There’s nothing worse than having a sick child. Even a cold makes most parents feel helpless, seeing their little ones suffer through is gutwrenching. It’s something our cover star Michala Banas knows her own parents went through frequently when she was a child. Banas was born with a kidney defect that left her unwell for the first six years of her life, until it was discovered – thanks to the perseverance of her parents. Now, Banas wants everyone to make kidney checks a part of their regular health routine – and she’s getting the message out by laughing with a good mate. ●

SHUTTER’S
A family trip proves Sydney’s food scene caters to all tastes.
Foodie harbour S pringtime in Sydney is the dopamine hit that Melburnians crave after a wintry blast that feels endless in the southern state. And who doesn’t love a 21-degree morning by 9am in this harbour city – it certainly makes all the difference. A four-day family trip up here is a huge success when you’ve got the kids covered – from ferry trips to Luna Park to time spent at inner-city beaches like Clovelly. A pitstop at Gowings Bar at QT Sydney for oysters and a cheeky spin on a classic negroni is sure to keep the adults happy (and sane). We stayed at The Fullerton Hotel on Martin Place – an ideal starting point for those who want everything within reach, from buses to Bondi, ferries to Manly and shopping at Pitt Street Mall and surrounding streets. The light rail will get you from Circular Quay to Moore Park. Located in the heritage-listed former GPO site, The Fullerton Sydney offers five-star accommodation

with 416 rooms, friendly staff and promptly delivered in-room dining. Make sure you book a package with breakfast included – the perfect way to kick-start the day with a buffet offering everything from eggs and bacon to dahl and congee. We highly recommend the madeto-order omelette. There’s 24-hour room service, and the in-room dining is a reasonable option. On the menu are classic burgers and laksa, while children’s meals are locked in at $14 and below. There’s a pillow menu for fussy sleepers and our spacious premium tower room on the upper levels provided plenty of comfort and quiet. Our bathroom had a toilet, a large bath and a walk-in shower. Ideal for families. White & Wong’s at 25 Martin Place is a bustling yet casual Asian fusion restaurant. It’s a flavour overload here – we loved the duck pancakes, thick ribbons of pad thai and fresh oysters. Salt-and-

pepper squid and parcels of prawn dumplings were a huge hit, too. Beckett’s Bar and Dining in Glebe is an absolute must for a top fine-dining experience. Chef Jeff Schroeter brings three decades of culinary kudos to this French-inspired bistro where quality and his pursuit of excellence stand out. His playwright-director wife, Wendy, is responsible for the tactile interiors of velvet green and timber that nods to Euro-chic and French bistro elegance, and you feel the warmth on all fronts from service to the food. From gin-cured salmon with cucumber and fennel to porcini and spinach arancini, foie gras with strawberries and roasted scallops served with peas, the starters are morsels of happiness. The grilled prawns are sourced from the Gulf country. For mains, we devoured a shared-style wagyu sirloin with pommes frites, salad and potato gratin. Stay for the coffee creme brulee. Shutters at Coogee makes for an excellent preswim lunch spot with a view of the beach as you dine. It has a summery setting where pasta with prawns, eggplant Milanese, crisp salads and a kids’ menu keep everyone happy. ●

ENTERTAINMENT
The magic of music Myf Warhurst looks back on a life of love and music in her memoir.
F
rom sticky-carpet gigs to living in run-down rentals in West Melbourne, Australian TV and radio personality Myf Warhurst’s new memoir turns to the soundtrack of her life to reveal how her taste in music led to a long-running career on the airwaves and the small screen. In Time of My Life, Warhurst revels in the past to paint a picture of how a girl from Red Cliffs in Victoria became obsessed with the inner city, with stories of sharing a Collingwood rental with Something for Kate’s Paul and Steph Dempsey, and doing a stint behind the bar at the Town Hall in North Melbourne while studying at Melbourne University. And you can’t help but wish a music bus tour would accompany the release of this entertaining read. From The White Stripes playing at her friend’s birthday party at the now defunct 9th Ward Basement Bar in the CBD to a rave she attended at Docklands as we freaked out about Y2K in 2000, Warhurst shares the highs and lows, the good and bad and never regrets her musical taste along the way. She cut her teeth on rock ’n’ roll, at first guided by older brothers, but quickly found her own way around exploring all its shapes and sizes from goth to punk and rock to indie and country music. There were endless gigs at The Tote, The Punters Club, The Evelyn and The Rochester, and her musical love led to a radio gig at Triple J. But Warhurst actually turned away from music to process the loss of an ex-boyfriend – musician Mike Noga
– when writing this book. He died of a brain aneurysm in 2020, spurred on by a bout of drinking induced by a battle with anxiety that had plagued him for years. The couple met at a SLAM rally to save live music in Melbourne in 2010. They travelled to Spain and settled in London for a while until Myf decided to come back to Australia to help launch Double J. “I wanted to honour Mike in this book because when someone dies so young, you’re the keeper of their stories and no one else knows them,” Warhurst says. “This is my way of making sure people remember him, and I did it in consultation with his family. “I wanted to be honest about what happened between us, and it turns out the book is more open than I expected it to be,” she adds. “I went through a process of dealing with myself and Mike’s death in lockdown, and all the bullshit of life went out the window.
“There is something freeing about facing things that are difficult to discuss.” MYF WARHURST
“That is something I take with me going forward. “There is something freeing about facing things that are difficult to discuss. I am nearly 50 now, and a lot of things that mattered once don’t any more,” she says. “Writing the book has been great to reflect on my past, but this was probably the teariest I got when putting it together.” ● TIME OF MY LIFE \ Hachette Australia.

COVER STORY
Kidding for kidneys
I
n fits of giggles, acclaimed actor Michala Banas wriggles and wrestles her way out of a giant replica kidney costume, trying not to trip over the bulbous clown shoes adorning her feet. But, spurred on by her good friend, actor Stephen Curry, she’s hamming it up for a cause very close to home. Banas, 43, was born with a defect in her left kidney, which wasn’t discovered until she was almost six. Detected in the nick of time, she had most of her kidney and part of her bladder removed during a marathon life-saving operation. Along with her own battle, her nephew Luca also suffers from kidney disease. Grateful for the second chance at life, Banas and Curry, whose friend Lesley is awaiting a kidney transplant, are fronting a new campaign urging Australians to get their kidneys checked as part of their regular health routine. “My parents knew instinctively that something really wasn’t right, and thank goodness they persisted in getting me help,” she says. “After the operation, the doctor told them that, had they waited a few more weeks, I would’ve died.” Despite achieving her first film credit at the age of five, New Zealand-born Banas spent her formative years chronically unwell, suffering painful infections. “I still vividly remember my dad crushing up tablets into raspberry jam to help me swallow medication,” she grimaces. “I was sick all the time. Because I was so little, it didn’t really

affect me as much as it affected my parents, but now ... I look back and think, ‘my poor mum and dad’. What a terrible time for them.” Her parents, John and Laurinda, couldn’t understand why their little girl was constantly unwell. As Banas’ sixth birthday loomed with no answers, instinct told them it was time to take matters into their own hands. They found a new doctor who sent the family straight to hospital for tests that revealed Banas had a duplicated ureter – the tube from the kidney to the bladder. Normally a single ureter sends waste from the kidney to the bladder to be urinated out of the body, but in Banas’ case, the second tube was circulating the waste back into her system. Her body was effectively poisoning itself to death. “The operation was supposed to take two hours, but in fact took six; it was pretty full on,” she recalls. “Most of my left kidney was removed and part of my bladder. I was in hospital for a while afterwards, but once I recovered from the operation, I immediately had a different life, the change was extraordinary, and I’ve lived a very healthy, normal life ever since.” The gut instinct that served her parents so well is a shared family trait, which has guided Banas to a stellar career on stage and screen. An accomplished singer and actor, she has starred in more than 40 productions, including Hollywood’s much-hyped Joe vs. Carole drama series and the blockbuster Scooby-

Doo film, which took $153 million at the box office. But it is perhaps her role as the feisty, f-bomb-dropping Amber Wheeler in the ABC comedy Upper Middle Bogan that endeared Banas to Australian audiences. “On the day of the audition, I was dressed up for the role of Bess, but I rang my agent and said, ‘I don’t think I should do this. I really want to audition for Amber – I love her’. I have never done that before.” Although her agent argued that she should stick to the role of Bess, Banas took the risk and, channelling every ounce of bogan she could muster, she threw in an impromptu, unscripted burp into her lines and landed the role.

“Stephen rang me up and said, ‘mate, you’ve only got one kidney, and I’ve got this friend who is ill; let’s do something together’. We get along so well, and I adore him; we both have the same sense of humour,” Banas says. Unleashed in a studio, they wrote a song and filmed a series of sketches to promote Kidney Health Australia’s Red Socks Run appeal, which raises funds to support the 25,000 Australians living with kidney failure. On average, 63 people die every day with kidney-related disease, and 1.5 million people are unaware they have the early markers of kidney disease. “Instead of trying to be serious, we leaned into our silly way of handling
“We aren’t making light of the subject, but we are trying to deliver a health message in a light-hearted, fun way.” “After I got the role, the producer Robyn Butler told me it was the burp that sealed it,” she laughs. “It’s about trusting your gut instinct, that same thing my parents did.” Jokes and burps aside, Banas takes kidney health very seriously. Today, she limits her alcohol and maintains a healthy diet and can often be seen chasing her adorable pup Gordon along the beaches near the Bayside home she shares with her husband, actor Toby Truslove. Pairing up with Curry to work on the campaign was a no-brainer.
things, and we had a ball doing it,” Banas says. “We aren’t making light of the subject, but we are trying to deliver a health message in a lighthearted, fun way because that’s the kind of people we are. “It’s about encouraging people to get their kidneys checked because you can lose 90 per cent of your kidney function before you have any symptoms, and it’s too late then. If you can make it part of your annual check-up ... it can save lives.” ● RED SOCK APPEAL \ kidney.org.au

“As a plus-size person for most of my life, I spent countless hours at shopping centres trying to find cute, affordable clothing that actually fitted me,” she says. “Over the past couple of years, more and more brands have extended their sizing, and it’s become a lot easier to find clothes that suit my own personal style, so I like to share that so others are inspired to do the same.” She does “try-ons” in store or at home – without shapewear – so she can demonstrate a true size 20 body. “Try-ons are such a great way to connect with my followers and show them what clothes will look like on a body shape that’s similar to theirs. “So many people are shopping online, but plus-size brands for some reason don’t use models above a size 14/16 in their photos. So, it’s really hard to judge what the clothes will look like.”
Thrift stylist Faye De Lanty is another Melbourne fashionista who has parlayed her sense of style into a cult following. Her page combines two of her great loves: fashion and storytelling. Her signature look? Style isn’t about how much you spend. She even wrote a book about it: Opshopulance: How to Make Thrift Store Look Like Couture and Save the Planet. “This is me trying to convert people to thrifting and sustainability but also helping them save money, spark ideas and tap into their creativity,” she says. De Lanty has scored some highend designer items on her adventures but mostly draws inspiration from runway shows and fashion weeks, then puts her spin on it with “thrifted” items.

“It’s not about how much you spend or a label; it’s about how you interpret it. People identify with that, and it empowers them to go ‘she created a Chanel look for $20, so maybe I’ll go and try that’, and there’s a sense of achievement, too.” She never judges a garment by its original form and shops in the men’s section for tailored blazers, shirts and tees that can be worn for an oversized look, or turns a scarf into a top or a belt. Op shopping isn’t just about sustainability but supporting a worthy cause. “The money you spend goes straight into the mission of a charity; that’s the bigger picture and what our fashion dollar can do,” De Lanty says. Sarah-Elyss Duffus lives by her Instagram handle: style not size.

She pulls together size-inclusive outfits for everyday people that replicate a celebrity look or trend. She started her account selling vintage pieces and then began sharing her own outfits as a hobby while working as a graphic designer. A shout-out from a fellow fashionista in 2019 saw her following triple, and she was on her way. “It started as a creative outlet that wasn’t paid or based on anything other than a hobby,” Duffus says. “I try to keep it real and make sure it’s an honest and uplifting space. I buy from brands I can afford, shop within my means, and I think that’s an accessible budget range shopping at Kmart, Target or Suzanne Grae.” Her Same Same Just Bigger series of video reels shines a light on plussize fashion. “I would love for … brands to know plus-size is not a niche market,” she says. ●

FEATURE HOUSE CAMBERWELL \ 23 STANHOPE GROVE 4

When the Prospect Hill Estate was laid out in 1881, it was all about the miracle of the railway, especially Camberwell station, which opened the following year. But it’s the houses of the early 1900s that express a hilarity we can still feel today. The 1890s depression is over – yay! Let’s build grand and make merry! And they did, this belle of 1907 being a lavish example. The single-level, double-brick house was a classic “gentleman’s villa” of its time. It still is. Wrapped in a landscaped garden with a pool, barbecue deck and north-south tennis court on 1656 square metres, this is an executive residence to enchant the school-aged families who prize a strategic address. The current owners, here since 2007, have made a magnificent renovation. Japanned floorboards meet white walls and restored fireplaces, some of marble, others of polished timber with Art Nouveau floral tiles. The hall, sitting, and dining rooms have Wunderlich pressed-metal ceilings that bring flowery flair to these formal areas. To the right, the original dining room has a timber fireplace. Across the hall, double doors lead to the sitting room, whose mullioned bay window faces north. Adjoining it are the modern living (gas fireplace) and dining areas, where fullheight sliders lead to the L-shaped, covered deck above the pool and court. Master chefs will appreciate the kitchen, served by a massive calacatta marble island, two Bertazzoni ovens, a gas cooktop, a walk-in pantry and a three-door Miele fridgefreezer. A laundry with external access adjoins the pantry.
