wouldn’t have it any other way. “I love it,” she says of motherhood. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but it’s also the best thing I’ve ever done. It’s pretty awesome to see their personalities evolving. “Eighty per cent of the time the boys get along, and the rest of the time they are wrestling or doing something like that.” With work and the kids there isn’t much time off for Loxley, and that includes playing the sport she loved so much growing up, before her passion for broadcast took hold – tennis. “I haven’t played in a long time,” she says. “I’m hoping to get back into it when the kids are a bit older.” ●

rom naked tours of the State Library to conversations about rom-coms, the Melbourne Writers Festival offers up the weirdly wonderful and then some. This year’s program of 349 events features a host of international and local authors, as well as performers, musicians and artists. The theme, “When We Talk About Love”, was inspired by a common thread running through each event, festival artistic director Marieke Hardy says. “Love kept coming up and thinking about all the permutations of that, so not just necessarily romantic love, but also family love, connection to place and home, grief, resilience and connection, which is a really big part of our entire program in ways that people speak about human experience,” she says. “It just seemed right.” The theme’s title pays homage to late American writer and poet Raymond Carver and his 1981 book of short stories, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. Festival goers can expect traditional lectures and panel conversations, but this year brings a beefedup performance element. Think cabaret to comedy, singing and striptease. “We made some changes in this festival this year so there’s a lot more live music, it’s more of a literary arts festival,” Hardy says. “I wanted a program that ensured a traditional heartland audience still felt welcome and still had a lot of events they could access. I’m confident that this year will bring a whole range of audiences together, so there’s something for everyone.” Australia’s expanding list of literary festivals has seen organisers band together to bag the big names on the book circuit, so Melbourne Writers Festival has teamed with Sydney’s Antidote Festival, Canberra Writers Festival, Brisbane Writers Festival, Sydney Jewish Writers Festival and Word Christchurch. Planning for each festival begins long before the calendar year, along with the book reading. “We’re already thinking about 2020 themes and who we can invite and starting to plan at the moment,” Hardy says. “So after the festival, we’ll rest for a few days and then start again.” ●

was fortunate enough to visit the birthplace of the famous Pasteis de Nata – more commonly known as Portugese egg tarts – on my recent trip to Portugal. A short tram or taxi ride out of the centre of Lisbon, in the area of Belem, is a large bakery known as Pasteis de Belem. It is said that the recipe hasn't changed since the 1800s when it was invented by the monastery around the corner from where the bakery stands. It is estimated that every day 20,000 tarts are sold. My version of the original recipe has been simplified for the home kitchen. I've included a coffee glaze to brush over the top of the tarts as it reminds me of having a cup of black coffee with these little morsels. You may, of course, leave out the glaze. If you have leftover custard, keep it in your fridge and serve it with your cakes or puddings. ●

Instagram: @diana.chan.au

Pasteis de Nata (Portugese egg tarts) Ingredients (Makes 12) 1 packet store-bought puff pastry For the custard 1½ tablespoons plain flour 2/ cups milk, divided 3 2/ cups granulated sugar 3 1 cinnamon stick 1/ cup water 3 ∏ teaspoon vanilla bean paste 3 large egg yolks, whisked For the coffee glaze 1 cup icing sugar 3 tbsp coffee powder 2 tbsp water For the garnish Icing sugar Ground cinnamon Method ■ In a medium bowl, whisk the flour and 1/8 cup milk until smooth. ■ For the syrup, place the sugar, cinnamon, and water to a boil in a small saucepan and cook until a

thermometer registers 100°C. Do not stir. ■ In another small saucepan, heat the remaining milk. Whisk the hot milk into the flour mixture. ■ Remove the cinnamon stick and then pour the sugar syrup in a thin stream into the hot milk-andflour mixture, whisking briskly. Add the vanilla and stir for a minute until very warm but not hot. Whisk in the yolks, strain the mixture into a bowl, cover with cling wrap and set aside. This custard is meant to be slightly thinner than normal. ■ Preheat the oven to 250°C . Remove the pastry from the freezer and let it defrost so that it is pliable before rolling. Cut out circles to fit the base of a muffin tray but with enough overhang to push the pastry up the sides, starting from the bottom. ■ Fill each pastry cup 3/4 full with the cooled custard. Bake for 18-30 minutes or until the edges of the dough are brown. ■ Remove tarts from the oven and cool until just warm. Make the coffee glaze by dissolving the coffee and the sugar in a small bowl with the water. Using a pastry brush, apply the glaze on top of the tarts, then sprinkle with icing sugar and cinnamon to serve. ●

t used to be all about pubs when it came to AFL players having a side business off the field. But these days things are a bit more adventurous. Hawthorn players Isaac Smith and James Frawley are evidence of that as they lead the way in their new venture. The pair are business partners in the Richmond restaurant Jamu,

With a modern south-east Asian menu featuring Australian influences that is designed for sharing, and a layout that wouldn’t look out of place in downtown Manhattan, Jamu is not the traditional Aussie pub that footballers were once known for. “James and I both enjoy the hospitality and love the business,” Smith says. “I guess pubs were probably the way to go years ago for footy players, but I think Australia has changed culturally. “Pubs are still very popular, but so is the restaurant and bar industry now. “I think it’s a progression of society.”

HEALTH & WELLBEING

hile there’s a lot to love about spring, the warmer days can be a headache for allergy sufferers, with high pollen counts making life unpleasant for the estimated 3.1 million Australians with hay fever. Melbourne is particularly bad thanks to its geography and climate, and is known as one of the allergy capitals of the world. “We are surrounded by dry grass planes,” says Dr Sarah Morrison, ear and nose specialist at Epworth Richmond. “We have wet springs, which mean grasses grow a lot. Then, as we suddenly get hot, the pollens are blown around everywhere thanks to dry northerly winds, and there’s no humidity to dampen them down.” Help is at hand, however. From preventative measures to treatments including nasal sprays and even surgery, there are a variety of options available, depending on the severity of symptoms.

“If you think you have an allergy, try to determine what you’re allergic to,” Dr Morrison suggests. “The common ones year-round are animals and moulds. Seasonal ones tend to be pollens from either grasses or trees.” Experts have designed the Melbourne Pollen Count app, which offers pollen counts and even forecasts potential thunderstorm asthma events, allowing users to minimise their exposure. If you have asthma, it’s particularly important to treat hay fever. Asthma Australia notes that hay fever can make asthma worse and more difficult to control. “If you adequately treat your hay fever, you can reduce your asthma symptoms,” Dr Morrison says. “It’s really important, if you’re asthmatic, not to ignore your hay fever symptoms.” General treatment options for hay fever include nasal sprays and antihistamines. If things are

particularly serious, surgery is also an option, although generally as a last resort. “Don’t underestimate your symptoms. For milder symptoms, talk to your pharmacist. If they’re more severe, talk to your GP and then go from there.” ● ANDERS FURZE

Clinker bricks are your classic Melbourne onomatopoeia. Knock these wonky red-blues together and they’ll make a bright “clink”, proof of their having been fired at 1300 degrees Celsius, compared with 800 degrees for regular bricks. Architects of the 1930s loved these over-heated weirdos, and posh locales such as Kew East are full of clinker belles. Walk north up Munro Street and you get a subtle impression of a fortress, house by house, softened with camellias but mighty nonetheless. This solid-brick, two-storey house has been a family home for 12 years, basking in a sunny north-west orientation and walkable to Doncaster Road’s shops. The big garden comes with a glass-fenced pool and a covered terrace, ideal for families who love to have friends around for barbecues. The original house is a 1930s Tudor Revival design with an arched porch and three original rooms with flowerspangled deco ceilings. Courtesy of careful extension, it’s now a contemporary family home that mixes old and new in subtle style. A young family can enjoy everything for the next decade, then contemplate an update or two. Standing gracefully on the high side of the street, the property offers formal and casual living and dining, a central kitchen, a study and zoned bedrooms, including a groundfloor main suite. Hardwood floorboards and tripartite sash windows uphold the vintage good looks. There’s an airy central hall opening to adjoining living and dining rooms with an open fireplace. The facade is an outstanding addition to the street. The only bedroom on ground level, the main, has a walk-in wardrobe, en suite and window seat. Reached through the kitchen and meals area, the rear deck gets up close with the pool, beyond which terracing, a sports court, a trampoline and a gazebo provide outdoor entertaining pleasure for all ages. ● KAY KEIGHERY Agent: Marshall White, Stuart Evans 0402 067 710 Price: $4 million-$4.4 million Auction: 2.30pm, August 31

The family focus of this ideally located Edwardian is instantly evident. Period traditions are reflected by the marble fire-places and charming lead-light windows of evocative sitting and dining rooms while bright light and pleasing aspects over the garden and the swimming pool complement informal living/dining areas with an openplan kitchen. Four bedrooms and two bathrooms, including three upstairs bedrooms surrounding a substantial retreat further enhance a home where rich c1910 character and complete comfort may inspire ideas for a contemporary cosmetic update when so desired.
