Twelve years ago, I was diagnosed with a borderline malignant ovarian tumour. It was slow-growing and operable, so I was not faced with lifeending danger; what I can attest to is the insidiousness. It had grown to be as big as a brick. I had few clues. Ovarian issues are hard to detect until the point of blatancy. By then, a cancer is cataclysmic, and therein lies the need for more research. Today show co-host Allison Langdon is an ambassador for Witchery’s White Shirt Campaign, raising funds for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation. Meet Allison in this edition, and give if you can. ●

Andy Allen is loving his MasterChef gig – and Melbourne. Wo r d s

A real fan favourite TINA SMIGIELSKI

hen MasterChef co-host and new Melbourne resident Andy Allen decided to join the reality TV cooking show as a contestant 10 years ago, he never anticipated that giving up his electrician day job would lead to the gig of a lifetime. The 33-year-old is finally feeling at ease in front of the camera as one of its judges, and with three hosting seasons under his belt, admits it’s what happens off-camera that makes MasterChef work. “My friendship with Jock and Melissa is paramount to the success of the show,” says Allen, who relocated from Sydney to Melbourne six months ago with his fiancee Alex Davey, living near Jock Zonfrillo and food writer turned TV personality Melissa Leong, in the inner north. “Having a good relationship with your co-hosts allows you to be comfortable and to be yourself; that’s the secret ingredient. Our friendship is reflected in the contestants we have on the show and they need that relaxed, fun environment to cook at their best.” This season’s Fans & Favourites has kicked off, with some contestants back to spice up the format – including some who competed in Allen’s season four. But it’s the return of celebrity chef Marco Pierre White that is a nostalgic highlight, reminding Allen of his humble beginnings in the kitchen. “I haven’t seen Marco since he was a guest judge in season four in 2012,” Allen says. “He remembered me from 10 years ago when I was in the bottom three in an elimination and he was on set. I have to thank him for saving me, because I moved into the top 10 and that’s when my cooking went next-level.” Allen is about to open a new joint venture, but remains tight-lipped about the finer details for now. He runs Three Blue Ducks at URBNSURF in Tullamarine and remains a partner in Byron Bay’s Three Blue Ducks. “I was trying to commute from Sydney to Melbourne to film the show but it all got too hard. I moved to Melbourne in between filming Celebrity MasterChef and this new season and we’re loving it,” Allen says. “Ali and I got engaged last October and wanted to spend more time together. She found a new role in Melbourne and decided to give it a crack. Moving here has made our relationship easier and stronger. We plan on getting married next year.”

His passion for cooking is inspired by his lacklustre childhood food experience, and Allen still enjoys plating up for family and friends. “I started cooking because Mum and Dad didn’t do it much and I grew up eating basic food,” he says. “Dad had three dishes in his repertoire – one was a horrible green chicken curry with overcooked green beans in a watery sauce. He would make a batch and we’d eat it for a month. Nobody at home inspired me to get in the kitchen and cook, it came

about because of my own curiosity. I don’t think Dad will mind if I tell this story because it’s true.” At home it’s all about healthy meals, and if comfort food is needed, it comes without the calories. “I love comfort food, but if we do it, there’s always a healthy version of it,” he says. “Ali and I love roast pumpkin salads and root vegetables.” ● MASTERCHEF: FANS & FAVOURITES \ Airing now on Channel 10 and 10 play.

ike far too many Australians, Today show cohost Allison Langdon has come to know the insidiousness of ovarian cancer. One in eight Australian women die from ovarian cancer, a statistic that makes Langdon reflect on a dear friend who was one of them a few years ago. “My friend had been sick for a while. It was so cruel and heartbreaking,” she says. “Symptoms can be anything from bloating to IBS ... I watched the process play out for her and it was quick. It wasn’t until then that I realised how little research there is on ovarian cancer. Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF) is the biggest funder of research in the country and one we need to treat with a sense of urgency.” Langdon is a Witchery White Shirt campaign ambassador for the third year running. This year, she is sporting the Michael Lo Sordo-designed shirt, which will raise money for OCRF.

The heart of the story … The 14-year partnership between Witchery and OCRF is marked by White Shirt Day on May 8, with 100 per cent of gross proceeds of Witchery’s shirt sales going to the cause. To date, the retailer has donated more than $14.3 million to OCRF. As one of Australia’s most relatable media personalities, Langdon has a loyal following of fans who wake up to her on the Nine network every weekday morning. She’s fostered the perfect on-screen chemistry with co-host Karl Stefanovic – and it’s exactly that which makes their sofa time a rating’s success. Langdon is a former 60 Minutes reporter – she left after 10 years when her second child was born – and was offered the morning show gig alongside Stefanovic two years ago. She has interviewed everyone from prime ministers to ordinary Australians, navigating bushfires, floods and the pandemic. Although she didn’t have a day off in 2021 – except an escape to her parent’s farm with the kids for the month of December – she says she’s doing what she loves. “Karl and I have known each other for a long time and one thing I have learned after 10 years at 60 Minutes is that when you’re on the road with so many personalities, you have to learn to work with everyone,” Langdon says. “I know Karl’s strength and weakness and he knows mine. We complement each other and I like him – that makes a big difference too,” she says. “I am good mates with his wife [Jasmine] and he with my husband and our families hang out and we have each other’s back. It doesn’t mean we don’t fight or disagree on an editorial vision on occasion, but it’s one of those things that’s always sorted. I trust him and he’s fun to be around. Despite the challenge of 3am starts, Langdon is grateful she can do the school and daycare pick-ups and spend two days a week with her three-year-old at home.

“Having this time with the kids while they’re young is really important for me,” she says. Langdon is respected for her tough and direct interview style but can turn on the cheek when required. She is married to fellow TV journalist Mike Willesee jnr and says her late father-in-law Mike Willesee, who died in 2019 from throat cancer, was the ultimate inspiration. “Mike senior was great in being authentic,” Langdon says. “This idea that not everyone is going to like you and they don’t need to is one he talked to me about. It’s important to be real and it’s OK if people don’t

interviewing women running secret schools for girls in countries where women aren’t allowed to get an education. And those who work in animal shelters.” The secret to her on-screen interview approach all comes down to being thoroughly prepared, determined without being annoying and handling tricky moments with care. “It’s ultimately about being respectful and if you push something hard, people won’t want to talk, they’ll shut down,” she says. “At 60 Minutes we didn’t interview anyone where topics were off discussion, and if those caveats were placed on us, we’d say ‘thanks, but no thanks’.”

“OCRF is the biggest funder of research in the country and one we need to treat with a sense of urgency.” like your opinion. He would say they can see right through you if you aren’t being your true self.” A barbecue in her backyard with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl in 2017 for 60 Minutes and singing New York with Alicia Keys on a Manhattan rooftop in 2013 are some career highlights for the mother of two. “The Alicia interview and singing together was a ‘holy hell’ moment,” she says. “Her people had said she’s generous with her time but no singing today. But once on that rooftop I looked at her and said, ‘Alicia, we can’t be here and not do it’.” A post-interview drink with actor Tom Hanks is another moment she’ll happily relive. “Tom Hanks is one of the most beautiful humans on the planet and Ron Howard [director] came in and joined us,” she says. But it’s the interviews with people who fly under fame’s radar that resonate the most. “Some of the most powerful interviews I have done have been

Although she likes those she interviews to open up about their lives, Langdon prefers to keep hers out of social media for the most part. “I understand the benefit of social media,” she says. ”But I feel emotions are so high right now and have been for the last couple of years that it can be toxic. I really limit my exposure because it can mess with your head too much. “For my own mental health, I don’t look at Twitter,” she adds. “I will engage with it when a big story is breaking, but the button which allows you to see when your name has been mentioned, I don’t touch it because there might be one bad comment that I’d notice out of the 100 nice comments.” ● THE WITCHERY OCRF WHITE SHIRT \ Designed by Michael Lo Sordo – with all proceeds to OCRF – is available from April 20 for $129.95

Melbourne’s Atong Atem, Dean Cross and Madeline Bishop and respected British photographer Gillian Wearing are all taking part. “We want to celebrate photography as visual art and the role it plays in our lives,” says artistic director Elias Redstone. “Some of the most important artists in the world right now said ‘yes’ to showing in Melbourne. It’s an honour we’re all on the same page in recognising how important photography is right now.” Here are our top five must-see artists from the festival.

British artist Gillian Wearing turns the lens on herself to contemplate the idea of ageing in a contemporary world, focusing on a powerful series that includes video art. Her images are printed on wallpaper that wraps around the ACMI gallery walls, and huge self-portraits look at ageism in a digitally processed world.

CINDY SHERMAN, UNTITLED FILM STILL \ THE ATRIUM, FED SQUARE

Known for her elaborately disguised self-portraits, Cindy Sherman was a perfect choice for Photo 22’s Being Human biennale. Her Untitled Film Still is purposefully enlarged for maximum impact. “We approached Cindy via her gallery with this ambitious idea to celebrate her work and she agreed,” Redstone says. “Nobody explores the human condition through photography like she does – and she has a huge influence on how we think of portraiture. She understands how we can play with perceptions of ourselves, with fluidity of identity and the nature of self.”

Melbourne was marvellous to William Bushby Jones, the English-born merchant who prospered here in the 1870s. To celebrate, he created his own version of a famous English garden. Brocklesby in Lincolnshire gave its name to Armadale’s Brocklesby estate, 4.45 hectares of Arcadian bliss that in the 1880s became home to this elegant twostorey house. (Jones’ own home is now part of Lauriston Girls’ School, nearby.) Why did Jones love that English Brocklesby? Perhaps because it was designed by Lancelot “Capability” Brown, nicknamed because he could survey a weedy wasteland and say “It has capability, my lord”. This slice of the second Brocklesby, with its pool, deck and lavish leafiness, has brilliant capability for a 21st-century family. The house, harmoniously extended about 30 years ago, has been home to the current owners since 2009. Its white-walled library, living, dining and family rooms, conservatory and arched terrace make a beautiful backdrop for their collection of contemporary Australian art and modernist furniture. There’s ample room to work from home and to entertain by the pool. High Street’s shops and cafes are walkable, as is Toorak station. Airy and bright, this Victorian home could easily captivate a family torn between heritage and minimalist. The central hall, crisp in Baltic pine with a scrolled arch and timber staircase, sets the tone to sharp and chic. Turn left to the front living room, cosy in taupe carpet with a marble fireplace, box-bay window and chandelier. The carpeted dining room adjoins. Across the hall, the pine-
