It’s easy to become a little envious after a scroll through Instagram and seeing the glamorous lives of some of Melbourne’s well-heeled. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned in my time in the media, it’s that people’s lives are often more complex than what is splashed across our screens. Rozalia and Nick Russian are two such people. Socialites, A-listers, and influencers yes, but also hardworkers, parents and philanthropists. The couple is set to attend the MRC Blue Diamond Ball for charity this month, and, in this week’s cover story by Kim Wilson, they explain what life is like off the red carpet. ●

COVER STORY
Golden couple Nick and Rozalia Russian live a glittering life, but out of the spotlight it’s all about hard work and staying humble.
O
ne look at glamour couple Nick and Rozalia Russian’s social media accounts shows a picture-perfect life full of fabulous fashion, fun parties and a lovely family life. Nick is the owner of hot new supper club Bar Bambi, while Rozalia is a former ballerina turned power inf luencer and creative director. They both have high profiles on the Melbourne social scene, but individually and together they are more than just pretty faces. Scratch below the surface and you will find two hard-working, determined, creative and entrepreneurial people who may look like graceful swans gliding across the surface of life, but underneath their legs are working overtime to keep propelling them forward. Neither was born into a life of luxury and so they know not to take any of their success for granted. “Both Nick and I come from very humble backgrounds where we’ve always been told and taught that no one’s going to throw a bag of gold over your fence,” Rozalia says. “If you want to go out and do something, you’ve got to do it yourself. As soon as I could get a job at 15 years and 9 months, I went straight to Coles as a check-out chick.” Rozalia was born in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, and escaped with her family when she was three. “We f led in 1991 because the USSR was breaking up,” she says. “We f led with one suitcase, and I think about $150. My mum had to melt everything down into gold because we weren’t allowed to take anything over. We actually f led on a tourist visa.” The current crisis in Ukraine has hit home for the 34-year-old mother of two as her father is from the besieged nation.
“It’s something that’s close to my heart because we did go through [something like] it,” she says. While their professional lives may be high profile, they are keen to shield their daughter Willow, 8, and son Kingston, 5, from the spotlight when they can. “We try to minimise it as much as possible, really, how much we do put them out there,” Nick says. “We often get offered different things for the kids, asking would they like this or that, and do a photo of them on social media or whatever it might be, but Rozalia declines 99 per cent of it. “We need to instil in the kids the mindset that it’s not normal just to be given things all the time, you need to work for it. And the other thing is, we are trying to minimise how much time they are exposed to any form of media.” Rozalia says coming from the background she did has instilled in her a strong work ethic, one she hopes their children will learn. “We try to teach our children that in life, no one’s going to give you something; you need to work for it,” she says. “We also want our kids to be kids. When they’re old enough and they want a job and if it’s something that they want to get into, whether it’s modelling and being out there, that’s a discussion that we can have. “But I’ve always said that I feel like they need to make that decision and I wouldn’t force them to do anything that they don’t want to do.” Nick’s work life has amped up since COVID, with the opening of Bar Bambi in the old Cherry Bar site in Melbourne’s CBD in November last year. “Anytime you launch a new business, those first 12 months, you just really have to bury yourself in there and just continue to try to get ahead,” he says.

“Since opening in November, we’ve been very lucky. The place is a full house every night and it’s been accepted really well by the public. It’s booked out weeks and months in advance, so we are very grateful for all the support that we’ve been given from all of our guests.” While she relishes working with and supporting local and international fashion labels, Rozalia’s long-term goal is to start her own brand. “I’ve been fortunate enough to work with different brands and I’m on to my fourth design collection for another brand. But eventually, I’d like to finally put something out there with my own name on it,” she says. In the meantime, the couple is looking forward to attending the Melbourne Racing Club’s Blue Diamond Ball on May 12. The MRC Foundation has partnered with Koala Kids, a charity that brings happy moments to children and young people during cancer treatment, with the annual gala to be held at Caulfield Racecourse. “We’re really looking forward to spending some time together but as well being able to support a charity like Koala Kids, which is an incredible charity,” Rozalia says. Time out together is rare these days as Nick focuses on getting Bar Bambi going and Rozalia keeps family life centred and stable. “We always said, and this comes down to a partnership, we try to make sure that at all times at least one parent is at home for the kids,” Rozalia says. “With Nick opening Bambi, this is the time for him to be out there and absolutely driving anything and everything and then once things settle down, I’ll start driving my own brand.” ●

om Gleeson doesn’t take his place in the limelight for granted. The 47-yearold comedian and Hard Quiz host admits his pursuit for recognition has been a gradual hard slog (no pun intended) over two decades. “I have recorded many TV pilot shows that never got picked up and many that haven’t been renewed either,” Gleeson says. After starting out in stand-up comedy in the 1990s, Gleeson got his TV break on Network 10’s Skithouse in the early 2000s, in which he played a parody of fast bowler Dennis Lillee. The popularity of his Hard Chat segment on The Weekly With Charlie Pickering led to Gleeson eventually hosting Hard Quiz on ABC TV by 2016.

“Things not working out in TV is normal, and things working out really well is unusual,” he says. “I am ever grateful that Hard Quiz is resonating with so many.” Gleeson has just finished the seventh season of the satirical quiz show, in which his deadpan responses made him a hit among young and old – earning him Gold Logie glory in 2019. After the win, everybody was curious about what Gleeson would do next, having reached the pinnacle of TV recognition in Australia. “I didn’t change a thing after winning the Gold Logie,” he says. “Why change something when it’s working? I don’t look like a traditional TV host; I am a bit abrasive. I thought maybe I am too niche, but I have my own TV show format and I can say whatever I want, and it’s the dream job.” Gleeson, who lives in Romsey near Victoria’s Macedon Ranges with his wife (food writer Ellie Parker) and their two children, says he’s the quiet one in reality.
“Things working out really well is unusual. I am ever grateful that Hard Quiz is resonating with so many.” “My mother, brother and sisters are much louder than me,” he says. “I am not nearly as mouthy and gregarious as people expect. There is nothing worse than a performer in a social situation who dominates the conversation, so I prefer to be the guy who sits back to listen.” Gleeson’s seven-year-old son is a regular viewer of Hard Quiz, if only to match the appetite of those at his school who constantly talk about the show. “I don’t really know why kids like watching it so much; maybe they see a man misbehave wearing a suit who looks like a teacher but isn’t,” Gleeson says. “Our 10-year-old daughter is well behaved, but my son is a little bit of a rebel, and watching his dad saying the most heinous things on TV and then getting a round of applause is a bit of
a tricky one. I explain to him you don’t talk like that in real life.” The secret to the show’s success includes a team of clever writers, Gleeson says. “The writing and research that goes into the questions takes a lot of time, and our writers do an amazing job,” he says. “They’ll take a subject like Trotsky and create five questions that people at home won’t be bored by and make sure we learn something about him at the same time. They tell a story in those five questions that are a mix of difficult, true and interesting and entertaining to hear.” ● HARD QUIZ \ Seasons 1-7 streaming on ABC iview ● iview.abc.net.au/show/hard-quiz

ne of the most famous moves in ballet is the pirouette. When executed properly, it looks like an effortless spin on the tip of the toe – “en pointe” for those in the know. But, if you’ve seen a class of baby ballerinas as they all comically wobble, you’ll know it requires great balance. Parenting is much the same. Extracurricular activities help expand and explore interests, plus develop social skills, confidence and new friendships. But when it comes to very young children, how do you find the right balance? Clinical psychologist and Headspace mental health expert Mary Spillane says that because we missed out during the pandemic, “the temptation is to do everything at once”. Children beginning their education journey don’t need to be overwhelmed with too many other activities at the start, so ease them into it. “Don’t do footy, dance, karate, all in the one go. Just start with one activity, see how things go, and then you can scale up from there,” Spillane says. The needs of parents and other siblings also should be considered. “I’ve seen parents who are totally burnt out from taking their kids to all of these different things, and that can then have an impact on the family as well.” She says a trial-and-error approach, in which you allow yourself the flexibility to add or subtract activities will help find the right balance, as will refraining from comparing your child with others. “Different kids have different temperaments,” says Spillane. “Some might be able to cope with a higher level of extracurricular activities than others, so just focus on your child and family and those needs, first and foremost.” To ensure your child is coping with their schedule, she says to observe, listen and engage. “Be curious. Ask them, ‘How are you going? How are you finding it? What are you liking? What don’t you like?’”
“Ask them, ‘How are you going? How are you finding it? What are you liking? What don’t you like?’” MARY SPILLANE
Take a session or a week off if they need a break, she says, and mix it up with some unstructured play, mindfulness meditation or simple rest. If children are truly unhappy, which Spillane says is something to observe as a pattern of behaviour over several weeks as opposed to a one-off mood, consider withdrawing them altogether. “It’s important to have a child who’s doing things that they like. Allowing children to follow their interests and develop those is quite a healthy thing.” This way, you can ensure the activities are the best fit for that child. This has been the case for Kelly Phillips and her daughter Dawn, who is in grade two and takes weekly swimming and musical theatre lessons, as well as individual singing classes once a fortnight.
The swimming lessons were for practical reasons, while Dawn’s penchant for “dressing up, singing and dancing” made performing arts an obvious choice. However, Dawn struggled with the structure of ballet classes. “I could see it was hard for her,” Phillips says. “I listened to her and encouraged her to try musical theatre instead. It was a much better fit.” While getting Dawn and her sister Penelope to all their classes might feel like doing a perpetual pirouette, Phillips says it is a “team effort” shared between herself, and her husband and mother. The reward is Dawn’s enthusiasm for life. “She’s always telling us she loves her extracurricular activities.” ●

ending her daughter Edie to school was a big decision for Esther Coleman-Hawkins. Though Edie was the right age to leave the familiar spaces and faces at kindergarten, her teachers suggested she stay another year. They said that though academically Edie was thriving, she wasn’t coping well when she made mistakes, and was having some issues socially. “The second year [at kinder] was amazing,” says Coleman-Hawkins. “A school setting is so big that the social and emotional is way more important to get right than worrying about whether they can read and write, because they can pick that up.”
An extra year at kinder is what some kids need to thrive at school.

The transition to school can be both exciting and challenging, as children navigate a new learning environment. Toorak College principal Kristy Kendall says parents should focus on whether their child is both developmentally and academically ready for school – rather than just going off their age. “There seems to be this real kind of momentum towards making sure your child’s doing what other kids are doing at that age,” says Kendall, who has a psychology degree and a masters in education. She says children are all so different that comparing them to others could be to their detriment. “Leaving preconceived ideas around comparisons and age at the door is really important.” Kendall says the main thing children need to start school is independence, and holding them back a year so that they gain the skills they need can help them grow into confident young people. “Can they navigate social conflict? Do they know what to do if they’ve lost something? Are they the

kind of kid who understands what seeking help looks like? What helping others looks like?” she says. “We need to remember they’re developing their own perception of self. So if we put them in a situation where they’re not ready, or they can’t do it – how many months do you want your child to sit there and learn about themselves that they can’t? “Waiting for those other signals will mean that their self-talk is ‘I can’.” Though orientation programs will usually involve a visit to the new school so kids can learn where the toilets and drinking fountains are, Kendall says building confidence in their surroundings can happen outside the school grounds, such as at a
shopping centre: “‘Where do we go to get eggs?’ ‘We’ve got to go down there and around there’.” Remembering that your child’s teacher is a valuable resource is important too, Kendall says, as they’ve seen thousands of kids at the same age. “It’s a really a time to stop and listen,” she says. Coleman-Hawkins says establishing a personal connection with Edie’s teacher and principal helped her settle in at school. “The more comfortable she felt in the community, the more enjoyable the whole process was,” she says. “Being comfortable and confident emotionally and socially means learning can become fun, rather than a pressure.” ●

When Wattle Park was founded in 1917 it seemed to lay down a commandment for the whole neighbourhood: This shall be a good place for a good time. It has come to pass that this chunk of Surrey Hills, just north of the park and its playgrounds, golf course and 12,000 wattle trees, is beloved by families of all ages and stages. Five minutes’ walk from the park is this single-level house and a good 20 years’ worth of elegant family living. The house, built in 1940, was renovated in 2014 by the current owners, who wanted a capacious ranch for their young, free-ranging family. Formal and casual living areas, four bedrooms and two contemporary bathrooms offer flexible space as the children grow up. The enclosed front garden and carport let toddlers tumble and teens throw hoops. Out the back, a covered deck steps down to a landscaped lawn and glassfenced pool, perfect for holidays at home. Looking chic in stippled render, the house has a shaded porch where one can sit out with a book while the children play. The central hall leads to the front bay lounge, which has an original fireplace (now gas log) with rose-pattern tiles and dentil details. Also to the fore are the four double bedrooms, snugly carpeted in grey wool against white walls and wardrobes. The main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and a fully tiled twin en suite with a walk-in shower. Three further bedrooms share a central bathroom with a bath and shower.
