But that’s exactly how our cover stars, comedians Dave O’Neil and Glenn Robbins, became friends almost 30 years ago. It was O’Neil who had the gumption to pounce on Robbins after a gig – which makes sense really, as the latter describes himself as “neurotic”. Fed Square didn’t exist when Ralphsmith left Melbourne in 1993, but she remembers the pride of returning home to the city she loved in 2000, just as the now iconic landmark was being built. This year’s PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival was held at Fed Square, during a time when its usual venue – the Royal Exhibition Building – was being used as a vaccination hub. Whether the 2023 version of the festival returns to its old home remains to be seen.

“My brands have changed over time and I have really come to appreciate what I have overlooked – less expensive labels,” Ralphsmith says. “I am certain the festival will open new doors for me, and I want to showcase new labels and their story because that’s what makes Melbourne.”
“It was in that time I explored my individuality and what I liked to wear. It grew from there,” Ralphsmith says. The first to attend university in her family, Ralphsmith rocketed out of high school to do a bachelor of commerce and then an MBA. She was lured to the Big Apple in 1983. “New York felt safe and indulgent, I loved living there. It was all about working hard and playing hard,” Ralphsmith says. Now she has a daughter living out her own NYC dream while studying musical theatre, while her twin sons have just finished university in Melbourne.

Now, the new PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival chief executive, Caroline Ralphsmith, is thrilled to make fashion part of her storyRalphsmith,again. who goes by the name Ralph, was the executive general manager of customer engagement at the Victorian Racing Club for five years and, with her team, created The Park at Flemington – a trackside fashion zone that was much more sartorial than equine. She then did a stint as chief executive at Federation Square in 2021, before landing her new role at the fashion festival.

For Ralphsmith, running a not-forprofit that also happens to be one of the city’s most-loved festivals isn’t just a career pinch-me-moment, it’s a chance to recalibrate what fashion means to her.
Words JANE ROCCA Ralphsmith grew up in the working-class suburb of East Burwood, the eldest of four siblings and the only daughter. Her mother sewed her own clothes and, in turn, inspired a teenaged Ralphsmith to do the same. Her late father, an orphan who began working at the age of 12 in the print-making industry, worked hard to give his children a great start in life.
“My daughter designs her own clothes – she upcycles, goes to vintage stores and makes quirky pieces. It’s very inspiring,” Ralphsmith says.
She’s putting aside her love for designer labels (they are still there, of course) and vintage finds (including 1920s beaded bags) to promote local labels – her quest to extend Melbourne fashion’s global reach.
The mother of three loves her heels, making her towering presence all the more noticeable at events. It certainly meant Ralphsmith stood out when attending Fashion Festival soirees at Government House, keeping the Melbourne media pack ever curious about what she would wear next – and she’d deliver flamboyantly, without stealing anyone’s thunder.
“I really want to create a fashion festival that gives us a reason to return to and reinforce why Melbourne is a true destination worth visiting.” ●

The pair met in the early ’90s at the Botanical Hotel in South Yarra, which O’Neil frequented to watch comedy shows. It was the era of Wendy Harmer, Russell Gilbert and Glenn Robbins – O’Neil’s favourite comedians.
O’Neil says working with Robbins is “just easy”.
While Somehow Related is technically a podcast, it’s delivered and recorded like a live radio show.
“After his comedy spot, I went up to Glenn and told him I was a big fan of his Fast Forward sketch Soggy Pockets with Michael Veitch they played two pissheads at the bar. We got chatting and we’ve been friends ever since.”
“I don’t go in there trying to be funny. I go in trying to be authentic to the idea and let the humour come,” Robbins says. “Dave is a wordsmith, a good writer and funny. I bring a whimsy and humour and he brings a depth of knowledge. When I struggle to find a word he’s there and he’s noncompetitive. Working with him is never a chore, just a joy. I always feel better coming out of the podcast recording than I did going in.” There are many similarities between the two – they are each

“I only did two scenes in the first season and I get to do a few more in the second season. It was joyful and I feel lucky I get to work with her. It is as much fun as you would imagine. “It’s like when I was working with Jane Turner and Gina Riley. I’d put on my Kel outfit and walk out on set and they’d immediately start laughing and I knew I didn’t have to do much more to pedal the bike in the right direction.”
Robbins is not one to chase projects or the spotlight, and says he was not expecting Kath & Kim to become so big.
“We have our ritual and it revolves around food – that’s the incentive,” says O’Neil who, before pursuing comedy in the 1990s, trained as a schoolteacher, worked in PR (until he got sacked) and played in bands around Melbourne.
“I immediately said ‘yes’ to Kitty because I love and trust her,” Robbins says. “Then she proceeded to tell me she wanted me to play a guy who paints portraits with his penis. I was like, OK then.

M elbourne comedians and long-time friends Dave O’Neil and Glenn Robbins often head to The Grandview Hotel in Fairfield after recording two episodes back-toback of their conversational podcast Somehow Related. Robbins is always tempted to order the chicken parmigiana, but leaves that for O’Neil and opts for the chicken salad instead. If they’re not at The Grandview, you’ll find them sharing a burger at Kelso’s in Abbotsford.
The past two years saw Robbins and O’Neil bond like never before, recording podcasts remotely when lockdown was well underway, and being there for each other despite the lack of work opportunities.
“He was my mentor on The Panel and is still a huge inspiration. We get asked to do gigs all the time, but these days he’s not so big on that, unless it’s a town by the ocean, then he’ll say ‘yes’.”
“Dave struck me as a smart, funny and easy-going person. I am prone to get panicked, but he calms your farm and I enjoy his company,” says Robbins, an Australian comedic icon best known for his role as Kel Knight on Kath & Kim and for his outback adventuring character Russell Coight. He finished filming the second season of ABC’s Fisk earlier this year. Before the first season, writer and star Kitty Flanagan said she had written a character part for him in her new comedy show.
“Only white men did comedy back then, and a few women. No diversity to be found at all,” he says.

“I re-evaluated what was important,” Robbins says. “My stepdaughter had a couple of kids and we got close to our grandchildren in that time ... and built a beautiful relationship.” Sadly, Robbins lost his mother during COVID and was unable to visit her in her final stages. Where O’Neil is most outspoken and loud, Robbins is the quieter of the“Itwo.tend to be neurotic and overthink things and I get stuck in my head a bit,” Robbins says. “I understand the perils of what people went through in lockdown, and what they might still be going through. It’s tough, and having a mate like Dave to talk to certainly added plenty of laughs in the mix despite the crazy times we were in.”
“I remember when I first did Kath & Kim, I thought it probably won’t work out, but it’ll be fun doing it and nothing will change that,” Robbins says. “It obviously went on to be a huge success – and it’s a constant reminder that with anything you do, you don’t know until you know.”

Bak kut teh (known as BKT) is another dish I always order when I spot it on a menu.
The ribs barely require chewing: simply suck off the bone in one fell swoop.
It is believed Hokkien immigrants from China’s Fujian province introduced BKT to Malaysia and Singapore in the early 1900s – though there is some dispute over which country lays claim to the dish.
The tofu has the texture of firm creme caramel with a thin, golden exterior and a pale yellow centre. It arrived beneath an avalanche of pork mince in sweet, sticky sauce, causing a reaction akin to the diner scene in When Harry Met Sally

I didn’t want to drive 30 kilometres to Glen Waverley at 2pm on a Wednesday, but I’m glad I did. Anyone who has their dog professionally groomed knows how hard it is to land an appointment post-lockdown. That’s how I ended up killing time at Nan Yang Kopitiam – waiting for my precious toy poodle to finish her hair appointment. Wedged between a bubble tea store and hair salon, Nan Yang Kopitiam specialises in Malaysian hawker“Kopi”food.isthe Malay word for coffee and “tiam” is Hokkien for shop. You’ll find them all around Singapore and Malaysia, melding colonial influences with traditional Chinese flavours in breakfast sets of kaya (caramelised coconut jam) spread on toast with soft-boiled eggs (and yes, dunking is encouraged). It’s just one of the Malaysian breakfast sets available at Nan Yang between 10am and noon. You can also order noodles dry or in soup, roti canai or fried vermicelli with a fried egg – all with a drink. Nan Yang is a simple room with red vinyl chairs and murals on the walls, but the menu is the kind I read four times to narrow down my order.
Fundamentally, it’s pork rib soup served with rice and pickled mustard greens, but the clear, herbal broth tastes like it could cure a global pandemic.

The soup is muddy with belacan (shrimp paste) but lifts with fresh lime, lemongrass and galangal. You’ll pick up spices such as star anise and cloves, and it’s also bobbing with vermicelli noodles, prawns, chicken, bean sprouts and omelette.
Nan Yang has the kind of menu that makes you feel like you are overseas, and it only took me half an hour to get there.

“We have Pacific oysters and Tasmanian blue mussels from our very own farm here in Coles Bay, along with a list of produce that covers most corners of Tasmania,” he says. “Atlantic salmon from the west, octopus from the north, scallops from Bass Strait, sea urchin roe from our very own waters and abalone and rock lobster from every direction.”
As the sun begins to set, head back to base to soak in the view one last time before the night blankets the mountain peaks, rolling pastures and Devil’s Corner Lookout – a striking piece of contemporary architecture, which won the people’s choice at the 2019 Tasmania Architecture Awards.
For something a little lighter, order the tasting paddle of five varietals – including sparkling cuvee, chardonnay and pinot noir – alongside a cheese box and set up a picnic on the hill. Next on the list and not far from here – via a fullexperience Gator ride through the grape rows if you’re lucky – are the crisp waters of Freycinet Marine Farm. Its Oyster Bay Tours take you around the farm, where you can don some very attractive waders and harvest and shuck your own oysters.
An easy climb up the stairs gives a bird’s-eye view of where the day started. A distant glimmer catches our attention. At first I think it’s the moon hitting the lagoon but, to my surprise, it is the white flickers of the butterflies waving us goodbye.
Raised amid the untamed elements of this part of Tassie, the cool-climate wines made here are something special, born from a generous kiss of the sun’s rays combined with the east-coast sea breeze and lashing of storms synonymous with the region.
After savouring a selection of their wines, to further nourish your senses you can choose from the winery’s two venues: Tombolo Freycinet for rustic wood-fired pizza made to order and Fishers of Freycinet for local seafood. Both offer seasonal menus and, of course, wine pairing.

Owner of The Outback Chef and Phillip Island’s Wild Food Farm, Jude Mayall is hosting a masterclass in which making sweets gets a boozy makeover. The confectioner, who has a love of native ingredients, wants to show punters how to create something sweet for adults only. She grows her ingredients on a four-hectare native food farm where you’ll find everything from lemon myrtle to native basil. Mayall says using liqueurs in cooking is about being creative.

Nick Tesar (co-founder of Victorian liqueur producers Marionette) works at Bar Liberty three nights a week making Blue Japanese Slipper cocktails for those keen to riff on a good night out, but this winter he’s also teaching punters how to keep it together with a masterclass on “no-lo” cocktails at Holy Water. And before you ask the question – yes, you can make a low-alcoholic cocktail without compromising the flavour; it’s all in the art of composition.
At Marionette, it’s all about shining a light on liqueurs and why they matter in cocktails. Tesar says most people don’t know how to use liqueurs, and he wants to shift our perspective.
“Liqueur is such a small part of a drink, but so integral and it’s there to build flavour in a cocktail and is the tool that determines the fate of the drink,” he says. From the much-hyped dry cassis to amaretto, Marionette brings a hint of sexy back to liqueurs and works with local farmers to bring the best native ingredients to the final product.
