As a big fan of our Australian entertainment industry, it’s been particularly pleasing to see how local TV productions have been able to rebound from the setbacks of last year, or find workarounds. This week’s cover star, renowned screen and stage performer Lisa McCune, discusses how returning to work gave her purpose and how, despite being a self-described fish out of water in a comedy show, she’s loving the change of scene. And I find her approach to giving anything a go particularly encouraging during a year in which so many of us are taking stock and rebuilding. ●

inema legend Bruce Beresford has seen so many Macbeth plays he’s lost count, but the one that made the biggest impression was the black-and-white film starring and directed by Orson Welles he watched in 1950, aged 10. Beresford takes a cue from the historic drama/war picture for his adaptation of Verdi’s Macbeth for Melbourne Opera – setting the scene in Scotland as Welles did. And, in the hands of Beresford, the operatic punchline lies in his delivery of blood, gore, murder and revenge. “I originally thought we’d set this in Nazi Germany or fascist Italy, where most operas are set, but it was all a bit cliche so I avoided it,” says Beresford, best known for directing films such as Driving Miss Daisy, Ladies in Black and Paradise Lost. “The place to set Macbeth is where it’s set – in 11th-century Scotland – and it really does give it a very wild, primitive look which is so much better for the drama. I really play into that notion with the opera. “What excites me most about directing an opera is that it is quite different to making a film. There’s no pastes of close-up scenes or anything like that, it’s got to be thought of as one cinematic experience you’re taking in all at once.” Beresford, who has been directing operas since 1986, works alongside conductor Greg Hocking and a 60-strong Melbourne opera chorus that has been rehearsing most evenings at Her Majesty’s Theatre. The opera brings three stage favourites out for the occasion – Helena Dix [who nearly died from COVID in London in April last year], Simon Meadows and Sam Sakker. The final performance on May 26 will be broadcast live in virtual reality, giving viewers a chance to experience Shakespeare’s drama up close and personal from home. Beresford, 80, didn’t let COVID slow his creative processes down last year. He worked on a short film about forgotten painters from Mildura – Sir William Orpen and Sir Frank Brangwyn, whose works he saw for the first time in London in the 1970s – and wrote several film scripts, too. He says he should be in the US working on his feature film about singer Glen Campbell, who died in 2017. “There are plans to head there later this year and start filming,” Beresford says. “Glenn Campbell wrote so many great songs. I am excited about this film. If COVID hadn’t happened we would have made it a year ago.” For someone who has made more than 30 films, and won an Academy Award in 1989 for Driving Miss Daisy, the desire to keep making films is as strong as ever. He is also working with playwright David Williamson on a film about Isaac Newton. “I keep getting asked to do things, which is great, and I still get film offers from America so I’ll keep saying yes because I am fit and well.” ●

COVER STORY
Something to smile about The world of comedy is proving to be Lisa McCune’s happy place.
I
t was during daily pre-dawn drives to Coburg from her bayside home that Lisa McCune got her acting groove back. Those 5am work starts – to film a new season of the comedy How to Stay Married – were the first time since last year’s double lockdown that she left the house for business. “I really am a fish out of water doing comedy,” says McCune. “But I love to explore something new. I’m the sort of person who will give anything a go.” The Network 10 show is filmed inside an architect-owned home in Coburg, which McCune likens to a Brady Bunch home equivalent, and it’s this setting the fictitious Butler family use as their backdrop. It’s where she delivers the deadpan punchlines as Em, an anxious mother of two married to Greg [Peter Helliar] for 15 years.

It’s a stark change from the world of theatre which audiences are used to seeing McCune shine in, from starring in plays and musicals such as The Sound of Music, Hamlet and The King and I. But she’s enjoying dabbling in comedy and, for now, it’s where the work is. “I remember when Pete rang to tell me we could go ahead with season two. I was like, ‘Yes, count me in, mate,’” says McCune, sounding more Em than herself. “Being on set was so joyful. Everybody was happy to be there; nobody was whinging because we were excited to be back doing something we love. It was truly a joyful moment,” she says of her eight weeks of 12-hour days during February and March.

home in Sandringham she owned with ex-husband Tim Disney and bought a new one nearby. “Having teenagers who are so entrenched in that bayside area is why I wanted to stay local a while longer,” she says. McCune was performing in the Sydney Opera House season of Hamlet, playing Hamlet’s mother, when it was cut short last year. It was the last time she performed in a theatre. Instead of getting on a plane to get home, she hired a car. “March was an eerie time. Lockdown was just starting, and everything was so uncertain. I was too scared to get on a plane, so I drove back.” At her new home, McCune fills her days rearranging furniture and
flowers. I plan to have them hanging up soon.” Inside her garage, which will be knocked down with the new renovations, you’ll find chairs hanging from the ceiling. It looks like the backstage of a theatre company with big old trunks to be found; they’re a nod to many stage memories. She still owns the gold slippers she wore in The King and I in 2014. “I can’t throw them out – they’re worn out, and I went through so many pairs. So much work went into making those shoes.” While she admits she has let go of a lot of possessions with the move, like throwing out boxes of old media clippings she didn’t need anymore, there are some things she has kept. “I have a gorgeous letter from Australian actress June Salter, who I

McCune met Helliar on Rove in the 2000s, which led to them working together on the ABC’s It’s a Date in 2013 and developing chemistry. “There is something really beautiful and honest in comedy compared to other work I have done,” says McCune, a 10-time Logie award winner for dramatic work. “I think his [Helliar’s] show resonates with so many because it really is relatable; it’s light comedy. We all can relate to an everyday moment in there. “Em is also a closer fit to me than the characters I played on Blue Heelers or Sea Patrol.” It took a pandemic for McCune to make drastic life changes she might have delayed if her work schedule remained hectic. She sold the family
objects, preferring white noise to music playing and the smell of food cooking as she potters around. “Home became more of a priority for me,” she says. “I also just turned 50, and it gave me a chance to reevaluate life and where I’m at.” There are plans to turn this home into what might feel more like a gallery space – she’s in the middle of conversations with builders to work it all out. She enjoys flicking through piles of The World of Interiors and House magazines for inspiration and is trying to embrace a minimalist approach to living. But her op-shopping habit might just bring that plan undone. “I have this bizarre fascination with scouring op shops right now and finding beautiful old paintings of
worked with on The Sound of Music. In the letter, she wishes me good luck with the new baby. She is no longer with us anymore. And it’s things like that which are special to me, those connections to people and places, that is what is important.” As far as what the future holds work-wise, McCune is happy to take a back seat for now. Returning to comedy was the happy pill she needed after months away from the limelight. “I haven’t been able to step back into the things I did last year because I now have a son in year 12 and that is taking priority for me. That’s the life of an actor: I don’t know where I’ll end up next.” ● HOW TO STAY MARRIED \ Airs Tuesday nights on 10.

MUSIC Melbourne is slowly getting back to one of its loves: live music Wo r d s

“I want the Brunswick Ballroom to be a multi-genre venue and to cross all sections of entertainment, which makes it even more exciting.” - ANDREW KAY “We’re about finding a sweet spot between heritage acts, new bands, the alternative country scene that came to the Spotted Mallard prior, and supporting Australian artists too,” says Mihelakos. “It’ll be hard to say ‘no’ to so many bands I know. The ballroom is where you’ll get to see these rising stars and say you were there and saw them first.” Folk-blues singer Grace Cummings – dubbed the next Courtney Barnett – recently played a show here to a sold-out audience. While live music is usually best enjoyed standing on sticky carpet and rubbing shoulders with fellow punters, the Brunswick Ballroom aims to give audiences an elevated experience, where sitting down dials in a new era.
Across town, James Young opened Hotel Westwood in Footscray over a year ago. The Cherry Bar and Yah-Yah’s owner spent a “mini fortune” to convert the former Reverence Hotel’s interior to look like a 1974 pub. The main band room holds 340 punters, but only 80 are allowed right now. While live music has defined our city, it’s playing at less than half the speed – this is the era of essential booking and where spontaneity takes a back seat for those wanting old-school entertainment. But that hasn’t stopped Young from getting creative. “We have bands headline two shows to make it worthwhile,” he says. “There’s an 8pm and 10pm show – the model is a win for the bands, a win for punters.”
NICOLE CLEARY
A
s our city slowly wakes from its pandemic slumber and grapples with venue capacity restrictions, one thing is certain – Melbourne is ready to rock. Just how to do it is the big question. Melbourne is known worldwide for its live music scene, with some studies suggesting it has more venues and performances than any other city. Postlockdown, venues are ready to turn on the stage lights and get on with the show. At the newly opened Brunswick Ballroom, formerly the Spotted Mallard, new owner and promoter Andrew Kay did what few contemplated in lockdown. He purchased a rundown venue and brought it back to life, serving live music, cabaret and comedy with a dinner-and-show package. “This is different for Melbourne; nothing like this exists,” says Kay, who has toured diverse acts from The Buena Vista Social Club to children’s show Bluey and Louis Theroux Live on Stage. “I want the Brunswick Ballroom to be a multigenre venue and to cross all sections of entertainment, which makes it even more exciting.” The Brunswick Ballroom’s booker is recent Music Victoria Hall of Fame inductee Mary Mihelakos, whose little black book is in overdrive right now; those trusted pages are flicking at high speed to lure top-tier acts who can sell out the venue.
From country and western and rock’n’roll acts to a soon-to-launch drag bunch and a Saturday trance evening, for Young it’s about catering for all demographics. He says live music is embedded in Melbourne’s DNA, and seeing it return to its former glory requires restrictions to be lifted. Melbourne’s night-time economy generated $3.52 billion in revenue in 2018, an almost 10 per cent increase on previous years. However, it’s been all but decimated due to the pandemic and enforced restrictions. “Health experts have never understood why people want to stand in a bar at 4am and drink. They call it vertical drinking in their circles,” Young says. “Their advice to the government is we want them seated and with a meal. “While that’s well and good, there’s something about standing with like-minded people, sharing your troubles and having a dance. Melbourne did the hard yards and deserves to be rewarded.” ●

Life on the lake
The glow of the afternoon sun over the water at Edwardes Lake Park cements it as a jewel in the crown of Melbourne’s northern suburbs. It just teams with life, with a vibrant mix of people picnicking around playgrounds while children scream joyfully on the massive slide or on the flying foxes. The 28-hectare park, which is visited by more than 135,000 people a year, has two lovely playgrounds, a skatepark, barbecues with shaded seating, walking trails, exercise equipment, sports facilities and toilets. The vocal birdlife swoops and swims as walkers and joggers make their way around on the shady trail. To find the park I weave my way past tennis courts and a bowling club, looking out over the beautifully maintained lawns and onto the water. It’s full of all the makings of an impressive little adventure, and spying an ice-cream truck in the distance I know where I’ll be finishing my journey.

WHO WILL YOU FIND THERE?
Walking through the park, I am happy to see the stunning diversity of people and experiences it holds. Laughter rings from groups of women in brightly coloured head scarves sitting together by the barbecues as their children dart through the playground. There are young couples wearing band T-shirts pushing their kids on the swings. As I follow a trail around the water, I see teenagers playing soccer and some girls playing a classic game of Aussie rules marker’s up. People pump away at the exercise equipment while others lie under the trees, napping away the afternoon. It’s all of Melbourne rolled into one place. I see a woman with a bag and a grab-stick fishing cans out of the lake, so I go to say hello. Liz Hall works as part of a local group called Friends of Edwardes Lake to preserve, restore and manage the ecosystems of the lake. She says it’s important people respect the park by taking their rubbish with them and being mindful of its wildlife.
HOW TO GET THERE
“I love nature, I love wildlife, and for me that’s part of what this is about,” Hall says. “Two Sundays ago, we were standing in the creek, and we heard this plop in the water and we turned around, and there was this tiny southern brown tree frog right beside us – it was so exciting.”

On the north side of the millionaires’ avenue, this 1920s belle is a dazzling oddity among the Victorians. And yes, it loves a close-up; these bay-window rooms appeared in the ’70s TV series The Sullivans. The current owners, who have lived here for 40 years, love the triple-arched hall and enormous study, living and dining rooms, where blown-glass chandeliers twinkle in a showcase of beautifully weird art deco lighting. The kitchen, meals and family rooms and second study were added in the 1980s and form a lovely link to the north-facing garden, pool and gazebo.
