Rhys Uhlich’s home in regional Victoria has substance and style. The shed house on Phillip Island which the model, fashion designer and film entrepreneur has built for his family, using recycled materials and for a staggeringly small budget of $100,000, should inspire a legion of aspiring home owners to believe they can do the same. This week’s cover feature explores Uhlich’s philosophies and the practicalities of creating a house with a luxe aesthetic – while being eco-friendly – at a low cost. It is an endeavour that is kind on the bank account and the environment, and the result is a triumph. ●

Cake-led recovery The Country Women’s Association has a sweet touch during COVID. Wo r d s

CARMEN ZAMMIT

O

n any normal Saturday morning, little more than the odd Range Rover can be spotted ambling along Toorak’s prestigious Lansell Road. But once a month during the height of Victoria’s COVID-19-related lockdown, traffic jams formed along the leafy avenue as drivers patiently queued up for an order of scones. Yes, scones. The Country Women’s Association’s drive-through scone stall has been one of the unsung success stories of Melbourne’s pandemic crisis, with each freshly baked dozen offering a taste of community and connection we so desperately craved. And, with any luck, it might be a COVID-19 creation that’s here to stay. “We tried it the first time just with scones to see how it would go,” says CWA president Marion Dewar, “and we were stunned by how popular it was.” “People then started requesting things like quiches and sausage rolls, so we kept doing it. We couldn’t bake enough.” When the pandemic forced Victoria into lockdown, it effectively killed off a year’s worth of fundraising and friend-raising events that are the backbone of the CWA’s work, such as their cafe at the Royal Melbourne Show and the monthly high teas at Umina, the 1870s Toorak homestead that is their headquarters. It could’ve spelled the end for the organisation that has supported vulnerable women and children in every corner of the nation for 93 years. But instead, the CWA swung into action creating drive-through pop-up stalls offering scones, slices and delicious homemade treats, tapping into Victoria’s craving for comfort, companionship and the simple pleasures of being connected with the community, the very values the CWA is built on. “Pivot is a very over-used word at the moment,” Dewar laughs, “but that’s exactly what we did and it’s given us a new lease of life. In fact, we’ve grown, we’ve added new members and new branches because people can join what we do online. We’ve had more people respond to what we do than ever before which is really lovely.” Although the scones, sponge cakes and other such treats are a familiar and much-loved part of CWA folklore, they in fact play a vital role in supporting families affected by domestic violence and those needing social housing, while also giving a helping hand to communities hit by drought and bushfire. During the lockdown, Dewar signed off on $4.3 million worth of grants to drought-affected families and a further $300,000 to families hit by bushfire. “I think that’s what appeals to many of the women who join us.

CWA Victoria’s deputy president Pam Mawson, president Marion Dewar and treasurer Marie Vassallo.

“We are a place where everyone is valued and can contribute in some way and what we do makes a very real difference to the community.” In addition to baking for the pop-up stalls, teams of volunteers sewed face masks and scrubs that were delivered to nursing homes and hospitals all over Victoria, and created care packages of toiletries and necessities for women’s shelters and the homeless. “We even had some branches making and taking thank-you gifts to all of the shops in their country towns, just to acknowledge their efforts and say we are thinking of you.” To substitute the money raised from the sale of the 15,345 scones at last year’s Royal Melbourne Show, the ladies took their efforts online, creating a Scone Challenge and sold a staggering 11,000 scones to friends, family and neighbours. “We are more than just scones,” Dewar laughs. “But scones have brought us a lot of money over the years and I think the Scone Challenge might be one COVID-19 initiative we’ll keep.” Although the much-loved Christmas Fair at Umina can’t take place this year, cars will be lined up along Lansell Road for one last tinsel-topped treat before Santa arrives. Move over Maccas, it’s drive-through Christmas cake, shortbread and plum pudding. Once the last of the mince pies are sold, Dewar will head home to South Gippsland. She’s been bunkered down at Umina steering this wonderful ark of energetic women since the lockdown began. “It’s been an extraordinary year and it will be lovely getting home,” she says. “I think COVID-19 has perhaps tapped something within us all that we didn’t know we had.” ●

Shedding the cost COVER STORY Model and filmmaker

Rhys Uhlich has created his family’s dream home on Phillip Island for $100,000.

A

fter living in the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles for two years with his wife and two children, Australian model, fashion designer and filmmaker Rhys Uhlich knew it was time to come home to a simpler, quieter life. Growing up not far from the surf of Phillip Island, Uhlich – who first came to prominence in 2008 as the winner of the Jennifer Hawkins-hosted reality show Make Me A Supermodel – longed to bring his family back to the beach. He planned to build his dream home – not a multimillion-dollar mansion, but a shed-style house – with a very tight budget of $100,000. His wife Claire and their daughters, 10-year-old Indah and six-year-old Mahli, would be there every step of the way during this do-it-yourself, homebuilding experiment. Uhlich’s shed home is an affordable haven in these tough economic times. It has also been built to be sustainable. Before moving to the US the couple bought the block of land in the Phillip Island suburb of Silverleaves as a back-up plan for their return from chasing the LA dream. “Living in America isn’t cheap, so when we came home we had a certain amount of money left. We thought, what should we do with what we have left?” Uhlich says. “We wanted to try and avoid being a slave to the mortgage system as much as possible and have the freedom to live the life we want.

“This is about breaking down those perceptions and showing that if you want to build a home, you can potentially afford it.” RHYS UHLICH

“That is where the idea was born out of. I’ve always loved the idea of barns and sheds and thought it would be a fun and liberating place to live in. “We had the block of land but no shed, but I think a lot of modern architecture is built around shed and barn design, so basically I went straight to the source and found a shed company.” After getting council approval to build in May, Uhlich started to work. The home is 120 square metres and has three bedrooms in two lofts, and a huge open-plan living space. The black Colorbond steel shed was bought from West Gippsland Sheds and Uhlich engaged local Phillip Island company Studio Blakemore to design the interior. Caple Builders helped with the construction. “You have to be very adaptable,” he says. “I wanted to go with a regular shed build, but the trick was to choose the right colours and the right windows to make it look less like a shed and more like architectural build. “All I did was pay for the engineering and get it up to a residential standard. “It was also important for me that whatever steel we didn’t use in the build, we would re-use it somewhere else.” Uhlich had also spent a lot of time living in Bali, watching how the local Balinese community are so resourceful in how they build their homes. With this in mind, he made sure that most of the

furnishings in the home come from recycled, unused building materials. “Every window and door in the place I got off Facebook marketplace,” he says. “I drove halfway around Victoria picking up all these discarded windows with double-glazed timber, and you would be surprised how much is out there from new builds that don’t get used and are left over. “I designed the whole build from what I found. “I also have got friends in the building industry so I said to them, anytime you pull down an old house and there is leftover hard wood, drop it off. “I will make a lot of furniture out of that. “For example, using recycled pallets to make our kitchen. It all sounds very rustic but I am going for a finish that is quite aesthetically pleasing, but it’s all about how you do it.” Uhlich wanted to build something that wasn’t going to cost a fortune, a difficult task when looking at the options available. “For me I didn’t have at least $400,000 for the build so I wanted to explore this option,” he said. “There is a market for a $100,000 to $150,000 build but I couldn’t find one. “This is about breaking down those perceptions and showing that if you want to build a home, you can potentially afford it.” Uhlich wants this unique home to be something the family live in for a long time, and be proud of. “I think of the homes I went into as a kid, the ones that were built by a family have a story to tell,” he says. “That is something that really stuck with me. “I wanted our home to have a soul. “We were really close to going down the normal building route but I’ve always thought I didn’t want to regret anything, so I’m glad we went down this route. “My kids are enjoying it too, we want to make this a fun house.” Since his reality show days, Uhlich has run his own fashion label Tevita and now broadcast production and content company Tevita Film, which has offices in Los Angeles and Phillip Island. Right now Uhlich is throwing all he has at making a home which is everything his family has dreamed of. ●

ust two-and-a-half hours north-east of Hobart, along the twists and turns of the Great Eastern Drive, lies an idyllic getaway that will put every visitor at one with nature. Freycinet Lodge, nestled in Freycinet National Park, is one of many jewels of Tasmania’s east coast. The area is home to destinations such as Wineglass Bay and Honeymoon Bay, and Freycinet Lodge overlooks Great Oyster Bay and The Hazards mountain range.

Stay Freycinet Lodge’s design-driven accommodation, including eco-friendly cabins and water or tree-view pavilions, cater for a variety of travellers and occasions, whether it be a romantic getaway, a family break or some much-needed R&R. The newly designed Coastal Pavilions bridge the gap between nature and comfort. As you step into a pavilion’s pod-like design, you’ll be immediately immersed in the surrounding wilderness. The pavilions’ design was completed by Hobartbased Liminal Studio and has won several accolades for its brilliance. “The Coastal Pavilions provide indulgences through simple pleasures rather than grandiose gestures. They take their cue from the fluidity, layering and interplay of the coastal bays,” Liminal Studio architect and co-founding director Peta Heffernan says. “We hope that guests are uplifted by the way the architecture supports and enhances their experience. We are very conscious of creating environments that enable the user to connect with place and enjoy out-of-the-ordinary experiences.”

Fascinating Freycinet Eat Freycinet Lodge offers many options, including exquisite fine-dining at The Bay Restaurant. Head chef Roy Lin has carefully curated a menu to entice all the senses. Consistently rated as one of the east coast’s best restaurants, it offers outstanding seafood such as freshly shucked oysters by local Melshell Oysters, seared Tasmanian scallops or the fish of the day, which is caught locally.

ALASTAIR BETT

Explore Honeymoon Bay is a short walk from the lodge and has stunning views of the sapphire-coloured water and The Hazards mountains. The aptly named beach is the perfect spot for a romantic picnic. This track will take you between one-and-a-half to two hours to reach the lookout

point and return. The lookout gives you panoramic views of Wineglass Bay, one of the world’s most famously picturesque beaches.

Experience Should nature walks and beach hikes not appeal, there are plenty of other attractions in the area. A visit to Devil’s Corner Cellar Door is a 30-minute drive away and features some of Australia’s most recognised red and white wine varietals. Tuck in with a glass of the awarded Devil’s Corner pinot noir and a woodfired pizza as you enjoy the views of the vineyard and beyond. ● For updates and more details on Freycinet Lodge’s COVID-response, restaurant opening times, safety standards and Tasmanian Health Service information, visit the lodge’s website. ● freycinetlodge.com.au

n primary school, we’re taught to be super sun smart. We sing along to catchy tunes of an animated seagull telling us to “slip, slop, slap”. We pack our legionnaires hats in our school bags before we pack our lunch because we understand no hat equals no play. We smear sunscreen on our faces like it’s Vegemite hitting the white bread sandwich we smash as soon as we arrive home after school. But for some of us, as we get older, our sun smart due diligence fades like a sun-bleached beach towel. Along with the 101 other things in our morning routine, sunscreen can feel like a bit of a chore. Sure we wear it when we hit the beach, but it’s not as ingrained as that first cup of coffee. However, Ava Matthews and Bec Jefferd have made it their mission to make SPF part of our every day.

The pair co-founded and launched their Australian-made, SPF/skincare business Ultra Violette in January 2018. Matthews and Jefferd met while working as beauty product developers at Mecca and quickly segued to friendship. They’d share hypothetical business ideas over coffee until they couldn’t shake one off: starting their own SPF label. “We heard from a lot of customers and people on a quest to find the holy grail of SPF, and you don’t talk that passionately about something unless it’s a really big problem and we wanted to solve that problem,” Jefferd says. The pair gave themselves a six-month deadline to research and make a business plan to see if they could turn the hypothetical into reality. Both wanted to redefine what SPF could be: they

didn’t want it to be an afterthought, they wanted it to be at the core of one’s skincare regime. “We didn’t want it to feel like a beach or a holiday product, it needed to feel like an everyday skincare product that sat on your shelf rather than in your beach bag ... we wanted Ultra Violette to feel like a daily part of your skincare routine,” Matthews says. After a rigorous development and testing period that adhered to and passed Australia’s strict SPF regulations, Ultra Violette was ready for its debut. “In Australia, you want an SPF that’s been made and tested here because SPF products have to work a lot harder here,” Jefferd says of Australia’s climate and UV levels and their locally-made range. Before their launch with a warehouse full of product, the nerves started to kick in. “You can obviously dream and hope it will be successful, but it’s quite terrifying. Ava and I had conversations before we launched about what if no one buys it? We’re going to have a warehouse full of SPF products that we’ll have to wear until they expire,” Jefferd laughs. But the opposite happened when they did a soft

launch, and everything sold out in less than 24 hours. From then it was game on, with stockists now including Adore Beauty and Sephora. This year Ultra Violette debuted overseas, launching in Hong Kong; next year, it will be sold on global luxury e-boutique Net-a-Porter. While powerfully protecting the skin, the success of Ultra Violette is also due to its lightweight feel. “Coming from a beauty background it was really important to us that we got the texture right, it doesn’t feel like a thick traditional sunscreen, there’s no whitening on your skin, and it gives you a little bit of a glow,” Matthews says. And if you’re anti-glow? They’ve got you covered with what they call a “wardrobe of choice” of SPF facial products that range from sunscreens, serums and gels designed to wear with or without make-up, as well as SPF lotions for the body and hands, and a tinted collection of glossy lip balms. Ultra Violette could just be the SPF that becomes a must not only for summer but for all seasons. ● ● ultraviolette.com.au

Arcade-style glazing will bring the art deco facade to life and connect the street with the bar, lobby and restaurants inside. The development includes 54 one, two and threebedroom apartments across eight levels with developer Gurner’s first foray into luxury boutique hotels, the Veriu Collingwood Hotel, complementing the residences. Occupants will have access to the hotel’s facilities including concierge, housekeeping, a New York-style bar, and a boardroom. esigned to set a new standard of sophistication in apartment living, Provenance Camberwell also allows buyers to further personalise homes. With construction starting soon, there’s a final chance to tweak colour schemes, layouts and finishes in the boutique Toorak Road project. This luxe project from developer Beulah allows purchasers to transition to house-sized residences with generous floor plans and limited neighbours. Beulah has worked with acclaimed architects Elenberg Fraser to create internal layouts of up to 296 square metres in a three-level building of just 12 residences. Six apartments have private lobbies. The two penthouses feature double-sided fireplaces that form functional art; multi-function spaces provide opportunities to further tailor home environments. “Before our display closes on December 13 for construction, we urge all interested parties to come and experience first-hand the luxury finishes and premium materials that make this project so unique,” says Beulah development manager Chris Hatcher. ● LIZ McLACHLAN

FEATURE HOUSE KEW \ 6 HILLCREST AVENUE 5

As sleek as a stiletto knife and just as sharp, this new house designed by Herbert & Howes cuts a dash in a sweetly traditional avenue. And whoever becomes its first owner is likely to do so via a traditional method – pester power. Teenagers will see this and set up a collective whine: “Aww, mum! Check out the pool! And the theatre! And this awesome five-car garage! You don’t want us roaming the streets, do you? So we can skate in here, can’t we …?” All this and a quick trip to several private schools; departure 10 minutes before class time might be do-able. Roaming family members will have an easy stroll to Kew Junction and Victoria Park. The ground floor has all a contemporary buyer would require. At the front are a home office, a sitting room (fireplace) and a guest bedroom with a twin en suite. The central hall has a lift that serves all three levels, and a powder room. The open-plan living and dining area gleams with pale European oak flooring below full-length windows. Pull back the sliders to the barbecue terrace overlooking the fully-tiled saltwater pool and spa. The kitchen, cool in Grey Tundra marble, has Miele twin ovens, steamer and microwave, an integrated fridge-freezer and a second dishwasher just for glassware. The butler’s pantry has a second cooktop, and the laundry has Miele appliances. The carpeted first floor (via lift or stairs) opens with a central retreat. To the front are two double bedrooms (wardrobes) that share a bathroom with twin basins, bath

and shower. A third bedroom, off the retreat, has a walk-in wardrobe and a shower en suite.

“THIS MODERN MASTERPIECE IS THE PINNACLE OF MULTI-LEVEL FAMILY

Actually, parents might pester each other when they see the main suite; it has a spectacular dressing room with a desk and mirror, and a marble en suite with a free-standing bath and glass shower. Don’t forget the basement, because the kids won’t. The gym, climate-controlled wine store and potential cinema (plus powder room) await the leisurely moments. The property has climate control and CCTV security. ● ALISON BARCLAY property@domainreview.com.au Agent: Jellis Craig, Campbell Ward 0402 124 939 Price: $5.8 million-$6.3 million Auction: 6.30pm, December 16

Offered for sale for the first time in 80 years, this pictureperfect house is a treasure of the Stonnington Estate. Architect Charles N. “Nev” Hollinshed came straight from renovating a city theatre to designing this in 1935, hence the dramatic interior – the steep cathedral ceilings, mullioned windows and polished timber doors and joinery are hallmarks of his arts and crafts style. The ground floor has four beautiful communal areas, notably the big bay living room (fireplace) and fitted study. The dining room opens to a front terrace and to the garden. The cathedral theme continues in the 1980s extension, where arched windows rise above the family-meals area. There’s a ground-floor bedroom and bathroom. Upstairs, three double bedrooms share a walk-in wardrobe and gold-tiled 1930s bathroom, while a garage and store room occupy the lower ground floor. ● ALISON BARCLAY Agent: Kay & Burton, Nicole Gleeson 0414 809 221 Price: $3.8 million-$4.15 million Expressions of interest: close December 15

If you had to pinpoint the best address in St Kilda, Herbert Street – opposite the Botanical Gardens, walkable to the beach yet far from the noise – would be a contender for first place. This penthouse atop the Ivy complex has a Milky Way panorama from its terrace, which at 39 square metres is party-perfect for full-moon gatherings. Porcelain tiles give a neat finish to the living room and dine-in Miele kitchen. Of the three bedrooms, the largest opens to the terrace and is set up as an office. The others have an en suite or adjacent bathroom, both with glamorous Bisazza mosaic showers. The concealed laundry, Bang and Olufsen sound system, basement parking, intercom security and lift access complete an enviable piece of modern luxe. ● ALISON BARCLAY

A secret terrace on the roof is the crowning glory of Auvergne. Built in the 1890s and magnificently renovated, the striking Victorian – between Albert Park Lake and the beach, in the Albert Park College zone – is now one of the neighbourhood’s finest properties. The two-storey house has been largely rebuilt behind its arched facade, and is an artful blend of old and new. Wide oak floorboards grace the adjoining living and dining rooms at the front. The marble, Miele-equipped kitchen (dual ovens) and sunbathed family area open to a landscaped courtyard garden with lane access. Take the floating timber staircase to three firstfloor bedrooms; the zoned main has a dressing room and en suite. The rooftop terrace has a kitchenette and powder room. ● ALISON BARCLAY
