When judge Andy Allen winces in sympathy for a contestant sobbing into a rubbery risotto on MasterChef, the compassion is real. He’s been there. His first dish on the 2012 season (which he won) was a flop, but he stepped up and has since kept that warm, humble approach in his nature and food. Melburnians who love his cooking, his delightful turn on MasterChef and eating at his Three Blue Ducks in Sydney, Brisbane and Byron Bay can enjoy the menu closer to home with his restaurant opening at a Melbourne surf park. Allen is our cover star for this last edition of 2020. ●

A dicey start as a MasterChef contestant steeled Andy Allen for success in the kitchen, in business and on camera.
A
ndy Allen will never forget the first dish he cooked on MasterChef. It was season four of the television juggernaut and the contestants were given a mystery box challenge, a terrifying task for the newcomers who were expected to plate up a mouth-watering dish from a bunch of unknown and random ingredients; but this time the box was empty. “There was nothing except a mirror inside, so we opened the box and we were staring back at ourselves,” says Allen, explaining that the idea was to cook “you on a plate”, a dish that gave a glimpse into the contestant’s background and personality. The then 23-year-old apprentice electrician from Maitland, NSW, admits he hadn’t actually done much cooking before MasterChef, so he tapped into the memories of childhood days spent spearfishing with his family at their Fingal Bay holiday home. “I thought seafood was the logical thing for me, so I chose scallops,” he says, bursting out laughing as he confesses: “They were disgraceful. I cooked the bejesus out of them, they were truly terrible. “I remember the judge Gary Mehigan saying to me, ‘Mate, if you’re going to cook like this, you’re not going to last the competition’. In the end, it was good because it spurred me on and I knew I had to work harder to win.” Amazingly, those disastrous scallops propelled Allen to claim the MasterChef crown, and life has come full circle since. Now a star of the mega-hit show, with fellow judges Melissa Leong and Jock Zonfrillo, Allen is the wunderkind of the food world, creating an empire estimated to be worth $5 million. Today, he’s squeezing out time during filming of the new series to have a chat about his latest venture, Three Blue Ducks at URBNSURF, Australia’s first surf park, at Tullamarine. The 350-seat surf and sustainability-inspired restaurant will showcase the best of local produce, and is the latest venture for the hugely successful “Ducks” partnership, which now has seven signature venues in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, inspired by its iconic restaurant in Byron Bay. “The conversation with URBNSURF started a couple of years ago. We loved the concept but the waves really were the catalyst. We love our waves and we knew the surf had to be good or people wouldn’t come,” Allen says. “The waves are amazing and you can actually
6

walk all the way around the pool, you can be a metre away from where the waves are breaking. It’s a really great scene to be at, it’s so enjoyable, you are totally immersed in this surf experience and we knew this was right for us.” The Three Ducks team has created a venue with a broad offering and all of the touches that have made their restaurants must-visit. “Our Byron restaurant offers takeaway, too, the idea was that when the restaurant was full you could go and get a Portuguese tart, a coffee or a croissant and walk out through the farm and still have an enjoyable experience and that has worked really well for us, so we’ve mimicked that experience at the wave pool,” Allen says. “We have a coal pit, we’ll do things like prawns and seafood and we’ll have all of our sweet range for more casual diners who just want to grab something and get out on the water and be amongst it.” In some ways, the COVID-19 pandemic was a blessing for Allen and his partners as it delayed their launch. In hindsight, if they’d opened at the beginning of the year, Allen’s doubtful whether the business would have survived. “It’s a large venue and once you start that machine like that, it costs a lot to stop it. We were lucky that we were still able to tick along with the building and get it ready behind the scenes. Then, as soon as the borders were open, we were able to get down and finish it all.” It’s been an extraordinary rise to success for the now 32-year-old, who landed an audition for MasterChef after a mate dared him 500 bucks to fill out the application. Before that, the apprentice electrician, who was just weeks away from graduating, had never followed a recipe, let alone opened a cookbook. Much to his mum Marie’s chagrin, Allen wagged his final electrical exam to go to the auditions. “The auditions were so daunting,” he recalls. “Especially after I made it through the first few rounds. “They asked our parents to come down to Melbourne to help cull from 100 contestants to the top 24. Mum and I were sitting on a bus getting ready to go to filming and there was a couple behind us chatting about food. They were talking big food language, phrases and terminology I’d never heard.
“I still to this day have no idea what they were talking about,” he laughs. “Mum was eavesdropping too and she looked at me with raised eyebrows and was like, ‘Andy what have you done? You’re going to embarrass yourself on national television!’ So, that then became my driving goal, don’t embarrass yourself on national television.” Seven restaurants, a television series, books, multimillion-dollar endorsement deals and a gig on one of the world’s biggest television shows later, “and mum still suggests that maybe I should go back and get my electrical certificate to have something to fall back on, just in case”, he laughs. Diners at Three Blue Ducks at URBNSURF will spot Allen from time to time in between his MasterChef commitments, but first he’s looking forward to a well-earned Christmas break with
fiancee Alex Davey in the Whitsundays. They have been separated for much of the year with Allen in Melbourne filming and Davey in Sydney working. He’s planning long lazy days cooking for Davey and her family to make up for lost time. “I’ve already given Alex’s mum a shopping list and I’ll spend the whole time pottering around cooking. That’s where I enjoy being. We worked out we’ve spent nine months of this year apart, I can’t wait to get to the Whitsundays just to have that time together.” ● Bookings for Three Blue Ducks at URBNSURF ● threeblueducks.com ● urbnsurf.com

FEATURE HOUSE BALWYN \ 2/80 WINMALEE ROAD 4

When families talk about Balwyn, they can’t resist dropping the Z-word. “So, are you … in the zone?” “Ooh, yeah,” say the denizens of Winmalee Road, happy in the knowledge that the tiny zone of Balwyn High School – from which some Balwyn streets are excluded – still embraces them. “And, um, Greythorn Primary?” “That, too.” Having got the geography just right, this two-storey townhouse is in every other aspect just what a school-aged family yearns for. Smartly presented, with formal and casual living areas opening to a landscaped garden, it has room to flex as a household grows. Note the second bedroom next to the ground-floor main suite – this can be a nursery, study, guest room or grandparents’ accommodation as life requires. The kids can enjoy their own zone (that word again) upstairs, where two bedrooms share a retreat and a bathroom. Light, bright, with polished parquetry and stone finishes, this place promises enduring good looks with little fuss. The house is the rear of two and has a double garage. The side porch leads to a foyer with a powder room. To the left, the main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and a white en suite. The second bedroom, off the foyer, has a wardrobe. Hosts with the most will admire the living and dining room, elegant in grey carpet below full-length windows. This room and the parquet family area have french doors to the covered terrace and its plumbed barbecue.
