Most of us learnt a bit of Shakespeare at school. For some it was Hamlet, others maybe Macbeth, but for most, it was the bard’s star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet. But in the new musical, & Juliet, the tragic heroine says “see-ya” to Romeo and forges her own path. One of our cover stars, Lorinda May Merrypor, takes the title role. The other, theatre mainstay Casey Donovan, plays Juliet’s nurse – but not quite as you’d remember her. Instead, she belts out songs by Katy Perry, Ariana Grande and P!nk. In this week’s cover story, the women spoke to us about how exciting it is to portray these strong female roles. ●

Maria Thattil tells her story of triumph over trauma in a new book. Wo r d s JA N E R O C CA

hen model and media personality Maria Thattil became the third person of colour to represent and win Miss Universe Australia in its 70-year history in 2020, she did more than break the norms. Now, she’s rewriting the rule book, and growing her fan base. Thattil used the pageant platform to launch a media career and has just released her first book, Unbounded. It’s an autobiographical self-help guide that traverses her experiences of dealing with racism, bullying and identity politics. She shares stories of teenage selfharm, coming out in her 20s and finding peace through spirituality. You might also remember Thattil from Channel 10’s I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! on which she came out as bisexual, to much fanfare from the tabloids. Until a few weeks ago, she kept her private love life away from the media,

you want to get help,” Thattil says. “I share a personal story about my incident of self-harm at 14. I remember being that age and the toll it took on me – it was compounded by racism and bullying. “I didn’t understand as a child what was happening. I would get up and go to school and I numbed it and repressed it. “It continued until my 20s when I finally accepted what had happened and understood it. “I have a lot of my own trauma from coming out to self-sabotaging, but knowing you need to talk to someone is the start of that unravelling.” Thattil, who now describes herself as pansexual, plans to work on a project later this year with her brother Dominic – who is gay and bore the brunt of parental friction when he came out. “There was a lot of conflict in the family home when my brother came out,” she says. “But through a lot of perseverance and uncomfortable conversations, we got through and are closer than ever. “My parents had to overcome their views of the world and step into the way their children think. That isn’t easy for anyone set in their ways aged in their 50s and 60s, but they proved you could do it.” ● UNBOUNDED \ Out now through Penguin Australia.

but has since declared she’s happily in love with TikTok star Jorgee Rae. “I have always been somebody influenced by other human stories,” says Thattil, who was raised in Melbourne by Indian parents who migrated to Australia in the ’90s. “When I had hard moments in life and pulled myself out of those tough situations, it was always someone else’s story I connected with and that gave me the courage to speak up with my own.” Unbounded is her battle-scarred tell-all. From queer identity to

questioning her family’s strict Catholic faith to being the child of immigrants, she leans into all the uncomfortable parts of growing up and finding the courage to come out. Thattil hopes her new book will help those asking questions, who need a little spiritual and self-help guidance, and let them know they are not alone. “I know people will connect with my vulnerabilities,” she says. Thattil completed a bachelor’s degree in applied science and majored in psychology at RMIT. She got half-

way through her honours year before working in fashion retail for a few years. She later enrolled in a master of management at Melbourne Business School, worked in HR and then as a talent acquisition partner at the North East Link Project. All roads eventually led to a desire to enter Miss Universe Australia. She was in and out of relationships – some toxic, some pleasant – but she was constantly questioning why she didn’t feel like she fitted in. “I think it’s important to let people know it’s okay to struggle and admit

COVER STORY The stars of & Juliet bring female role models to the stage in a retelling of the famous love story.

T

here’s a good chance you’d never seen a collaboration between Shakespeare and the writer behind Schitt’s Creek coming. But then, you’re unlikely to have conceived of the updated take on Romeo and Juliet by David West Read (the awardwinning writer of Schitt’s Creek), in which the bard’s tragic romance is reconfigured with a happier ending for the female lead. That’s the premise behind the new musical & Juliet, where the heroine realises Romeo isn’t all that and runs off to Paris. In it, does Juliet belt out Britney Spears’ Oops … I Did It Again? Tick. Are there songs sung by the Backstreet Boys, Katy Perry and P!nk? Yep. All in all, there are 30 songs by hitmaker Max Martin (and friends), making the musical one in which you’re likely to know most of the words. Lorinda May Merrypor, who plays the titular part of Juliet, feels that her character is an improvement on some of the female leads in musicals past, such as Sandy – played by Olivia Newton-John – in the movie Grease. “When you think about it, Sandy had to change everything about herself to be with Danny,” she says. “I think it’s such a better role model that we’re coming up with now. “To have these women who take back the reins, who are like, ‘I am who I am, and that’s just me. If you don’t like it, we’re not going to work it out.’ And that’s what Juliet does. She’s like, ‘I need to live my own life. And if you fit into that, then that’s great. But I don’t need a man to fulfil me’.” Merrypor doesn’t simply talk about empowerment; she lives it. Consider how she won this sought-after role, for instance, in a play that has already won raves on the West End and Broadway. Having been a performer since she was “tiny”, Merrypor says she knew she had done the work to deserve the role, and it was time to go after it. But how to actually win it? Positive visualisation didn’t hurt. “I had this weird thing that every time I was in the bathroom, I would write ‘Juliet’ in the

mist on the shower screen while I was auditioning. I thought, I really want this, and I’m going to do anything in my power to make this happen. Working my butt off, learning all the material, but also thinking about it constantly. I watched every YouTube video that existed about & Juliet. There’s a lot of work that goes into it, but you have to believe that it’s possible as well.” Not that she was always surrounded by those who saw her full potential. “I grew up in Rockhampton, which is not a big city, and my dreams when I was younger seemed like maybe a bit of a fantasy to some people. There were definitely [those] who said, ‘You should have a back up!’ ” Through COVID-19 she started to think they were right. “There were a lot of jobs out there that I wasn’t getting and I didn’t understand what it

But playing Angelique was another drawcard for Donovan: “It’s a confident [part] – she’s a strong woman who wants to take the best care of Juliet and make sure she’s on the straight and narrow, but she also has her own heartbreak and her own love.” For Merrypor, the fact that there is diversity – “racial diversity, body diversity, gender nonconformity” – was another reason to love the show, especially as it provides role models. She lists her own encounters with public figures Brooke Blurton and Maria Thattil as pinch-me moments, saying, “They’re people I have looked up to in the media for a number of years – and little brown girls as well.” She says “little brown girls” with nuance. Someone once told her: “There will always be work for you, because you’re brown.” “It was like that was the reason I would get work, not because of my talents or ... hard

was. But I came to the point where I thought, something has to give, and I took a few months to 100 per cent focus on myself ... I started feeling a lot happier – working out and eating better, all those kinds of self-love things – and I think it turned into something great.” Rob Mills stars as playwright William Shakespeare in the show, and Casey Donovan stars as Juliet’s nurse, Angelique. Donovan was immediately wowed by the show’s premise and the fact that it made for a diverse theatrical offering. “It’s just absolutely amazing to see [how things have progressed in musical theatre]. It’s great to have such a broad spectrum of representation.” For example, Juliet’s pal in the show is a non-binary person.

work,” she says. “Not because I’m any good, just because they need a person of colour.” Of course, that’s an absurd notion, and Merrypor joins a cast that is supremely talented. But even someone as seasoned as Donovan knows that finding one’s confidence is a step-by-step process. For her part, she makes a concerted effort to relax and talks to the cast to see how everyone is coping. “What I love about the musical theatre community is that there are a lot of shoulders to lean on,” she says. The end result is magic: “Each night is different. Someone new is watching the show every night, so you want it to be new and exciting for them each time.” ● & JULIET \ Regent Theatre from February 26

French wineries are being wooed by Australia’s beautiful bubbly.

T

he Australian premium sparkling bubble has burst onto the world stage, and it’s got the French in a fine fizz, thanks to coolclimate grape growers giving champagne makers a reason to see what all the fuss is about. Australian winemaker and sparkling wine specialist Trina Smith, who usually spends her time in the Barossa, has collaborated with GH Mumm’s chef de cave Laurent Fresnet (a native of Champagne in France), to release Mumm Tasmania. It’s a world first for the reputed brand – with the

French heading south to chime in on the success of the region. “It’s been a conversation long in the making to get to this point with GH Mumm,” says Smith of the collaboration that began three years ago. “Sparkling always takes a while to eventuate – you have to find the fruit, know your growers and know your blocks, hold it in tirage for two to three years,” she says. “Australian sparkling works due to its climate up north [of Tasmania] in the Pipers River and Tamar

WINE

Valley regions. The slightly cooler temperature and higher humidity helps keep temperature down, but also lets [it have] that long ripening period for acid retention.” Mumm Tasmania uses the French methode traditionnelle for its local sparkling. This allows the wines to fully develop their flavours and capture aromas of warm spices and red berries balanced with delicate acidity. Pirie is one of Tasmania’s leading premium sparkling makers, and senior winemaker Tom Wallace has perfected the art with a “late disgorged” drop valued at $145. It’s worth every penny – with grapes selected from parcels of chardonnay and pinot noir from the Tamar Valley. It takes 10 years to make, spending most of the decade on lees – the dead yeast cells left over from fermentation, which add complexity to the wine. “The main similarity between Tasmania and France is the coolness of the climate, but in Tasmania, we’re more consistent because we’re surrounded by the ocean,” Wallace says. “In France, Champagne is inland and the climate has become risky in the past few years – acquiring vintages have become increasingly difficult. “The French winemakers are very keen to see what we do in Tasmania and there’s a great respect for it.” Tasmania’s House of Arras was named No.1 sparkling in the Decanter Magazine Top 100 wines of 2020 for its EJ Carr Late Disgorged 2004, which retails for $265 a bottle. The rise in its popularity globally has seen local consumers want a piece of the action, too. Sandy Mayo, chief marketing officer at Accolade Wines, says it’s the award-winning Arras that is giving consumers an alternative to champagne. “Arras has opened the eyes of the world by putting Australian sparkling on the world stage,” Mayo says. “What sets Arras apart from the rest is how much time it spends on lees – in some cases up to 14 years on tirage. The flavour is testament to the fruit and place it comes from, and it’s aged longer than champagne.” Mitchelton chief winemaker Natalie Cleghorn says Victoria is also delivering on its sparkling. “We’re seeing beautiful sparkling from the Yarra Valley, but there are other regions that historically have not been as well known for sparkling – such as Strathbogie, Western Australia and cool-climate regions like Orange – that are ones to watch.” ●
