Tony Jones is on par to be Melbourne’s busiest journalist, but even with high profile gigs under his belt – and more to come, it’s certain – the audience has not forgotten his earliest way of earning a crust. The former bank teller would pass his voice recordings, on cassette, to the legendary announcer Craig Willis, and decades on, Jones is the voice of football, talkback on 3AW and the sports headlines on Nine, and is still tapped on the shoulder by old bank customers. In this issue, he chats to Luke Dennehy about the surprising outlook he has on his career and 30 years of the Sunday Footy Show. ●

Empowering swimwear

A

ussie model and social media influencer Brooke Hogan has made her fashion debut with an eco-friendly swimwear line designed to be inclusive of all body shapes. The former Australia’s Next Top Model contestant, who grew up in Frankston and recently celebrated her marriage, is behind the brand Le Mon – a collection inspired by her time in Italy and made in Melbourne and Sydney. Hogan’s sustainability pledge meant she didn’t want to add to fashion’s vast landfill and teamed with an Italian manufacturer of recycled fabrics, Econyl, to get the process started. “I went through five manufacturers until I found the right one,” says Hogan, 29, who had the idea to launch a swimwear line back in 2016 when she came across a few of her long-abandoned sketches. “I made a few business decisions that cost me a lot financially over the last few years, but I had to learn from that experience,” she says. “I know I’ve become a better business owner and person because of it and it’s from those hardships that you grow.” Le Mon The Label, which launched late last year, now includes a readyto-wear collection, including blazers, trousers, tops and dresses. Right now, all eyes are on the brand’s European summer holiday essentials, from bikinis to one-piece swimsuits and sarongs. “I felt the timing was right to enter the market with swim and where I’m at with my career,” Hogan says. “I could have done this years ago but I wasn’t quite ready.” Her mission is to empower women through swimwear design – creating high-waisted two-piece styles that

feel confident no matter what.”

cover your belly, and stylish onepiece suits which would feel right at home on the Amalfi Coast. “The swim line had to make women feel powerful, confident and happy with themselves,” Hogan says. “Having been on many photoshoots and castings when trying to find new management in America and Europe, I often left feeling deflated and low. The focus was always on your appearance and size. I was sick of it. “There are so many brands and agencies who are all about how you look, but I wanted my brand to do the opposite to your mood – to be about making you feel confident no matter what.” Hogan lives on the Mornington Peninsula with her new husband Myles Pitt, whose family owns Hotel Sorrento, where they tied the knot in February. They sold a property and bought vacant land for a new build down the peninsula during the pandemic. Hogan, who has more than 635,000 followers on Instagram, says she changed her approach to her social media posts over the last few years, ever mindful of what others might be going through. Some are paid partnerships with car brands and other beauty brands, but often bragging rights don’t sit well with her. “We didn’t post about selling our home or buying property on socials,” she says. “My husband’s family business was closed for the best part of two years because hospitality was so hard hit, but yeah, I had to think about everything I was posting as I didn’t want it to come across like I didn’t care or wasn’t affected. “I was aware some families struggled to get food on the table.” ●

The busiest man in Melbourne media

“Having a part-time sea change ... has given me a renewed focus on life as opposed to career.” TONY JONES

6

DOM A IN REV IEW

COVER STORY Tony Jones may not want the gig as Nine’s Melbourne newsreader, but he’s still a big part of our lives on TV, radio and at the tennis.

L

ast year journalist Tony Jones came to the realisation that, after 30 years of wanting the top job of reading the news for Nine in Melbourne, he no longer wanted the gig. It was news that his boss Hugh Nailon was surprised to hear when he called Jones, 58, into his office to let him know Alicia Loxley had been anointed to take over when Peter Hitchener wants to retire. It came as a shock to Nailon, as it would to many in the TV industry. “It was really hard because it was something I had aimed for, for 30 years,” Jones says. “But I had confided in a number of people that I had come to the realisation I didn’t really want to do it anymore. “It was becoming stressful because if they said they wanted me to do it, of course, I would, but I didn’t want to.” Jones and his wife Annette had bought a house on the Bellarine Peninsula and his working life was as busy as ever at the point he got the call to chat to Nailon. As well as hosting the Sunday Footy Show, which celebrates 30 years on air this year, Jones reads the 6pm sports news, files stories for the news, is a regular on the Today Show, fills in for host Neil Mitchell on 3AW mornings throughout the year and is an integral part of Nine’s Australian Open tennis coverage each year. The busiest man in Melbourne media is a label that could easily be given to Jones. He didn’t want to get any busier and desired more work and life balance. “I don’t think there was a moment where I changed my goals, I think my priorities changed a bit,” he says. “Having a part-time sea change, and not that I’m talking about retirement at all, but it has given me a renewed focus on life as opposed to career.

“I still love what I am doing, and I hope to do it for many, many, years to come. “But I’ve just got the best of both worlds at the moment.” It was radio and a love of music that initially drove Jones’ desire to have a career in the media. He moved to Melbourne from Sydney after high school to take a job as an ANZ bank teller in the branch in Swanston Street, Carlton. While working at the bank he attended radio school and did what he could to get a break in the industry. He tells a story about legendary announcer Craig Willis, who was a customer at the bank. “Craig worked at 3AW and he would come in to do his banking and I’d slip my cassette tape to him, and he would critique it for me,” Jones says. “He was fantastic in those early days, giving me tips.” To this day, he still gets approached by old bank customers when he is doing live crosses from the MCG. They remember him as the young bank teller in Carlton. After starting work in radio in Wangaratta and later at 3AW, Jones found himself in the Nine newsroom in 1986. He has stayed there since – a remarkable 36 years at the one network. Jones soon became the sports presenter and, in AFL-mad Melbourne, he has broken news around the game for decades. Jones has presented the Sunday Footy Show every week during the AFL season since 2017. There was one time he produced the show, after running into the late TV executive David Leckie at the Nine offices. “There was a boardroom lunch with David Leckie who was then in charge of Nine and we were talking about the Sunday Footy Show, which was getting trounced by Seven, who had a show hosted by Rex Hunt at the time,” Jones says.

Wo r d s

LU K E D E N N E H Y ●

Ph o t o

“I had a few ideas and David Leckie said, ‘Well, if you think you are so bloody good you produce the show. You’ve got six weeks,’ and it went from there.” Tony hosts the show with panellists Matthew Lloyd, Nathan Brown, Kane Cornes and Damian Barrett. The Sunday Footy Show is full of banter, sometimes at Jones’s expense, but he loves it. Jones has even grown used to the nickname Chompers, for his glistening white teeth. From working in a bank when cash was king to a newsroom in the ’80s when there was no such thing as the internet, Jones has seen technology change our working life. This includes social media, which has altered the way journalists work, and sometimes not for the better. After initially embracing social media, including Twitter, Jones no longer has anything to do with the platforms, other than a private Instagram page for family and friends. The benefit of being off Twitter outweighs the positives, he says: “It was like when I gave up smoking. I thought, I don’t need to do this anymore, so I just gave up.” Jones used to run half-marathons and was once a regular at the star-studded F45 gym in Port Melbourne, but these days he likes to walk the dog for an hour to maintain his fitness. He is also very proud of his children – Mitchell, who works at the AFL, and Lauren, who has just started as a primary school teacher. Jones’ wife Annette has always been supportive, and his career doesn’t dominate the conversation at home. “I think the great thing about Annette, and we’ve been married for 30 years, is that most of the time she doesn’t care what has happened at work,” he says. ● THE SUNDAY FOOTY SHOW \ Airs at 10am on Nine and 9Now.

t was in June 2021, when she was feeling the best she had ever felt, that Jacinta Clayton was diagnosed with stage-three breast cancer. The bayside resident, 62, was checked by chance after a regular mammogram appointment that was initially cancelled ended up happening at the last minute. “At the time I had never felt better,” she says.

“I played tennis a couple of times a week and was quite fit and didn’t think anything was wrong. “After I had the mammogram they called me and said not to worry but they wanted me to go into St Vincent’s Hospital for a biopsy and that was the start of it. “I think they pretty much knew straight away something was wrong when they took the biopsy.”

Since being diagnosed, Clayton has been on a rigorous schedule of chemotherapy and, more recently, radiation therapy. The former long-time manager of footy personality Sam Newman, Clayton was in between jobs when diagnosed with cancer. After the initial shock, she has taken it in her stride. “I think when I got diagnosed I was stunned, but after the diagnoses, I just took it day-to-day,” she says. “My attitude was, after being diagnosed, that getting better was my job for the next 12 months.” Her very supportive family and friends have been behind her every step of the way. That includes her son Josh Clayton, who played in the AFL, usually as a forward or midfielder, for the Brisbane Lions.

She

“I can’t recommend getting checked regularly enough. Look at me: I was feeling in the best shape in my life when I was initially diagnosed.” JACINTA CLAYTON

“The support of my husband and my two children has been amazing, as have been my friends” Clayton says. “Meals were dropped off, skincare was dropped off and gifts and flowers, I am very spoilt.” Clayton has signed up as a community ambassador for the Mother’s Day Classic fun run around The Tan at the Royal Botanic Gardens on May 8. It is the 25th year of the charity run, with all funds raised going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Clayton plans to walk the circuit, or perhaps run if she can, with a group of girlfriends. “They probably wouldn’t have done something like the Mother’s Day Classic before,” she says. “But everyone gets touched by cancer in a different way, so it’s great for us all to be involved,” she said. As well as raising important funds, the Mother’s Day Classic also raises health awareness and reminds women to regularly check their breasts. “I can’t recommend getting checked regularly enough,” Clayton

says. “Look at me: I was feeling in the best shape in my life when I was initially diagnosed.” In the past 24 years, the Mother’s Day Classic has raised a remarkable $40 million for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. As well as the major capital city events, runners and walkers can join in at 70 other locations around Australia, or in their own time and at a chosen place. ● MOTHER’S DAY CLASSIC \ For information or to register, go to: ● mothersdayclassic.com.au

Living on the Mornington Peninsula, Hugh Feggans revels in beach and bush. As director of Aych Architects, however, he needed to bring that sunshiny freedom to families in the city. Brilliant amenity, but what about the noise? He was pondering this when called to the corner of Auburn and Rathmines roads by developer JTSE. Courtyards and terraces, greenery, airy living areas, double glazing and a natural palette became his mission for the Artistry Collective, seven apartments with a holiday-home atmosphere and the benefits of an Auburn village address. The penthouse, which occupies the entire top floor, will appeal to families with teenagers as well as to downsizers with guests or adult children. Oak herringbone parquetry, full-height windows and a cool colour scheme of grey, taupe and dark green, with streaky marble and embossed tiles, lock in a breezy elegance that is right up to the minute. The living and dining area opens on two sides to the north-westerly terrace and a view of Hawthorn’s eclectic landmarks, with Auburn’s 1890s Uniting Church versus the Modernist towers of Swinburne University as the spikes in a spectacular panorama. The lift or staircase will take you to the top of Artistry Collective, which, with its red brick and dark timber exterior, has a striking presence on this corner. Inside, all is quiet. Orderly, too – the zoning is immaculate. Turn left to the living-dining area and its view north, west and south via full-length sliders and grey curtains. area has a pebble gas fireplace in a marble pillar. Just off the dining room is a combined laundry and butler’s pantry with ample storage. The easterly wing has a study with a double desk, cupboards and a zigzag bookcase. A slider leads to the balcony. The three carpeted double bedrooms have balcony access. Two have wardrobes and share a dual-entry en suite with a free-standing bath, glass shower and countertop basin. The main bedroom has a dressing room and a marble twin en suite with a shower.
