Let’s make a bucket list, one that ticks off the achievements that so few humans can lay claim to, of the degree of difficulty of winning an Oscar, capturing Olympic gold or venturing into space. Add to that playing the lead role in The Phantom of the Opera, for more than 20 years the most financially successful entertainment event in the world. Enter Melbourne’s Josh Piterman. The St Kilda East theatre star, who learnt his stage craft in Ballarat, beat scores of hopefuls for the role of the Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long-running musical on London’s West End. Meet him this week. ●

“ I am Richard Lawton ” ... a voice coach When I say that I’m a voice coach, people tend to think it’s all “how now, brown cow”, doing scales and that kind of boring stuff. About five times a week I’ll do an individual session and it starts with me asking someone to sing a note – just one long note. You don’t have to be able to sing. I listen to that note and that’s a diagnostic, I can hear the past, present and future there. Your voice is very indicative of your personality, your vocal and mental health. We speak who we are. I grew up just south of Liverpool in Wedgwood, an industrial wasteland. Our parents were great, they said “get educated, leave”, because they had to leave school when they were 14 and get factory jobs. There was always singing around the house. Mum used to sing musicals and Dad had been a Methodist lay preacher before the war, which involved singing. I found Australia when I was on tour as an actor with an art-house theatre. We went to Sydney and I jumped ship and moved into directing; it was a huge relief. You know when you find that thing you’re supposed to do, what you’re here on the planet for? For me it was about helping other people shine. For many years now, I’ve been leading the Soulsong community choir in Elsternwick, two nights a week. It’s become a real tribe, a community. People singing together really bond together, there’s all kinds of research around that. A while back, I also used to run a singing group in the eating disorder unit with a psychologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. The first day I was there, there was a circle of 12 chairs, each with a cushion on it. Everybody came in, sat down, put a cushion on their lap and looked at their shoes, and I thought, “uh-oh, this is not going to be easy”. And then about eight months later we started getting complaints on the noise – yes! It was so touching to see them open up. When you’re putting your voice out, you’re quite naked, quite vulnerable. The voice is such a responsive muscle, unlike your ears and eyes it can be asleep for decades. I work with old people and suddenly in a few minutes they find this big voice. The recurring thing I have from people is “Is that my voice?”, and I say “There’s only two of us here and it wasn’t me”. ●

COVER STORY
M
elbourne classical singer and performer Josh Piterman has scored the role of a lifetime; one he dreamed of as a teenager growing up in St Kilda East. The 34-year-old is now wooing London’s West End, performing the title role in The Phantom Of The Opera. “I’ve been obsessing about this role ever since I started doing musical theatre at high school,” says Piterman from London in between rehearsals. “The director and musical team behind it have been so supportive and instilled in me a confidence to explore this role as an actor beyond the obvious. “I can be the Phantom beyond what we already know of him; I can bring something unique within the parameters.”
Facing the future Moving to London wasn’t a hard decision; it also means Piterman can be closer to his musician girlfriend, Scottish pop singer and songwriter Charlotte Black. “Doing a long-distance relationship has been hard, but we’ve made it work for a year now,” he says. “Knowing we’re in the same time zone does help.” Piterman also knows he has some mighty shoes to fill, following in the steps of music theatre legend Michael Crawford, who played the original Phantom when the show opened at London’s Her Majesty’s Theatre in 1986. “I feel the best way to tackle the role is to think about what I can

bring to it; so I’m really all about the here and now,” he says. Piterman was last in the London six years ago after a season of An Officer and Gentleman in Sydney was cut short after six weeks. “It was sad it didn’t last, but because of that I had my moment of
clarity,” he says. “I thought, ‘there is nothing to do in Australia right now’. I got my Polish passport sorted because of my dad and off I went. I auditioned for a few shows and got a role as Corny Collins in Hairspray.” Since then he has gained attention in Australia as the lead of Gerry
Goffin in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and for his role in Cats alongside Delta Goodrem. He won a Green Room Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical Theatre show at the time. After completing year 12, Piterman moved to Ballarat to study a bachelor

of arts in music theatre at Federation University Australia. “I spent most of my life in East St Kilda and even bought an apartment there, but I look back at that experience in the country; it was good for me,” he says. “It was a reality check in some way, good to leave the city and home for a while.” When Piterman takes to the stage as the Phantom, he knows the vulnerable male character is one he is used to playing. “It’s a bit of a theme for me at the moment,” he smiles, “playing a vulnerable man who is lost and lonely.” Piterman moved to London three months before the season and for the making of the mask. Last year, Piterman found the time to also record a debut self-titled album. It was produced by John Foreman and includes classical and pop versions of Wicked Game by Chris Isaak and All of Me by John Legend to name a few. The album was recorded in Europe with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. For all his achievements (and there have been many), Piterman hit a crossroad after completing Hairspray in London. He felt burnt out and unsure of his path, so he moved back to Melbourne to start his own fitness business for a shift in perspective. “I had been in London for a while and felt I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I had been touring for years. I just needed some time to think,” Piterman says. Self-care was more important to him than ever. “I discovered meditation in my 20s but it wasn’t until shit hit the fan in my personal life – when my marriage broke down [in 2010 after being married to fellow performer
Hayley Nissen] that I went back to it as a source of self-understanding,” he says. Piterman says he loves undertaking a role that challenges him and the Phantom does just that. He also says his life experience has helped nurture and better understand a complex role like the Phantom. “I love that feeling of being nervous on stage. Every role has to give you that sense or it doesn’t push you,” he says.
“I have learnt the difference between that and negative self-talk. “I have experienced both in my career and when young performers ask me for advice, I say ‘meditate’. That’s the only thing that ever helped me get in charge of myself and my thoughts.” ● THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA \ Her Majesty’s Theatre, London. Kick-off is the civilised time of 11.30am, and it’s a rowdy party vibe, perfect for big groups of girly catch-ups, extended family get-togethers, and that informal first date when you secretly want to hit the pub, but you’re only at the “doing coffee” stage. Dress code skews posh with lots of fancy footwear, leather jeggings and white jeans. As you step into the cavernous space of the rustic, converted mill – all moody greys and clever lighting – the city feels kilometres away, like you’ve discovered a secret urban winery. Join the buzzy throng and hit the bar queue first.
Staff will measure a vodka shot, then mix as you like – grapefruit juice with a twizzle of cinnamon, praps? It’s an open bar, but “bottomless” doesn’t mean “legless” so if you want three cocktails, three bodies need to front up and make them; you can’t get three drinks at one time for the table. Next up, food! It’s a groaning veg-heavy, Ottolenghi-meets-posh hotel feast, a sprawling spread of all your brunchy hopes and dreams. Sweet? Um, hello, there’s a pavlova station, along with door-stopper slabs of challah french toast with rosewater berry compote.

t was while working as a foreign correspondent covering the civil wars in the former Yugoslavia for the ABC’s Four Corners program in 1986 that award-winning journalist Tony Jones first thought about writing a novel. Those years abroad saw him cover horrific war crimes and reporting from the gruesome frontline was best dealt with by notes jotted in diaries – at least in part. From the places he visited and the things he saw, Jones began to plot his
own storyline. “The core idea for the book came to me in the mid-80s when I was sent to Yugoslavia to make a Four Corners project called Nazis in Australia,” Jones says. “It was based on radio documentary-maker Mark Aarons’ six-part series he made for the ABC.” While overseas, Jones was looking for evidence of Nazi war criminals that had concealed their past and migrated to Australia. “Mark’s series revealed that after the Second World War, many war

the secrets and find out what really happened to Katich in 1992. The characters in In Darkness Visible are inspired by Jones’ time spent in these tiny villages in the former Yugoslavia. He also spent a year writing for the novels in 1996 when he and his wife, Sarah Ferguson (an ABC journalist), moved to Rovinj for a year’s long service leave. “Rovinj is a classic divided town with two ethnic groups – there’s an Italian population there and Croatian street signs under the Italian ones. It was a classic place where tensions were always there but they managed to live together. It’s also one of the most beautiful places I ever lived. We had an apartment right there and could see the most beautiful turquoise coloured water of the Adriatic,” Jones says. “The town itself becomes a character in the book as do many of the people I met there.” ●

hen celebrity stylist Lana Wilkinson racked up a designer shoe bill of $8000 in a month so she could dress her A-list clients in peak party season, she knew she had to rethink more than just the maths. She decided to start her own business and paint the town patent pink – one fabulous stiletto at a time. Wilkinson, who lives in Melbourne’s western suburbs with her husband Liam and their two daughters, made a name for herself as a stylist to some of the most high-profile WAGs including Rebecca Judd and Nadia Bartel. It helped that they were friends, but it also led to plenty of styling work that wooed everyone from Zoe Foster-Blake to Megan Gale and Nicole Warne Shadbolt (that’s @nicolewarne on Instagram – 1.7 million followers and counting) in 2014. Wilkinson’s namesake shoe label has launched with nine new styles for spring/summer a month ago. There are kitten-heels and slingbacks for those who don’t fancy a towering stiletto, too. She’s got red-carpet-ready looks aplenty, and heels for your next milestone celebration – endorsed by her favourite Melbourne girl gang.

“I’m all about bold colours. I am not really into nude or black shoes. I also love metallic so that’s what you’ll find in my collection,” she says. “The shoes also had to be comfortable, I had to source the right leathers; the finishing had to be spot on and the quality had to amazing. I had all these boxes to tick. I wasn’t going to put my name to something that wasn’t quality or up to my standard.” Wilkinson, who had a part-time job working with her father in his dry-cleaning firm in her early 20s, got a taste for fashion early and also knew the hard work involved in running your own business by watching him in action. “A lot of people spend a lot of time talking about starting their own business, but not only did I talk about it, I made it happen,” she smiles. And she wouldn’t have done so without the encouragement and support of her husband, family and friends. “For me it’s about something coming to fruition. I would rather try and fail than not try at all. I always want to keep challenging myself.” ● lanawilkinson.com

“I felt there was a gap in the market for reasonably priced and good quality dress shoes when I was styling,” she says of her epiphany. “Everything I liked was a high-end designer and they were simply too much to pay all the time. I also couldn’t get samples of everything I liked when I needed product in bulk, so I would end up buying shoes and they’re still there in my archives. “I also didn’t want to run samples back and forth either.” Wilkinson’s mission to find fun, flirty shoes that don’t cost the earth saw her jot a business plan, find manufacturers in China and plot her business journey by asking friends who worked in footwear manufacturing and retail. “It helped [that] I had people I could bounce ideas off, but ultimately the decision was mine and I had to make the leap of faith. If I was going to do this it had to be done properly,” she says. ure, falling in love with a partner is grand, but have you ever driven a Ferrari? Even for those who do not consider themselves “car people”, to get behind the wheel of Italy’s iconic supercar is like caressing a thoroughbred’s velvety yet muscular flank, or marvelling at a NASA rocket as it spears into space. Be it admiration for the power of the beast or the scope of human achievement, a Ferrari covers both and anyone with warm blood pumping through their veins will be able to appreciate it. A bucket list event is Esperienza Ferrari, reserved for existing Ferrari

pacious architect-designed residences in smaller scale projects with protected views and sought-after locations top the property checklists of affluent downsizers and professionals in Melbourne’s inner east. Directly opposite Orrong Romanis Reserve, Pavilion on the Park easily surpasses these criteria. Its 12 generously proportioned residences enjoy northerly aspects and never-to-be-built-out park vistas, with city views from level three. And the sophisticated stores, services and eateries of Armadale and Hawksburn are within an easy walk. Architect-developer Selwyn Blackstone’s boutique projects are reputed to sell rapidly and Pavilion on the Park is attracting Toorak, Armadale, Hawthorn and Camberwell downsizers and professionals. Agent Matt Carver says the combination of architect and developer has inherent advantages; buyers are able to reconfigure layouts and finishes. “Selwyn will work individually with buyers to reconfigure layouts and vary specified finishes – he wants buyers to have homes that suit them.” ● LIZ McLACHLAN

For Noel and Marlene Gould of Gould Holden car dealership fame, life is a colourful game. The two are formidable golfers, and when footy season starts their necks are draped in red and white in honour of the Sydney Swans. However, their Malvern home reveals a different facet of the Goulds: They collect Australian art and seem to have a natural instinct for curation. Their two-storey house, designed for the Goulds by Ashley Lochhead and completed in 2009, shows a keen eye for texture and line, with lots of vertical and horizontal planes on which to display contemporary art. Marble, timber cabinetry and herringbone parquetry bring a luxe cosiness to the interior. That said, this house is practical. With formal and casual living, a huge main suite and a jasmine-walled courtyard garden for balmy barbecues under the stars, the floor plan will captivate families and downsizers. Malvern Central School is walkable and the M1 is quickly accessible. Step in via double doors of frosted glass. The living room, to the left, has an open fireplace flanked by bookcases. French doors lead to the walled front courtyard. Pull back the bifold doors to the dining room, which flows in turn to the family room and thence to the courtyard. The kitchen is artfully concealed. It rolls out, double galleystyle, behind the dining room’s timber laminate wall and has an Ilve 900-millimetre gas cooktop and oven amid ivory cabinetry and pull-out vertical pantries. One corner is given to a cocktail bar with glass shelves. The family room is smart-casual in parquetry with a timber

This Workroom-designed house looks like a cutting-edge art gallery, and its appearance does not lie – there’s plentiful wall space. However, the natural beauty is in the cul-de-sac setting, with a park gate from the courtyard into the Victoria Gardens. The two-storey house is “upside down”, with living areas on the top floor. The skylit interior looks sleek in oak against polished concrete, with fully-tiled bathrooms. On the ground floor, three zoned bedrooms include a main suite (twin en suite, walk-in wardrobe) that opens to a courtyard with decks, seating and a barbecue.
