A Note from our Artistic Director MICHAEL BARKER-CAVEN

The song would have us think it’s summertime and the living is easy! I don’t know about you, but I’ve yet to notice! Still, hope springs eternal and as the days lengthen, we at the Everyman have much to look forward to; a new season of wonderful drama, music and fun for all the family. Great actors are the heartbeat of our theatre and as a nation we produce way above our quota. I am excited to say we have the cream of Irish talent treading our boards in the coming months; Stephen Brennan, Derbhle Crotty, Peter Gowen, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, Bryan Murray, Anita Reeves, the list goes on; a roll call of unmissable artists who will light up our stage, reminding us that nothing beats the thrill of sharing a story when told with such artistry. And what stories we have for you! The world premiere of ‘Best Man’, a wickedly daring take on modern marriage by Cork writer Carmel Winters; the joyful humour of Deirdre Kinahan’s ‘These Halcyon Days’; the gritty, visceral daring of Mark O’Rowe’s ‘Howie the Rookie’, to name but a few. Great new Irish writing to gild our new season!

We are thrilled to continue our burgeoning relationship with Cork Operatic Society, who following on from last summer’s Pagliacci, will present the sublime beauty of Gluck’s ‘Orpheus’. And we and the Lyric Theatre, Belfast, have teamed up to bring you the world premiere of a new musical version of ‘Pride & Prejudice’; frocks, frolics and loads of jolly cheer! We are also launching great new initiatives for family and youth drama. With local company Chameleon we are developing the Everyman Toy Theatre, a child sized interactive show that mums and dads can share with their little ones. Why sit in under the shadow of an overcast June Saturday when laughter and wonder are in the air at the Everyman? And for those who are of an age to want to get up and do it themselves, we are hosting NAYD’s production of the National Youth Theatre, fresh from its transfer from the Abbey. So you see your theatre remains a hotbed of creative intent; all we ask is that as often as you can, buy a ticket or two and come share in the joy that is the unique Everyman experience. Despite years of tireless service to the company he discovers he has become surplus to requirement, and as his employers loosen their ties so Willy is propelled towards a destructive cocktail of blind fantasy and failing dreams. Can his family save him or will Willy give way and take the final plunge?

As part of 2013’s ‘The Gathering’, Irish American TV and film actor Patrick Cronin returns to Cork to star on stage for the first time in his homeland alongside an outstanding cast of established and emerging Irish theatre artists. THE FACTORY GIRLS BY FRANK MCGUINNESS

Frank McGuinness first came to prominence with The Factory Girls when it was initially produced at The Abbey Theatre, Dublin. Since then it has become a much-loved staple of Irish theatre. The Factory Girls tells the story of five women facing the threat of redundancy, who stage a lock-in in a shirt factory in Co. Donegal when faced with losing their jobs. These are strong and independent women, Ellen, Una, Vera, Rosemary and Rebecca, who take on the boss and the union. Described as a truly realistic play filled with humour, charm, fine acting and staging; these “girls” may never get their jobs back, but their brief adventure has brought each of them the insight that will give them the courage to soldier on.

WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY AIDAN DOOLEY

Inspired by an exhibition at London’s National Maritime Museum, the heroic story of Antarctic explorer Tom Crean is brought to life in this remarkable and uplifting show. Aidan Dooley returns to the Everyman to tell the tale of Kerryman Tom Crean who survived three of the most famous polar expeditions. Scott and Shackleton through the eyes of a man who served both, and outlived both. Tom Crean, the intrepid Antarctic Explorer and one of Ireland’s unsung heroes, is skillfully brought to life in this dramatic and humorous solo performance written and performed by Aidan Dooley.

BEST MAN

BY CARMEL WINTERS This bold new play from award-winning playwright Carmel Winters deals with the near-taboo topics of sex, power and parentage within modern relationships. Set in the intoxicating height of the boom and, finally, the sober fall of the bust, Best Man prompts a public reckoning of our most private struggles as questions of power within the family are examined with scorching insight. Following the nationwide success of the high profile B for Baby tour by the Abbey, we are delighted to present the world premiere of a new play from one of Cork’s most exciting writers. Best Man, starring leading Irish actors Derbhle Crotty, Peter Gowen and Bryan Murray, is sure to become one of the most publicly debated and triumphant plays of the year. Directed by Michael Barker-Caven Set & Costume Design by Liam Doona Lighting Design by Sinéad McKenna Best Man is supported by an Arts Council Theatre Project Award. This play was originally commissioned by Abbey Theatre Amharclann na Mainistreach.

THE LYRIC THEATRE, BELFAST AND THE EVERYMAN PRESENT

PRIDE & PREJUDICE - THE MUSICAL BY JANE AUSTEN

In A New Musical Adaptation by Richard Croxford and Mark Dougherty To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, the Lyric Theatre, Belfast and The Everyman present a sparkling new musical adaptation of this dearly loved novel. The Bennets have been blessed with five daughters and it is Mrs Bennet’s mission to see them all married to eminently suitable suitors. After all, “it is a truth universally acknowledged that a single gentleman in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife”. As luck would have it a wealthy young gentleman has just taken up residence in the neighbourhood...

Whilst remaining faithful to the novel, Mark Dougherty’s musical score and Robin Peoples’ gorgeous and elegant set and costumes will create a delightful new setting within which the romance between Elizabeth Bennet and the proud but dashing Mr Darcy can blossom – one of the most popular and enduring love stories of classic fiction. Directed by Richard Croxford Set & Costume Design by Robin Peoples

In this deliciously fun and frothy romantic comedy, Jane Austen shows the folly of judging by first impressions and pokes gentle fun at the affectations and etiquette of provincial middle-class life.

THE LIVE LAST WALTZ Following a sell-out performance in March, this spectacular live re-enactment of the music from Martin Scorsese’s documentary returns to the Everyman. ‘The Last Waltz’ with ten piece band, full brass section, and all the special guests. It started as a concert, it became a celebration, and then one of the best loved music films of all time! Now Dublin rock’n’roll troupe The Group have brought their own spin to The Band’s magical farewell concert, by creating the ultimate tribute to this sensational show! This fantastic re-enactment of Martin Scorsese’s award-winning documentary The Last Waltz has already seen Band fans young and old pouring into The Everyman to relive the buzz, excitement and stunning showmanship of the original concert.

This brilliant tribute night not only stars The Group themselves as The Band (naturally!), but also features a whole host of special musical guest-stars from the Dublin music scene! The night is a real treat for fans of The Band, Dylan, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Neil Diamond, Eric Clapton, etc and anyone else who loves goodold fashioned rock and country music.

This involves responsibility for all online, phone and door ticket sales, reporting on sales figures, daily financial reconciliation, staff rosters and training, maintaining the computer and phone systems but most importantly ensuring that all customers receive the full assistance they require when booking. FAVOURITE THING ABOUT WORKING AT THE EVERYMAN It’s great to work in such a creative environment where every week we are treated to some brilliant entertainment from some amazing, talented companies and individuals. FAVOURITE SHOW Tom Crean – Antarctic Explorer and the award winning Druid Murphy performances in 2012 are my theatre highlights so far.
