A note from our Executive and Artistic Directors EIMEAR O’HERLIHY & MICHAEL BARKER-CAVEN Happy New Year to you and here’s looking forward to a 2014 to remember! We’re certainly getting the year off to a bang with this jam packed season brochure which takes us right up to the summer with a wealth of wonderful shows in store and a host of star attractions. It’s all here for you – new plays by standout contemporary Irish playwrights, classic drama in exciting new productions, not to mention music and concerts to thrill and delight, side splitting stand up and our very own vampire opera to set your blood racing! Yes, we continue our acclaimed collaboration with Cork Operatic Society by co-producing Der Vampyr, a Midsummer Eve’s blood curdling treat to watch out for. When you add to this two outstanding West End productions – Sebastian Faulk’s gripping World War I romance Birdsong is an epic show not to be missed plus for all the family, the international sensation that is Potted Potter (all seven books in under 70 minutes of uproarious fun!) – then we can rightly boast the Everyman is where it’s at in Cork for the very best in live performance entertainment! On a final note, before handing over the baton to the new leadership team who are to be charged

with taking the Everyman on from here, we both would like to take this opportunity to say what a pride and a joy it has been to serve this great theatre and the people of Cork. The Everyman is a unique and priceless gem in a world in which so much of value is being tarnished or lost; not just because of the landmark auditorium that remains a marvel of period architecture, drenched in atmosphere and that extra special ‘something’ that makes a classic theatre the rarity that it is, but for the team who live and breathe the Everyman every day, and who together give so much of themselves, making this somewhere that once you have experienced its unique (that word again) persona, it will forever live in your heart! We thank you all - staff, artists and patrons - for the enormous support and comradeship you have given us and wherever we go, the Everyman goes with us. Now before we both get all tearful… on with the shows!

Desolate Heaven

by Ailís Ní Ríain

Acclaimed Cork writer and composer Ailís Ní Ríain has been making waves in UK theatre for some time but her work has rarely been produced in her homeland. This haunting, chilling drama is a story of two young girls burdened with unnatural responsibility. They run away together and meet a bizarre trio of women on their journey. It is a story of falling in love, of fairytales, of feeling too deeply and having to grow up too soon. The play was awarded the Tom Erdhardt Peggy Ramsay Award in 2012. Written by Ailís Ní Ríain and directed by Tony McCleaneFay, Desolate Heaven stars well known Irish actress Mary McEvoy in a tour-deforce performance as three different characters in this dynamic play, alongside Irene Kelleher and Áine Ryan as the two young girls.

In Jim Nolan’s richly textured new play, Ireland of the 1930’s is invoked as a tussle for the soul of the nation takes place in a small seaside town where those fixed in a post civil war Ireland clash with a sensibility that rejoices in the fluidity and mind flexing power of international jazz culture. As the Blueshirts march the land, and fleeing German Jewish exiles arrive seeking sanctuary can Johnny Kinnane withstand the sands of time and rekindle his belief in the liberation that is Dreamland? Directed by the writer Jim Nolan and performed by a large cast of acclaimed stage actors, this production promises to be one of the most culturally potent plays of 2014. The Man in the Woman’s Shoes

By Mikel murfi

It’s October 1978. Pope John Paul I is not long dead, autumn is closing in and Pat Farnon has ‘some business’ to do in town. The Man In The Woman’s Shoes follows Pat as he walks the 5 miles from his wee white cottage to town and back and the marvels that he meets along the way. It’s a charming encounter - an ageing man with a boundless enthusiasm for life. Hilariously funny, tender and at times downright daft, The Man In The Woman’s Shoes, will leave you uplifted and in love with life again. The show is written by and stars Mikel Murfi. It was originally commissioned by Sligo County Council Arts Service and the Hawk’s Well Theatre, Sligo as part of the Bealtaine Festival. Running time is 70 minutes with no interval.

Meet our Executive Director / CEO Eimear O’Herlihy Favourite thing about working at the Everyman

It’s the Everyman! That’s my favourite thing. It’s such a beautiful building, I’m really proud of the work we produce and present and we have an amazing team of people who are so dedicated to making the Everyman the best that it can be. We all work really hard to create a welcoming atmosphere for audiences and artists. And every time I walk into the auditorium I am struck by how beautiful it is and what an honour it is to work here – that never goes away!

What I do…

I am ultimately responsible for the financial and operational management of the Everyman – all the fun stuff! I am in charge of all contracts whether for visiting companies, cast and crew for house productions or Everyman staff. I make sure that we are insured for the work we do, that we provide a safe and welcoming experience for everyone who enters the Everyman and that we somehow find enough money to keep doing what we do. I’m also responsible for human resources, grant applications and building relationships with all stakeholders. Our artistic director puts together an amazing programme and I then work with every department in the house to make sure that everything is in place to make that programme happen. I make lots of lists and try to do at least some of those things.

Best moments

Pagliacci! Everything about it personified what the Everyman stands for and what makes this such a wonderful place to be. It was a team effort from start to finish and everyone who worked on it – regardless of their role – took such pride and delight in their work. It cemented a fantastic collaborative relationship with Cork Operatic Society as well as bringing us into contact with so many talented people living and working in Cork from the creative team to circus performers to actor-musicians to the children’s chorus. The production was a joy to watch and seemed to delight both opera first-timers and long-time fans. Based on the response from audiences and critics we achieved the artistic excellence that we always strive for. And to cap it off we won Best Opera at last year's Irish Times Theatre Awards.

Scariest moment

28 March 2014. On that date I’ll be moving on from the Everyman after six and a half years. I love my job but I’m ready for a change and I’m really excited about what the future holds. But when that day comes I know I’ll be devastated to leave all this behind. They’ll have to drag me out!

Favourite show

Any show that makes more than it costs! I’ve been lucky to see an incredible range of productions during my time here and it’s impossible to pick a personal favourite. Interestingly the shows that really stand out in my mind are one-man shows where you are completely transported to another world by a single spellbinding performance – Man of Valour, Tom Crean, The Girl Who Forgot to Sing Badly, The Chronicles of Oggle, Howie the Rookie and the incredible Pat Kinevane with Silent and Forgotten.

PARKING WITHOUT THE DRAMA
