e shipped the second of four 4,500 ton, 95 million liter per day Desalination Evaporators for the Yanbu 3 project in June, secured an additional order from the Port of Danang for a Rubber Tired Gantry Crane and World Cup fever is in high gear. In addition, the fourth annual Family Day program is set to launch as is the sixth annual CSR Medical Service that is a cooperative effort by Doosan, Doosan Vina and Chung Ang University (CAU) Medical Center of Korea. The above evaporator shipment wasn’t without stress and controversy. As we were making final preparations to ship the evaporator and receive the specialized SPMT’s or Self Propelled Mobile Transfers that are needed to transfer the massive evaporator within the complex, we were told that we had to pay import duty of $2.2 million on the SPMT’s. Customs regulations allow for and exempt duty for the temporary import of equipment that is in Vietnam for a short-term project, but the SPMT’s were not allowed to be placed in this category. The SPMT’s are only in Vietnam for about a week and leave with the ship and evaporator so it can be unloaded on arrival in the Middle East. The negotiations were intense and shuttle diplomacy between Quang Ngai and Hanoi to reach an agreement was ongoing and just before the deadline senior Vietnamese leaders in Quang Ngai and Hanoi met with Doosan and a deal was struck to resolve the issue in Doosan’s favor. After it was completed Hang Ha Ryu CEO released a statement that said, “We’ve always had a good relationship with the government and this is another example of how far Vietnam goes to support FDI companies.” Family Day is a program where families of employees are treated to a day at the company so they can see exactly where and under what conditions their loved one works. It has been going on for four years and a total of 1,855 family members will have toured the company at the completion of this latest cycle. And finally the Doosan/CAU medical service has grown each year and this; its sixth year is no exception. It began on July 7th with the arrival of a team of 14 doctors, support staff, medicines and medical equipment from Korea. It is estimated that during the weeklong event around 2,500 local people will receive free medical care. In total the CSR partnership between Doosan and CAU has benefitted well over 15,000 local people. The medical service represents an investment in the health of the local community of well over $1.5 million and involves hundreds of volunteers who work tirelessly to help the Korean doctors and manage the program.

Doosan Trains Vietnamese Na
P
hase II of Doosan’s support for the Vietnamese National Archery Team began when Doosan took eleven members of Vietnam’s National Archery team to Korea for ten days of training. The details of Doosan’s six year comDieu Linh mitment of support for Vietnam’s National Archery program were spelled out in an MOU signed last November between Doosan, Doosan Vina and Vietnam’s General Department of Sport. In the MOU Doosan commits to provide co-operation, training, travel to each other’s country for development as well as donations of equipment. Last November as part of the MOU proceedings Doosan brought a medal holding archery team from Korea to Hanoi to work with their Vietnamese counterparts on archery skills and demonstrate the high tech bows that were supplied by the company and presented by the Korean team to their Vietnamese counterparts. In this, the second phase, Doosan took eight Vietnam archers and three coaches to its headquarters in Chang Won, South Korea to conduct a high tech training course for the Vietnamese from May 12th to 22nd. This is the first overseas training session for the Vietnamese under the program. The goal of the training exercises was to improve the archery skills of the
Vietnamese team and give them additional exposure to global archery talent and the level of competitors they will face in matches worldwide. Vietnamese archer Nguyen Thi Kim Anh said, “This

ational Archery Team in Korea kind of experience is invaluable because it helps us understand the competition and prepares us for the intensity that is present at the top levels of the sport. It also helps us know what to expect and overcome match day nervousness; overseas’ training like this gives us experience that just can’t be had any other way, it makes it easier to relax and focus on our performance rather than thinking about the talent that we are going to be up against when we compete in an international match.” One of the Korean trainers from Doosan said, “The Vietnamese are very good and anxious to learn, so I am sure we can raise their skill sets quite a bit during this training. Over the ten days we’ll be focusing on improving technical skills and techniques to help the archers with the basics of the sport as well as offering some advanced training that will give them the confidence to compete with archers from all over the world.” Another feature of the Vietnamese archers’ time in Korea will be to witness the 48th Korean national men and women archery congress that will take place in the Kim Soo-Nyung Archery Center in Cheong Ju, South Korea. “I know that our archers are excited to have this opportunity and they are looking forward to learning from and practicing with the Korean trainers and benefitting from their experience and knowl-

edge,” said Dinh Chi Dung, Chief Coach of the Vietnam Archery Team. The Korean Doosan Archery Team was established July 1st 1994. The team has six members and is Korea’s Best Archery Team. Some of the outstanding achievements of the team are: a Silver Medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, World Champions, winning two Gold Medals at the Korea archery competition (1997), Gold Medal for men (2008), First prize in national competitions, Third prize for mixed male/female teams (2009) and many more. This starts at the very conception of the project with the gathering of specifications and the development of a quotation. This involves the terms of contract, the projected profit and negotiations with the customer. Another crucial function is making sure that the details of the financial arrangements are spelled out and will be handled in a manner acceptable to all parties.
The Manufacturing Planning Section is responsible for setting-up the production plan and managing all aspects of the process to coordinate and ensure that the workload and human resources for the production of the project are in sync.
