The editor’s desk

There’s more to our cover star Jarrod Scott than meets the eye. Yes, he’s a classically attractive supermodel who has walked the catwalks of Europe and graced the cover of fashion magazines the world over, but behind the beauty lies a deeper purpose. Scott is an environmental conservationist, with a particular focus on the Great Barrier Reef. He dives there often and is an ambassador for the charity Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef. In our cover story this week, he talks about his devotion to the reef, his recent appearance on Celebrity Apprentice and a new business venture. ●

Josh Thomas interviews queer icons on his new podcast.

No straight answers

I

t’s five minutes before my interview with actor, comedian and writer Josh Thomas when I realise we will be speaking over a video call. When I tell him I had hurried to put on make-up, he quips, “Nothing’s going to happen between us either way.” He’s stating the obvious, of course – made even more so by the title of his new Audible podcast: How To Be Gay. It’s not actually a how-to but something that evolved because, “I was really interested in having conversations with other queer people and comparing notes. For me, it was a good chance to listen to people, which I’m not typically very good at,” Thomas says. The funnyman, best known for his TV series Please Like Me, says the podcast isn’t really aimed at straight people, but they could still learn some stuff. There’s information for couples who can’t have a baby the traditional way and “a lot of queer wisdom about monogamy, the advantages of being nonmonogamous, and polyamory – straight people are so skittish about those conversations”. “But there’s a lot in it,” he adds.

The other drawcard is the line-up of people. Writers David Sedaris and Dan Savage provided some fan-man moments for Thomas: “Dan’s book Savage Love was next to the toilet when I was growing up. They were people I really looked to, to see what it was like to be queer.” Apart from firing questions at others, he also reveals small bits about himself, including how he told his parents he was gay. Certain aspects were challenging; he chose not to interview a potential subject – a gay conversion therapist – because after their initial conversation, Thomas decided “he was gross”. “I was really surprised how much religion came up, because I didn’t grow up with religion. And the kind of torture that [can sometimes be] done to gay people in the name of religion is so full-on … I didn’t realise that for some people that it was such a struggle, that they were going to disappoint God.” In another episode, he meets Chechen refugee Angel Joy who had to flee the country after its antigay purge because he faced the prospect of torture for his homosexuality.

Wo r d s

Thomas is the first to say that he’s fortunate to live between Melbourne and Los Angeles – cities where it is much easier to be LGBTQIA+. “It’s really hard to be queer if you’re not in a neighbourhood that loves queer people,” he says. “In Australia, I live in Collingwood, and in Los Angeles, I live in West Hollywood, but living in those neighbourhoods is very expensive. “I feel lucky that I get to live in those queer paradises.” He spends three months of the year in Melbourne and still considers Australia home, despite spending most of his time living in the United States. “Australians are so funny. I find them much easier to get along with,” he says. “People in LA, they lie a lot. I find that really weird. Everyone’s hustling in the whole city. People aren’t living for the moment; they’re living for their five-year plan. “In Melbourne, everyone’s just trying to find a nice bit of brunch, and that’s the top priority.” ● HOW TO BE GAY \ now on Audible.

COVER STORY

Daring to dive right in Melbourne supermodel Jarrod Scott has swapped the catwalk for the Celebrity Apprentice boardroom, raising funds for ocean conservation.

J

arrod Scott might have graced the covers of Vogue Hommes International and walked the runway for Givenchy and Chanel, but the Melbourne-born supermodel has started to plan for a different kind of future, making his first foray into the business world. Scott makes his television debut on Celebrity Apprentice Australia – a chance to see what life is like in the hustling fast lane away from the glitz and glam of Paris Fashion Week. Scott is up against actor Vince Colosimo, singer Amy Shark and Real Housewives of Melbourne’s Gamble Breaux, among others, in a bid to win the Apprentice title. “When you have so many strong personalities all doing the same thing on a TV show, it can be quite confronting,” Scott says. “I took the skill set I had into it and applied myself as best as I could on the show.” Finding his groove on TV wasn’t as easy as one might assume for a model who turns heads without trying. But Scott isn’t the sort of guy who enters a room loudly; he doesn’t seek the spotlight – it usually finds him. He’s humble and about as down to earth as it gets in the fickle world he spins in. “The show taught me to collaborate and listen to others and be mindful that there’s more than one person in the team. There has to be a willingness to collaborate and not be set in your stubborn way. Communicating is everything,” he says. A passionate environmentalist, Scott is an ambassador for Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef and has nominated to support the charity if he wins Celebrity Apprentice. He hopes to use his reality TV stint to raise more awareness about the reef’s problems. Scott has always been fascinated by the sea, but he didn’t exactly grow up by the beach – rather among the trees in Gembrook in Melbourne’s east.

“Being a kid in the countryside meant the ocean was always a dreamland that wasn’t very common to me,” he says. “When we went to the beach, it was always an amazing experience. I didn’t take up diving until I was 21 and have been doing it seriously for the past seven [years]. “It got me thinking about the reef and the problems we have, and it inspired me to want to do something philanthropic, but nothing resonated with me until I met with Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef five years ago.” Scott makes regular research expeditions to the Great Barrier Reef, and though a near-death experience while diving at Wilson’s Prom in 2019 made him think twice about heading out again, he has a passion for life below the surface. So much so, he even had his own “dive tank” in his New York apartment when he was based there. “Trying to manage my reef tank and keep it healthy was difficult – and that was a small onemetre-cube situation,” Scott says, noting the scale of the Great Barrier Reef in comparison and how much needs to be done to keep it thriving. He is also a contributor to The Great Reef Census, a project by Citizens of the GBR, the University of Queensland and the Great Barrier Marine Park Authority, which gathers data from the World Heritage-listed site. The survey was first conducted in 2020, when volunteer divers, scientists and tourists submitted more than 13,000 images of the reef to help experts get a true sense of the impact of coral bleaching, extreme weather and other issues. Last year’s results are set to be released soon. “The ocean is an extremely humbling place, but things can go south very quickly,” Scott says. “It gives you a huge reality check regarding how small we are.”

Away from the catwalk and the ocean, he has developed a range of luxury pre-made cocktails with his girlfriend, Brioney Prier (former general manager at Dior Asia Pacific). He says the idea came about during the depths of COVID lockdowns. “My industry was one of the hardest hit in the pandemic, so I had to think quick,” Scott says. “Through modelling, I always leverage relationships and bring people together, and this new business is a perfect example of how to utilise all those relationships.” The pair are set to launch the business (with a name yet to be announced) later this year and will split their time between Melbourne and the south of France to oversee European distribution. Pre-pandemic, Scott would travel the world up to 16 times a year. He lived in New York before basing himself in Paris for two years until he returned to Australia in late 2019. His work schedule is starting to build momentum again, with recent work trips to Turkey and Paris. “Our industry is changing so rapidly, especially with social media and influencers,” Scott says. “They’ve pretty much taken budgets away from creatives because others are doing it for free or close to nothing. There are lots of models and talented photographers out there competing, and there is no guarantee with my job. “The modelling work is slowly coming back, but unless you’re the dozen at the very top in this industry, you need a fallback and to think beyond the obvious.” ● CELEBRITY APPRENTICE \ airs on Channel Nine, Sunday to Wednesday. A

whisky-loving Melburnian who purchased Tasmania’s award-winning whisky distillery Sullivan’s Cove in 2016, is riding the waves of its growing success. Adam Sable, a former lawyer who got a taste for whisky while working with entrepreneur David Prior at Bladnoch Distillery, says success comes to those who leave the distilling process to the experts. In March this year, Sullivan’s Cove won the prestigious Craft Producer of the Year at the World Whisky Awards in London. The accolade shines a light on its powerhouse female distiller, Heather Tillett, who is at the top of her game in a maledominated industry.

whereas our approach is long and laborious.”

Sable has always had an entrepreneurial ambition, but just never quite knew which way he’d land in business. He studied in Washington, DC, and did an internship in New York before moving to Australia and starting his distillery career. “I always knew I wasn’t cut out for law as a career path even though I did practise for a few years,” Sable says. Apart from relocating the distillery to Hobart’s waterfront, there’s no need to tweak the formula of this successful business. “There is no artificial romance to what we do at Sullivan’s Cove. We are open and transparent and tell it like it is,” Sable says. “Almost all distilleries are fixed on efficiency and producing a lot of alcohol in the quickest time frame, whereas our approach is long and laborious. Every step on the way is focused on quality.” ●

Tillett lives in Hobart and works closely with Sable (who is based in Melbourne with his wife and three daughters). They rely on Zoom and daily phone calls to make their liquid gold. Sable commutes to Hobart every three weeks to catch up with his team but invests plenty of trust in those driving the brand. “It’s a team effort that drives our success,” Sable says. “The vast majority of the team is in Hobart. They’re great leaders and keep it going.” At the awards, Sullivans Cove also took out Best Australian Single Cask Single Malt for its American Oak Old & Rare HH0609. It follows awards for World’s Best Single Malt 2018 and 2019.

Sable thrives in his unorthodox workplace – often heading for a surf at Torquay and Anglesea beach with his marketing manager Jerome Lebel-Jones and sales manager Samuel Cumming to catch a wave and strike deals away from the office. “People might laugh at this, but it’s a productive way to do business and it works for us. When you’re not in the office and computer environment it forces you to think a little differently – more creatively,” Sable says. “The three-hour round trip in the car together means we can make business calls, have organic discussions and have together time you don’t really get in an office environment.”

“Almost all distilleries are fixed on efficiency …

FEATURE HOUSE CANTERBURY \ 46 CHAUCER CRESCENT 5

7

5

Canterbury has such good manors or perhaps we should say “manoirs”. The French provincial style has come to the fore in one of the inner east’s most expensive postcodes, and this impressive house near the Chaucer Gardens is a premium example. Amid the luxury there’s plenty to admire about the practical qualities of Psalm, as its current owners call it. Seven communal rooms, a yoga studio, a sauna, a mosaic pool and a wealth of Baccarat and Asfour crystal chandeliers make this three-level, 93-square manor a spectacular address for entertaining, keeping fit and enjoying life while the kids are at school. The fine home cinema is beautifully carpeted and downlit. Tucked in the basement, it adjoins a secluded wine room and Bosch kitchen, a cellar, a bathroom and two storerooms. Oak parquetry brings a nutty warmth to the ground floor’s communal areas and guest bedroom. At the front, the double bedroom has taffeta curtains and a dual-entry marble bathroom with twin basins, a shower and a free-standing bath. The sitting room has a marble Heat & Glo fireplace and is flanked by full-length glazing to the courtyard and deck. The open-plan area (fireplace) opens to the deck and pool. Hovering above the dining area is a school of swarming fish, depicted in ceramic as a contemporary chandelier. The Gaggenau-equipped kitchen has two cooking zones – one for show and one in the large pantry, which has a gas cooktop and convection and microwave wall ovens.

FINAL WORD

Adjoining the pool area are the retreat (bifolds, fireplace), indoor spa, sauna, bathroom and southerly terrace. The first floor has two staircases and two wings. Take the curvy main staircase to the retreat, off which are two double bedrooms with en suites, and a central study with a balcony. The main bedroom has a dressing room and a lustrous marble en suite. There’s a second laundry. In the rear wing, via the second staircase, are the fourth bedroom (en suite, storage) and the attic-style yoga studio. The property has CCTV security, five kilowatt solar electricity, a double garage and a gated driveway. ● ALISON BARCLAY property@domainreview.com.au

DISCRIMINATION IN ADVERTISING IS UNLAWFUL

The Victorian Equal Opportunity Act 1995 makes it unlawful for an advertiser to show any intention to discriminate on the basis of sex, pregnancy, race, age, marital status, political or religious belief or physical features, disability, lawful sexual activity/sexual orientation, HIV/AIDS status or on the basis of being associated with a person with one of the above characteristics, unless covered by an exception under the Act. As Network Classifieds could be legally liable if an unlawful advertisement is printed, Network Classifieds will not accept advertisements that appear to break the law. For more information about discrimination in advertising, contact your legal advisers or the Equal Opportunity Commission.
