A life well-lived is even better when it involves great food. For couples, it can also be a shared bond. Gabrielle and AJ Dillon, for instance, share both a life and a love of great food.

Gabrielle is a photographer and political science journalist, and AJ is the well-known running back with the Green Bay Packers. Newly married and expecting their first child, the attractive couple spent AJ’s birthday at Sturgeon Bay’s Drömhus restaurant and event space this past March, greeting representatives of the dozen restaurants they had chosen for the Dining Guide’s 2023 cover photo shoot.

Despite the barrage of questions and requests, Gabrielle and AJ shared their love of Door County and the Peninsula’s food with consistent graciousness and positivity. When AJ was asked about his birthday plans, AJ quickly said “This! This is my birthday dream!”

The photo shoot came about because of the impromptu Door County promotion the couple has been sharing on social media about the local restaurants they love. “We are absolute foodies,” Gabrielle said. “We love trying new food, actively scout out the best spots for different cuisines, and we have experience food tasting all over the world.”

Door County is their main focus, as Gabrielle spent her youth visiting and working here. “When I met AJ in 2020, during a time where outdoor activities had quite an appeal, I decided to show him beautiful Door County,” she said. “Needless to say, ever since we’ve been traveling up to the county and enjoying everything it has to offer.” Now with the baby’s arrival, this passion will surely become a family tradition.

The couple visited local restaurants, shook hands with bar owners, took photos with fans, and then posted their experiences on Instagram. Soon, it became a media sensation that AJ was spending so much time on the Peninsula. In fact, he playfully touted in sports interviews that he hoped to be presented with a key to the county, a tongue-in-cheek wish granted in 2021 by Destination Door County CEO Julie Gilbert.

So why do the Dillons go out of their way to devote so much time to this endeavor? “It’s to share with the community our love of food and promote the special Ma-Pa places we enjoy,” AJ said. “And let our friends know where to eat when visiting.”

Their passion for food extends into their philanthropy, and they partner with Feeding America Wisconsin to help support food-insecure youth. “We wanted to give back to the community through a purposeful, deliberate plan to help children,” AJ said.

Dining with the Dillons is the couples’ Instagram account where the public can learn about their favorite dining spots, in-county and out-of-county. From a dive-bar’s deep-fried dishes to five-star small plates, the couple relates the ambiance, service, and their experiences whenever and wherever they dine. Here’s a selection of some of their favorites, all chose by the Dillons to participate in the recent Dining Guide cover photo shoot.

“We found the AC Tap one night and were told that the garlic parmesan wings and wimpy burgers would be the best we’d ever have.” AJ, a wing connoisseur, was skeptical. “Needless to say, a couple dozen wings later, we were hooked! We have made trips specifically for the wings, only to head right back to Green Bay afterwards.”

“Al Johnson’s is one of our favorite places to go on Sunday mornings for the famous Swedish pancakes.” AJ was so surprised and in disbelief when he first saw the goats on the roof. “It remains one of our favorite, funniest memories of Door County.”

“Alexander’s is the most timeless supper club restaurant in Door County and is always one of our favorite options for dinner. The shrimp scampi and lobster special on Tuesdays are always a hit. We love how traditional and homey Alexander’s is and that we can visit all year long.”

“Bayside Tavern is where countless memories are made with family and friends for late night drinks and unique spicy cheese curds. The bartenders and servers are so friendly. We have such a connection to this place; we even held our wedding after-party there.”

“The Boathouse on the Bay’s lobster roll is comparable to the classic New England version, and where AJ is from! A little slice of home roots and heaven for AJ but located in the Midwest. The Boathouse is always so fresh and has amazing views.”

“Burton’s on the Bay has been one of our favorite new spots. We love that we can take our family’s boat there, dock it and head in for lunch. The views of the water are absolutely stunning, and the menu is to die for. We always get their tenderloin bites.”

“Chives Door County is a favorite for a nice family dinner. We have so many memories sitting in the ‘library’ area and watching the chefs display the desserts and plate the meals. The classic Caesar salad is a favorite and we love that their menu has a French theme to it. We also love doing happy hour and oysters on the outdoor patio. This was where we had our brunch wedding party and had maybe a little too much fun!”

“The Fireside Restaurant’s food brings a Southern charm to DC. Their chicken lips are a hidden secret on the menu and AJ’s favorite. In addition, we love that we can go in for breakfast at their Big Easy café next door and get beignets or a breakfast skillet. The staff and owners are so friendly and generous, it has made every visit so much better than just simply enjoying the food.”

“Island Fever is a hidden gem. We love feeling like we are on a beach vacation but really, we are still in northern Wisconsin. Our favorite part is watching the live broadcast of the beach on the TV. We order their cocktail flights and let the bartenders pick them for us. It never disappoints. In addition, if you’re drinking, it’s an amazing place to load up on appetizers like the potato wedges.”

“Kitty O’Reilly’s Irish Pub is one of our newfound favorite foodie spots. We finally made a day trip into Sturgeon Bay and stopped there. Instantly, we knew we had a connection with the place. The bartenders and owners were incredible, the perch basket was a classic, and the restaurant itself has the small-town charm we look for. We are excited to head back and try their famous Bloody Mary.”

“The White Gull Inn is one of the most timeless locations in Door County — and for a reason. The Cherry-Stuffed French toast is to die for. We love the emphasis on local Door County cherries and how unique this dish is. The first time we tried it, we were in awe. The restaurant and inn are so charming and classic Door County.”

“Wickman House is an award-winning restaurant and tough to get into for a reason. This is our favorite spot for a date night. The food is unbelievable: fresh, locally sourced, sustainable, and it tastes amazing. The atmosphere is cozy and lively, and we love the staff. Our number one recommendation is for a craft cocktail. The bartenders know how to do it right. We tell them what we are looking for and they always seem to come up with the perfect drink for our tastebuds. So impressive.”

“There isn’t one Door County experience or meal that sticks out, because we appreciate the uniqueness and individuality of every meal and business,”

Gabrielle said.

“The commonality is a friendly team, great food, and a personable ambiance.”

The Fresh whitefish caught daily… from the same waters outside our doors!

Fish boils are Door County’s only indigenous dish, brought to the Peninsula by Scandinavian immigrants.

Our Masterboiler slices fresh fish into chunks, then boils it with baby red potatoes and sweet onions.

The fish boil kettle is brought to a boil over an open fire… when the fish is cooked to perfection, a small amount of kerosene is poured into the base of the fire. The result? A spectacular burst of flames and the famous boil-over that leaves the food ready to be immediately served at your table inside the restaurant.

An Authentic Door County Fish Boil

Every evening beginning at 4:30 pm we specialize in serving the most famous native dish of the Door Peninsula, the feast that is known as the “Door County Fish Boil” is a tradition unique to the area. The settlers of past centuries came to this wilderness to seek their fortunes in the heavily timbered forests and bountiful waters of the Penin sula.

Out of their resourcefulness and spirit of cooperation the “Fish Boil” evolved, the fisherman and farmers provided sustenance for groups of hungry lumbermen and settlers. In preparing the meal, technology has found no way to improve upon the equipment and methods of centuries ago. The authenticity of our “Door County Fish Boil” is assured, as the techique has been preserved and passed down through generations from Matthew’s grandfather, to his father, and him.

Our “Door County Fish Boil” consists of fresh, locally caught whitefish cut into steaks, baby red potatoes and Texas sweet boiling onions. The ingredients are boiled to perfection outdoors in large stainless steel kettles over a wood fire. Salt is the only seasoning used, although it’s primary function is to increase the boiling temperature of the water. During the cooking process, the fish oils naturally rise to the surface of the water. Immediately before removing the fish, potatoes and onions from the kettle, the “Master Boiler” will throw #1 fuel oil directly into the fire beneath the kettle resulting in a tremendous burst of flames that force the water and fish oils to “Boil Over” the rim. This signals the end of the cooking process and the beginning of a wonderful dining experience.

The famous White Gull Fish Boil is a Door County tradition. It features locally caught Lake Michigan whitefish cooked outside over an open fire and is served in our dining room with baby red potatoes, melted butter, our fresh coleslaw, homemade breads and our own Door County cherry pie for dessert. Roasted chicken or a quinoa salad are available for non-fish eaters. Fish boils are served Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights in summer, and on Friday nights in winter.

On those evenings we do not have a fish boil, try our Candlelight Dinner, offering a variety of entrees and nightly specials. Our menu features the finest meats, fowl and fish, prepared from regional recipes handed down by generations of cooks. Relax in our candlelit dining room, or on the patio in summer, as your dinner is thoughtfully prepared to order. See our separate menu for the Candlelight Dinner.

FISH BOIL RESERVATIONS

We recommend making fish boil reservations well in advance, especially in the summer and fall. During this busy season, there are three serving times. In order for our hostess to seat you and for you to watch the cooking procedure, we request that you arrive 15-20 minutes before your reservation and check in at the front desk. 920.868.3517

STANDBY

If the fish boils are already full by reservation, you may wish to use our standby list. We seat from the standby if people who do have reservations are not here by 15 minutes after the serving time. We begin taking names on standby one 1/2 hour before each of the 3 serving times (4:30 for the 5:00 seating; 6:00 for the 6:30 seating; 7:30 for the 8:00 seating).

You must be here in person to put your name on the list (no calls for standby, please). We would like to stress that being on standby does not automatically guarantee that you will get a table. It means that we will try to seat you if someone with a reservation does not arrive. The chances of being seated from the standby list vary, but we frequently are able to seat tables from standby.

In 1912, Door County merchant pioneer, Al Mickelson, built a special place for Sister Bay residents and visitors to purchase food and enjoy ice cream treats. The store became known as a source of local information in addition to excellent food and service. Today the tradition lives on in the Door County Ice Cream Factory & Sandwich Shoppe.

The Door County Ice Cream Factory serves its own real, super premium homemade ice cream which is made with the finest all-natural ingreients right in the store.
