The pandemic has been hard on all of us, but it’s fair to say teens and those in their early 20s have done it tougher than most. School formals cancelled, travel plans nixed, studies disrupted and valuable experiences forgone. For 21-year-old swimmer Brendon Smith, the letdown was on an even greater scale, as the 2020 Olympic dream he had been working toward was dashed. But luckily the Games were held a year later and the Aussie swim team brought home a slew of medals – starting with Smith’s bronze. In this week’s cover story, he talks about that win and his hopes for future Olympic gold. ●

We spoke to Priscilla Presley at the new Elvis exhibition in Bendigo. Wo r d s

P
riscilla Presley had never heard of Bendigo until the regional town’s art gallery contacted Graceland to unearth some of Elvis’s private collection for an exclusive exhibition. Elvis: Direct from Graceland at the Bendigo Art Gallery features more than 300 pieces of memorabilia, from the decadent rhinestone jumpsuit collection Elvis wore during his ’68 Comeback Special, to rare Sun Records vinyl pressings and his wedding tuxedo. “Not many Australians have had the chance to come to Graceland, so we wanted to bring something special to them and to keep Elvis’s spirit and legacy alive,” says Priscilla, who was in Bendigo for the opening of the exhibition. “I get emotional seeing all the fans have the reaction they do. “Elvis never thought he’d be remembered after his passing and to see how much he was loved in this quaint town feels too unreal to be true.” The Melbourne chapter of the Elvis Fan Club was established in 1965 and is still going strong today. When Elvis died in August 1977, Melbourne was one of the first cities to erect a memorial in his honour – you can still visit it at the Melbourne General Cemetery. Priscilla’s wedding dress from their marriage in Las Vegas in 1967 is on display at the exhibition. “I could not go and choose a wedding dress from any high-end store because the emphasis was on it being private,” Priscilla recalls. “I ended up at a place in LA that sold nothing but gowns and was off the beaten track. I had Charlie Hart with me – he was part of Elvis’ Memphis Mafia. I wasn’t that open back in the day – yes, to fans who knew me – but people who worked in stores didn’t know me that well. Charlie came in as my boyfriend. I put on a gown and said, ‘Honey what do you think of this?’ It threw those in the store completely; they had no idea who I was.” At home, she’ll play Elvis’ If I Can Dream to reminisce about their time together.
Living with the King “Seeing him perform that in the ’68 Comeback is proof he was living that song,” Priscilla says. “It was truly how he felt about the world and you can see it in his eyes. He gets lost in it.” In Australia, Elvis had 14 number one singles; the most achieved outside of America. “He always wanted to tour Australia. I’m sad he never got to realise that dream,” Priscilla says. She wants the exhibition to help keep his superstar status alive. “This exhibition allows us to encourage younger generations to think of Elvis and

pass it on to their kids and so on. There is no one like Elvis Presley. He had such charisma. He would walk into a room and you can feel the electricity; I have never felt that from anyone. He loved what he did and loved music, but his personality and his energy – he was born to be here and do something.” At 76, Priscilla dedicates herself to keeping Graceland the second most popular tourist attraction in the US after the White House. “He was part of my life, and still is,” Presley says. “I feel his presence at Graceland; it’s haunting. It’s also my job to make sure people visit and take away the gift that he gave his mother and share the love he had for it. For now we get to share a special part of him with fans in Australia too.” ● ELVIS: DIRECT FROM GRACELAND \ until July 17 at

As good as gold He became a “bronzed” Aussie in Tokyo, but Brendon Smith is going for gold at the Paris Olympics in 2024.

hen Brendon Smith won a bronze medal in the 400-metre individual medley at the Tokyo Olympics last year, it set the scene for a brilliant Games for the Australian
swim team. But the road to Olympic glory was not paved with gold – or even bronze – but rather lockdowns, travel restrictions, postponements and training in some unconventional places. For Smith, that included his parents’ backyard pool in Donvale in Melbourne’s east. “The pool was about 10 metres long, so not that big,” Smith says. “I took care of that with a bungee cord and Dad connected a hose which added a bit of hot water to the pool, as it wasn’t heated in the middle of winter.” The 21-year-old also used to swim at Half Moon Bay in Black Rock to keep the momentum going while swimming pools across the city were closed due to COVID lockdowns. Smith believes it was these unique training conditions that toughened up the Australian team going into Tokyo. Australia ended up winning 20 medals in the pool, including nine gold, as Victorians watched at home in the middle of yet another lockdown. “That we were able to go through what we did [with lockdowns in Melbourne] and still outperform most of the other nations, was pretty amazing,” Smith says. “It made the team stronger, but also very appreciative.” The success of the team all began when Smith won that first medal on day two of the Olympics. It was a remarkable turnaround for the Australian swim team, which rebuilt after the controversy-ridden 2012 London Olympics when the Aussies walked away with just one gold medal, and subsequent reports depicted a team plagued with substance misuse and bullying. “Honestly, the whole experience is still really surreal,” Smith says of the win. He says he will use it to motivate him for future events, including the Australian Swimming Championships in Adelaide this month. “We were all just so positive to be in Tokyo in the first place,” he says. At one stage, when the Tokyo Olympics were cancelled in 2020 because of the pandemic, Smith thought he was not going to be able to live his Olympic dream after years of training. Luckily, they were postponed to a year later in 2021.
Ph o t o
J O E R U C K LI
“Obviously, third is an incredible achievement but I would like to have done better. “But given the year I had and going through all the lockdowns Melbourne was going through and the adversities that came with that, I think I did a pretty good job.” Smith grew up in Donvale and started swimming at the nearby Nunawading Swimming Club as a child. He was still training there in the lead-up to the Olympics, before the pool was shut during lockdowns. His family is considered swimming royalty at the club – his grandmother, Margaret, taught there for 40 years. His parents, Peter and Annisa, are also both brilliant swimmers, as are his three sisters, Nerice, Mikayla and Reidel. After the Olympics and the retirement of his coach, Wayne Lawes, Smith made the difficult decision to relocate to the Gold Coast where he now trains with superstar coach Michael Bohl. The squad, located at Griffith University, includes three Tokyo gold medallists: Emma McKeon, Emily Seebohm and Smith’s girlfriend, backstroke champion Kaylee McKeown. “She is an incredible athlete and great to be around, and she did really well in Tokyo,” Smith says. “I know she will do even better the next time around and [in] the next few years.” Smith hopes to be at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK, on July 28 and the Paris 2024 Olympics. He is currently preparing for a huge program at the Australian Swimming Championships which will double as the Commonwealth Games selection trials. All eyes will be on him for the 400-metre individual medley – considered one of the most challenging events. He will also swim the 200-metre individual medley and, potentially, the 200 and 400-metre freestyle events if he can fit them all in. “Hopefully, all things going well, I’ll be able to represent Australia on [the Commonwealth Games and Olympic] teams, but obviously I have to focus on day to day,” he says. “In saying that, it’s great to have those big events on the horizon to keep me motivated.” ● THE AUSTRALIAN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS \ Airs live on Amazon Prime Video from May 17.

Melbourne shoe designers strut their stuff overseas. Wo r d s
JA N E R O C CA
PH A R E
S
ome of Melbourne’s best shoe designers have got a foothold in the overseas market, with buyers keen to embrace originality and sustainability. Luxury shoe designer Meggan Morimoto started her label in 2018 and has pivoted with a collection pitched to brides and after-hours dress-ups. Her pumps with embellishments are capturing a US,
MEGGAN MORIMOTO
European and Canadian market. Her pieces are hand-made in Tuscany. “There’s a huge bridal shoe gap in the market worldwide and we feel privileged to have built the brand to where it is today and to be able to fill that gap,” Morimoto says. “Selling online has enabled fantastic growth for our company.” Five sleek designs in Morimoto’s Brides and Beyond collection are modern, minimalist shoes that come with removable embellishments like clip-on pearls. Think gold metallic leather mules and a block heel sandal in a soft nappa finish. “Brides want luxury and comfort and care about reduced wastage. Our limited production run is part of our slow, sustainable approach, and the antithesis of mass-produced bridal footwear,” Morimoto says. Petrina Hare, the creative director and founder of Phare, started her label five years ago out of frustration at the lack of quality footwear that is functional and beautifully crafted. She’s garnered a following in Australia, and is increasingly attracting global attention.
“We’re about designing a luxury shoe without the ridiculous price tag,” Hare says. She sells from her online boutique, with both local and international customers in awe of her practical feminine shoes. Celebs Dannii Minogue and Lindy Rama-Ellis (formerly Klim) are fans, but it was when Hong Kong model and TV host Eunis Chan took to wearing a pair of Phare shoes that sales soared. She presents her footwear through collaboration, such as a pop-up in Hawksburn with bespoke interior designer Christopher Elliot, which attracted worldwide attention for its storytelling, where still-life shoes sat alongside geometric design. “There is most definitely a market segment wanting something other than the usual luxury brands or less expensive footwear brands that churn out the latest trend that dies a season later,” Hare says. Annie Abbott launched Habbot in 2009, after a career as a footwear designer at Net-a-Porter, Sass and Bide and Figgins Group (which owned the old Emporio on Bourke
Street). She says she’s obsessed with toe shapes and the sculptural element of shoemaking. “Shoes are incredible personality megaphones,” Abbott says. “I design shoes for women who really know their own style and shoes are such an easy and accessible way to express your personality. A good pair of shoes won’t discriminate by age, size, shape, height or race and even [a] ‘relaxed’ dresser can make a statement with a considered footwear choice.” Abbott’s largest overseas audience is in New Zealand, along with boutique UK retailers aligned with her aesthetic. “Our overseas customers tend to generally favour our dressier shoes”, with those in the US and Asia particularly craving colour, she says. “My aim is for customers to fall in love with a shoe that will stay with them for years to come, rather than tiring of something that is tied to a passing fad, so I try to ignore fashion trends and let the ‘wow’ factor guide me when I’m designing each collection. My design process is a mix of maths and madness.” ●

he city of London has come back to life in an incredible way; it's as open and free as a city can be. It’s a no-brainer to make a beeline for the museums, concert halls and galleries scattered across the city (the Natural History Museum is a definite go-to). With the infamous English weather, having some indoor activities planned is a must. As far as braving the outdoors goes, Carnaby Street is the place to see the meeting of the best oldEnglish charm, boutique shopping and any food you desire. The street has a rotation of art installations, transporting you to other worlds while remaining in the middle of the hustle and bustle.
ISTOCK
Eat & drink The English have never had the best rap for their cuisine, but this is quite unfair. London’s food scene is quite similar to that of Melbourne’s. There is no shortage of beautiful restaurants in London, but if there was one I have to implore you to visit, it is Dishoom – a small group of Indian restaurants, located in the best parts of town, serving traditional food and drinks all day and night. The bacon naan is famous throughout London, and with unlimited chai on offer, it is the perfect
She
place to start the day. The restaurant has an extensive cocktail and dinner menu ideal for sharing and the welcoming decor and comfortable layout are perfect for a long lunch or dinner. For a step into real old England, a fun place to stop by in the evening is WC in Clapham. At the bottom of a dark staircase behind a heavy curtain, you’ll find one of the best wine lists in town and impeccable service. Located beneath the Clapham Common tube station, WC stands for wine and charcuterie, and offers both in a beautifully refurbished bar that happens to be a 100-year-old former public toilet – or water closet. The booths are the original stalls.
Do Something definitely worth looking into while in London is Hampton Court Palace, which holds concerts and events on its grounds that make for the most fabulous night out – think Pimms and picnics. If you’re looking to further escape the busyness of central London, a walk around Battersea Park is recommended. Located on the River Thames
Theatres on Shaftesbury Avenue.
between Chelsea and Albert Bridge, this park is a beautiful mix of open grass, manicured flower beds, ponds and sporting fields. Although it’s quite central, you feel an immediate escape from the big city, surrounded by huge trees with locals (and their posh puppies) going about their day. In the middle of the park near Boating Lake is Pear Tree Cafe, providing a menu of classic English food and indoor and outdoor seating. It’s the place to go to feel like a local and relax. ● For the latest travel information on Britain:

WINE
Drink inside the box
I
t may have been a while since you tried wine from a cask – perhaps not since the ’90s or early 2000s. After all, it was much cheaper than those fancy bottles. Plus, when you were done, there was a handy silver blow-up ball to kick around the park. But gone are the days of the cheap and nasty goon bag. Cask wine has had a chic, environmentally conscious makeover by the team at Melbourne’s Hey Tomorrow. Two of the co-founders, couple Shane Barrett and Sacha Imrie (head sommelier at Daughter in Law restaurant) say they have reimagined the cask in a new environmentally friendly two-litre box. “Drinking from a cask with longer shelf life means if you want to drink less you certainly can,” Barrett says.
From cheap to chic; the humble cask of wine gets a stylish and environmentally friendly makeover. Wo r d s

“Sacha and I would waste so much wine because we never got around to finishing bottles within a few days. “She’d want half a glass and I’d drink a few. Then, for some reason or another, we’d forget the bottle had been opened. It was wastage at its worst.” Barrett and Imrie have teamed up with Jesse Gerner, Kelly O’Loghlen and Andrew Fisk – hospitality pros
behind some of Melbourne’s bestloved food and wine venues including Anada in Fitzroy, Bomba in the CBD and Samuel Pepys bottle shop in Northcote. Far from a side hustle, the founders, who have known each other for 15 years, are in for the long haul and have invested big bucks to make their cask-wine business a success story.
Imrie says she became curious about cask wine about five years ago while studying for the Wine and Spirit Education Trust diploma. “The packaging was so dull and there was a serious image problem that had to be addressed,” she says. “It got me thinking how could we turn something dull and dry into something much more interesting.” Hey Tomorrow has collaborated with some of the biggest names in wine, and the environmentallyfriendly packaging comes printed with the winery’s name, giving seasoned quaffers an idea of what’s in the box. “We partner with reputed wineries to build confidence in our product,” Barrett says. “Hey Tomorrow is about accessing quality wine, endorsed by

“The packaging was so dull and there was a serious image problem that had to be addressed.”
“Cask wine has always been filled with cheap wine, so the reputation remains low, but since we launched this last year, we’ve noticed people want to make an environmentally conscious decision when they drink, too,” Imrie says. “Climate change is impacting wine regions, from the lack of water to grow grapes to seeing wine become more expensive as a result.” “Drinking cask wine is a good opportunity to give something back to our kids’ generation and raise awareness by having less of an environmental footprint with our packaging too.” ●

FEATURE HOUSE BALWYN \ 22A NORTHCOTE AVENUE 4

Few inner suburbs have seen such dramatic renewal as Balwyn, particularly along Mont Albert Road. But the more things change, the more they stay the same. Camberwell Grammar (boys’ and girls’ schools) flank the famous street, and Canterbury station is forever walkable. This verdant patch has tree cover above 20 per cent (RMIT 2018), keeping the neighbourhood cool as climate change kicks in. Northcote Avenue is a mixture of new and vintage houses united by leafy goodness. This lustrous new house will soon have shrubbery of its own. For now, it has the scent of fresh-laid oak flooring and the gleam of chic white cabinetry. With three communal areas – open-plan living-dining, a first-floor lounge and a poolside retreat – it promises relaxed, low-maintenance living for a school-aged family. The rear courtyard has a plunge pool and spa in which to revel in the north-easterly aspect. There’s potential, too, for a multigeneration household. Two ground-floor and two first-floor bedrooms offer privacy, and the rear building, with its retreat and bathroom, could easily work as a bedroom suite. Looking sharp in timber slats behind birch trees and a rockery garden, the house presents a striking face. The enclosed porch, part of the tandem garage, makes a pleasantly secluded entrance. The glass-panelled door leads to the oak central hall. Turn sharp left to the main bedroom, at the front with a wardrobe through which you can walk to the fully tiled bathroom (glass shower, matt black tapware) and its door to the light-well courtyard.
FINAL WORD
Bedroom two, without a wardrobe, can double as a study. There’s a bathroom and laundry next door. The open plan is brilliant in oak, with a gas fire in the living area. The kitchen, in white stone with black subway tiles, has a Miele cooktop (wok) and oven, an integrated fridge/ freezer, a Bosch dishwasher and a butler’s pantry. The main house’s carpeted first floor has a lounge and two double bedrooms, each with wardrobes and fully-tiled en suites with showers. The property has video intercom security, solar panels and zoned heating and cooling. ● ALISON BARCLAY property@domainreview.com.au
