“Regular checkups and preventative health care are far better and cheaper for Canadians than ignoring health problems until a trip to the hospital is required, but far too many families do not have access to a family doctor. It’s time the government addressed this issue.”
“In 1989 the House made an all party commitment to try to eliminate child poverty by the year 2000. We did not meet that goal. It is very important that we recommit ourselves to that process...”
“Due process in law cannot be supported by offending due process in law. Civil rights cannot be protected by violating civil rights. Too many seniors in Vancouver Kingsway are forced to choose between paying for medication and paying rent. That’s why I am working in Parliament to improve pensions for every senior in Canada. The New Democrats have a plan for retirement security: Increase the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) to lift every Canadian senior out of poverty Double Canada Pension Plan benefits in our public pension system - for the same cost to Canadians as existing

I believe that a quality education system is essential to create a strong economy and a fair society. But a lack of funding from both federal and provincial governments is threatening our local schools.

That’s why I tabled a motion in Parliament proposing a National Education Strategy. I believe that every Canadian child is entitled to a high-quality education in our public system – and I will be working in Ottawa to make this happen.
