A Note from our Artistic Director MICHAEL BARKER-CAVEN
Christmas may be behind us but this brochure makes me feel like Santa! So many goodies for you, our Everyman friends and family, to enjoy! Classic theatre, contemporary Irish drama, comedy, circus, and music to celebrate! We play host to old friends, new stars, and returning prodigal sons! It’s all here in our great pick and mix! But first some thrilling news to kick start the year; in conjunction with Cork Operatic Society, our summer production of Pagliacci received two nominations in the prestigious 2012 Irish Times Theatre Awards, including the big one – Best Opera Production! These accolades are not just recognition for the visionary team effort, but support for the city of Cork and the manner in which you embraced the work. We will use this shot in the arm as further inspiration to bring you more of the best home produced music and drama in the year ahead. Talking of which, there is much talk of the paucity of quality new writing for theatre,
so I am delighted to say that we are taking up this challenge, declaring 2013 to be ‘The Year of the New Play!’ Along with our partners, the Everyman has bold plans to mount a number of new works this year. With the support of Cork County Council Arts Office, the groundbreaking ‘Everyman County Touring Initiative’, will showcase the talents of local writers, directors and actors in venues across Cork County before being presented at the Everyman. Also, keep an eye out for this summer’s world premiere of a new play by artist in residence Carmel Winters, already flagged by national commentators as one of the highlights of the cultural year. And I couldn’t mention Carmel without drawing your attention to the Dear Cork page. So you see your theatre remains a hotbed of creative intent; all we ask is that as often as you can, buy a ticket or two and come share in the joy that is the unique Everyman experience. MICHAEL WINSLOW
KEITH BARRY THE DARK SIDE
Michael Winslow, multi-talented comedian and best known for his role as Sgt. Larvelle “Motor Mouth” Jones in the Police Academy films, makes his first appearance at the Everyman with a BRAND NEW SHOW, never before seen in Cork! The American actor and comedian is known as the “Man of 10,000 Sound Effects” for his ability to make realistic sound effects using only his voice. Whether he is recreating the frenzy of Jimi Hendrix playing the guitar, or the roar of a jet plane, his unique talent is truly remarkable and his versatility admirable and enjoyable for all ages!
After a hugely successful 2012 tour Keith is back at The Everyman with his BRAND NEW SHOW – THE DARK SIDE. This show will be Keith’s most controversial to date as he explores everything that encompasses ‘The Dark Side’. He will take the audience on a theatrical rollercoaster ride where they will participate in astounding feats based around the occult, ouija boards, remote viewing, past life regression, and unspeakable acts. He will open the door and invite the audience with him on this journey of exploration – are you brave enough to step through the door and journey with him? Unlike his other shows people can come to the show without the fear of being pulled on stage as it is only the brave souls who openly volunteer who will end up on stage. If you scare easily, then quite simply: Don’t come alone! Suitable for 15 years and over.

GYRE AND GIMBLE PRODUCTIONS & VERDANT PRODUCTIONS PRESENT
ALONE IT STANDS BY JOHN BREEN
On October 31, 1978, Munster played the mighty All Blacks, the undisputed kings of rugby. Munster played as if their lives depended on it, and even the earthworms in the Limerick pitch were cheering for them. The Goliaths didn’t know what had hit them: the score was 12-0 to the Irish side. A multitude of different stories weave together to tell the tale of the hype and, indeed, nervousness running up to and during the big match. Stories of birth, tragedy and building bonfires prevail, as the play charts the personal stories of various characters and their whereabouts on the momentous day. In a virtuosic ensemble effort, six actors play 62 roles including the Munster team, the Kiwis, the two coaches, the ref, the crowd, the press, a pregnant woman, several children, a dog and even the ball itself!

RICHARD II Within The Hollow Crown
BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
‘For God’s sake, let us sit upon the ground And tell sad stories of the death of kings’. Everyman Artistic Director Michael Barker-Caven teams up with Cork actor Denis Conway and his award-winning company Ouroboros to direct the first professional staging of this stunning masterpiece ever to be seen in Cork. Fresh from its opening at the Abbey/Peacock and with a large cast of leading Irish actors, this thrilling production takes up the challenge laid down by critic Fintan O’Toole that now is the time for Ireland to demand its own version of Shakespeare. The king is responsible for the health of the land. But what happens when a king uses the land as his private plaything and bleeds it dry? Should not the people revolt? The first challenge to his authority arises in Ireland, where the king goes in search of riches and reward. But will he achieve more vainglory or return a changed and challenged man? Containing some of Shakespeare’s most beautiful and haunting verse, this timeless classic of power politics, civil war and the evolution of the soul, will be one of the undoubted highlights of the 2013 Irish theatre season. Wed 8 May “Shakespeare in Ireland” Post Show discussion with the director and cast. Fri 10 May “Playing Shakespeare” workshop for professional actors. Places limited. See website for details.

DEATH OF A SALESMAN
BY ARTHUR MILLER
“You can’t eat the orange and throw the peel away - a man is not a piece of fruit.” Ever since its premiere in 1949, this undoubted masterpiece has taken its rightful place as one of the most popular and enduring classics of all time. A stirring critique of the “American Dream”, the play follows the plight of aging, down on-his-luck salesman Willy Loman as he struggles to deal with an ever changing world. Despite years of tireless service to the company he discovers he has become surplus to requirement, and as his employers loosen their ties so Willy is propelled towards a destructive cocktail of blind fantasy and failing dreams. Can his family save him or will Willy give way and take the final plunge? As part of 2013’s ‘The Gathering’, Irish American TV and film actor Patrick Cronin returns to Cork to star on stage for the first time in his homeland alongside an outstanding cast of established and emerging Irish theatre artists. Showcasing Kollectiv’s trademark use of multimedia and with cutting-edge staging, this unique production will bring you on a journey which will be both heart-warming and heart-breaking in equal measure. THE GATHERING: DEAR CORK Have you or a member of your family ever received a letter (or email) containing a story so gripping, so memorable, so treasured that you just had to keep it for posterity? Did one of your relatives or ancestors leave the county and head away only to send back tales of distant lands and extraordinary happenings so intoxicating that the memory lives on? Would you like to share this hidden gem with the people of Cork, and together unearth our hidden history, the history of everyman and everywoman? Would you thrill at the thought of this lost history being brought back to dramatic life?
Dear Cork is a county-wide project run by the Everyman together with writer-in-residence Carmel Winters and Cork City and County Councils. We aim to reanimate the hidden wealth of stories of Cork down through the decades by inviting the public to take part in a gathering of eye-opening correspondences on the theme of ‘comings and goings’ sent to and from its shores, both past and present. Bringing together writers, directors, actors, libraries, community groups, online bloggers, archives and a host of other bodies, this delightful program will first uncover, then collate (via a specially designed website/archive) before reanimating through dramatizations and readings, the stories which capture our imagination, opening up new horizons into the history, personality and rich cultural heritage of the region. So, if you have or know of such a letter and are willing to share it, log onto our website at www.everymanpalace.com/dearcork for more details. And whilst we get back to you with our detailed information pack, head up to that attic, root around in the old bottom drawer, search through the files on your computer and dig out and get ready to share that special correspondence that will speak to one and all of Dear Cork.
Meet our Production Assistant Naomi Daly WHAT I DO…
BEST MOMENT
Probably the most difficult question to answer! I work directly with the Artistic Director on the yearly programme and help out with the production of house shows. I fill in with other departments when needed. I am the point of contact for all visiting theatre companies and for local actors and theatre professionals. In my job you need to be able to adapt to what’s required on a constant basis, no two weeks have ever been the same, but that’s what I love about it.
Can I have a top ten? If not, the dress rehearsal for Pagliacci last summer, stuff was still going wrong but it was the first glimpse of what we’d made all coming together – very exciting!
FAVOURITE THING ABOUT WORKING AT THE EVERYMAN
That would be a very close call between Man of Valour and Tom Crean – two very different shows that create worlds you get completely lost in.
The team – almost everyone has been here for years so we all know each other really well.
SCARIEST MOMENT Every time Michael opens my door and says… “I’ve got an idea!” FAVOURITE SHOW
