When it was announced that the much-loved music quiz show Spicks and Specks would return to our screens this year, I could barely contain my excitement. Yes, I’m one of those self-professed music buffs who yells out the answers smugly and with gusto – much to the disdain of my family. I’m even more excited about this week’s cover star Adam Hills, who talks about the return of the show and shooting it during lockdown. This is also my last edition as editor for a while, as I’m heading off on maternity leave – but the team will keep bringing you the best of Melbourne in my absence.  ●

ike everyone, we had no idea what was coming. Last time I spoke to comedian and presenter Adam Hills, in February 2020, he was stepping out of a London cab, excited about returning home to Yarraville to see his wife and two young daughters, while putting the finishing touches on his new stand-up show about to hit the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Hills joked about living in Crouch End, a northLondon suburb best known for 1990s Bob Dylan sightings and providing the setting for a Stephen King horror story. He talked about his showbiz neighbours, including three Doctors Who: David Tennant, Peter Capaldi and the latest regeneration, Jodie Whittaker, whom he got to know at their daughters’ dance class. He talked about Brexit, the UK’s protracted, hand-wringing departure from the European Union, and how politically polarised people had

beloved ABC music quiz show Spicks and Specks, which returns to screens on April 18. Recorded in September, in the darkest days of the Melbourne lockdown, the episodes reflect a time in our city’s life that many of us are still processing. There was no live audience and, due to travel restrictions, regular team captains Myf Warhurst and Alan Brough were joined by Melbourne-based musicians and comedians only. The first time a band (The Teskey Brothers, Hills thinks it was) played live in the studio for a rehearsal was emotional for everybody, he says. “Everyone had tears in their eyes. I’m choking up talking about it now. Because we realised that none of us had seen live music for six, eight months. And, these [musicians] hadn’t been out of the house in that long. And, I mean, I don’t know how they rehearsed because they weren’t able to get into a room together.”

to show off new Indigenous talent to Australia was a real treat. It felt a real honour to be part of that.” Later this year, Hills is heading back to London where he will likely cover the Tokyo Paralympics. He’ll also be busy as an official ambassador for the Rugby League World Cup, which kicks off in October (Hills, who was born without a right foot and wears a prosthesis, has been a long-time, passionate player with the Warrington Wolves in the English Physical Disability Rugby League). He is labouring on the third draft of his first children’s book, a story about a couple of teenage rock-star detectives, inspired by the career dreams of one of his daughters. “I’m so clueless about writing a book that I think that’s why I’ve got so much work to do on draft three. I think I sent in draft one and they went, ‘Oh, my God, this guy doesn’t know what he’s doing!’ Basically, there’s a nice story there that needs some serious polishing.”

“To be able to show off new Indigenous talent to Australia was a real treat. It felt a real honour to be part of that.” become. He talked about the ill-timed television commercial he did with Kylie Minogue spruiking Australia to the Brits that was pulled on Boxing Day as 19 million hectares of the country burned in unprecedented wildfire. But then the pandemic hit. The comedy festival was cancelled, and the world turned upside down. “I was incredibly lucky,” says Hills, now. Speaking to me by phone just a few days away from completing two weeks in Melbourne hotel quarantine, he explains how he was able to record the season finale of his long-running, late-night comedy television show The Last Leg before things took a turn for the worse. “I flew out on March 21 and London went into lockdown on March 23. I got out just in time.” Hills spent seven months at home, enduring most of the Melbourne lockdown and recording five episodes of The Last Leg live from his garage. “I ended up having to stay up all night on a Friday and rehearse at three in the morning until 5am, and then do the show from seven. It kind of killed me.” Before returning to London in October, though, Hills was able to record 10 episodes as host of the

In fact, each time the show had live music on set was special, says Hills. “You could feel the hair stand up, or the goosebumps. Live music is such an emotional and visceral and physical thing that you kind of forget about it. You battle on without it. I hope that comes across on screen, because people will watch it in April and the world’s kind of gone back to some semi-normal. But if you are watching, just imagine that every musician was in the middle of a really strict Melbourne lockdown, and was just so happy to be out of the house and performing.” To make up for a lack of interstate and international guests the producers looked locally for talent, which Hills says turned out to be a boon for the show. “We kind of were going through a period in Melbourne and in Australia, and we still are, of really strong Indigenous talent. So, we ended up with people like Mitch Tambo, Isaiah Firebrace, Alice Skye and Scott Darlow all making appearances and it felt like a real moment. And that’s what’s so great about Spicks and Specks: just showing off new music to Australia. And, to be able

Back in Melbourne, comedy’s “Mr Nice Guy” is relishing returning to the comedy festival stage with his stand-up show Shoes Half Full. He’s also mindful that the pandemic has affected comedians disproportionately, noting that those who were established like himself almost welcomed a year off from touring and the opportunity to spend more time with family. “But for the-up-and-comers, the people who are just finding their feet, they’re the ones that have really struggled over the last year,” he says. “So, I would say, more than ever, if [you’re] going to the comedy festival, take a chance on an up-and-comer. Because you’re not just giving them 20 bucks in the hope that they’re going to be funny. It’s almost like a back payment for what they’ve just gone through for the past 12 months.”  ● SHOES HALF FULL \ Adam Hills’ stand-up show is on at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival until April 18. THEATRE Long forgotten in her hometown, a new play brings Coral Browne to centre stage again. JA N E R O C CA

ootscray-born actress and screen star Coral Browne left Australia in the 1930s to pursue a theatre career abroad, and a decade later she was the third-highest-paid actress in London’s West End. During her career, Browne wooed photographer and My Fair Lady costume designer Cecil Beaton and had a hit in the 1968 movie The Killing of Sister George – in the first-ever lesbian love scene. She even later appeared in Dame Judi Dench’s biography. And now she is the subject of a new stage play – brought to life by English-Australian actress Amanda Muggleton. Coral Browne: This F**king Lady makes its debut at the Brunswick Ballroom in the capable hands of Muggleton — best known for her TV work in Prisoner — who dazzles with a sultry storyline and laughs aplenty. “It’s a difficult title to sell, but I want to impress on people it’s not all to do with bad language and sex – although she did have a lot of lovers,” Muggleton says. Born in 1913, Browne started out as a stage designer in the 1931 production of John Galsworthy’s The Roof and, when the lead actress fell

The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone, 1961, with Warren Beatty, Coral Browne and Vivien Leigh at Pinewood Studios, above; Amanda Muggleton, left.

A star is reborn By the age of 21, Browne had arrived in London and became a star. In 1934, she appeared alongside Edith Evans and American actor Paul Robeson. By the 1940s she was dominating the West End.

“She went to London with a plummy English accent and could turn that off and become ocker.” ill, Browne took her place. Soon after she was offered a contract with theatrical management company J.C. Williamson and began appearing in plays around Australia, but it was Melbourne director and mentor Gregan McMahon who encouraged her to try her luck in London.

Known for her sharp wit and elegance as well as a potty mouth, Browne adored designer clothes and asked fashion photographer Helmut Newton to take a few black and white photographs. Those classic 1989 images include ones alongside her last husband — American horror

actor Vincent Price — taken a few years before she died in Los Angeles. A portrait of Browne can be found at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. “There was no bullshit about Coral,” says Muggleton. “She went to London with a plummy English accent and could turn that off and become ocker. Back then women didn’t swear, but when she said f--this and f--- that, they loved it because it was so natural to her. “Coral was great friends with Maggie Smith, worked with Judi Dench and Laurence Olivier – she was surrounded by theatre royalty. People have forgotten her in her hometown of Melbourne and I am thrilled I get another chance to tell her story,” she says.

Muggleton works alongside her friend of 50 years, director Nadia Tass, with whom she is living in Melbourne. “We worked on the play Antigone together, we did Prisoner. She was the first friend I ever made when I arrived in Melbourne,” Muggleton. “To be able to come back to the stage and do this one-woman play and discuss an amazing woman who was fun, naughty and full of colour is a real privilege. It’ll appeal to all ages, a celebration of a fabulous woman who is from Australia who took on the world,” she says. Muggleton says it was the risque way Browne lived her life that makes for the best stage banter. “She married British actor Philip Pearman, a gay man, and they were blissfully happy for 14 years. She was the most extraordinary woman.” “She was ahead of her time in so many ways – sexually and careerwise – a reason to really celebrate her story.”  ● CORAL BROWNE: THIS F**KING LADY \ Until April 18 at the Brunswick Ballroom. ● moshtix.com.au

STREETS OF OUR TOWN

Gertrude Street Fabulous Fitzroy features Melbourne’s early history and a touch of hipster.

People come from far and wide to get a glimpse of Gertrude Street. Along the strip between Napier and Smith streets are some of the city’s most chic designer stores, eateries, boutiques and bars, drawing visitors in for a look at the sophisticated grunge so tied up in Fitzroy’s wonder. Not only does this little strip show off gorgeous architecture, there’s also vibrant street art and other art installations on display. On Little Napier Street a mural highlights the First Nations history of the area, the Wurundjeri-Willum traditional owners of the land. It is impressive to see in person. Gertrude Street’s history is rich and fascinating. In the 1850s it began as a residential and commercial precinct and, after

rough years during the depression, it was invigorated again in the 1960s by post-war migration. Looking up and around, you’ll see Victorian terraces, Georgian-style facades, art nouveau, Queen Anne gables and more. The gentrification of the street would surprise its earlier inhabitants, but now the glassy shopfronts and minimalist interiors are reminiscent of a Parisian shopping strip. Gertrude Street truly is the creme de la creme if you want to meander through some of Melbourne’s iconic, beautiful streets for some sought-after food and shopping.

OUR TOP TIP Head to the Australian Print Workshop to see some art. The exhibitions vary in focus throughout the year, with the current exhibition, Disparate Chapters by Benjamin Armstrong, running until April 24. The gallery is open Wednesday

to Saturday, 10am-5pm. WHAT WILL YOU FIND THERE?

I begin by making a beeline to Megan Park clothing store, one of the city’s greatest fashion exports and a drawcard to this strip. The shopfront is classy and boasts a massive, ornately designed brass door handle. The white interior of the shop makes the clothing stand out bold and brightly coloured, a real feature of this design. Shop assistant Helena Murray says it is so eclectic along Gertrude Street, which is why people come from all over. “There’s so many beautiful brands and boutiques, there’s always something different to discover, and something new,” she says.

Farther towards Smith Street is About Space lighting store, luminescent and cutting edge. Wandering through this shop is like visiting a gallery exhibition. It’s worth walking around the shop, fantasising about where else you might fit a funky light. Archie’s All Day is a great for a coffee and a bite. There’s such a great atmosphere I want to take a seat and enjoy a few hours reading a book. Farther up at the Builders Arms, I am pleasantly surprised by the combination of old and new. The front bar looks like an old pub and the back is a sleek bistro. This is ideal for drinks after work or a serious sit-down meal.  ●

uburn village is one of Melbourne’s favourite hidden gems; a thriving Parisian-style precinct of artisanal wares, heritage shopfronts and chic cafes spilling onto sidewalks. On the edge of the village, this new seven-storey development is designed with sensitivity to the heritage-listed church and homes that surround it. Co-Lab Residential director Daniel Cashen says Auborn Lane is a rarity – a boutique building of just 20 apartments with height. The six half-floor residences on levels three to five and the full-floor penthouse all offer stunning city views. “Auborn Lane is an exceptional mix of connectivity, design and location.” Architects Rothelowman have balanced history and modern aspirations, siting the building comfortably in its historic neighbourhood while providing luxe living within. Bluestone lanes border two sides of the building which also incorporates a colonnaded lane to the adjacent churchyard. Twelve of the apartments have three-bedroom layouts; all have two bathrooms and two basement car spaces and storage.  ●  LIZ McLACHLAN IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

HOUSE OF THE WEEK HAWTHORN \ 54A KOOYONGKOOT ROAD 4

After 15 years of happiness in his home, the co-owner of this distinctive abode now has a massive complaint. “It’s the space,” he mock-moans about architect Bruce Henderson’s three-level design, which stands high on Scotch Hill in one of Hawthorn’s most illustrious streets. “Our view is that once you’ve lived here it spoils you for any other property. Everywhere else feels small in comparison.” Chief of the spoilers is the garage of some 268 square metres, which he chose to lavish on kids, not cars. “Over the years it has been an indoor sports stadium, especially in wet weather when we’d play handball and ride bikes in there. Our children grew up and got cars and the garage could accommodate all that, and a workshop too.” Henderson designed both the houses at No. 54 and kept this one, built about 2000, for himself. It is hidden at the rear in a north-facing garden with a solar-heated pool. An open-plan family-meals area is complemented by a dining room and a study, both with bay windows. The bedrooms make for a pleasant generation gap: Parents bask in a ground-floor suite while kids are dispatched to their own zone upstairs, where a retreat and three bedrooms (all with en suites and balcony access) let them make merry in freedom. As the architect’s own home there’s an attention to detail that captivated the current owners, who bought it in 2006 after a year-long house hunt. “We walked in and immediately noticed the Asian flair,” the co-owner says. “There are Japanese-style pillars along the hallway, solid timber doors throughout and the full-length windows have long timber mullions like you see in traditional Japanese houses. “It’s a house you feel comfortable in right away. The kitchen and family area, which is oriented north, has been our favourite go-to place because it has a very high ceiling and is full of light. We renovated the kitchen, which now has an island bench and has been brought into the current era.” The house has a powder room, laundry and storerooms. It also has excellent security – critical in a neighbourhood favoured by travel-loving families and executives. ● ALISON BARCLAY property@domainreview.com.au Agent: Kay & Burton, Oliver Booth 0413 975 723 Price: $6.3 million-$6.9 million Expressions of interest: close noon, May 10

Of all the cycles of fashion, parquetry must have the longest. King Louis XIV introduced a criss-cross style of oak parquetry to Versailles in the 1680s; it’s now back in vogue and looking chic in this modern manor, where French style meets fresh air and a practical floor plan.
