With our laidback approach to most things, you would not expect Australians to do skincare well. As the French daubed delicate creams, we would smear a bit of zinc on the nose and head out back to the barbie. So it is a major feat for an Australian skincare line to launch into a department store, alongside giants like Chanel and Lancome, let alone to achieve the success and status needed to open stores in the US and UK. But Toorak couple Chris and Andrea Moss have done just that. Our cover story this week is a tale of a triumphant local business built on a dynamic partnership. ●

DESIGN Vince Lebon’s shoe brand began at a market – global success followed. Wo r d s

W

hen Rollie Nation founder and designer Vince Lebon was growing up, everyone thought he’d have a career in science, rather than make a global name for himself in the shoe business. But despite being a top maths student, by year 11 he turned his focus to art and product design. “I woke up one day and said, ‘This is not the life I want.’ It was tough for my parents but they supported me even though they didn’t understand it.” Sometimes even he can’t believe that a kid from Melbourne ended up working overseas with the top creatives, designing sneakers. “When I was sitting in Brooklyn with [designer] Alexander Wang and Beyonce’s team, it crossed my mind, ‘Wow, this is really happening!’ But I always thought I was capable of achievement. And, I still feel like I have more to achieve.” Emigrating from Mauritius to the western suburbs of Melbourne when he was just a year old, Lebon watched his father work hard and make sacrifices, going from office cleaner to a senior management position. “He had two jobs at a time and said, ‘Never do a half job. If you’re going to do something, do it properly.’” Lebon, 36, took that advice seriously. His work led him first to China – where he found himself designing 400 shoes a season – and later to New York, where even working with adidas Brooklyn Creator Farm, the centre of sneaker design, didn’t make the city feel like home. “I had a love-hate relationship with New York, with extreme highs and lows.” By that time, he was married with two children. “And, I had to ask myself, was it what I wanted for my kids?” It wasn’t. In between, Lebon launched Rollie Nation in Melbourne in 2012, at first selling his wares from the South Melbourne Market. It was an instant success – 500 pairs were sold in the first five weeks, and they are now sold around the world. “I just knew we had something special. There’s a saying, ‘Love what you do and you’ll never work a day.’ I love my work so much that I work through those hard moments, like working until 2am

If the shoe fits ... every day.” He found there were advantages to being from Melbourne. “We’re quite disconnected from the rest of the world, and with that comes more clarity. You’re not so distracted, you’re able to really hone in on problems and make connections with people.” The launch of his sneaker line, RN, is the culmination of another dream, and he has already

“I’ve kept all core 15 people in the business employed and I really love Melbourne. It has the right tempo, the right energy.”

watched singer-musician Gotye wear his sneakers when accepting the ARIA Award for Song of the Year in 2012. Where to from here? “I’ve slowed the pace a little bit but I’m more driven than ever. I’m just so excited about the sneakers.” His father views his sneaker success as “the cream” since his main goal was to get his children educated well first. As for Lebon himself, he ploughed through the pandemic with his integrity intact. “I’ve kept all 15 core people in the business employed and I really love Melbourne. It has the right tempo, the right energy.” ●

Beauty entrepreneurs Andrea and Chris Moss have shaped a dynamic personal and professional partnership. Wo r d s R AC H E L L E U N R E I C H

The perfect formulation

S

ome people emerged from Melbourne’s lockdown looking bleary-eyed, paler and heavier. Is it any wonder that plastic surgeon Chris Moss and his wife Andrea – who is also the co-founder and chief executive of the couple’s skincare centre Liberty Belle and its product range (which she also co-created) – look so dewy and dreamy that no one would guess their true ages, 56 and 52 respectively? Andrea is used to people asking pointedly and not so quietly, “WHAT DO YOU DO?” – presuming, of course, that her skilled husband has had a hand in her youthful visage. Not really. “I don’t feel any pressure to look good,” she says, knowing that wives of plastic surgeons are often under extra scrutiny. “Chris has operated on me – but it was when I dropped a bottle of wine on my toe and severed a tendon. He stitched it up while I played assistant and retracted my skin. He’ll operate on me again – when I have a facelift!” One isn’t on the cards for now; she hasn’t used anti-wrinkle injections for the past five years. “I wanted my skin to be an honest canvas to reflect the results of Liberty Belle Rx. I trashed my skin when I was young; I basically grew up on a tennis court in Gisborne and never wore sunscreen.” Now in David Jones where it has dedicated counters and staff, Liberty Belle Rx, their product range of cleansers, serums, treatments and moisturisers, is set to launch in bricks and mortar stores in the UK and US next year, and has therefore passed compliance tests of the highest standards, Andrea says. Chris already had a name as a well-known and highly regarded plastic surgeon in Melbourne. From his humble four-room office in 1999, they expanded into a compound, the Liberty Belle Skin Centre, on Toorak Road in 2008. By 2018, they launched their product range, and by Christmas, there will be 19 products in the

Surgeon Dr Chris Moss and his wife, businesswoman Andrea.

Liberty Belle Rx line, which has catchy names such as Superhero (an antioxidant moisturiser with antipollution and blue light defence), Glam Squad (a hydrating and brightening serum) and Lionheart (a citrus cleansing emulsion). But the flashiness ends there, since the Liberty Belle Rx packaging is clean and sparse, perhaps a gentle nod to its ingredients that are equally clean and efficient. Chris says he wanted to start the line because his philosophy as a plastic surgeon is one of “complete aesthetic care”. “You don’t just do things with surgery; you use the best technology for the person’s needs … The nonsurgical things, although not as powerful as surgery, do things that surgery can’t do,” he says.

Some of their plans to expand – including talks with a large US online platform – had to stop during the height of the pandemic. Domestic life got busier, and Andrea says it was a chance for her to “cook up a storm, use the recipe books I’d never had a chance to read and spend quality time with the kids”. Their eldest, Sophie, is 17, and sons Kif (a nickname for Chris) and William are 15 and 12. Once known for her stint on The Real Housewives of Melbourne where she gained a reputation for being a fervent list-maker, Andrea now calls herself the “Make It Happen” person, with Chris adding that “she’s an amazing organiser – she’s very efficient”. “She takes care of running the logistics and the whole team. She’s the most incredibly generous person to everybody, always putting everyone’s needs ahead of her own. She keeps the whole machinery running and that’s really important in the success of this, because it means I can really focus on the science.” In those two decades, much has changed in their world; even this year, when lockdown began, they noticed that more people looked to alter their

“You can do beautiful surgery and re-contour a face, but if the skin still looks sun-damaged or has lines or looks tired – then you improve the skin surface as well.” The products he’d been using on patients were often deficient; he’d also realised, through seeing so many clients – 40,000 have been through their skin centre and suites over 20 years – what ingredients worked and what didn’t. Andrea knew that the key to success was “providing beautiful ingredients in a formulation that delivers these incredible actives to the skin in a gentle way”. She asked that the products didn’t ball under her makeup, whereas Chris’ scientific approach ensured every ingredient earned its place in the range. Andrea realised they could produce something better than the market offerings when she picked up an eye cream “and I saw that one of its ingredients was fish gonads, or something. I was like, ‘My god, what was the thinking behind that?’”

appearances, having been so much more cognisant of what they looked like on Zoom screens. Still, even though plenty of influencers post their Liberty Belle-related snaps, the couple rely on word of mouth, not ambassadors (which they don’t have). “If you look at the purchases online every month, the repeat clients are so high and they keep coming back and adding to the range,” Andrea says. “It’s the results of the skincare that’s driving its popularity,” Chris adds. How do they make their personal and professional partnerships work so well, having been working together for 19 years and married for 18? Chris says: “It’s important to have teamwork,” whereas Andrea puts it down to the stars. “I don’t know, I feel like I really lucked out, meeting Chris at Redheads [nightclub] all those years ago. I think we have the same values but very different skills.” ● ● libertybelle.com.au

REAL ESTATE Victoria’s famous beach retreat Fender House is for sale. Wo r d s

A

t 23, most of us are trying to figure out what’s next and forge ahead in our career between study, part-time work and whatever other curve balls we face as young adults. But Australian architect Karl Fender took a slightly different approach to career navigation. In the early 1970s he was commissioned by a client to design what today is known as The Fender House, an expansive modernist home on 1.2 hectares at 109 Hopetoun Avenue, Mount Martha, on the Mornington Peninsula. Over the decades, new owners would come and go with various cosmetic alterations and tack-ons to the home. Structurally Fender’s original build and the bones of the home remained intact, but the gardens became overgrown and the pool needed major repair. Internally, some 1980s and ’90s changes were far removed from its original midcentury charm. By the time Katie and Ian Brannaghan bought it in 2017, it needed major repairs and restoration. “It was falling apart and it needed so much work but we could see the potential,” Katie says. “The bones of the property were beautiful and you could see the amazing design but the home itself was filled with stuff and had been neglected over the years.” The Brannaghans had their work cut out but couldn’t turn away from this rare gem, designed

Return to glory days before Fender became one half of Fender Katsalidis Architects, a practice known for designing the Eureka Tower and Tasmania’s MONA (Museum of Old and New Art). Restoring the home to its former glory was a challenge they relished. “We originally thought a lick of paint and some carpet would do the trick,” Katie laughs. “We were rather naive,” Ian adds. They and their two young daughters relocated from inner Melbourne and moved into their new home while renovations took place. For them, it was crucial they returned the home to its modernist roots, honouring the original design of its era while also bringing it into the contemporary era with state-of-the-art comforts. “It’s so important to look after these old, unique buildings,” Ian says.

Some of the extensive updates included introducing a hydronic heating and cooling system, replacing all flooring, restoring and rendering the pool, installing a new kitchen and landscaping. While retaining as many of the home originals features, when integrating modern touches Katie and Ian meticulously selected materials that were reminiscent of the 1970s, including terrazzo flooring, green carpets and wood panelling. They received a major tick of approval when Fender visited their home after the renovation was complete. “He brought some of the original floor plans with him and it turned out a lot of the renovations we did actually returned the home closely to its original design, which was a fluke,” says Ian. The Brannaghan family are now moving onto their next project, and hope the new owners enjoy living here just as much as they have. “This home is a rare find,” says listing agent Kristy Taylor, of Taylor & Co Realty. “Fender House is one of Australia’s most iconic beach houses and a Karl Fender, mid-century masterpiece.” ●

DION GEORGOPOULOS

inger Gorman knows the internet’s dark and evil underbelly only too well. The author even knows where the internet trolls who share the most hatred vitriol hang out. Her book, Troll Hunting, sheds light on the world’s most vile keyboard warriors. When researching what makes internet trolls tick, Gorman gained unprecedented access to trolls and uncovered how they’re linked to real-life crimes. She even formed strange and enduring relationships with them. Gorman wrote the book after receiving scores of hateful tweets, including a death threat. She found pictures of herself and family on a fascist website. While initially terrified, she grew curious to understand who these trolls were. As a journalist, she reached out to them, hopeful of an interview. The interviews resulted in a book that propelled her into a career speaking about her work. Troll Hunting, which uncovers links between

What we need is a kindness pandemic

“There are all kinds of wondrous ways we can connect with each other online during this time, so let’s use the internet for good.” trolling and cyber-hate and real-life crimes, shot on to the best-selling list. “Predator trolls are often better educated than you expect,” Gorman says. “They aren’t necessarily motivated by what you expect. And yet the damage they do is far beyond imagination.” Once the book – which contains graphic accounts – was published, Gorman was diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder. “I was alone in my office, crying and drinking and trying to write this book, and it kind of got spat out into the sunlight in the most dramatic and terrifying way,” she says. “I never dreamed that it would even be read by anyone, let alone that I’d get so many messages from all around the world.” Her recovery was helped by a global movement that mushroomed on social media as readers posted messages of support for her and the book.

GINGER GORMAN

“I started getting these selfies from people who had read the book. It was like the world threw their arms around me in my darkest hour,” she says. “They wanted to support me, but they also wanted action on cyber hate.” Gorman admits more time at home and on the internet amid the COVID-19 pandemic brings with it terrible possibilities. She’s passionate about keeping people safe online and hopeful the internet can be a source of comfort in the pandemic for everyone. She has implored Australians to seek out the beautiful glimpse of kindness online and ignore the negative stories. A tweet from Gorman garnered a huge response of examples of kindness and sharing in local communities, which warmed her heart – #kindnesspandemic “There are all kinds of wondrous ways we can

connect with each other online during this time, so let’s use the internet for good,” she says. “We all need to tell these stories, to flood ourselves with light in the darkness.” Gorman is taking comfort in stories of friends and neighbours reaching out and helping each other in this time of crisis. “I would urge everyone just to be aware that our own stress and anxiety levels during this crisis. Kindness is more important than ever.” Trolls love a big news story, so be aware they could be active in the coming months, Gorman warns. “Attaching themselves to a big news story is an easy way to get attention ... there’s likely to be a proliferation of fake news due to COVID-19,” she says. Right now, Gorman craves a little time to pull back from the spotlight. “I just want to stay at home and make fried rice and bake cupcakes with my kids. I’ve got a lot to be grateful for.” ● TROLL HUNTING \ By Ginger Gorman $29.99, out now ● hardiegrant.com/au ● gingergorman.com

TRAVEL \ BALL ARAT An easy drive to this vibrant city is an ideal day trip. As we emerge from our homes, blinking in the bright sunshine after a long period of isolation, we're all going to crave a few day trips. Ballarat will be top of the list for many. It's an easy drive from most parts of Victoria for those wanting to be home in time for dinner – a 115-kilometre coast up the highway from Melbourne. Most of us have visited Sovereign Hill at some stage. This historical park brings to life the stories from Australia’s great 1850s gold rushes. The canopy of mature trees provides a perfect shade under which to explore the heritage statutory pavilion and Ex-Prisoner of War Memorial. A brisk walk around Lake Wendouree takes about an hour. You’ll spot plenty of swans on the sixkilometre Steve Moneghetti running and walking track, named after the Olympian who calls Ballarat home. The art gallery, established in 1884, holds one of the best regional collections in the country. There are many temporary exhibitions and a great little gift shop. N I N A H E N DY
