My four-year-old has recently started to tell white lies. “No, I didn’t take my sister’s dolly off her,” and “I don’t know who put rubbish on the floor – maybe it was the cat?” among others. So far, I’m pretty good at knowing when she’s telling porkies, but I do wonder if I’d be quite as astute if the lies were more elaborate. In this week’s cover story comedian and Would I Lie To You star Frank Woodley talks about the challenges of telling a rouse from the truth after filming the new season of the show. This week we also have the skinny on some of the best music, festivals and shows to get to in 2023. ●

It’s a new year and a fresh start for Melbourne’s vibrant arts scene. MYKE BARTLET T
H A R RY S T Y L E S
That’s entertainment M Ballet and opera The Australian Ballet is celebrating 60 years on the stage with a season that deftly weaves innovation with some much-loved classics. The world premiere of Don Quixote (State Theatre, March 15-25) promises a lush and colourful spectacle, while the centrepiece of the celebrations is a bold reinvention of Swan Lake (State Theatre, September 19-30). If opera is more to your tastes, Opera Australia’s acclaimed production of Phantom of the Opera (State Theatre, until February 18) almost qualifies,

although traditionalists might prefer the romance of Wagner’s Tannhauser (Hamer Hall, May 17 and 20) or Victorian Opera’s upbeat take on Rossini’s Cinderella (Melbourne Recital Centre, March 10). ● Top pick: Swan Lake
Theatre It’s also a big year for the Melbourne Theatre Company. Highlights include the legal drama Prima Facie (February 8-March 25), American sensation Is God Is (June 19-July 15), Judith Lucy in Happy Days
(May 1-June 10) and new Melbourne play Bloom (July 18-August 19). Other big shows include the overseas hits Mary Poppins at Her Majesty’s Theatre until April 30 and & Juliet – a joyful reimagining that gives Shakespeare’s heroine a second chance – from February 26 at the Regent Theatre. From February 17, the Comedy Theatre hosts The Mousetrap – Agatha Christie’s classic mystery that has kept audiences in London guessing for more than 70 years. ● Top pick: & Juliet
Festivals If there’s one thing that defines Melbourne it’s our love of festivals (OK, and footy). One weekend brings not one but three amazing fests – Moomba, Port Fairy Folk and Golden Plains (all March 10-13). We can also expect returns from big hitters the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (March 29-April 23), Melbourne Writers Festival (May 4-7) and Melbourne International Film Festival (August 3-20). ● Top pick: Don’t make us choose!

The gig scene shows Melbourne is back in business. From new acts, we have the chart-topping Harry Styles playing Marvel Stadium (February 25-26), Florence + the Machine bringing ace new record Dance Fever to Rod Laver Arena (March 8-9) and Ed Sheeran knocking the MCG for a six (March 2-3). The nostalgia boom continues with ’80s legends Icehouse (February 11), Sting (February 23) and Belinda Carlisle (November 11), and ’90s acts Backstreet Boys (February 28March 1), Counting Crows (April 4-5) and The Corrs (November 6). ● Top pick: Harry Styles

he charming Mornington Peninsula village of Flinders will come to life with colourful exhibitions, inspiring workshops and engaging performances highlighting local artists and creatives in the inaugural Flinders Fringe Festival. The new three-day event (February 17-19), has been created to showcase and support local artisans and performers and entice visitors to the area. Renowned milliner Melissa Jackson brings 30 years of creative experience to the event as its artistic director. “The festival is set to entertain, captivate and inspire with an array of immersive, interactive and educational performances and workshops – including cabaret, experimental jazz, choirs, giant puppets, First Nations workshops, sculpture, nature walks, ocean dancing and more,” she says.

personally, when I ‘dance with the ocean’ I always feel clear, connected to myself and that exquisite communion of being both grounded and expanded.” Literary Brunch with Lisa Gorton International award-winning poet and author Lisa Gorton will reveal the curious life of a poet over brunch at the Flinders Hotel. “As a child, I spent holidays and weekends on the peninsula,” she says. “I am going to write poems about the landscapes that I remember. “The landscapes of childhood are always partly dream landscapes, so these will be quite intimate poems. But they’ll be transformed by John and Bonnie Thorn – playful, prodigiously talented performers. Fringe Festival Singers Workshop A series of relaxed, inspirational and fun sessions will bring everyone’s
voices together in an inclusive setting, designed for beginners through to seasoned choir performers and led by world-renowned music leader Dr Kathleen McGuire. “We welcome every singer regardless of an individual’s prior experience,” McGuire says. “Our goal is to have fun, learn some new skills, make new friends, find a collective voice together, and share the fruits of our efforts with an audience.” Sergio Ecole The classical guitarist will be performing on guitars made by Carey Pedicini and Richard Howell, both luthiers who live on the peninsula. “My music … incorporates 30 years of my experiences in music,” Ecole says. “I draw heavily from Latin
genres like Brazilian and flamenco, but being Italian-born there is also a Mediterranean influence.” Changing Seas by Engla Changing Seas is an original music performance by chamber jazz trio Engla, with stunning drone-captured video projections of the Flinders coastline by Tasma Pittock. The trio hopes Changing Seas will invite the audience to contemplate the musical and visual kaleidoscope of the coastline presented and dramatised by the performers Michael Currie (five-string double bass), Poul Grage (percussion), Anthony Schulz (accordion), and Tasma Pittock (video). ● FLINDERS FRINGE FESTIVAL \ ● flindersfringe.com.au

To be Frank among the lies
S
potting a liar or detecting if you’ve been taken for a spin doesn’t necessarily get easier with age or life experience. Just ask comedian Frank Woodley, who thought he was able to spot a fib a mile off until filming a second season as team captain on Would I Lie To You? which starts this month on Channel 10. “Before doing this show I was confident I was good at detecting bullshit, but it turns out I am hopeless and I don’t think it’s just me,” he says. “I think it’s much harder to tell when somebody is lying and that’s what makes this show so much fun, because when you think you’re absolutely certain, you’re far from the truth. “And when it turns out the audience has guessed wrong too, there is a great delight in that as well.” Best known for being part of the Australian comedy duo Lano and Woodley alongside his longtime friend Colin Lane, Woodley might be happiest on stage with his slapstick partner, but admits that joining Would I Lie To You? host Chrissie Swan and fellow team captain and comedian Charlie Pickering
The 54-year-old married father of two teenagers who lives in Northcote got his start in comedy in Melbourne in the early ’90s. It was the era of the sword-swallowing and penisweight-lifting freaks that made up the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow – peak entertainment from the US and regular visitors to Australia – while local TV comedy sketch shows including The Big Gig and The Late Show were top-shelf picks. Lano and Woodley did their first gig at Collingwood’s Prince Patrick Hotel in 1993. They hit the heights in the mid-1990s, selling out shows for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and even winning an ARIA award in 2006. The pair never faltered in their delivery of compelling slapstick, relying on a bendy humour (literally) to get them through. Just Google their 1995 skit at the MICF gala, titled Exercise, for a squiz at their hilarious past life. “I am much more boring, shy and introverted in real life,” Woodley says. “My on-stage persona is an alter ego where I can be silly and free.”
“I am much more boring, shy and introverted in real life. My on-stage persona is an alter ego where I can be silly and free.”
FRANK WOODLEY
has given him a new perspective on how comedy plays a role in his life. “I actually worked with Chrissie Swan on The Circle about 10 years ago,” he says. “She was a good friend of Colin’s and he’s always spoken highly of her. I was impressed by her as a person and presenter. [She] is hilarious, has the mouth of a sailor and is totally unpretentious, witty and a wild person. She brings that energy to the show and she is similar on stage to who she is off it.”
He has been part of the comedy scene in Australia for more than 30 years and is the first to admit a lot has changed. “A spot for us on ABC’s The Big Gig meant people would come up to me on the street for the next week and say, hey, I loved that segment,” Woodley recalls. “Nowadays, it feels like the audience is spread so thin and they see so much stuff, that when they do see you, they give you a familiar look but can’t recall how they know you.

“I don’t want to sound like that old guy. But I do appreciate the young, creative people doing it now, and the amount of connection and inspiration and opportunity you have to have to build an audience, but comedy overall lacks that rare experience of the past. “We are in a time of information overload now and people don’t know where to turn for it.” So, what’s his take on the rise of cancel culture and its impact on comedy? “I think cancel culture is complicated and not fully understood,” Woodley says. “We did have some form of it in the pre-internet age, in that if you stepped outside of what was considered socially acceptable the audience would turn on you. “Comedians can often say things that are highly inappropriate but if they’re good comedians, the fact they’re playing with fire is all about how [they] deliver it with technical skill and understanding of their audience.” He has two teens in the house – his daughter, 15, and son, 19 – and Woodley admits that his comedy hasn’t always won them over. “My daughter has been more into it than my son; he was always a bit ambivalent about my comedy,” he says. “If you told someone your dad was in The Beatles or was the lead singer of Duran Duran that would be exciting, but there’s no cachet for my kids in their dad being in Lano and Woodley.” He says that, while he has turned to comedy for his bread and butter, at home his currency is less in the joke delivery and all about listening. “A happy family has to know how to laugh together,” Woodley says. “And sometimes when there is tension, it’s good to bring comedy in the mix to bring everybody together and have a playful attitude. “But what I’ve learned is that my kids don’t want me to entertain them – they want to be nurtured, listened to and taken seriously – and never to make jokes at their expense. “They definitely don’t take to that.” ●

hen New Zealand-born and Melbourne-based brothers Keston and Jeremy Muijs launched their skincare company Grown Alchemist in 2008, they wanted to make one thing very clear to their customers. “You can’t reverse ageing,” says Jeremy, who was adamant he didn’t want to create skincare packed with broken promises. Theirs is a holistic approach to skin health and one that ditches chemicals for botanicals fused in
cosmetology. It’s billed as clean skin with a wellness core that’s wooing fans worldwide. “Rather than using ingredients that fix the skin, it’s about renewing what’s there,” Jeremy says. “We focus on natural ingredients, and that has changed the way we look at ageing. You can’t anti-age something, but what you can do is health-restore it.” The philosophical shift in mindset plays out in their carefully curated range of products that thrive on
“We focus on natural ingredients, and that has changed the way vegan formulations. The products are made in a North Melbourne warehouse and stocked at major hotels including Nobu Hotel London, while a partnership with Delta Air Lines in the US means high flyers get optimal products on their flights. The siblings sold the majority of their business to the Hong Kongbased L’Occitane Group in 2020, but the brothers are still at the helm of formulations. A global flagship store is located in Faraday Street, Carlton, in a heritage-listed building in the King & Godfree precinct. It’s the destination for all LED-light therapy treatments, oxygen facials and IV drip therapy for a zesty pick-me-up. science for their beauty formulations and continue to challenge the status quo in the industry. “When we started the brand, we brought in a biologist who spoke about renewal in the body via circadian rhythms. “What that conversation boiled down to was that the body has a powerful repair mechanism – which is rare to stop and a good thing – but it can be slowed down and hampered,” Jeremy says. “That’s when our focus became about trying to resource and elevate that natural

process in the body through quality ingredients that assist.” As brothers growing up in NZ, they shared a love of playing sport together. They have a sister who studied theatre and now lives in Sydney. Their dad was a savvy businessman who worked in the music industry, helping major record labels like Sony and BMG distribute in markets like NZ and the UK. There’s no sibling rivalry in this family, with Jeremy the first to admit his brother’s knack for persistence has done wonders for their business. JA N E R O C CA
“Keston has always been creative and it has worked well in driving our product and design team,” Jeremy says. “I naturally try to bring things to a close and he naturally tries to go wider. “He has energy I gave up on round three of product development and he takes it to round 23! In the early stages of the brand, I resented it,” he adds. “I just wanted product to get to market. “But what it meant is that people who tried our product came back and bought it again and it’s why we are where we are in business.” ●

two-hour flight from Melbourne gets you to the Sunshine Coast, home to the best Aussie beaches, pristine hinterland and the seaside drawcard of Noosa, a snappy 30-minute drive from the airport. The resort and foodie lifestyle of Noosa has long centred on Hastings Street and main beach – a popular spot for families to enjoy a day in the sun – but it’s a 10-minute drive inland where we base ourselves for three days in a private estate that shows why more people are heading north.

Kuruvita sources beef from the Darling Downs, while professional fisherman Dave is on speed-dial to talk about his catch of the day. We enjoyed locally caught snapper during our stay. “People who visit Noosa from Melbourne come to expect a certain level of food sophistication,” Kuruvita says.

Our two-storey apartment at Lakeside Rise in Noosa Heads comes with all the modern finishing touches, including local and Danish furniture. A large balcony that overlooks Lake Weyba is the perfect place to watch epic sunsets and enjoy the coastal breezes. All rooms come with air-con, and the kitchen’s state-of-the-art electronic Miele cooking appliances make you want to whip up a meal or two. The apartment is just the place for those wanting less chaos and more unwinding time. The pool is a great second option after a day at the beach. Victorians will love the access to celebrity chef, restaurateur and SBS TV cooking show host Peter Kuruvita, who moved on from his Noosa Beach House restaurant a year ago to open ALBA by Kuruvita in this even ritzier end of town. At ALBA, Kuruvita fuses his Sri Lankan heritage with a contemporary dining vision. Indulge in the tasting menu with matched wines or try the vegetarian banquet. We couldn’t go past the black-pepper king prawns wrapped in lashings of coconut, paneer and curry leaves, Sri Lankan snapper curry and the North Queensland mango kulfi. We enjoyed oysters and French chardonnay on arrival, while the kids can eat for $15.
“While the modern Asian explosion in cuisine has happened on the Sunshine Coast, I’m all about fusing my Sri Lankan heritage with modern dishes – nobody is doing that here.” Kuruvita also hosts cooking classes, taking you on a journey from Sri Lankan to Mexican and French cooking. It’s intimate and a peek inside his culinary genius with tips on how to take the recipes from his kitchen to your own. Waking up to the sound of chatty kookaburras and cockatoos reminds us we have swapped the noise of inner-city Melbourne’s tram grid for a quintessential Queensland soundtrack. A hinterland track bike ride backs onto the property and is easy to access. This is how you spend a holiday for a total reset. If you fancy a year-round luxury resort lifestyle, you could be in luck. The Queensland RSL Art Union auction draw 403 is giving away two apartments at Lakeview Rise, Noosa Heads, with all money raised going towards helping retired veterans. The total prize value is $6.3 million – including a dining experience in the new abode for eight family and friends hosted by Kuruvita himself. ● ● rslartunion.com.au/prizes/draw403

The times, they are a changin’. What was true of Bob Dylan’s era is true of today, with the experience of the past few years causing many people to reassess their life priorities. A key consideration for many families has been rethinking how they spend time together. Long a mainstay of other countries, intergenerational living is making inroads in Australian society and, because the front of this house doubles as self-contained accommodation, it’s the ideal living situation for 9A Marshall Avenue. The family compound takes on the aura of a luxury resort at this property. For a start, there are no fewer than three kitchens (one main kitchen and two kitchenettes). Then there’s the north-south oriented tennis court, which facilitates active living. Overlooking the tennis court is an al fresco area and the flowing kitchen-meals-living and dining area. Northern sunlight ensures occupants can enjoy light and warmth. The kitchen features premium details, including a stone bench, Miele appliances, Fotile cooktop and rangehood, and cabinetry. This area flows into the sizeable rumpus room, which hosts a wet bar and is the perfect excuse to show off the house by entertaining visitors. Five bedrooms, including the main bedroom, are upstairs, and all circle a central retreat. The main bedroom is the height of luxury, hosting a walk-in wardrobe, an en suite (complete with spa bath), a kitchenette and a private sunny terrace.
