Hi, my name is Gerda Gelse. I have just enclosed eight days ago but I’m already a grown-up. Other than you humans we just get 3 to 8 weeks old. Shall I describe myself? I have two transparent, fine wings, beautiful, hairy antennae and a long pointy nose. Furthermore I have a slim hairy body and six very long legs. I weight two milligram, that’s like four of your hairs. You know my song pretty well. I love it to sing it for you when you go to bed and when you have turned off the light. Then you are waving nicely to me, until I have found a nice place where I can sting you. And as soon as you have been falling asleep ...

Extract: They are always asking how it is like to live in an orphanage. Then Eilis answers: “The fact is, that we don’t have parents, but we nevertheless have a family here.” Then Sirup says: “The food is okay, isn’t it?” Then Gaya says if she says something at all: “An orphanage is an orphanage.” An orphanage is an orphanage and if you have lived your whole life in an orphanage you don’t have any idea how it could be different. It just would be nice to have a room of my own, just for me. Or at least something, that just belongs to me. The house belongs to everyone, the garden belongs to everyone, we eat, pray and breathe together. Nun Miki rules the kitchen and nun Rosa checks our wardrobes. In between there is no space for anger and no time for strolling. [...]

Content When her parents suddenly separate, the 8-year-old girl Karo – inspired by her First Communion – tries to get in touch with the Dear God. She wants to inform him explicitly about her desires. But her prayers take an unexpected way and become the beginning of an exceptional, endearinggruff and adventuresome-funny friendship. Karo was sitting on her bed and looked at the picture. An open shoe box stood in front of her. She had taken all family memories off the pin board in her old kid’s room and had stuffed them into this box. Just the gingerbread heart with the pink “I love you” written on it she had left there. Whenever her Dad entered her old room he should be hit by this lonely heart. Karo was peeved. At her parents. But also at someone else, from whom she had expected more. Or rather: From whom one had promised her more – from the Dear God. She snatched her walkietalkie to give him pertinently a piece of her mind. “You couldn’t care less of me, could you? You are so mean! Over and out!” ... “A light, wise story about the breakup of families. And a pleading to have a positive view of the world anyway.” (Kurier, Austria) “Religious topics are seldom discussed in such an easy, relaxing, humorous and at the same time profound way.” (borromedien, Germany) The author Danielle Proskar was born 1964 in Vienna. She studied direction and camera. The family movie “Karo und der liebe Gott”, to which she also wrote the screenplay, was her very successful debut as director of a movie. The movie received a lot of international prizes (e.g. Prix Camério, Prix CIFEJ) and was shown at diverse festivals.

The illustrator Judith Saupper was born 1975 in Feldkirch (Vorarlberg). She studied stage and set design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Her artworks were already exhibited at different places in Austria. She is an independent set designer for commercials, television films and movies.

Content Lin, born as the eleventh out of the scarlet runner, is a little garden witch. In her world of magical plants there are a lot of challenges: How is a magical bed to create? Why does she need hornets for her magical book? And what does this strange dream in the first night mean? Is she really a witch or not? Fortunately she has Mirko, Verdi and Aunt Amelie from the other end of the world …

Awards: >> Viennese Children’s Book Award - Collection 2012 >> Voices of Readers – Collection 2013

“But it just has to be around here!“ Lin wipes her face with her arm, angrily. A big branch has slapped her nose, with leaves being dripping-wet from the mist. Lin struggles through the jungle of thick leaves and wafts of mist. Her magic gown, a cape made of magic weeds is hanging around her shoulders, sloppy and soaked. Her hair is soaking as well and sticks to her ears. Really, there are things which Lin prefers. […]” “I have to see more!“, thinks Lin. By a resolute show of her hand, she tells the mist: Go away. Unwillingly, the damp wafts clear away. Now, behind the thicket of elder leaves, bramble twines, cherry twiggs and evening primrose blossoms, a house becomes visible. House and garden seem to be the perfect location for Lin, as there is no witchcraft without medical plants, this is for sure. But is this miraculous place really free? Might it belong to the earth spirit Mirko, or possibly even to the Waldur the wood gnome? Author Self-employed illustrator Renate Habinger was born in 1957 and studied Graphic design and illustration in Vienna. Habinger was rewarded several prizes for her graphic works, especially for her artistic work in the genre of children’s and youth literature.
