French Open champion Ash Barty inspires superlatives and yet it doesn’t seem right to heap saccharine comments on a young woman who is so humble and down to earth. That comes across in her feature interview this week. She spoke to journalist Josh Bozin ahead of the 2020 Australian Open (which kicks off on January 20, with coverage on Nine), while launching a special watch that commemorates her record-breaking achievements this season. She is world No.1 but concedes the competition for her crown is intense, and this will make for compelling contests at Melbourne Park. ●

“ I am Valda Kitchell ” … a neonatal intensive care nurse at the Royal Women’s Hospital For women of my vintage, the main career options
were teaching, nursing, being a secretary or hair dressing. I was really lucky – I didn’t have to think about it. I just knew I wanted to be a nurse. I started general nursing in 1973 at St Vincent’s Hospital. Back then, everyone trained in hospitals. I stayed at St Vincent’s in the surgical ward, which I loved, for nine years. There was an expectation at the time that you’d do midwifery at some point, so I came and studied midwifery at the Royal Women’s Hospital. I thought I’d love the labour ward, but when I got to neonatal intensive care I discovered my passion – I love being with the babies and supporting the families. After doing my neonatal intensive care course, I
decided that I needed to do more study, so I went back and did a bachelor of applied science and a post-graduate diploma in child and family studies. I started working in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) at the Women’s in ’85, and I’ve been here ever since. I work 12-hour shifts in the NICU and, as an associate unit manager, I’m in charge of ensuring the nursing supervision. We have over 9000 deliveries at the Women’s each year, and of those, we have over 2200 admissions into the NICU. We have babies from 23 weeks – that’s up to 17 weeks early. Caring for premature babies is the majority of what we do. It’s a challenging job – even a routine day is physically and mentally demanding, hectic and

unpredictable, but my husband and two adult sons support me and help me unwind after a difficult shift. To do the job, you need to be dynamic and interactive to cope with all situations. You’ve also got to be able to keep up with change. Our role is to provide the best medical and nursing care during the baby’s life, but also to support the family and help them create memories. We’re emotionally involved. You can’t separate from that because a baby might be here for less than a day, but some babies might be here for six or eight months, so you can imagine the relationship that you build up with those families. ● ● thewomens.org.au

ueen of the court; the world’s No.1 ranked female tennis player. French Open champion Ash Barty has put her name in the history books of both tennis and wider Australian sport. From afar, it would seem that the 23-year-old from Ipswich, Queensland isn’t all that fazed by the prestigious accolades, record amount of prize money (no player – not even Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Serena Williams – has ever received such riches from a single tournament as Barty did from her win in Shenzhen, China) or the global fame her achievements have since afforded her. From the title win at the Miami Open in March to her unforgettable triumph – and a maiden grand slam event title – at the French Open in June, Barty’s coveted WTA world No.1 slot was the icing on the cake, ending the year on an all-time high. In doing so, she has become the first Australian woman to hold the No.1 rank at the end of a season, on top of being the first Australian woman to reach No.1 since Evonne Goolagong Cawley in 1976.
As versatile as Barty is on court – she is an allcourt player, trading shots on grass, clay and hardcourts with ease – off the court, she is just as impressive, juggling many different hats throughout the year. She works closely with Tennis Australia as the national Indigenous tennis ambassador, a role which she is extremely proud of as an Indigenous woman, and also recently launched the national campaign #PlayForYou, which encourages young girls to stay in sport. Barty is also a Rado YoungStars ambassador. It’s this partnership with the Swiss watchmaker that has afforded her the luxury of creating her own timepiece: the limited edition Rado HyperChrome, a sentimental watch that signifies Barty’s momentous achievements in 2019. While indifferent to the glitz and glamour that comes with her position as the world’s best tennis female player, Barty has an affinity for watches and it’s her design of the Rado HyperChrome that is most special. “I am slightly addicted to watches, I must admit.
that every moment, move, and play, counts. And it’s no different away from the tennis world. “I try to enjoy and appreciate every moment I have, wherever I may be in the world,” Barty says. “My time at home with family and friends, in particular, is always precious to me; it keeps me happy. There is nothing better than spending time with them and doing the simple things like taking my dogs for a walk or playing golf with my boyfriend; I’m a real homebody.” It’s Barty’s penchant for the simple things in life or, perhaps, her perspective that is the key to her success. Regarded as a junior prodigy in her early teens, she learnt the hardships of being in the public eye at a very young age. As a result, in 2016, Barty took a two-year break to experience life as a normal teenage girl, almost giving up tennis for good. “Keeping things in perspective is something I have definitely got better at,” she says. “There will always be good days and bad days but I have learnt that even if I have a tough match or a

So when Rado asked me if I would like to collaborate on a special timepiece, I jumped at the opportunity,” Barty says. “I really enjoyed working on the design and helping the team create this beautiful piece that I can literally wear anywhere. I feel so honoured that Rado created this with me and I will treasure it forever.”
B
arty’s watch design has a 36-millimetre mother-of-pearl dial, presented in white high-tech ceramic with silver coloured detailing and a bezel set with 60 diamonds. A special engraving on the case back reveals Barty’s signature coupled with the inscription “Limited Edition. One of 123”. The numerals represent her reaching the No.1 ranking in the world at the age of 23. “Not only is she an incredible athlete and a great role model, but Ash is a fantastic representative of Rado and our values,” Rado chief executive Matthias Breschan says. “This limited edition watch was the best way we could think of to mark her incredible year to remember.” On the matter of time, Barty seems to be making the most of this precious commodity; she knows
disappointing result, it’s going to be OK at the end of the day. “Regardless of what happens in a tennis match, I have an incredible family and friends who I love and who love me no matter what. That is the most important thing. “I try and set the right example on and off the court and live by the values my parents taught me: to be a good person, respect yourself and your opponent, and to have fun. “If my story inspires even one young boy or girl to follow their dreams then I am very proud of that.” Australian fans of Barty can buy her watch, which was launched in Melbourne last week. From December 3, the Rado HyperChrome Ashleigh Barty Limited Edition is available to order and buy from Rado retailers as well as online. Barty is in action again on home soil next year at the Adelaide International from January 12 to 18, where Rado is the official timekeeper. She will then contest the Australian Open, after reaching the quarter-finals last year, as the top seed in the women’s draw (January 20 to February 2 at Melbourne Park). ● ● rado.com

And last week Barty won her third straight Newcombe Medal as Australia’s most outstanding tennis player of 2019. “It feels great to be in the position that I’m in,” Barty tells Domain Review. “I am so proud of what my team and I have achieved this year; we’ve worked so hard so it’s rewarding to see the effort paying off. Now I get to enjoy some holiday time, which is giving me the chance to relax and reflect on the incredible year my team and I have had.” Barty remains ever so humble, bashful even; she’s content with the result of her year but yearning for more come in 2020. While all eyes are on the world No.1, Barty says the only pressure she feels going into the new year is the pressure she puts on herself. “My team and I go about our training and preparation exactly the same way, regardless of the tournament or the match,” she says. “That routine keeps me focused. My coach Craig Tyzzer and I definitely need to work harder than ever to prepare for matches and make sure we have a solid game plan, as the women’s game is so competitive at the moment. “But I’m hopeful for another consistent year with some great results, starting at home at the Australian Open in January ... I can’t wait.”

TELEVISION Nine’s Tony Jones reveals the secret coach who keeps him on point.
P
icture this: Melbourne sports presenter and broadcaster Tony Jones is dressed in shorts, an apron and Ugg boots. He is perched beside a wood lathe in his garage somewhere in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. Frank Sinatra is blaring from a speaker, Meatloaf only moments before that. With a safety mask fixed to his face, his focus is only on the spinning wooden pen he has been carefully crafting for the last half hour‚ not his wife Annette, who just pulled into the driveway. She steps from her vehicle shaking her head. “Oh Tony,”

she says. “Take a look at yourself.” After more than 34 years in Melbourne’s media industry, Jones confesses to being far more comfortable at home pursuing an obscure hobby than pressing the flesh at network media launches. He says he’s no celebrity and that’s true, of course. But as one of Channel Nine’s most recognisable faces, he’s often approached for a selfie and a chat. “It doesn’t bother me,” he says. “It would bother me more if they didn’t.” For the most part, admirers offer compliments. However, there is the occasional dig. Jones has learnt to weather the critics in a career he kickstarted behind a regional microphone in Wangaratta, before he landed a job at 3AW and then Nine. This year his string of commitments included nightly news sports anchor, host of the Sunday Footy Show and regular fill-in host for Neil Mitchell’s morning talkback

show on 3AW. Last month he announced he would quit his role with the Today breakfast show due to an unsustainable workload. In January, Jones will helm Nine’s Australian Open coverage alongside Rebecca Maddern and James Bracey. It was only last year, in the network’s inaugural broadcast of the event, that Jones arguably copped the worst flak of his career. Keyboard warriors took aim after his interview with women’s champion Naomi Osaka. Such was the social media lambasting, he removed himself from Twitter. “I asked the questions that anybody else would have asked of a difficult interviewee,” Jones says. “I’ve not looked back at it. I just find it has absolutely taken on a life of its own. Do I lose any sleep over it? No. Does it annoy me? Yeah.” Even as Jones’ media commitments have ballooned, he says his ego hasn’t. He has his wife to thank for
that. When serving as a radio host, Annette is always on the phone to offer a text or two. “She tells me if I have stepped out of line; if I have been too harsh or rude to somebody she will text straight away.” Sometimes, “Dorothy from Rosebud” even rates a mention. “I can be fairly critical,” Annette says. “But I think I’m fair. If he’s been good I’ll tell him, too. I weigh up both sides. I know what his intent is.” But it’s rare if those issues of the day make it past the front door. “Sometimes, I get a couple of minutes to get whatever I’ve got on my chest off it. Then we talk about the dog,” Jones says. With his wife as his greatest support, Jones acknowledges that most of his other inspirations are no longer with us. There was Collingwood legend Lou Richards. The pair worked together across many years. “Lou was a great role model and there are still things he
would say to me that I recall now.” From a presenting point of view there was Brian Naylor, the Nine anchor who died during the Black Saturday bushfires. Then his current colleague, Peter Hitchener. “With Brian there was this great authority. With Hitch there is this great compassion and warmth. I’m not saying that just to be a company man. But when you’re sitting next to those blokes it’s like when a footballer is playing under a great coach. You learn a lot from them.” In heading up Nine’s 2020 Australian Open coverage, Jones says he is looking forward to again being a part of one of Australia’s greatest international sporting spectacles. He’s a big fan of world No.1 Ash Barty and the list of young up-andcomers who are likely ready to yet again make their mark. But his opinion on one of our more polarising tennis exports, Nick Kyrgios, remains mixed. “I just think
it’s so sad in a way because he could be No.1 in the world. But there are two Nicks. There is the appalling Nick and the adorable Nick and … when he’s good, he’s really engaging.” Watching Jones navigate an interview with the surly star will surely prove unmissable viewing. Jones remains more than happy to confront any would-be critics of his presenting style, if it means good ratings. He is a TV man, after all. “It’s like playing a game of footy, you are constantly looking at the scoreboard and when you lose you are hardly going to high-five,” he says. “We get judged every night and get the verdict every morning.” ● AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2020 \ Tony Jones will be part of the hosting lineup for the 2020 Australian Open, broadcast on Nine from January 20. ackstage at the Vision Australia’s Carols By Candlelight at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl on December 24 is one of the most joyous occasions imaginable for a professional singer in Australia. You may find Silvie Paladino or Marina Prior practising their runs, Denis Walter perfecting his dulcet tones, David Hobson gearing up to sing the showstopper The Holy City, or Rhonda Burchmore
“Christmas wouldn’t be the same without ‘Carols By Candlelight’ in my life, and my family’s life.” in a gown that could easily grace the Logies red carpet. With the orchestra and choir present as well at the Bowl, it can be chaotic. But one thing is for sure, despite the hubbub, every performer carries a smile and is happily donating his or her own time to raise funds on the night for Vision Australia. Part of that backstage crew for a long time now have been husbands Anthony Callea, who has been performing at Carols for 16 years, and Tim Campbell, who has been on the stage for 11 years. “That’s part of the fun of Carols to be honest, the whole backstage antics, there is so much going on,” Campbell says. “It’s like a massive yearly catch-up for all of us, because throughout the year we don’t even see each other and you pick up from where you left off.”
TIM CAMPBELL
The event has well and truly become part of their Christmas tradition. “Christmas wouldn’t be the same without Carols By Candlelight in my life, and my family’s life,” Campbell says. The couple love the vibe so much that after singing at Carols, they always invite some of the cast and crew back to their house for post-concert drinks. On one occasion, Casey Donovan was the last to leave well into the early morning, around the time Santa was due to arrive. This year Campbell will once again be performing in the children’s portion of the show while Callea will sing a couple of numbers. “The kids’ section is a great part to be involved in,” Campbell says. “Christie Whelan Browne is doing it too this year which is going to be lots of
fun.” After the build-up to Carols, performing on the night and the famous Campbell-Callea postevent drinks at home, the boys are exhausted when Christmas Day arrives. “We warm up some party pies, and we sit there and stuff our face until we realise we should actually have a shower and get ready to go and see a few people on Christmas Day,” Campbell says. For the couple, it is an honour to be invited back to perform year after year. ‘It’s such an iconic show,” Campbell says. “Not only in Victoria, but across the country. “To be involved in that, and involved for this long, it’s certainly something we don’t take for granted every year.” ● ● carols.visionaustralia.org

Think Stratford, think Shakespeare. However, there’s something very nudge-nudge naughty going on here, in this estate named for the Bard’s home town and looking as winsome as those diamond-paned windows and studded timber doors he would have known. Wot’s this, then, in the secluded main bedroom? A secret door? To let the lover flee onto the landing when the spouse comes to claim conjugal rights? Blimey. King Henry VIII would have fancied a bit of this when entertaining his mistresses. It’s this sense of story that attracted Stratford’s owner when she bought the 1924 Tudor-style clinker-brick beauty five years ago. The serial renovator has restored the property with impressive panache, blending contemporary standards with ye olde timber ceilings and cosy nooks that would have been English hallmarks in the 1500s. Fireplaces in zigzag brick look old but are new. Oak parquetry is French in style, inspired by Versailles, yet is fresh and ready for family life. “I could see the potential to make something special – not a showpiece, but something where everyone feels at home,” she says. “The dining room – my favourite room – makes this a Christmas house. I bring out the gold decorations and traditional English crockery and it comes alive. People say ‘This is a magical place’ and I agree; it isn’t ostentatious, but there’s a warmth and cosiness, and that is what I’ll miss when I go.” Step off Sackville Street into Stratford’s garden and it seems a good five degrees cooler under the pin oaks, elms and maples. The two-storey house has formal living and
