Always be on the Safe Side
A
s a decade long chapter at Doosan draws to a close and I prepare to pass the torch to my team, I looked back at the past ten years and can see that it was indeed a wild and incredible ride! It was laced with opportunities, challenges and many outstanding people; I can truly say that I’ve been fortunate. My time with Doosan has taught me a lot; I’ve learned volumes about: Communications, Asia, Vietnam and the Vietnamese people, Korea, Koreans and Korean companies. And I’ve been blessed with hundreds of new friends that hail from the four corners of the earth. While working at Doosan the professional and personal growth I’ve experienced in marketing, corporate communications, infrastructure, CSR and many other areas has been tremendous and I want to say thank you for creating an environment and providing the resources that made this not only possible but interesting. Thanks also for opening doors that gave me the chance to be successful, learn, grow and have an opportunity to meet some pretty amazing people in both the public and private sectors. And if in the future, you just happen to find that you need a power plant, a cargo container crane or a desalination plant, give me a bell or find me on FB, LinkedIn, twitter…and I’ll see if I can hook you up with the proper people. Stay safe and look after one another! Cheers Dale Gerstenslager

UPDATE PROJECT
Construction begins on Nghi Son 2
T
he $2.79 billion Build Operate Transfer power plant known as Nghi Son 2 officially began construction when Doosan Vina drove the first pile in Vietnam’s Thanh Hoa Province on August 27th 2018. Nghi Son 2 (NS2) is a 1,330 MW thermal power plant being built by Doosan that is scheduled for completion in July of 2022. NS2PC is a Vietnamese company formed by the Marubeni Corporation of Japan and the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) of Korea to invest in and operate the BOT NS2 project. To launch the project NS2PC made an initial payment of $170 million to Doosan on the 24th of June 2018. NS2 is being built in Vietnam’s Thanh Hoa Province about 200 km southeast of Hanoi by Doosan and will produce the power needed to continue fueling Vietnam’s remarkable economic growth and development. For perspective NS-2 will generate enough
electricity to power an additional 6.8 million four person households in Vietnam and will improve living standards and economic opportunity across the country. The construction of the NS2 power plant will feature two separate high tech, high efficiency 665 MW supercritical boilers, high efficiency turbines and generating units. The two units will be constructed side by side, but be independent to allow for greater flexibility and efficiency. Since 2012, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has won contracts worth more than US$6 billion to build Mong Duong 2, Song Hau 1 and Vinh Tan 4 thermal power projects in Vietnam. Doosan Heavy Industries Vietnam employs thousands of Vietnamese workers and has played an important role in the development of the country’s engineering sector and its economic growth.

SAFETY
Safety is at the Heart of Happiness
S
afety is a top priority at Doosan Heavy Industries Vietnam and at all of Doosan’s worldwide operations. Here at Doosan Vina our CEO, Park Hong Ook welcomed in the New Year on 3rd January 2018 with an address that had three primary focuses for the year, Quality, Communication and Safety. At the conclusion of the talk no one was in the least bit confused that Park felt safety is one area that cannot be compromised under any circumstances! To emphasis and close his speech, Park challenged all employees to make sure that safety was a personal commitment and top-of-mind at all times. And after ten months of operation the record speaks for itself; to date we have had no serious accidents and only two minor accidents. The EHS team which is an acronym for: Environmental, Health & Safety, is responsible for these three extremely important factors at Doosan Vina (DV) and as the statistic above demonstrates the 74 men and women of EHS take their work very seriously. EHS has responsibility for DV’s nearly 2,000 employees and the 100 plus hectare site in the Dung Quat Economic Zone of Central Vietnam’s Quang Ngai Province. In 2018 the EHS Team has initiated many safety programs. Some of the well-known programs were: The 30-Day Zero Accident Campaign; Safety First and Safety Patrols. In addition to preventive measure like the above, EHS also employs a proactive educational approach to safety by organ-
izing classes for both employees and subcontractors. With 24/7 responsibilities EHS is a round the clock operation that works with the individual shops to develop safety programs that are tailored to the specific needs of a particular area or process. Some examples of these in 2018 have been the: “No Accident” campaign of the Boiler shop, “Safety for You and Me” of the Water shop and The “60 Day Safe Working Environment” of the Production Support Team. Dang Van Khanh, Manager of EHS at the Boiler shop spoke to Doosan Vina News about safety issues and said, “The EHS team at Boiler shop continuously looks at the current safety situation to determine what is the most important thing right now, from there we undertake a regularly monitoring of the situation and if we detect any danger or unsafe activities they are dealt with immediately.” “Since launching a monitoring program of PST’s eight subcontractors three months ago the safety of the subcontractors has been greatly improved; everyone is more responsible and compliant,” said Nguyen Dinh Dung, EHS Manager at PST. To reinforce DV’s commitment to safety: DVRadio, a daily newscast of events at the company, DVTV, a twice a week video

companywide event and ones that are held by individual Shops, Divisions or Team. Employees were paid for the day and the company provided the budget, buses and other support
ding Workshops including tents, sound systems or manpower to assist at the individual events. Kicking off the 2018 OMF workshops was the MHS Shop, the Financial Division and the Project Management Team. They had good programs that generated a great deal of cooperation and bonding among the 464 participants. In all the 2018 OMF had 1,705 participants and an overall budget of over VND one bil-
lion. The common theme and underlying goal of both the recent and past OMF’s is to spend time together in a non-work environment. This will in turn allow employees to bond, cooperate and better understand one another so that when the inevitable challenges that develop in any work environment occurs, they can draw from their experiences together and understand that we are all working towards a common objective.

Third “Happy House” Completed
T
he Happy House program grew out of a simple Sport Day that was organized by Doosan Vina and Vietcombank. The original goal was to meet and compete in a variety of sports and games so employees and My Hanh managers could get to know each other, have some fun and develop ties that would strengthen business opportunities. From the original two the group evolved and now has five businesses represented and has become known as “The Dream Team.” They meet on a regular basis for team building events as-well-as community based CSR activities. In addition to the original members, (Doosan Vina and Vietcombank of Quang Ngai)
Binh Son Refinery, PetroVietNam Technical Services Corporation and Mai Linh have now joined and support the group’s efforts. As the group grew from two companies to five, so did their ambitions and the idea of helping people in the community sprang forth and “Happy House” was born. Happy House aims to help the elderly or needy in the community that are living in desperate conditions and in need of assistance to renovate or rebuild their homes. To complete this third Happy House, 16 members of the five companies joined hands to upgrade and repair the home of Dinh Thi Ngoc Ngang. They then went to Dinh’s home on 18 June 2018 intent on improving life for one of the communities most vulnerable families. The repairs included an upgrade to: the floors, the electrical and water systems, reinforcement of the walls, fixing the roof and painting the entire house. And to be sure Dinh and her family could fully enjoy their new “Happy House” the Dream Team also presented them with a washing machine, new wardrobes, blankets and several other household items.
