It’s that time of year again when the equine and sartorial enthusiasts align for a season of punts, cheers and hats. Yes, the spring racing carnival is upon us and this year, racing fans will be back at Flemington in person, and some may well be attending for the first time. Our cover star, VRC ambassador Christian Wilkins, says this year’s updated rules for Fashions on the Field – doing away with the male and female categories – will attract a new crowd to the track. This week’s edition is all about spring – so even if you’re not off to the races, we have you covered. ●

SPRING RACING
Back on track T he Valley holds a special place in the heart of racing expert and presenter Lizzie Jelfs. The boutique Moonee Valley course is where her love affair with Australian racing began, with Fields of Omagh first winning the Cox Plate in 2003. This year, more than two decades later, Jelfs returns to The Valley as race ambassador. The 46-year-old, who was born in Oxford, England, and followed her life-long love of horses to the other side of the world, says it will be emotional to have racegoers back in the stands on October 22 after the pandemic affected the past two spring carnivals. “It’s really special to be involved with The Valley and the Cox Plate,” she says. “It’s the race that really got me hooked on Australian racing. “When I first came over here I worked for Lindsay Park, working with Tony McEvoy. I’d come out from England, I didn’t know a lot about racing, I just loved horses. “I got the opportunity to ride a horse called Fields of Omagh; he had an injury so I was the lightest one and they wanted to keep the lightest person on him all the time to keep the weight off his legs. “I’d ride this lovely horse and you grow an affection and connection when you work with a horse one-onone for a long time. “He was working into this big race called the Cox Plate and that’s when I noticed everyone was talking about racing. “I couldn’t believe how big it was in Melbourne because it’s not like that in England. It’s not on the front pages of the paper or on the news.” With its amphitheatre style and intimate design, The Valley has been home to some of racing’s biggest moments. “It’s unique, and everyone

who visits The Valley for that particular weekend of racing, it’s one they never forget,” Jelfs explains. “You look at the champions that have won the Cox Plate – Winx, Makybe Diva and go back years to absolute champions like Kingston Town. “I think it’s the uniqueness of the track; Field of Omagh was a better horse at that track. It takes different types of athletes to be able to perform there. “I feel like it’s the enthusiasts’ race, the purists’ race. It’s the race we all watch because of the great horses that have won it in years gone by and the horses that will continue to win it in the future.” The respected analyst joined Seven’s racing coverage earlier this year and is aware of her impact on the next generation. “Recently at Randwick, there was a little girl with her parents and she was just looking at Emma Freedman and I doing the races,” Jelfs says. “And I bet you she was thinking, ‘That’s so cool. How did they get there? How can I do that?’ “You can’t be what you can’t see, so I hope we show what’s possible. I’m from a non-racing family, I have followed my passion for loving horses, worked hard and that’s how I’ve ended up in this position.” This Cox Plate could be even more memorable for Jelfs, who is connected with English trainer Annabel Neasham. “When we talk about female trainers, Gai Waterhouse has never won a Cox Plate. Annabelle’s got potentially three runners in the race and she’s got [champion jockey] Jamie Kah on one of those horses,” she says. “They would be the first female trainer-jockey combination and Jamie could be the first female jockey to win the Cox Plate. “It’s a really good year to be involved.” ●

hristian Wilkins still remembers walking into Flemington’s invitation-only Birdcage for the first time on Derby Day after finishing year 12, swept up by the excitement of the track and, of course, the fashion. Now the 27-year-old model, social media inf luencer and TV personality joins the Victorian Racing Carnival as its newest ambassador; spruiking the updated Fashions on the Field competition categories of Best Suited and Best Dressed – where almost anything goes. The all-inclusive categories are open to everyone, but certainly pitched to a younger crowd who may not have entertained the idea of heading to the track or entering the competition. It’s the era for ditching stereotypes and ruff ling the feathers in the Birdcage and beyond – and Wilkins is excited. “The VRC is an institution that is prepared to move with the times. That is a good thing,” he says. “They want to create a place where acceptance and inclusion is important.” Wilkins is all about bringing back the trackside hype to Flemington, with plenty of queer cheer to
be had, and to most of all encourage the LGBTQI+ community to tap into their sartorial f lamboyance at FOTF. According to Wilkins, when it comes to honing your look for Best Suited or Best Dressed, it all comes down to wearing what makes you feel comfortable. Known for mixing and matching his attire, he has always liked fusing feminine and masculine silhouettes in the name of fashion. At the track, that can be pairing trousers with a dress. “Fluid dressing is about removing the traditional gendered parameters,” Wilkins says. “When dressing for the Best Suited category, I think it’s about finding colours, shapes and textures that are outside of the traditional masculine-shaped threepiece suit. Personally, it makes me think of a gorgeous off-the-shoulder suit I wore a few years ago to Derby Day.” Not all tradition is lost at Flemington, with the dress code in the members’ areas remaining unchanged – for now. Die-hard Fashions on the Field entrants will have outfits and millinery custom-made, with many gowns and ensembles
“Conversations have shifted in Australia about what it means to be gender fluid and accepted.”

inspired by international runway trends, while others dip into vintage archives. “Once you’re at Flemington and around likeminded people all there for the fashion and excitement it’s hard to not get excited,” Wilkins says. “There is nowhere else in Australia where people put so much effort into their looks. I love fashion and any form of self-expression and in Australia the Spring Racing Carnival is the pinnacle of those two things at the races.” Newly signed to LA modelling agency Other People’s Children, Wilkins is also looking beyond his latest partnership with the VRC to expand his work opportunities.

“Modelling is something I’d like to do more of, and hopefully some great things will happen now that I have an agency on board,” he says. In 2020, Wilkins appeared as a contestant on Australia’s Dancing with the Stars, and soon after made his acting debut in the Stan series Eden, which was filmed in Byron Bay. Last year, he was named the first male ambassador for Pantene and has built his social media presence working with Binge, Grey Goose, Australian Star Logies and ModelCo. He also appears regularly for E! Entertainment as their fashion and style expert. Accompanied by his TV entertainment reporter father Richard Wilkins, Christian attended the TV Week Logie Awards held on the Gold Coast in August, stepping out on the red carpet in a sheer dress. He copped some criticism but has learnt to not take notice of the negative comments. “I was lucky to be very supported from a young age by my parents with my identity,” Wilkins says. “My parents never made me feel I had to question myself and I never did, and through that support I was able to form a sense of identity.” The trolls continue to surface from time to time – especially when Wilkins posts a beauty regimen on TikTok or wears a party dress – but, for the most part, he’s happy to be an inspiration for those struggling with gender identity. “I love what I do and I love what I wear, and if I am able to create visibility for other LGBTQI+ community, then that is all the better,” says Wilkins, who is bringing his stepsister Estella and his older sister Rebecca to Oaks Day. He counts Australian queer designers Alix Higgins and Erik Yvon among his favourites, while Gucci, Schiaparelli and Jean Paul Gaultier hit the spot internationally. How you go about f luid dressing at the track comes down to doing what suits you, he says. “I love colour, sparkles and structure. We are seeing some really beautiful textiles at the moment with amazing textures. Gloves are making a big comeback, and very exaggerated proportions, a la Jean Paul Gaultier and Mugler, which are just phenomenal,” Wilkins says. “But most of all, I would say wear whatever feels comfortable and have fun. Conversations have shifted in Australia about what it means to be gender f luid and accepted. “It’s a privilege that we are heading in the right direction to allow people to feel able to talk about what is important to them. We are accepting that we are all unique people, and just because we’re different doesn’t mean we’re bad people.” ●

So Soiree, Melbourne Fringe not a program for kids,” says Nicole Warren, from the City of Stonnington, which has put this extravaganza on as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. The pop-up garden bar “has got a beautiful European feel”, she says. A must-see show? Up Late With Kate, a Kate Bush tribute show. The rest of the Melbourne Fringe Festival includes 450 shows which are there for the picking.

At Open House Bendigo, “there is an opportunity to think about the symbiotic relationship between our natural environment and the built one”, says executive director and chief curator Fleur Watson. She says the program looks at some of the new buildings in the city as an invitation to think “about what it means to design on country”.
The festival, showcasing local and international films, is now in its 32nd year. The opening-night movie is Private Desert, which also kicks off the MQFF’s spotlight on Brazil. Meanwhile, the big Australian movie, according to chief executive David Harris, is The Longest Weekend. “It’s going to be a cult classic about three siblings who come back to their family home to reconcile with their father,” he says. Uýra: The Rising Forest closes the festival, coinciding with the Trans Day of Remembrance, to be held on the rooftop of the Victorian Pride Centre. But it’s not all about celluloid. “The bar on the rooftop will be where audiences can socialise and meet the community, with music,” Harris says. “We’ll also be activating at ACMI, the spiritual home of MQFF, and at its Hero bar.” There will also be a dedicated space for “rainbow families”, he says. ●

hen junior costumier for the Queensland Ballet Bethany Cordwell entered her outfit for the Emerging Designer Award at the Melbourne Cup’s Fashions on the Front Lawn last year, she never thought it would lead to Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Beyonce noticing her clever creation. “I never in my wildest dreams would have thought that entering a fashion competition based in Melbourne would lead to Beyonce’s stylists noticing my costume on Instagram, but that’s exactly how it happened,” says Cordwell. The 25-year-old designer, who picked up the prestigious prize, asked her good friend Chelsea Dawson (of Six the Musical) to display the gown for the Emerging Designer category in 2021. The rest is history in the making for this rising fashion star. Made from 20,000 cut plastic scales in fuchsia pink and black, the creation was inspired by the designer’s part-time job at Officeworks – where she’d stare at plastic wallets in all their pretty colours and imagine them as a dress. “I love working with intricate detailed textures and creating new materials and finishes,” says Cordwell of her unique entry. “When I look at the outfit a year on, I realise how much work and dedication I put into it. Many hours were dedicated to cutting individual shapes and individually sewing them on the dress. It really represents a true labour of love.” Cordwell, who has been a costumier at Queensland Ballet since 2019, became close friends with Dawson while fitting her for a different show – Shrek the Musical. “Chelsea and I hit it off as friends and she was the first person I thought

would look fabulous in this outfit for the competition entry,” Cordwell says. An article featured in Vogue Australia saw the designer’s following grow on social media, with inquiries hitting her inbox at a rapid rate ever since. “Winning at Flemington gave me the confidence to start showing my work online,” Cordwell says. “I wasn’t that confident before. Then the Vogue article came out and my profile went ‘boom’. “The dress appeared on Up Next Designer’s Instagram account. They shared my work in February and I didn’t know until I got an email from Beyonce’s stylist saying they wanted a bodysuit for her to wear. “The Instagram account is where a lot of celebrities and their stylists go to find the latest in emerging looks. I originally thought the email from Beyonce’s team was a hoax. I literally thought it was someone playing tricks on me.” With no time to make Beyonce a bodysuit, Cordwell sent the singer an existing one. “I was lucky it worked out and she could wear it. I didn’t know of her decision until Beyonce posted a photo of her wearing my bodysuit,” she says. Beyonce can be seen wearing the black and white bodysuit in the official artwork that accompanies her album Renaissance, released in late July. Cordwell says emerging designers should always look to local competitions because one never knows who is really watching. “I had no idea Melbourne Cup would turn into such a fortuitous move for me,” she says. “And now I always have some designs on the go and at the ready to enter when I can.” ●

hoosing a wedding venue to celebrate your big day doesn’t need to be a high-maintenance as Instagram might have you believe. Sure, the pandemic has seen many large party-sized venues booked out months in advance, but the rise in unusual locations such as private dining rooms for a midweek soiree and those involving ferrying your guests across the bay could be just the ticket for your nuptials.

Coco Republic is also styling and furnishing the community’s shared amenities. Pam and her partner are moving from a double-storey, four-bedroom home to a three-bedroom, two-
bathroom, two-car apartment at Ardency Kennedy Place. They were already excited about the move but are even more so, after experiencing precisely how their new home will look and feel furnished. To cap it off, their designer will manage the delivery, placement and styling of items sourced from Coco Republic. After buying their apartment, Pam naturally had a few things to contemplate with regard to settling into a new space. “I was considering the amount of natural light in our living area on a grey day and how to use the smallest bedroom as our den,” she says. “Also, we had big furniture which would never fit at Richmond. I had no idea how I would pull it together – it is a big change.” She leapt at the opportunity of getting styling and furnishing advice. The couple met with interior designer Jarred Pior at Coco Republic’s showroom for an in-depth interview and a “sit test” of various sofas and chairs.

A fortnight later, they returned for a two-hour consultation, including a 3D mood-board presentation of each room showing colours, furnishings and placement. Jarred suggested three long mirrors to lighten the living area and advised them to use the larger room for their den, as it has three windows and space for a desk and pull-out bed. His style and furnishing advice included furniture, artwork and homewares, plus a new dining table to match their existing chairs. “Jarred had considered all of our thoughts and resolved our issues,” Pam says. “I can’t speak highly enough of the service – it will help us make the most of the next 20-plus years of our lives.” Coco Republic commercial manager Stephanie Sanders and her team regularly style luxury retirement living. She says Coco Republic’s timeless aesthetic, using natural textures such as linen, wool and marble, means furnishings bought now will look just as good in 10 years. Their bespoke interior schemes can cover part or all of an apartment or provide a complete turnkey service with everything from bed linen and other homewares to artwork. “Our designers consider how buyers like to live, who will live with them, if they have pets, if grandchildren visit, whether they socialise and their style preferences,” Sanders says. “We can also recommend placement and hanging services for personal art.” “It’s a great opportunity for buyers to start afresh for the next part of their lives, with all new furnishings and homewares designed for their personal style and lifestyle.” ● LIZ MCLACHLAN

ustralians have had a long love affair with al fresco living and the outdoor room, but that passion has moved to a whole new level in the past few years, especially after COVID-19 swept the nation. As the weather heats up, more of us are spending time and money creating an outdoor living and entertaining space that is welcoming and stylish, says Pru Morgan, the manager of Cosh Living’s store in Richmond. “Australians have always enjoyed an indoor-outdoor lifestyle – gathering with friends and family outdoors in good weather is at the heart of how people come together,” she says. “But outdoor living has been even more appreciated since the pandemic and the lockdowns. “People have realised how outdoor living spaces can be a cherished escape, and they’ve become true extensions of our home.”
Cosh Living’s range of Australian and European-designed outdoor furniture and accessories include everything you need to create the perfect spring entertaining space. Staff have design backgrounds and can use this knowledge to help customers envision what they can create within their outdoor space. “Teak remains popular because it is the best-quality outdoor timber and beautiful to touch,” Morgan says. “Softer, rounded shapes are popular, and this summer, we are also seeing a lot of earthy themes and neutral base colours warmed up with terracotta and greens. “They are colours that work with nature and that add a hint of warmth and luxury to any outdoor setting.” Considering an upgrade? It’s worth making a couple of investments before summer rolls around. Morgan says an extendable dining table is a good place to start as it’s

great for hosting. This style allows you to host large groups of guests with ease and then return the table back to its everyday size. “The Addis looks fantastic with a mix of both chairs and benches, which come in handy as you can squeeze more people around the table,” she explains. When it comes to relaxing after lunch, a modular sofa is ideal for creating a full seating area to accommodate your guests. Choose one that is big enough to lie on or to host a gathering, and add accent chairs. The extra-soft outdoor cushion filling makes the Nodi sofa a supremely comfortable option, as well as one of the most adaptable. Each module is sold separately, so you can configure a sofa to suit your space, and there is a wide range of durable outdoor fabric options to choose from. “You can leave the sofa cushions out in the rain, and it won’t matter,” Morgan says. “If you spill red wine, you can simply hose down the cushions – it’s incredibly low maintenance.” In Australia, sun protection is paramount in any setting, and if you haven’t got a fixed awning, then a cantilevered umbrella, like the Jardinico Caractere Side Pole Umbrella, is a stylish choice. “A cantilevered umbrella can tilt in different directions and be wheeled to the poolside or over your outdoor table – wherever you need shade,” says Morgan. On a relaxing weekend or a warm spring evening, life doesn’t get much better than having a drink with friends, and having the right set-up will ensure all that’s left to do is send out the invitations. ● SARAH MARINOS

FEATURE HOUSE DONCASTER \ 63 THE BOULEVARDE 5

2
The Boulevarde arguably has the best front yard in town. Ruffey Lake Park’s 80 hectares is where Christmas carollers sing, New Year’s fireworks fly and the view is forever. Planted here, the Boulevardiers scope out the advantages. Five minutes’ drive to any of six shopping centres is a sweet strategy, but even better is being able to walk to Westfield … ahem, past the queues of cars waiting for parking. There’s more – but only for the two houses in the hilltop cul-de-sac of The Boulevarde off King Street. No traffic; ample visitor parking; safe space for skating and riding. This two-level house is one of this rare pair. Built in 1990 of solid Daniel Robertson brick, it has Victorian-style good looks and a lacy balcony looking over the park. Living and dining rooms, open-plan meals and family areas, a study and a rumpus room promise adaptable space, just right for a family to grow from tots to teens and for parents to work from home. A multigeneration household is also possible; the rumpus room could be converted to a groundfloor bedroom. The house has been smartly updated with new paintwork and carpet, plus oak flooring in the rumpus room. White walls and details such as ceiling roses, fireplaces and the triple-window bay create a neoclassical backdrop to suit any style. Importantly, the floor plan suits contemporary requirements; there’s big storage, an easy flow to brick courtyards north and west and an easterly lawn overlooking the park. The double garage has internal and garden access. The carpeted living room, in the front bay, has a marbleframed fireplace and an elegant cutaway to the dining room.
