FROM THE EDITOR So here we are another year older and wiser. It does not seem like two years have pasted since I first thought about starting up the magazine. The success of FEMINARUM comes down to the hard work and dedication from the team and also from the thousands of readers all across the world. So many people have been asking me what is the secret to running a magazine? I wish I knew but I suppose for me, our success comes down to the fact that we are so open to accepting everyone who wants to write for the magazine. We don’t have any agenda and write articles on what we feel passionately about. The team are fantastic and have never failed to deliver the high level of articles that our readers have come to accept from this magazine. So we felt that it would be great to have this special issue filled with a wide variety of subject that we feel very strongly about and that people have contributed to.
Founder and Editor
As you have seen on the media, everyone is talking about the refugee crisis but what is really behind this mass exodus of a nation? I will be doing an article all about this and showing you the various groups whom you can contact if you want to help.

What can we do?? Many of us have no idea what is really at the heart of the mass exodus of the people of Syria. What has driven the masses to leave their homes and make a very long and dangerous journey to Germany and other European countries? We have been seeing the pictures on the media and yet nobody is really talking about the root problem in Syria itself. The conflict is now more than just a battle between those for or against President Assad. The war in Syria is political with the people of this nation caught in the cross fire of this ever spiralling cause of events.
!
So the migration of the Syrian nation is a long time coming. In 2011 pro democracy protests broke out against President Assad. The event that caused this was the arrest and torture of teenagers. Their crime?? It was for painting revolutionary slogans on walls. After this the people went to the streets in protest and this caused a civil unrest in Syria. By June 2013, the UN said 90,000 people had been killed in the conflict. However, by August 2014 that figure had more than doubled to 191,000 - and continued to climb to 220,000 by March 2015, according to activists and the UN. (From the BBC news website)
!
A UN commission of inquiry, investigating alleged human rights violations since March 2011, has evidence that those on both sides of the conflict have committed war crimes - including murder, torture, rape and enforced disappearances. Government and rebel forces have also been accused by investigators of using civilian suffering, such as blocking access to food, water and health services, as a method war. (From the BBC News website)
!
Is it any wonder that this nation is now migrating? Parents are seeking a better life for their families. A place for people to be safe and not live in constant fear. The British nation and its people have shown the most amazing spirit not seen since the Second World War. The pictures of little Alyan's body washed up on the shore emotionally tore at the nations hearts.! 4•
! .Many
of us are parents and it hit a raw nerve. The world felt compelled to reach out and help. Germany opened it doors and has now given a lost nation a new sense of hope.
!
I once read that the worst thing anyone can do in a crisis is nothing. So with this in mind, I sorted out clothes that I did not wear and took them to my local
charity shop. They welcomed my donation of clothing. Even such a small act can make a difference to someones life.
Now we are seeing the fallout of the painful legacy left behind from the countless wars in Syria and other countries.
The next generation should understand that humanitarianism is not something that should be seen as lame or unfashionable. It should be something that we all strive to achieve.
Helen Wright, Founder and Editor.

Pollyanna Hale Celebrations all round. Dear Readers,
!
Happy Birthday Feminarum! Only a year younger than my Bella, who will have just turned three when this is published. Wow how times flies these days. Two years ago I was about to launch www.thefitmumformula.com and my ex-business partner and I spent a week on about four hours sleep a night and lots of coffee getting it finished. Looking back I’m not sure why we put so much pressure on ourselves, but if nothing else I quickly learnt how to keep focused and engage my brain even on little sleep! That year I also published my book, ‘Eat Drink and Be Slim’, just in time for the New Year’s diet brigade. One year on and I took a leap of faith in myself by buying out my business partner and taking on The Fit Mum Formula alone. I got my Personal Training qualification (though I had sufficient knowledge of exercise physiology for insurance reasons I needed the paperwork to prove it). Safe to say I spent a lot of money on babysitters whilst studying, justifying it partly as ‘encouraging young people to be enterprising’. The colour version of
‘Eat Drink and Be Slim’ was published that Summer too. The past year has been spent reworking every aspect of The Fit Mum Formula, adding new modules, creating freebies for both the public and my members, and as a family we ate mostly recipes from a forthcoming book comprising healthy meals that the whole family will love but are still optimised for people wanting to burn fat. Two years after both Feminarum Magazine and www.thefitmumformula.com were launched, my new BodyBack programme is live along with the new website, Feminarum is winning awards all over the place, and these days I don’t even need the coffee to do it all! Cause for celebrations all round!
!
P.s I’d love some feedback on the relaunched www.thefitmumformula.com, I’d really appreciate it if you could please take time to visit it and email me what you think, after all I created it to help women like you!

Book Review by Shahna Thwaites Our resident bookworm reviews a new title from her favourite author.. I am down in beautiful picturesque Cornwall for two weeks and started this book at the beginning of the break. Now, as busy as I have been down here, even though you are supposed to be relaxing whilst on holiday(!), I am still managing to get a a small bit of reading in at some-point during the hectic days and am about 3/4 of the way through this book now. Is seeming to be slightly better than her last one, am happy to say as I love 8•
this author. Certainly is Chick-Lit but then that's what you want and need when relaxing on the beach isn't it? The main character, Jessie, has just found out that her real Dad, whom she had no idea even existed, is top mega-star Johnny Jefferson. The whole book is about her accepting the realisation of what it is like to have fulltime publicity around you all of the time. Certainly only book for 'girly-girls' but also
amusing at times depending on your sense of humour and also what mood you may be in at the time. Read or scan it over and see what you think? If you do read it I hope you enjoy. If any of our readers have a book that they want me to read or one that they have read and really like, then please send in your reviews via the contact page on the magazine website:

Tracey Jones and her cakes Tracey will be writing and cooking recipes for us in the magazine going forward. We welcome her as a new member of our team. She has a real passion for cooking and although she is a busy working mum and wife, she is still finding time to write for us. We all know how important it is that children learn the basic skills of cooking. It does not need to be fancy or complicated, just fun and good for them. You will be surprised how many adults have no idea how to cook. These skills have been lost as people find themselves working more and more to support their families in the 21st Century. So in this magazine and with the help of the wonderful Tracey Jones, we are hoping to change this. We all love cakes from Victoria sponges to cream eclairs. So it seemed only natural to start with all the sweet delights that are so easy to cook once you know how. If you have anything that you want Tracey to cook, then please contact us via social media or on the website: www.feminarummagazine.co.uk

Madeleines are very small sponge cakes with a distinctive shell-like shape acquired from being baked in pans with shell-shaped depressions. They are very common in France and some sources, including the New Oxford American Dictionary, say Madeleines may have been named for a 19th-century pastry cook, Madeleine Paulmier, but other sources have it that Madeleine Paulmier was a cook in the 18th century for Stanisław Leszczyński, whose son-in-law, Louis XV of France, named them for her. Madeleines were chosen to represent France in the Café Europe initiative of the Austrian presidency of the European Union, on Europe Day 2006. Well that’s the history out of the way and next time you make them for your family or friends you can impress them. I wanted to start with one small point I am trying to make things that are cost effective , fun, easy and will very rarely need specialist equipment but this case you will need a Madeleine tin as that’s how they achieve their distinctive shape. I got mine for just £9.98 for one that does 9 at a time but having looked around I should have spent a bit more and got one for 12 Madeleines, but hey that’s one Christmas present that will be on my list – thanks Pete! I have also been a bit cheeky I added a chocolate to one end in my first batch but in the interests of sticking to the idea and original French recipe I just dusted them with icing sugar. I used dark cooking chocolate for my first batch, however, next time, I am going to experiment and use ordinary chocolate. I think you can also experiment with flavours. The recipe below uses lemon zest, but hey why not use orange zest or even almond extract to be different. Be good to get some feedback from you on the different things you try and maybe I could try to use them on my guinea pig (Pete!). Ingredients • 2 medium eggs • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest • 125g icing sugar • 100g plain flour • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder • 125g butter, melted and cooled • A little icing sugar to dust • Chocolate for dipping (if you like)
!
Method 1. Preheat the oven to 190 C / Gas mark 5. Grease and flour your Madeleine pan (I didn’t flour my pan due to it being silicone). 2. In a medium sized bowl beat eggs, vanilla and lemon zest with an electric mixer on high speed for about 5 minutes. Gradually beat in the icing sugar and mix for 5 to 7 minutes or until thick and satiny. 3. Sift together the flour and baking powder. Gradually add the flour mixture over the egg mixture, gently fold in. Gradually fold in the remaining flour. Then fold in the melted and cooled butter. Spoon batter into the prepared moulds, filling 3/4 full. 4. Bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until the edges are golden and the tops spring back. Cool in moulds on a rack for 1 minute. Loosen with a knife. Invert onto a rack and cool. Sift icing sugar over the tops or melt plain chocolate and dip the tips in the chocolate. Store in an airtight container. (Just a note that to save time, I used my Kitchenaidmixer with beater to make these, and didn’t fold the flour mixture in by hand and they came out fine). The facts Makes 24 possibly more! Time to prepare 15 mins Time to bake 12 mins! Yummy factor 5 stars! Difficulty Easy! Best with A good cup of coffee or tea!

Steve Wright asks…
How safe is your data?? Like it or not computers are part of our every day life. We use them at work, at home and even our trusty mobile phone is in fact a mini computer, with its internet access, email and apps.! So it’s no surprise that more and more of our personal data is being held in databases on computers all across the world. Our Facebook & Twitter accounts give people an idea about our normal day to day life, but more sensitive information such as bank accounts, credit card details, addresses and other personal information is held on the various websites and services that we sign up to on a regular basis.. But how safe is that information, and can we be sure that no one else outside of these companies can access it?! ! We tend to trust these days, that when we enter our personal information onto a site, that data will be securely held on the respective companies servers. But with the recent reports of hackers accessing data from various sites, this is not always the case.! ! We have all heard of a subset of customers information being taken from services such as Sony’s Online gaming network Playstation Plus and other companies like that, but in July of this year Ashley Madison, a Canada based online-dating service 12 •
! marketed to married people, reported that hackers had stolen all of its customer data - including emails, names, home addresses, sexual fantasies and credit card information - and had threatened to post all the data online if Ashley Madison and its sister site EstablishedMen.com wer e not permanently closed. By July 22nd the first names of customers were released, and by August 18th all of the user data was published online. More importantly the data included information from customers who had previously paid Ashley Madison a fee to allegedly have their data deleted. This included customers who had accounts set up against their will, as a workplace prank, or because of a mistyped email address.! The fallout from this has been wide spread with marriages and relationships ruined in an instance, some rightly so and others because of what can only be described as a mistake. There have even been reports of some gay men on the site, in countries
with anti gay laws, having to flee their homes in fear of attacks, imprisonment or in some cases for their lives. ! ! We have the right to expect that when we give a company our personal information online, that it will be kept secure. In fact these companies promise us that when we sign onto their sites and services. So where do we go from here?! Its is imperative that companies make every possible effort to keep our information safe on their servers. Admittedly you can’t stop every dedicated and dogged hacker from breaking into a site. The more security put on the more these people work harder to break it. But surely these large companies and corporations should be putting more effort, and pouring more money into giving us the security we deserve and require.! ! Until then, How safe do you now feel giving your credit information online?! !
!
“What does this mean for the future of sites like Ashley Madison and others who deal with sensitive information.?”
Should we be concerned about what we put on the internet and are people aware of the risks of exposing everything about themselves…?

Chique Dem A new member of the team… Chique will be writing about how you can change your life…
16 •
We are always looking for people to join the team and this lady was recommended by one of our writers. T h i s l a d y w i l l be writing on how fitness changed her life and how it can change yours for the better as well.
!
ChangeYourSize:ChangeYourLife
!
I changed my size and then I changed my life. My world pre weight loss was like I was wearing a sumo-suit on my body and mind. The blurred sensation of eating to my fears content would be a temporary bliss. The belief it felt good was my own mental trap - I always felt destroyed later. It was easy to build myself up with the promise of being good tomorrow, when I was already certain that the eating habits of tomorrow would replicate today’s.
!
Alleviating the sumo-suit was great to see but the real change was in my being. By nature I am a reflective, deep thinker; keen to develop solutions. The link between my body changed and the direction in my life was remarkable. I decided that I couldn’t keep this understanding to myself and became a Personal Trainer. This has geared me to now study to become a Level 5 Life Coach. It is worth the investment if I can help people turn their body barriers into key tools in building the life they desire.
!
Writing used to be a way to deal with myself and my ill thought processes. Now, I write for change, for value and for purpose. Using fitness and writing as my platform, I aim to change lives from the inside out, enhancing the mind to better the body, break social and cultural barriers whilst connecting womankind through our experiences and values.

Kate Henwood Chemo Diaries Chemo 5 +14 Apologies in advance....this is a bit of a rant and a whinge.
the fact that the nail bed is dying underneath them.....2 nails are clearly infected as well as a toenail...I wont go into detail....but I may need them removed.....
Chemo 5 saw a reduced dose of Docetaxel (the chemo bit), because of the negative side effect of the peripheral neuropathy in my fingers and toes. The neuropathy gets worse with each cycle and it did the same this time. I flagged this up to the hospital early on so we wait and see if they reduce it further for the final cycle. Basically I can't feel the tips of two fingers on both hands and have permanent pins and needles in the others. Imagine freezing cold hands that are warming up...it's like that. My toes are similar not as bad but it means I tend to lean back on my heels to get my balance.
The deterioration of my nails has rocked me more than the loss of my hair...it sounds shallow and vain, but I can't hide my hands while I have revolting nails or no nails....6 - 12 months of the constant reminder of what I've gone through.
I was lucky that I managed to preserve my finger and toenails up until now....chemo has caught up with them and they now resemble the nails of a 50-a-day smoker - they are revolting. Add to that 18 •
Today I had my 3 month cardiac check - the Herceptin that I have, and will continue to have for ever, can cause heart damage so these 3 month check ups are vital. All was good so that was a relief. I spiked a temperature last night - the fluey symptoms that I usually get post chemo around day 4/5. I think it was just that I'd over done it yesterday and it WAS cold.....that rang alarm bells at the hospital today so more blood tests done and flagged up to the consultant, along with
!
the deteriorating sensation in my fingers.
where everything tastes awful......this Cancer thing sucks!!
The net result is that my final chemo, that should have been next Thursday (18th) has been deferred to the 25th, to see if the fingers recover a bit before we hit them again. When you do this journey you kind of hang alot of weight on key dates. This has been a real target to aim for....now the flipping goal post has been moved. Gutted doesn't begin to describe how I feel. I understand why...it's just like someone's said "ah well, another week isn't that long". Trust me it is!! The other gutting factor is the fact that where I should have been relatively symptom free for my birthday and weekend away, I'm now going to be at the stage
On the plus side, I've been really lucky with my side effects, I've not had an infection or been hospitalised like a lot of my fellow fighters. So I shouldn't moan. But sometimes you just need to get it out on paper..... Fingers crossed it doesn't get postponed another week - I really don't want chemo on my birthday!!
“Everyone at the magazine greatly admirers Kate and we will support her any way we can.”

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW CHRIS PACKHAM We spoke with the wonderful Chris Packham about animals and life in general. Chris Packham is a TV presenter, photographer and naturalist. He is probably most well know for co-presenting “The Really Wild Show” in 1986 and “The Spring Watch” and “The Autumn Watch.” Chris is also prolific supporter of a large number of animal, conservation and environmental charities. Although he had a very busy work schedule, he still found
28 •
time to chat to me about animals and life in general. In 2010 Chris was awarded the Dilys Breese BTO Medal for “his outstanding work in promoting science to new audiences.” (Chris Packham website.) We felt that he would fit really well in our magazine. FEMINARUM has done previous issues on animals and looked into the conservation and care of the world we live in.
The message is that we must look after our communities both human and animal. No longer will we tolerate the abuse and torture of animals. This lack of humanity towards Nature has to stop.
!
! Q1 What did you want to be as a child..?
!
!
I always wanted to be an astronaut. I have always been fascinated with space and the universe.
!
Q2 How did you first become involved with nature?
!
I was always out and about with my family who encouraged me to take an interest in Nature. As a five year old boy, I had a huge fascination with fossils and dinosaurs.
!!
Q3 What is the best thing about the job you do?
!
The best thing is meeting the wide variety of animals and also learning from experts in their field. There is always something to learn about animals and I am always gathering information about a wide variety of creatures.
! Q4 How do you relax? !
For me I am always on the go but when I do want to unwind, Sci Fi movies and old romances are a great choice. Obviously growing up during the space race, Star Wars and Star Trek are in my collection of genres to watch.
! Q5 What is your favourite animal? !
:If you want to more about Chris and his work, then go to his website: www.chrispackham.co.uk
That is such a tough question but my two Poodle dogs Itchy and Scratchy have to be at the top of my list. I am working at the moment to highlight the plight of the male sparrow hawks so these majestic birds would have to be my favourite wild animal.
!!
Q6 What do you see yourself doing in 5 years time.?
!
I am the type of person who lives for the moment so I don't really think about what I will be doing in the next few years.

A Lush Product Review. I have been a big fan of many of the products that Lush produce. The new Hen Harrier inspired bath bomb is no exception. It's beautiful colours of turquoise and yellow are very eye catching. Many if not all oft he bath bombs have a story behind them. Inspiration is always a key part of any lush creation. The Skydancer, far from the Madding Guns is no exception. This bomb was named by the TV presenter "Chris Packham. Proceeds from the sale of this product will help to fund the Hen Harrier Life + Project to fund satellite tagging. (Lush magazine, Aug 2015)
!
The bath bomb contains bergamot, lemon and cinnamon leaf oils. All of these key elements mix well although it's not as aromatic as other bath bombs. The lemon smell was very fruity and certainly raises
30 •
the spirits. The colours were also very eye catching and it fizzled nicely in the bath. As always it great to know that the money you spend on this product is actually going towards a good cause.
!
This product is defiantly one that I would recommend. It left my skin feeling very clean and it smelt so fresh that my bathroom was filled with its citrus scent for some time.
!
When I first started up the magazine,I took a close look at the way that Lush worked. I really admired their ethical work practices and I hoped that maybe we could take some of their ideas and use them ourselves.
!
The company works with many projects to save and improve the lives of those who's raw ingredients are used by Lush for their products.

TheKatie Rose Diaries Dear Diary, Now that September is coming rapidly to an end I am reluctantly settled into my last year at University. I’m not reluctant because I don’t want to be here, I have enjoyed the routine and the busyness of study but it has come around very quickly and I am already knee deep in work so that I haven’t had much time to think about the end and what I’ll do next. This month I also mark a year with Feminarum, I have been hugely fortunate to be a part of the team and to have been able to write regularly for our wonderful readers. I have enjoyed watching the magazine going from strength to strength and developing its own unique style and voice. During the last month I have been helping with our Fresher’s Week and in particular with our key event – The Fresher’s Fair. Our Fresher’s are our first year students and therefore brand new. It reminded me of when I first arrived at University and how expansive and terrifying the campus felt to me in those first days. I was convinced I’d never settle and now, lo and behold I am hurtling towards graduation without any brakes. 32 •
!
It was a beautiful sunny September day, not a cloud in the sky and as I arrived on campus ready to help set up (very early in the morning) there was a sparkle of dew on the playing fields. I can see my favourite time of year is beginning to show signs of arrival; autumn, the time of year when I can knit and knit to my heart’s content. It’s far too hot in summer to be surrounded by wool and so I tend to stick to sewing and dressmaking. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to craft as much as I’d like to lately, partly because I have been so busy with work and now with adjusting to study again but also because I have had a worrying pain in my hands and arms. Long working days and late studying in the evening have not helped I’m sure but now I play the waiting game to find out what the cause is. Of course, I am hoping that it’ll be something minor and fixable and I’ll be made to feel silly for being so worried. I’m sure that it is a common neurosis for any knitter or skilled craftsperson that one day their hands will give up and they will lose the hobby that they have loved for so long. It’s better to be safe than to be sorry and so I am continuing as best I can as I wait for referral. Best wishes and good health, Katie

The special photoshoot this month was with the lovely Kellie Johnson I first saw Anastasia Nyteshade (AKA Kellie Alice Johnson) on Facebook. At first glance, she did not look like your typical model but that did not justify the abuse she was receiving online. I contacted her and offered to organise a shoot with myself in Chichester on the 19th of September. Kellie arrived on time and she was ready and eager to work. Although only 5ft 3” this was not going to stop us from producing some amazing images. We at FEMINARUM magazine pride ourselves at thinking outside the box and smashing those narrow minded stereotypes that hold women back from achieving their goals. We had a great day shooting and both myself and Kellie decided that the images were worth putting up, just to show what you can achieve when people who have a similar goal work together. When I shoot with models for the magazine, its all about getting the best out of them via the camera. Its easy for me to see the potential in them as everyone is unique and every model brings their own style to each shoot. My time with Kellie was fun and we managed to produce some great images that will look amazing in her portfolio. It just goes to show that although people may not fit the stereotypes that life demands we adhere to, they are just as capable of producing great images. Kellie was a professional all the way through and it was a real joy to work with her. We at FEMINARUM will always want to champion those who feel like they have something to say but don’t have a platform to speak from. (Photos by Double8)

What is going on in the next few issues‌ What does the future hold for the magazine going forward???
!
Due to the massive success of the magazine over the last two years, myself and the team will continually be looking for your stories and creative ideas for the next couple of issues.
!
Of course we have talked a lot about the calendar and our "Beefy Bundle." Which will be coming out at Christmas. As always, the magazine is growing and developing so if there are any issues that you want us to cover, then FB or contact us via the website and social media. We will be pushing the advertising as well so if you know a small company who wants to get their product out to the world, let us know..
38 •
We promised in the beginning to never flood the magazine full of adverts. As a people's magazine, we stand by this and over 85% of the magazine will be filled with articles, photo shoots and exclusive interviews. Also we hope to keep bringing you the lovely Gallery of Guys as well.
!
As always we are looking for people to write for us. It can be a one off or on a regular basis. Please take a look at the previous issues and this will give you an idea about what our readers want to read..
!
We want people to contribute to the next few issues, so if you have a book that you want to share or a story you think our readers would like to hear about, then contact us.
!
As always we will be looking f o r y o u r re t ro s p e c t i v e stories for the November issue. The Christmas issue will be filled with wonderful things that you can make with your children. We had a lot of success with this last year. Our social media was flooded with people sending in their images of the Christmas decorations they had made from the templates we printed in the magazine. There is some thing very wonderful about sharing the Christmas experience with your family. Obviously we will also be looking into the history of some of the well know Christmas traditions. After researching about mince pies, I had no idea that it is still illegal to eat them at Christmas. Its amazing what you learn once you start to look into things!!! But we are jumping ahead of ourselves..November will be filled with wonderful articles looking at this season and also reflecting on what has been going on in 2015. I will be doing an article looking behind the story of Guy Fawkes and his
attempts to blow up Parliament. In the current climate of terrorism and cyber crime, could it happen again. You only have to look at 9/11 for the answer to this question. The magazine has again been nominated for a local award. We won last year and are hoping to do so this year. We will keep you updated on the course of events so fingers crossed.. The magazine prides itself o having some wonderful images on our front covers. There will be an abstract f ro n t c o v e r i m a g e f o r November which is very eye-catching.
“If you want to write for the magazine, then please contact us. We are happy to hear from anyone with a story they want to tell.”
I will be talking to the photographer on the inspiration behind the image and how he achieved this masterpiece. So we look forward to hearing from everyone in the next few months…
