There aren’t usually many good reasons to buy new clothes, but each year, Aussie retailer Witchery gives us a very worthwhile one. The White Shirt Campaign, now in its 15th year, raises money for vital research into ovarian cancer – a cause close to the heart of our cover star, former MP Julie Bishop. We spoke to Bishop about her two older sisters’ experiences with ovarian cysts and her passion for the cause. Other White Shirt ambassadors Ajak Deng, Stephanie Miller and Laura Henshaw also spoke to us – each citing unique reasons for their support for the lifesaving campaign. ●

Corner views of Parliament House and Bourke Street and a snapshot of the Dandenong Ranges on a clear day add to the ambience.
The room also has a prime view of Le Splash – where guests can enjoy the heated outdoor pool regardless of Melbourne’s weather.
Dolly restaurant – named after an Alfred Hitchcock zoom style – dishes up a noir-inspired beef wellington that’s memorable. Staff are eager to please and friendly.
THE MOTLEY HOTEL \ Richmond
The first thing you notice at this new eight-storey hotel is the art.
The Motley Hotel is a serenade to its rag-trader past, and the restaurant Ms Parker is named after the seamstress and costumier Mary, who once lived there.
Located on Bridge Road, this luxury hotel is a mix of QT meets Art Series energy. A flamboyant juxtaposition of textures features in all the rooms, with heritage-themed rooms soon to come.
The emphasis is on “live like a local” and some rooms have their own courtyard on the ground level.
The attention to detail in the lavishly styled rooms will appeal to interior design enthusiasts, art lovers and those who opt for individuality at every turn.

The boom era of Melbourne hotels is upon us. We explore the newest arrivals.
LE MERIDIEN \ City
The long-awaited return of this Parisian hotel brand sees it settle in nicely on Bourke Street.
It’s an elegant five-star winner that retains its 1912 art deco exterior and pays homage to its theatre and live music past. The 235 luxurious modern rooms are packed with the finer things of a top-notch stay.
The fusion of heritage accents and mid-century furniture is stunning.
The well-appointed bathrooms with splashes of marble and large vanity basins urge you to spread out your beauty products. Oh, and did we mention the Dyson appliances?
The hotel truly strikes a chord with the inclusion of a turntable and Marshall speakers in The Palace Suite (records are included) – a nod to those who performed at the hotel in its halcyon days, including Deep Purple, UB40 and Moby.
The suite allows for a connecting room with two king-sized bedrooms with TVs, divided by a spacious lounge and dining area.
LANEWAYS BY OVOLO \ City
Memphis-inspired boutique rooms dominate this hotel located in Little Bourke Street.
Though it’s conveniently on the fringe of Chinatown and near iconic Melbourne haunts, including Pellegrini’s, make sure you don’t overlook Amphlett House – the bistro-pub within.
Inside the hotel, you’ll find chic decor and compact rooms with all the perks. The Memphis Terrace has a balcony, and the Memphis Penthouse comes with an outdoor spa, two bathrooms, dining, lounge, microwave and dishwasher.
The suite with laneway and city views is curated by designer Neale Whitaker, who worked alongside Australian interior design office Luchetti Krelle to riff on the lane’s cobblestones and arty ambition.
RITZ-CARLTON \ City
If an 80-storey skyscraper hotel is your idea of high-flying happiness, then consider the newly opened Ritz-Carlton Melbourne.
The Age once called the Lonsdale Street site home, but the newly relaunched building now comes with a sky-lobby reception for an extravagant point of difference.
Atria restaurant continues to get its dizzy share of hashtag glory on socials. It serves Victorian produce and an amazing view no matter where you sit, and boasts a cocktail bar that makes you feel you could be anywhere fancy in the world.
Melbourne’s west-end district is about glitz and glamour, with more glass, steel and bluestone than one could poke a stick at. ●

Barron showed her first collection at Melbourne Fashion Week in 1997 with supermodel Linda Evangelista wearing her looks.

Place MY CUTTING TABLE
My cutting table sits behind vast glass walls at our store at 1139 High Street, Armadale. I can see the activity and buzz on the street from here. I have conversations with my sample machinists and discuss the next fabric selection with the team. It is the epitome of a coworking space. You can’t get more sustainable than walking a garment from one side of the wall to the other. This is a very happy place.
Event
LANGHAM LOVES LISA
The first Langham Loves Lisa fashion show held in The Langham
Melbourne’s beautiful Aria Bar following a two-year pandemic hiatus is a favourite event. The elegant space was filled with stylish women, all so happy to once again be in each other’s company. The Langham generously served French champagne, caviar and hors d’oeuvres. It was such a joy to be in the Melbourne CBD amidst so much love and laughter. Hence the tradition has continued.
Bar

Very conveniently located opposite my store, this wine bar is run by Clinton McIver – the owner and chef who has taken a few concepts from

Restaurant
DA NOI, 95 TOORAK ROAD, SOUTH YARRA
This cosy, tiny restaurant is a Melbourne institution. Chef Pietro Porcu plays creatively in his kitchen with ingredients. The customers are rewarded with an ever-changing, interesting and authentic Sardinian menu. The hand-made pasta dishes are amazing and the eight-course “bring whatever Pietro thinks” menu is pretty special. Little has changed
inside for nearly three decades including its luxurious fireplace. Da Noi has been a favourite for nearly three decades.

I love small businesses and, wherever I can, it is where I will shop. The experiential interaction with the owner or small team of passionate and informed staff far outweighs that of big chains. MY MELBOURNE
HIGGINS
SHANNYN
More than 27 Australian women across fashion, art, politics, health and prominent influencers will be raising ovarian cancer awareness this month.
Australian retailer Witchery launched the White Shirt campaign 15 years ago and continues to partner with the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF), donating 100 per cent of the gross proceeds of every OCRF white shirt sold to the foundation – with the goal of funding an early detection test for ovarian cancer.
This year’s fashionable white shirt has been designed by P.E Nation’s Pip Edwards.
The Witchery White Shirt campaign is a prompt to get women asking important questions when it comes to their reproductive health.
In 2022, around 1815 Australian women were estimated to have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer (the equivalent of five per day). Only 49 per cent (889) will still be alive in five years’ time.
One of this year’s ambassadors, former foreign affairs minister Julie Bishop first took part in the campaign in 2019 and knows the anxiety that comes with not knowing whether one’s symptoms point to ovarian cancer or not.
“This campaign hit close to home because my two older sisters were diagnosed with ovarian cysts in
These shirts save lives
their younger years,” she says. “We didn’t know if they were malignant or not. Fortunately, in the case of both of them, it proved to be benign. So, when I was asked to be an ambassador I readily agreed because I had first-hand experience of what that trauma and anxiety was like for our family.
“This cancer doesn’t respect age, wealth or status and it can strike any woman at any time.”
It’s also something South-Sudanese-born and Melbourne-raised model Ajak Deng wants people –particularly young women of colour – to know.
“I want to raise awareness in my community and let young women know there is nothing to be ashamed about getting a yearly check-up to know where you’re at,” Deng says.
“Some women in my community don’t take their reproductive health very seriously. I have seen this disease happen to friends in the States and the UK. Too often ... women say to me, ‘I’m black, I don’t get cancer. I am, like, ‘No girl, get checked up.’”
Deng made a name for herself walking international runways for Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier and Louis Vuitton. Until recently, she was based in New York and returned to Australia as the pandemic took hold. She is living in Brisbane and studying nursing and hopes to work in the disability sector. Her family are still based in Melbourne.
She is still modelling, and is currently the face of Mecca Beauty and Witchery, and recently worked with Country Road and Scanlan & Theodore.
She says she wanted to be involved in the White Shirt campaign to use her influence to help others.
“I already have a voice through my fashion work, and now I am putting it to good use.”
For Bishop, wearing a white shirt designed by her good friend Pip Edwards is another win.
“Pip is so talented and the shirt is a great piece to add to any wardrobe. She’ll bring a lot of awareness to the cause through her brand and followers too,” she says.
The former MP says she is proud to be an advocate for the Australian fashion industry, and was its champion while she was in government, even when her support drew criticism.
“I believe we have world class designers and manufacturers in this country, and as an export item, fashion didn’t receive the support it deserved,” Bishop says. “It’s a multi-billion-dollar industry employing hundreds of thousands of people. I could never understand why my support of the fashion industry drew criticism, because it was a significant part of the economy.”
Bishop is also the latest ambassador to join David Jones, which is hoping to attract women over 60.

COVER STORY
The White Shirt campaign leads the fight against ovarian cancer.
“Since leaving politics I have been able to pursue roles in fashion and I am loving it,” Bishop says. “David Jones has recognised there is an age demographic that is overlooked in fashion and they’ve asked me to help break the stereotype.”
Other White Shirt ambassadors include Melbourne millennial duo Laura Henshaw and Stephanie Miller of Keep It Cleaner fame.
The best friends have more than 321,000 followers on Instagram, promoting movement, mindfulness and healthy eating through their app, but as ambassadors for this campaign, they hope to encourage their audience to always investigate reproductive health symptoms.
“I have been very lucky to not have any family members or close friends affected by ovarian cancer, but in working with the OCRF I have got to know many of the people who have been affected, and I have followed their journey,” Henshaw says.
Miller says that Leane Flynn “is one individual we have had the pleasure of getting to know through OCRF, along with her daughters, and I’m inspired by her resilience and passion to educate people.”
Flynn was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in April 2017. The 51-year-old mother of three received healthy pap smear results but was experiencing bloating and the need to urinate frequently –symptoms attributed to menopause.
A tumour was later detected and her cancer was treated but has since returned. She is now educating other women about ovarian cancer and advocating for those going through the battle – as she continues to do with such bravery and gusto.
Miller says it’s the fact that women can have the disease for so long before being diagnosed that worries her. It really can be a silent killer.
“It’s scary how long ovarian cancer can go undiagnosed – and after getting to know different individuals through supporting the campaign, it’s heartbreaking to hear how much it impacts them and their families,” she says.
This aspect of the disease also hits home for Bishop, and she hopes the campaign will prompt women to get a check-up even for the most seemingly mild symptoms.
“I also believe we do need to do more to promote the awareness among women, because symptoms are often benign and by the time a woman is diagnosed with ovarian cancer, she is often in the late stages,” she says. ●

Novella is brimming with a curated best-selling hitlist of Italian-made classics, from perfumes and colognes to soap, skincare and its iconic potpourri.
It uses the highest-quality raw materials – the garden the monks and friars used for their remedies, the Garden of Santa Maria Novella, is where many of its botanicals are still sourced.
Catherine Medici left Florence in 1533 to marry the future king of France, and required a perfumer as part of her entourage. Renato Bianco, who became known as Rene le Florentine, helped spread perfumery around the world.
Acqua della Regina (the queen’s water) is the oldest fragrance in the brand’s stable – a homage to the gift of love that Catherine took to France.

FEATURE HOUSE
CAMBERWELL \ 162 THROUGH ROAD
Way back in the 1920s, when cows roamed the streets of Camberwell and milk was delivered directly to your doorstep, Weafgreen was a homestead attached to the local dairy.
Over a century later, this renovated and extended c1920 Californian bungalow has come onto the market and offers a rare opportunity to buy into Camberwell’s history without compromising on contemporary livability.
This property is cleverly designed to maximise its leafy green environs, which are never far from sight inside the house thanks to the copious amounts of glass, particularly in the open family and living space at the back of the property. This room effortlessly blends into a huge al fresco area, which has overhead heating and fans, a television and a rain sensor roof that keeps everything protected.
This zone overlooks the property’s second outdoor area, which is a paved barbecue terrace and private garden. There’s a garden shed and even a cubby house to provide hours of entertainment for the kids.
Back inside, the Caesarstone kitchen in the free-flowing rear family zone has an induction cooktop, Smeg stainless steel oven, and Asko integrated dishwasher. The kitchen is adjacent to a laundry and storeroom. A separate formal living room hosts a fireplace.
The main bedroom overlooks the front porch and has a built-in wardrobe, a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite. It’s opposite another slightly bigger front bedroom, and there’s another bedroom, with a built-in desk, behind the downstairs central bathroom.
The study upstairs is ideal for working from home or for the kids’ homework; there’s a children’s play area up here and another bedroom with private access to a powder room. Video intercoms and security cameras offer peace of mind, there’s enough space for off-street parking for four cars, and rainwater tanks continue the house’s theme of being embedded in its location.
More on that location: Through Road is close to Middle Camberwell shops, Camberwell Junction and Surrey Hills Village. Covetable independent and public schools are nearby, there’s easy public transport access, and Wattle Park and South Surrey Park offer plenty of local greenery. ●
