A Note from our Artistic Director MICHAEL BARKER-CAVEN

It’s been such a busy past few months for us all here at the Everyman that we’ve hardly been able to draw breath before this exciting new season is upon us. So much for summer holidays! Looking back for a moment, I must raise a glass of high praise to the home team for their extraordinary efforts of the year to date. And what a year indeed! Your theatre has produced some remarkable landmarks in its time but rarely so many in one season; the bold reimagining of Death of a Salesman with Kolectiv/UCC; the honed classical nuances of Richard II in collaboration with Ouroboros and the Abbey; the daring and contentious Best Man by Carmel Winters which followed up its Midsummer premiere at the Everyman with a great run at Dublin’s Project Arts Centre; and of course the joyous strains of Pride & Prejudice the Musical, in partnership with the Lyric Theatre, Belfast. When you add to that a summer Toy Theatre with Chameleon, Peter Gowen’s Oggle, (the first production of our Cork County Touring Initiative), as well as all the wonderful shows we have brought in from far and wide, you can see why your theatre is regarded as one of the most exciting in the land! Looking ahead, the theme of partnership, which has brought us so much acclaim, continues with our first offering of the new season. We are

thrilled to renew our association with Cork Operatic Society and their bold take on the Orpheus myth. Book early because I’m sure tickets will be in hot demand following on from the joys of Pagliacci! I am delighted to welcome John O’Brien and team back into the building. May they make her sing out once more! I am also delighted to welcome Cork’s own one man sensation Pat Kinevane back to the Everyman along with a week’s exciting residency by Fishamble, The New Play Company. Other standout highlights include plenty of classic drama in the form of Pinter’s Betrayal, Eugene O’Brien’s modern classic Eden, Red Kettle’s acclaimed premiere of Beyond the Brooklyn Sky, our next Cork Short, Life Behind the Venue and of course our all new panto, Jack & the Beanstalk (with a little help from Mother Goose!) along with much, much more. So sit back, relax and enjoy the autumn and remember, buying a ticket or two in support of the Everyman means the world to us and gives us the wherewithal to bring you such remarkable fare. So do tuck in! And enjoy!

Michael Barker-Caven

Eden By Eugene O’Brien From the author of RTE’s acclaimed drama series, Pure Mule, Eugene O’Brien’s debut play is a powerful story of an ordinary relationship on an extraordinary weekend. At the heart of his world is a moving, funny and tragic portrait of the failing marriage of Billy and Breda and the weekend that will make or break them. Breda’s not lookin’ at all bad, she has certainly lost the weight, there’s no denying that. But Ernie and Evonne’s daughter Imelda is such a beautiful ride of a thing. And Tony thinks he’s James Galway – the man with the ‘golden flute’ – now Billy wants to show them all that he’s James Galway. This night it’ll all change. This night is the big night. DRAMA London Classic Theatre presents

Betrayal By Harold Pinter Emma is married to Robert, a publisher. But for seven years, she has been having an affair with Jerry, a literary agent and Robert’s best friend. Betrayal begins after the end of the affair, and pursues an intricate, gripping journey back to its very beginning. In a brilliant device, time is turned upside down as the play charts significant events in reverse. A ruthless exploration of the complexity of the human heart, Betrayal is Pinter’s most accessible work, enthralling and provocatively layered. Playwright, director, actor, poet and political activist, Harold Pinter was born on 10 October 1930 in East London. He wrote twenty-nine plays including The Birthday Party, Old Times, The Homecoming and The Caretaker. In 2005, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He died on Christmas Eve 2008.

Everyman Theatre Company and The Everyman present

An Ideal Husband

By Oscar Wilde

An Ideal Husband is regarded by many as one of Oscar Wilde’s most outstanding works. It is a play with tremendous audience appeal, combining an abundance of Wilde’s delicious witticisms with an intriguing story of blackmail and political corruption - and of course Wilde’s usual satirical observations on the upper class society of the time. With opulent costuming and setting, this production by the same team that presented Wilde’s “Lady Windermere’s Fan” should not be missed.

We do a Health and Safety inspection before every performance and liaise with the technical and stage management crew about any special requirements and timings. We can then concentrate on making our patrons welcome. We endeavour to have all shows begin on time and, with the assistance of the voluntary front of the house staff, get everybody seated so this can happen.

Favourite thing about working at the Everyman….

The fact that many of our patrons are regular visitors means we get to know them and they get to know us; this helps to make their visit more personal when they have people they can identify and communicate with. The support we receive from our colleagues in the Everyman makes our jobs easier as teamwork is essential to achieving success.

Best moments….

This theatre presents programmes to appeal to as many people as possible, embracing all the arts: Drama, Comedy, Opera, Music and Dance. All the leading Irish companies such as Druid, Abbey, Lyric, Second Age, Landmark, etc. as well as leading UK companies continue to value the importance of this theatre and look forward to returning with new productions. Local companies continue to mount quality productions like the award winning Pagliacci co-presented with Cork Operatic Society, which played to capacity houses last year, always a best moment for us. Traditional values are vital in theatre, and respect for artistes and patrons are paramount in our approach to the positions we hold. It is a pleasure to work in this architectural gem and know we are playing a part in its preservation and future.
