The Door County Shopping Experience
Door County...300 miles of craggy, Great Lakes shoreline dotted with lighthouses, featuring epic sunsets and bluffy vistas yearround. The communities are a string of pearls, running up and down the peninsula, tying us all together. But most of all, the backbone of this place is the small business owners and entrepreneurs making this slice of the Midwest a
vibrant, enriching place to call home, second home, or just home for a weekend. Digging into the area’s retail offerings, travelers will be surprised to note the prevalence of independently-owned, unique establishments brimming with charm and high-quality goods.
Authentic tweed from County Donegal in Ireland, novels by Wisconsin authors, and locally-grown lavender bath bombs
are just a smattering of the products you can source here.
“Door County is one of those relatively rare tourism destinations that has never lost its connection to small family businesses that span generations,” explains Lars Johnson, co-owner of Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Butik. “As a result, it’s what visitors have come to expect, that they won’t be offered
chain restaurants or chain retail stores when they come here, they’ll instead find successful small businesses that you won’t find everywhere else,” he adds.
Now let’s GO...shopping in Door County.
We’ll start in Sturgeon Bay, in the shadow of its famous steel bridge. This “city” of Door County is more than just the county seat of the peninsula—
it’s a community with lovely retail offerings around every corner. The beating heart of Sturgeon Bay is historic Third Avenue, which boasts a slew of shops, and the rest of downtown opens up around this main drag. Stop into The Pearl of Door County , an art gallery and collective representing more than fifty creators. Feel the collaborative energy of this place, see the lights shining in the windows, and browse mosaics, paintings, and pottery, with new pieces added each week. Experiences are on offer too, a diverse range from forest bathing to yoga nidra to energy work.
Door County Candy ’s bright cherry and pristine white awning is hard to miss. This vintage-style confectionary serves up classic, homemade treats like saltwater taffy, fudge, caramel corn, ice cream, and chocolate. Owner Terry Ullman shares that fresh fudge and gourmet chocolates are top sellers. “For the fudges, sea salt caramel is number one,
and chocolate peanut butter and Door County cherry are other favorites,” he says. Visitors should be sure to try pie bars, which are exclusive to the shop and available in four varieties. Door County Candy feels like “a step back in time, a nostalgic, old-fashioned escape,” notes Ullman. “It’s overwhelming in a good way.” It’s just a short hop or a few steps to another longtime area favorite, Novel Bay Booksellers . Owner Liz Welter shares, “We like to say there are no bad books at Novel Bay.” This spot, which has been open since July 5th, 2018, is Welter’s second-wind retirement project. “We were lucky to pick the spot we did – it’s an amazing part of the city, a big downtown revitalization project,” she adds. Visitors can feel the energy of Sturgeon Bay and enjoy the hardcover magic of a carefully curated selection. ‘I research every single book,” Welter explains. Vintage-style postcards, warm wood paneling, and cozy arm -
chairs add ambiance and soul. Browse local authors, historical works, children’s books, and an impressive STEM-inspired collection.
Our next stop is BLISS , a boutique conveniently located next door to the bookshop in the heart of Sturgeon Bay’s Historic Third Avenue. The owner, Todd Trimberger, says the store lives up to its moniker: it’s pure bliss, with “a fantabulous collection of interesting gifts, accessories for you and joyful adornments for your home or home away from home.” Two levels full of fanciful glassware, imaginative artwork, dreamy ceramics, unique lamps, and great accent furniture make for “a shopping experience that is not to be missed...truly a sensory journey to be explored,” he adds. Pro tip: Consider a stop during the Christmas season to see the shop fully decked out in holiday glory.
Let’s head north on Highway 42, part of the Door County Coastal Byway. In the
tiny town of Carlsville, we can experience three of the area’s most famous exports. Join me at Door County Coffee , the first and largest roaster in the area. This family-owned and operated establishment just celebrated 30 years in business. During coffee class, try the Death’s Door Blend, the darkest roast available. This Coffee 101 Tour looks behind the curtain to share the Door County Coffee story and explain the high quality of their specialty coffee, crafted with only the top two percent of Arabica beans. Fun flavors like Grasshopper, a nod to the minty supper club dessert cocktail, add an extra taste of Wisconsin. Enjoy a pop of famous Door County cherries in the seasonal food offerings at the onsite cafe. Note the bright tartness of cherry chutney on a turkey sandwich and the crunch of fresh lettuce on soft baked bread. After a quick bite, wind through aisles and aisles of local goodies and countless coffee offerings in the ample
retail space. Not sure what to purchase? Try perennial top seller Highlander Grogg, known for its luscious caramel notes.
Nearby is Door County Candle Company . “Our new candle bar gives people a truly immersive experience of how we make our candles,” shares owner Christiana Trapani. “Scent is our strongest sense,” she adds. In roughly 30-45 minutes, says Trapani, visitors can build a custom candle. At-
tendees get to smell their way through different fragrances and pick up to three to craft one all their own. They’ll learn insider info about the scent families during the process. The next step is wicking the jars, then getting to the actual candle making. “Our favorite scent a customer made was an old-fashioned, bourbon-scented creation,” the owner says. Plus, there’s a large retail footprint if folks aren’t interested in getting their hands dirty.
“You can walk in and see the candle bar area and get the feel of it but shop without doing the experience,” she explains. Cross the street for a trip to Door Peninsula Winery and Door County Distillery . This spot is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Smell distinct distillery scents like rum molasses, whiskey mash, and the wafts of fermentation. Get a look at the inner workings with free daily tours, offered on the hour from 10am
to 4pm. Upgrade options, like wine tastings, are available for those who want to sip away.
Marketing and Sales Director Rob Peterson says, “We have over 10,000 square feet of retail space” in the winery and distillery, focusing on “cherry everything here.” The famed Door County cherries rightfully dominate the offerings, with cherry wine, cherry brandy, and cherry vodka, three of the most popular picks. It’s not just about the booze, either,
as there’s a large food area, stocked with locally-made products like cherry BBQ sauce, olive oil, fudge, and cherry jam.
Now let’s move on to Egg Harbor, an artsy enclave along Highway 42. Before we reach the village, pop into Woodwalk Gallery . “It almost feels like you’re pulling into a private residence,” owner Joslyn Villalpando says of the dreamy 10acre farmstead property with rolling meadows and a large lawn. Inside the barn, the milk room has been transformed into a bright, white gallery space. “It’s a huge open-air, open-feeling barn,” she adds. Visitors can wander from the milk room to a new wing for a more contemporary vibe or check out the original horse stalls, where art is now displayed. There’s a cozy upstairs loft space, too, a former artist’s studio complete with sun-dappled light and creative energy. “It’s really special, such a magical little spot,” Villalpando says. Those checking out Woodwalk
Gallery will find a mix of types of art, from ceramics to quilts, paintings to woodwares.
Main Street Shops , located on Egg Harbor’s main drag, is one of the few indoor malls in Door County, and features 17 highly unique shops that run the gamut. There’s clothing for babies and kids, leisurewear, two high-end womens’ wear shops, and even a sleepwear shop; plus, you’ll find artisan wood products by local craftsmen, an old-fashioned candy store, a shop with a huge inventory of holiday décor and ornaments, and even stained glass artwork. When you need a pick-me-up, there’s a coffeeshop with tasty food items.
Further down Highway 42, it’s time to pop into Main Street Market, a locally-owned, full service grocer. Beyond the usual suspects, like fresh produce and a large meat department, this spot stocks gourmet and specialty items to elevate any Door County dining experience. Look no further than the late harvest Riesling vinegar,

Cross the road and head to the blufftop Cappaert
Contemporary Gallery . “Our space is an 1800s log home overlooking the water and sitting atop the Niagara Escarpment,” shares artist Ginnie Cappaert. Her small, contemporary gallery features her abstract landscape paintings and the work of 30 other independent artists. Visitors can find ceramics, glasswork, sculpture, jewelry and more. “A sense of calm and peace with a bit of color is the vibe here,” she says. “It’s really about the experience. Door County is magical!” Cappaert adds.
We now journey north to a commercial center of Door County, Fish Creek, a mid-peninsula spot always brimming with activity. With so much to choose from, we’ll largely focus on some female-owned and female-helmed shops in the area. South of town, stop
by The Ginger House , which is “a picnic around the world” describes the owner, Ginger Baron. Part of the Settlement Shops , this store is known for fresh flowers and colorful homewares like blankets from Lima and baskets from Ghana. Guests can snag local Wisconsin cheeses and wines, too. Custom Door County toile pajamas are another highlight and top seller in the specialty shop. “There’s just something magical there,” Baron says. “It just transplants you to a different place.” That’s one picnic we can’t wait to be a part of.
Downtown Fish Creek is a prime shopping spot. An enduring community favorite there is the nautical-inspired On Deck Clothing . Though there are three locations spread across the county, the late 1800s charm and the vintage Chris-Craft boat in the Fish Creek store make it our favorite. Owner Mitch Larson notes that the space has a warm, inviting feel. “The floors are the original hard -
wood, there’s shiplap siding and a beadboard ceiling,” he adds. “It’s just beautiful craftsmanship; we’ve restored it to its original condition.” Enjoy all manner of upscale clothing offerings for men and women, including a wide array of Vineyard Vines gear; the shop is one of the top sellers of the preppy, maritime brand in the entire Midwest. Footwear, accessories and kid’s clothing round out the offerings at On Deck.
Across the street, don’t
miss Sister Golden , a mother-daughter-owned shop. This funky, eclectic, botanically-inspired boutique is especially well-known for its flower art prints made from found foliage. Grab a best-selling calendar and scoop vintage rugs, sconces from India, plush throws, and jewelry crafted by independent artists.
Around the bend, O’Meara’s Irish House is a must-stop. “It’s like walking into a store in Ireland,” owner Megan O’Meara explains. Feel
the plush, soft wool from Irish sheep. “We’re known for our quality woolens, knits, and jewelry,” she adds. Listen for the permanent soundtrack of traditional Irish music. “We never tire of it,” she laughs. Another standout item is the candles from Rathbornes, the oldest candle company in the world, with roots dating back to 1488 in Dublin. Visitors can smell popular scents like Dublin Retreat, with notes of musk, black ebony, and amber. O’Meara’s is a genuinely immersive, authen -
tic, even surprising shopping experience.
Head to the Top of the Hill Shops for a pop into Love Letter , Door County’s only women’s clothing consignment shop. Owner Laurel Janisse carefully curates and hand selects each piece sold in this upscale shop with the aim of reducing fast fashion waste through thrifting. “I love sustainable brands like Patagonia, Reformation, Eileen Fisher, quality fabrics from Tory Burch and Theory, and time -
less styles from Ralph Lauren, Madewell, and Everlane,” she says. Part of the fun is the thrill of the hunt and snatching an unexpected find. “Items are constantly changing, and there’s only one of each, so it’s different each time you shop here,” she explains. “I absolutely love having this shop! It truly is a love letter to myself and all the women who shop here and support our mission,” Janisse adds.
In the same collection of shops, pop over to DC Chocolate Design Cafe , a sweet escape in Fish Creek. Chocolatier and owner Kara VanderLeest shares that customers can’t get over how fantastic chocolate and coffee smell together.
“Everyone says, ‘Oh my God, it smells so good in here,” she says. The aroma might hit first, but when walking in, visitors are greeted, front and center, with a 9-foot-long custom truffle case. These top-selling, hand-painted beauties are the stars of the show. “The shopping experience is fun to
pick and choose your flavors,” VanderLeest adds. People enjoy the interactive experience. “It’s fun to choose for gifting or yourself,” she notes. “Some customers pick by colors and others by flavors,” she explains. Try cherry cream and cherry caramel, made with local Door County cherries and decked out in bright seasonal colors. Sister Bay is the next village on the west side of Door County. There’s lots of shopping to enjoy, starting with clothing store Spot (which has a sister store in Egg Harbor).
Owner Jennie Bexell says, “Shopping should be a treat... the music, the mood, the staff, and all the pretty things are here to make you step into a happy place.” There’s so much variety in clothes, too, with many bright, fun colors. “I try really hard to cover all the styles,” she adds. “Life is too short to wear boring clothes.” And with hundreds of brands to choose from you’re sure to find something cozy and comfortable that suits your needs.
Cross the road to check out Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Butik , currently celebrating 75 years in business. If we’re lucky, the resident goats might just be grazing on the roof! Part of the famous eatery, the onsite Butik features traditional Scandinavian goods of all types, while Skål is Al’s newer Nordic-inspired standalone store, located just south of the restaurant. At the Butik, stock up on the restaurant’s Swedish pancake
mix, lingonberry jam, or cute items like a goat print apron with a Peter Pan collar. Traditional sweaters and shoes from Scandinavia are other popular picks. At Skål, check out the mix of curated modern Scandinavian products, clothing, and housewares.
Seasonal events help Sister Bay shine, too. “ Christkindlmarkt Door County is popular for the same reasons as other similar events across the world,” says John Nelson,
the event coordinator. “Our visitors are hoping to do their pre-Christmas gift shopping, so we offer handmade artisan products by local artists and craftspeople, plus Christmas music, great Nordic street
The event is an annual major fundraiser for the property’s owner, the Sister Bay Historical Society.
Head to our next stop, the Door County Wildwood Market , north of Sister Bay.
foods, and German glühwein, the traditional hot drink,” he adds. This market stands out for another reason, too. Instead of being in a bustling urban area, it sits on a 7-acre heritage site draped in the rural, wintery beauty of Sister Bay.
Items like floral bouquets, canned goods, and specialty bakery picks make this more than an upscale fresh farm stand. But activities really help amp up the shopping experience for guests. July is the perfect time to visit for pick-
your-own cherries. The fall brings an annual corn maze and pumpkins for the family.
Another Northern Door town worthy of a visit is Ellison Bay. For a caffeine boost, try Kick Ash Coffee , a locally-owned spot celebrating five years in its current location. It’s not just coffee here, either. Owner Carol Ash says, “We have a little smattering of everything, gifts for everyone,” like self-care items, books, cards, and local products. Plus, Kick Ash makes its own very popular granola and small batches of roasted coffee. “Our cherry almond is the most popular granola,” she adds. Want to feel even better about shopping small? This coffee shop is a force for good, supporting multiple area nonprofits with special blends that give back every time you purchase. Order Dark Sky to support Newport State Park, the state’s first International Dark Sky Park.
Further up the road, visit Island Orchard Cider , a
Door County cider house. Focused on Normandy-style dry ciders, the operation is among many high-quality beverage purveyors around the county. Try some award-winning ciders like B rut Apple Reserve, Kingston Black, Pear Reserve, and Spruce Tip, with a tasting flight in the taproom; Apple Cherry and Apple Lavender are other top hits that use local ingredients. Then, stock up for gifts or home and purchase your favorites. This taste of Door County is a memorable one.
Taking the ferry from Northport, over the renowned Death’s Door, to Washington Island is an experience in itself. The sweeping views of Door County, the so-called Cape Cod of the Midwest, are unmatched. Some days, the lake swells with activity, but even when it’s choppy, a trip is well worth it to see Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm and Shop , the Midwest’s largest lavender farm. Marketing Director Julie Imig says, “As visitors walk through the lavender
Kick Ash Coffee field, they experience the true essence of lavender firsthand! It is a return to nature as well as the serenity and beauty of 20,000 lavender plants.” Inside the bespoke shop, there’s even more to note. “When visitors enter the Shop, they first experience the aroma of lavender,” Imig explains. As they stroll through, they can sample over 300 different kinds of lavender products, including gourmet
treats. (Don’t miss the famous macarons!) “Another sensory experience is sipping one of the signature drinks as they overlook the lavender fields at The Distillery, the wine and craft beer bar,” she adds. Plan a peak season visit for July or August, when the fields usually burst with color and blooms. There’s quality and craftsmanship to be found on the quiet side of the peninsula, too.
Let’s head down Highway 57, part of the Door County Coastal Byway, to pretty Baileys Harbor. (Time the drive correctly to catch an epic sunrise over Lake Michigan, perhaps with a local cup of joe in hand.)
On the right, let’s visit Jackalope Trading Co. This bright, bespoke space effuses Scandi chic vibes with light wood shelving. Visitors can view a kaleidoscope of taper
candles, feel beautiful handcrafted leather pouches, and breathe in the fresh air from verdant houseplants on nearly every surface. Rainbow prisms sparkle in the window, illuminating locally crafted goods like hand-marbled clothing.
Our next, final stop is southward on Highway 57 to the old fishing village of Jacksonport, where Jacksonport Cottage Gallery & Gifts ,
opened in 1984, has since become synonymous with unique handcrafted gifts. Amish quilts, wall hangings, pillows and rugs, cloth dolls, turned wooden bowls, it’s all here, plus dozens of other types of handcrafted items. The shop is housed in an 1860s era log home that has been lovingly restored. If you’re in Door County during the high season, there’s also a weekly farmers market on Tuesdays that features a wide array of locally made crafts.
We’ve covered a lot of distance, browsing more than 20 shops in villages and towns throughout the peninsula, but really just a smattering of what exists here. As we wind back south, passing rows and rows of cherry trees, it’s clear there are always more unique small businesses to discover in Door County. They remain the lifeblood of the area, connecting generations, and bringing many of us back year after year after year.

Carlsville was named for five Karls who lived there in the 1800s.
Door Peninsula Winery’s 50 Years of New Wines, Ciders, and Mead
Blackberry Merlot. Sunset Splash. Blood Orange Buzz. Cherry Mimosa. Basically, that’s red wine, white wine, mead and cider, and a mere sampling of the huge selection of fruit- and grape-based wines and other drinks produced by Door Peninsula Winery. Over the span of 50 years, since 1974, the popular winery has grown from a two-person producer of two classic fruit wines — dry and sweet cherry wines, plus dry and sweet apple wines — into Wisconsin’s largest wine producer from Wisconsin-grown fruit. It’s an amazing accomplishment that has made the winery one of the most popular shopping destinations in Door County overall and Carlsville specifically. Located in what was formerly the two-room Carlsville Schoolhouse, the winery was purchased by the Pollman family from its original founders in 1984. The basic bones of the well-built building are still visible, adding a sturdy historic flavor to the business’s tasting room and retail operations. Simply going through the former school’s front door, it’s easy to picture its 60 students split between the left side (1st through 4th grades), and right side (5th through 8th grades). What every visitor notices is the depth of the ever-changing wine selections. Go up the stairs just past the central deli (cheese, fudge, olive oil, wine accessories, etc.) and you’re immediately in the vast wine store racks, featuring
dozens of fruit and grape varietals. Constant experimentation by the business’s short succession of professional vintners has led the company to its current delicious roster of 67 different wines, ciders and meads. Although Door Peninsula Winery has its own vineyard and orchard, they don’t begin to cover all the production needs, so fruit is also purchased from other orchards on the Peninsula. The winery tries to source Wisconsin-grown as much as possible, currently 80-85% of overall fruit usage. Some grape varieties –plus fruits like mango – are sourced from more temperate areas of the U.S. Other produce not available in Door County comes largely from various Wisconsin growers, including cranberries (for Cranberry Apple, Cranbernet, and Cranberry Mule) from the western part of the state. Like other successful area businesses, almost always being open (closed only on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day) is part of the business’s continued success. What’s the secret to the winery’s 50 years of growth and a powerfully positive brand? Simply, you can feel the fun throughout the business and in every bottle and glass of what is, after all, supposed to be a light, fun drink, just perfect for a Door County vacation... — John Nelson

Located at Corner of the Past Museum at Hwy 57 & Fieldcrest Rd., the Sister Bay Historical Society’s beautiful heritage property.
Al Johnson’s 75th Anniversary: Pancakes, Goats & Swedes
The place with goats on the roof (for 51 years now!) How did that come about? Al and Ingert Johnson simply realized Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Butik needed a new building so the business could continue to grow and evolve.
Largely at Ingert’s prodding during a visit to her hometown of Växjö, Sweden, the couple decided they wanted a Norwegian log structure. Referred to a traditional log builder in the mountains across the border, they called, set up a meeting and quickly placed an order for Norwegian carpenters and semi-trailers of logs to make their way across the ocean to Sister Bay. The new log building was erected around the existing restaurant — a former IGA Store built in the 1930s — during the following summer of 1972. Al was determined to not lose a single day of the short Door County season, and this allowed him to stay open during construction.
When the building and its green sod roof were in place, a friend named Dean Madden kept saying “You oughta put a goat on that roof.” They didn’t do so, but soon after, Al’s friend Wink Larson brought Al a joke birthday gift, a goat named Oscar.
Wink put Oscar on the roof, and metaphorically, he never came down — as he and his many goat brethren have been very popular ever since. Al’s quickly became known as “The place with goats on the roof”.
That’s what many of us love about this story. Nothing about Al’s growth plan was premeditated, tested, or modelled. Al and Ingert wanted to grow their business by emphasizing its Scandinavian heritage. Their hard work, people skills and openness to change led to goats on their roof. But as their son Lars Johnson has often said, “The goats are great, but we wouldn’t be in business if we didn’t have good food.” Of course, that’s the real message to this homespun, but true parable. Happy 75th anniversary, Al Johnson’s!
To celebrate its unusual longevity, despite the constant headwinds of operating in a rural community with heavy tourism visitation only during the five months of May-October, Al’s is planning a major event on its property on the June 22nd weekend of this year. Find more details at facebook.com/AlJohnsons and the company’s website, aljohnsons.com. — John Nelson

Washington Island is the oldest Icelandic community in the U.S.
The business center for the Southern Door area of the Door Peninsula is rich with a life that most visitors never experience. Agriculturally driven, but just as naturally beautiful as the county’s northern region, it offers a quiet peace, and access to outdoor adventure, while also providing a gateway to a unique, surprisingly unchanged Belgian heritage.
What looks like a simple country crossroads is actually also the home to a renowned potter (Juddville Contemporary Clay Studio), the Write On, Door County arts organization (mission: to inspire and engage writers and readers of all ages, and at all stages); and St. Paul Lutheran Church. Initial appearances can be deceiving in Door County, so go ahead, slow down and explore…
The well-known Rowleys Bay Resort sadly burned down in 2023, but the area still offers one of the most astounding water views in the county. Featuring easy land and water access to
Mink River Basin, a watershed and flowage with excellent fishing, it’s hard to overstate the beauty of a blue-andgreen estuary view that spills out from the verdant shoreline towards greater Lake Michigan.
This little fishing village sits on the Green Bay shoreline in Southern Door. Increase Claflin, the county’s first settler, built a log cabin here in 1835. Today it is known for walleye, bass, and perch fishing. Its annual festival, ‘Little Sturgeon Days’ has live music, a horseshoe tournament and parade. Go fishing! Located in the town of Gardner.
This surprising little place, tucked away in the heart of the county, is surrounded by farmland. There’s a winery that offers tastings and a shop with its own products, a restaurant with a model train that entertains kids and adults alike, a friendly pub, and a pizza place with outdoor dining. Go have fun! Crossroads of Hwy E and Hwy A.
N ORTHPORT
You go to Northport for one of two reasons: to catch one of the Washington Island ferries, or to see the famed “curvy road” that leads to Northport. Going to the Island is the start of a trip that brings you to the county’s only year-round island community, where you can explore 35 square miles and over 100 miles of roads. Still feeling stressed from your non-vacation life? Try some “Island Time”!

Fish boils are Door County’s only indigenous dish, brought to the Peninsula by Scandinavian immigrants.
Our Masterboiler slices fresh fish into chunks, then boils it with baby red potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn on the cob and sweet onions.
The fish boil kettle is brought to a boil over an open fire… when the fish is cooked to perfection, a small amount of kerosene is poured into the base of the fire. The result? A spectacular burst of flames and the famous boil-over that leaves the food ready to be immediately served at your table inside the restaurant.
Fish, potatoes, and onions served with fresh lemons, melted butter, coleslaw, corn bread and Door County cherry pie.

Finding Your Favorite Door County Sunset
What is the magic of the sunset that draws us to the water’s edge? With vibrant captivating colors we watch the prominent orange globe sink into the water, not wanting to see it go, but relieved when it’s gone. It’s the time that signifies the day has come to its end and the mystery of the night is still ahead. It is a shared moment with those standing with us, drinking in the awe, feeling its presence, making us one with strangers and friends. Nothing is said. It doesn’t need to be. Thoughts of the day, the beach, the shops, the food, are encapsulated into this moment, reinvigorating persistent hope.

How many art and design careers were ultimately launched by the famed Peninsula School of Art, you may wonder? One such artist is Russ Zabler, who was taking PenArt photography classes back in the late 1960s and went on to take his rst Metal Arts class in 1972. e year 2024 marks Russ’s 52nd year creating unique jewelry designs.
“Jewelry had lit a re in me,” Russ said recently. First, he worked at a trade shop doing jewelry repair and custom work on Jeweler’s Row in downtown Chicago at 5 N. Wabash. He subsequently took over the business and ran it for seven and a half years, all while pursuing his own work in summer art shows. In 1983, Russ bought his current Ephraim shop and remade it into Zabler Design Jewelers. A year later, he also acquired his store in the Chicago area, in Clarendon Hills, Illinois.
As always, the two stores o er countless alternatives for engagement rings, from antique diamond rings to peach-pink sapphire to morganite and rose gold combinations. Russ simply has an original and inventive way to inspire clients with a curated selection.
Today, Russ Zabler’s motivation remains the same as when he started out in the business. “Honestly, I just love the connections I get to make with individuals, and being able to work with beautifully colored gems and rare objects.”

Imposing Spirit of Norbert Blei’s “Coop”
Norbert Blei was one of Door County’s best-known writers of non-fiction, fiction, poetry, and journalism. For almost 45 years, he wrote in his chicken-coop-turned-writingstudio at his home in Ellison Bay. He passed away in 2013, just as Write On, Door County was getting started. The Blei family donated the Coop to Write On with the understanding that it would be used by other writers in the spirit Norb intended. In August of 2015, the Coop was moved to Write On’s rural property in Juddville. The Coop can now be viewed along the Norbert Blei Loop of the Writer’s Walk, a winding 1.5-mile hiking path through Write On’s 59-acre campus of verdant woods lined with birches and wildflowers and featuring carved cedar benches.
I am privileged to say I spent time in Norbert Blei’s Coop with the writer himself, discussing my own writing and first book (which Norb published), or anything else that might be on his mind. When I go into the Coop today, I can still hear Norb’s voice, his laugh, see his decades-old collection of magazines, books, and clip -
pings. The Coop has its own spirit, the spirit of the writer at work.
I first met Norbert Blei in his book Meditations On A Small Lake. I met him in person in 1996 as a student in his writing workshop at The Clearing in Ellison Bay. He quickly became a friend and mentor. We had a mutual respect that led to me teaching with him at The Clearing and continuing that class after his death.
But why Write On? What is that Blei spirit? Norbert Blei’s Coop represents more than his Door County trilogy of books: Door Way, Door Steps, and Door to Door.
The Coop represents an impassioned commitment to the writing life. Write On’s board president Myles Dannhausen, Jr. explained it well in “A Bridge in Progress,” written for the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters (Fall, 2014):
“ Writing what he truly wanted to write was the theme of Blei’s life. And in his pursuit of writing — and of becoming what he believed a writer should be, from his mind to his habits to his clothes — he would (often stubbornly)
sacrifice income, bylines, even relationships to pursue his vision of the writer in its truest form.”
Norb was, like any true writer, as well-read a person as you could meet. The walls of his home were lined with bookshelves, literally thousands of books, all read and remembered by Norb. Have a conversation with him one day and the next he’d be mailing you quotations from a book or magazine clippings to explain or emphasize a point. This was also his teaching style. As Norb’s partner Jude Genereaux has said, “He encouraged you to find your own voice and path. His passion was writing, but his genius was teaching.”
Writer, reader, teacher. This was Norbert Blei. The Coop holds that spirit and spreads that energy throughout and within everything we do at Write On.
Norb describes the spirit of the Coop in Door to Door in the chapter titled “The Coop:”
“ I i nhabit the earth now, the space of chickens, eye-level with the trunks of trees, my feet joined to the roots of ferns and flowering plants. I share the composure of stones. The low shadows lengthening toward me. The still-life beyond glass.”
This is a love affair with place. I am beside myself with poems.
— Al DeGenova | poet, and Executive Director | Write On, Door County
EDITOR’S NOTE: Working in a converted chicken coop north of Ellison Bay, for 40+ years writer Norbert Blei (8/23/1935 – 4/23/2013) chronicled Door County through the lives of its inhabitants. A revised edition of DOOR WAY: The People in the Landscape, the first book in Blei’s “Door Series,” was published August 2010 and is available at Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Butik in Sister Bay. If you are a first-time visitor and have come to wonder about the true nature of the Door Peninsula, be sure to take a deeper dive into Norbert Blei’s writing. Norbert Blei’s books are also available for sale at Write On, Door County in Juddville.

Fern Hill
Now as I was young and easy under the apple boughs
About the lilting house and happy as the grass was green, The night above the dingle starry, Time let me hail and climb
Golden in the heydays of his eyes, And honoured among wagons I was prince of the apple towns And once below a time I lordly had the trees and leaves
Trail with daisies and barley
Down the rivers of the windfall light.
And as I was green and carefree, famous among the barns
About the happy yard and singing as the farm was home,
In the sun that is young once only, Time let me play and be Golden in the mercy of his means, And green and golden I was huntsman and herdsman, the calves
Sang to my horn, the foxes on the hills barked clear and cold, And the sabbath rang slowly In the pebbles of the holy streams.
Nothing I cared, in the lamb white days, that time would take me
Up to the swallow thronged loft by the shadow of my hand, In the moon that is always rising, Nor that riding to sleep I should hear him fly with the high fields And wake to the farm forever fled from the childless land.
Oh as I was young and easy in the mercy of his means, Time held me green and dying
Though I sang in my chains like the sea.

Hiking at The Ridges Sanctuary
The Ridges Sanctuary was established in 1937 after Albert Fuller, then Curator of Botany at the Milwaukee Public Museum, began spending a significant amount of time surveying the landscape, an area he celebrated as “a botanist’s paradise.” Fuller spearheaded a grassroots movement to protect the incredibly diverse and ecologically significant ridges and swales and establish The Ridges Sanctuary as Wisconsin’s first land trust. The Ridges now protects over 1,600 acres featuring 15 discrete plant communities, 475 inventoried vascular plants, a boreal forest glacial relict, and 29 of Wisconsin’s 49 native orchids. The organization’s rich 87-year history, said Executive Director Katie Krouse, speaks of passion, strength and a desire to ensure that this rich landscape is protected for future generations.
Throughout the Sanctuary, you’ll experience 32 ridges and swales formed over 1,100 years. Ridges are old shorelines created by Lake Michigan. Swales are the wetlands in between each ridge. They host an incredible diversity of plants, birds, insects, and habitats.
Self-guided and naturalist-guided hikes are available for those who want to explore at their own pace, or join a group. Naturalistguided hikes are perhaps the best way to experience the Sanctuary. These relaxed walks are approximately two hours and provide an opportunity to learn about the features of the Sanctuary, the property’s history, the Baileys Harbor Range Lights, and the diverse flora of this unique natural area. Guided hikes are suitable for all ages and are available at each of the main trail systems – The Sanctuary trails, Appel’s Bluff and Logan Creek. The trails are wellmarked, easy to follow. Visit RidgesSanctuary.org for more info.

Northern Sky Theater: Two Great Venues
The quintessential Door County experience? Take your pick from two unparalleled Northern Sky venues: an amphitheater of towering cedars under the stars in Peninsula State Park, or the state-of-the-art Gould Theater, set on 40 wooded acres in Fish Creek. You’ll see the original musicals that led the Chicago Tribune to call Northern Sky “one of the most exceptional professional troupes in the country.” In 2024, Northern Sky will present three summer shows outdoors in the Park: The Fisherman’s Daughter’s, a world premiere set in 1908 Fish Creek, Belgians in Heaven, a fan favorite, returns for its 30th anniversary, and Hell’s Belgians, yet another world premiere and the long-awaited prequel to Belgians in Heaven. Indoors this summer at the Gould Theater, the company will present Girls on Sand, a world premiere brought to you by the creators of Sunflowered and inspired by the Alley/Kaplan mega-hit Guys on Ice. This fall, the Gould will premiere Reality Trip, a contemporary musical about how technology both helps and hinders us. The fall season will close out at the Gould with And If Elected, Northern Sky’s fan favorite election year tradition.

With an unwavering commitment to artistic excellence, the dedicated ensemble of artists has been enchanting audiences for 89 seasons, seamlessly blending captivating live performances with the surrounding natural beauty.

Neil Simon uses his wit and humor to delve into family, and the laughs continue into July with a homage to 1930s screwball comedies. August brings rock ‘n’ roll pioneers of the 1950s to Door County audiences, followed by an unforgettable romance on the 1914 Canadian prairies. In autumn, Agatha Christie’s psychological thriller reminds us that not everyone is who they seem. Performances run Tuesday through Sunday, with no shows on Mondays. Rogue Theater
Rogue Theater – Part of the Theater Fabric of DC
A DC hidden treasure celebrating its 12th season — now performing at the DC Arts Center in Sturgeon Bay.
The season begins with “ On Golden Pond ”, the love story of Ethel and Norman Thayer, who return to their summer home of forty-eight years. Their daughter, her fiancé and his teenage son visit. The summer heats up with the dramatic comedy Heros by Tom Stoppard and Gerald Sibleyras. Set in August 1959 at a French retirement home for military men, where Philippe and Henri hatch a plan to escape. Summer wraps up with Clue: On Stage , a hilarious farce-meets murder mystery based on the iconic 1985 Paramount movie and classic board game. Fall brings suspense and drama with Jeffrey Hatcher’s adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde , a shocking version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale of depravity, lust, love and horror. The year ends with Halleluiah Girls , by Wooten, Jones, and Hope. This hilarious comedy reminds us of the importance of good friends, and of not taking life so seriously that we forget to laugh and love. We have choices. We also have to get things done. Why do some of us put things off? Do difficult tasks bring on deprivation and distress when we’d rather feel a spiritual state of energy and connection? Vacation is the perfect time to assess what brings you joy and how sharing makes it meaningful.
Procrastination is voluntarily postponing something despite knowing there will be negative consequences. However, prioritizing other activities is not necessarily procrastination. Be clear with yourself why you are choosing one task over another. Vacuuming to avoid tax prep is procrastination.
Which type of procrastinator are you? An active one delays a task to feel motivated by pressure, like how being underwater makes you fight to reach the surface. A passive procrastinator delays a task because they have trouble choosing and acting on it, according to Kendra Cherry in the article What is Procrastination?
Procrastination is a behavior, not a personality. “We’re hardwired to avoid anything painful,” behavioral scientist Fuschia Sirois said in Science News.
Consider the reason you’re procrastinating. Is it motivation, insecurity, perfectionism, confusion, fear of being judged, or boredom? Or is it biological factors like lack of sleep, drugs, alcohol, brain injury, or mental health issues making it difficult to concen -
trate, asks Dr. Daniel Amen. Brain health can affect energy, memory, creativity, decision making, and longevity.
After assessing the reasons, consider how you feel. Is there guilt, shame, or anxiety? Delaying is often more painful than doing the work, says James Clear in the article Procrastination: A Scientific Guide on How to Stop Procrastinating. “As soon as you cross the ‘Action Line,’ (the starting point),” writes Clear, “the pain begins to subside.” Look for harmony between thoughts and feelings. Prioritize how you feel.
Finding pleasure helps us get through the pain, says Dr. Fred Bryant, co-author of Savoring: A New Model of Positive Experience. “By attending to the pleasure of discovering the little things, looking forward to those joys, and sharing the process with others, we can savor the positive moments.”
If we look at it from a binary view, we miss the joy in between. Are we motivated or procrastinating, making progress or not, perfect or failure? In the book Anatomy of a Breakthrough, author Adam Alter suggests that we “think on a continuum with bursts of energy and pulling back to reflect.”
Progress is not a linear path, according to Adam Grant, author of Hidden Potential. “Feeling stuck could be the impetus before the leap. It’s not about performance, it’s about progress. We want to be open to new thoughts and fresh perspectives.”
Is there a benefit to procrastination? “There is a sweet spot in the procrastination continuum that is creative,” Grant said. “Not going with the first thought, or rushing to finish, leaves room for creativity, a chance to incubate and refashion ideas.”
The brilliant part of brain plasticity is that the more you practice, the more pathways are built, effecting change. Here’s what to do: the night before you embark on a tough project, write down the first very small step. If it’s taxes, “gather bank and credit card statements” is all you need. Keep it easy. Then reward yourself.
Repeat with step two.
Do the hardest thing first, when energy is highest. Keep expectations low to keep from falling short. Visualize the end goal with a smile on your face. Reward yourself for little steps with things you enjoy. Perhaps have a visual cue like moving marbles from one dish to another to signify progress.
Some tips from experts: ‘Embrace the suck,’ because getting started is going to hurt. Have a designated place to work with good lighting. Turn lights on before starting and off when done. Remove distractions and turn off notifications. Never check your email/ texts/social media before noon. Move your body to get blood flowing.
Give up multitasking. Getting distracted by one email leads to another and eventually it takes 25 minutes to get back to the original task, says Dr. Gloria Mark, author of Attention Span. “That is wasting time and mental focus. Have concrete goals then take mind-clearing time.”
“Our focus lasts 30-90 minutes,” Dr. Andrew Huberman, professor at Stanford in neurobiology, said. Once you’re aware of your ‘focus time’ you can better organize. “When your time is up,” says Huberman, “take 10-30 minutes of deliberate decompression time, doing things that are mindless.” Use the time to vacuum, fold laundry, take a walk, or nap.
Even while following these steps, we can still get stuck in the middle of a project, i.e. the plateau effect, said Adam Alter. “Things happen quickly in the beginning, slow in the middle, and gather speed when the end is in sight. Create artificial deadlines throughout the project so there are external markers to shrink the middle.” For those taxes, move the marble each time you complete a month’s reconciling.
Just like being on vacation, approaching things with curiosity, the why, the fun, shows us the means to connect to a spiritual state of delight and purpose, making the doing worthwhile. — Marise Redmann

Trying to Find Balance in Sustainable Tourism
The magical draw to Door County goes as far back as the 1800s, when logging, shipbuilding, transport, and farming brought the first waves of pioneers to the Peninsula. Then, in the early 1900s, modern tourism began. Now, over a century later, residents often discuss what the right balance is between locals and visitors.
Escaping the city heat, traffic, and other forces, visitors are seeking many of the same things as 100 years ago: cool breezes, cherry orchards, the beauty of nature. Over 50 years ago, a March 1969 National Geographic article called Door County the “Cape Cod of the Midwest” and put the area on the map. Looking back, some residents wonder if that was necessarily a good thing — does the Peninsula’s allure strip something valuable from its yearround residents?
Retired Gibraltar Schools teacher Nancy Akerly reminisced about visiting a family cherry farm as a child, then moving here to teach in the 1970s. She now worries that the quaint pastoral villages are slowly becoming a version of a Chicago suburb. “Overbuilding and construction that doesn’t fit in with the rest of our community is unsightly,” Nancy said. “Stronger county zoning would protect that from happening.”
A Sister Bay resident, she said summer fun is compromised with late night noise and light pollution. “I stay home more, avoid the crowds, and keep my windows closed most summer evenings because of the noise of loudspeakers from restaurants. Forget quiet evenings star watching in the back yard.” However, she notes that the population increase has brought better medical care, plus other lifestyle enhancements through the YMCA and the Door Community Auditorium. “I love the wealth of wonderful people who move here, who volunteer at places like The Clearing, The Ridges, and the parks, who teach classes, give talks, share their expertise, and broaden our horizons in so many ways.” she said. Frank Candioto remembers visiting his family’s farm since he was a boy, later bringing his wife, Rochelle and their friends for over 55 years. “It was so quaint, compared to Chicago,” Rochelle said. “It’s less of a farming community and more of a tourist destination now,” Frank said. The couple agreed that, for them, the festivals are crowded, which prompts them to visit midweek instead. Although the crowds and parking are a deterrent, they also praised the level of the restaurants and the arts, noting that Northern Sky Theater, wineries, tours, and historic museums didn’t always exist. Friendly local hospitality is part of their delight in visiting, they said. Without tourism, our community would not thrive, but worries about shrinking open spaces and changes in the local lifestyle is concerning for many. The impact of increased population numbers has actually been a longstanding catalyst for change.
In the early 1900s, the tourism flood sparked the creation of Peninsula State Park. The 1980s was the start of the Door County Land Trust, whose mission is to help protect land and shorelines. More recently, the pandemic influx sparked the Community Investment Program, which uses visitor room tax dollars to help fund local infrastructure projects.
“We helped fund 24 different community projects in the first year,” said Jon Jarosh, Chief Communications Officer for Destination Door County. “These were projects like public trails, playground equipment, land acquisition, historical restoration, park restroom facilities and pavilions, public transportation, mountain bike trails, and an accessible interpretive park about the Niagara Escarpment.”
Jarosh, who also remembers visiting relatives in the county as a child, became a resident in 1998, saying he especially loved the big water and outdoor recreation. “Tourism capacity is a multifaceted topic that involves the alignment of environmental sustainability, the visitor experience, and community benefits,” he said. “I feel some important things are happening in Door County right now, and we have more and more residents realizing how important it is to have meaningful conversations about Door County’s future,” Jon said.
“I love living here,” Nancy Akerly said. “There are many reasons to work for the future of Door County. I hope we can find that balance, retaining the beauty, peace, and serenity of our county, but still grow and change to take advantage of all the benefits of the 21st century.” — Marise Redmann
