Adirondacks & Great Camps For the Adirondack collection, the inspiration was aspiration. By definition, Double D Ranch is a western lifestyle brand, so it makes sense that the East Coast doesn’t commonly have a large presence in our design story. But we’ve long held an appreciation for the aesthetic. “I’ve always had books on the Adirondacks and the Great Camps,” said Double D Ranch designer, Cheryl McMullen. “The architecture, the craftsmanship, the furnishings, even the lifestyle. It all seemed so foreign to me, growing up in a little dusty, hot South Texas town, so of course, I found it all intriguing and alluring. They built what they considered ‘cottages’, but were essentially these enormous architecturally rustic mansions constructed of knotty pines and field stone. It just all felt so grand, but very charming and playful at the same time, almost like a playhouse. Like Marjorie Merriweather Post, effortlessly elegant, but inviting. That was what I wanted to convey with this collection.” Adirondacks, the third installment of the Heritage Departures collection, celebrates the richness of the region, literally and figuratively, in terms of wealth, beauty, and history. It features luxe velvets and furs, dimensional details, and Iroquois-inspired embellishments. It’s aspirational East Coast vibes. It’s effortless elegance. It’s leisure in luxury.

Trade Silver Trade Beads & Silver Antique and unique, Hudson Bay silver crosses are one-of-akind creations with a long history, some dating back up to four centuries. From about the mid-17th century to the early 19th century, there was a robust trade in the upper East Coast region in which Europeans would often barter trinkets of silver to the indigenous people of the area in exchange for furs. Another commodity was colorful African or Venetian trade beads, which would then be fashioned into necklaces, with the crosses as pendants. While many of the trade bead necklaces you’ll find these days are replicas, we have collected a few authentic antique pieces as well as worked with artisans using actual vintage trade beads paired with contemporary silverwork. There are a number of artisans keeping the traditional style alive.

Cabin Fever We’ve all felt pretty cooped up the last year-and-a-half, and our first inclination was to get outside, to wander. But there’s more than one way to cure cabin fever. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big proponent for travel; for seeing as much of this wide world as you can,” Cheryl said. “But when you think about it, many of our warmest, most indelible memories are made within our own homes. It’s where loved ones gather for birthdays, for holidays. It’s where pre-prom pictures are taken and hands are asked for in marriage and grandbabies get spoiled. And we essentially get to create the background for those memories. I think that’s why, especially for mothers and matriarchs, there is such joy and fulfillment that comes with decorating the home, particularly for the holidays. My credo is always, ‘exciting and inviting’, styled but not stiff.” Cabin fever doesn’t always mean you need to get out of your house; perhaps it means you need to invite some special people into it.

“Not all people feel they need to have wilderness, but I do. If things go bad and everything seems to go wrong, the best place to go is right into the remote wilderness, and everything’s in balance there.” – Clarence Petty

Folk Art: Pyrography The ancient art of pyrography – literal translation, “writing with fire” – dates back in some Egyptian and African tribes to the beginning of recorded human history. As the name implies, the technique involves the intricate use of a heated object (a “poker” or nib) to freehand a design onto another material, most often wood or leather. The designs vary in degree of detail and depth from primitive outlines to elaborate lifelike images, achieved by applying different temperatures or pressures to the medium. Wood pyrography works are then usually colored or painted to complete the aesthetic of the art, and some are even embellished with beads or other adornments for an added element of dimension. Pyrography folk art was abundant in the Great Camps cabins; we diligently hand-selected each of these vintage creations to complement the collection.

Wall Full of Whimsy From pouches to pin cushions, a whimsy is a beautiful, beaded memento of Iroquois ingenuity and turning souvenirs into survival. The Iroquois tribes were indigenous to the East Coast of present-day United States and southeastern Canada, a hub for the arrival of European tourists who quickly became intrigued by the impressive craftsmanship of the native peoples. There became an increase in demand for Native American curios, and the Iroquois women saw the opportunity to capitalize on the influx of travelers by creating souvenirs to commemorate their experiences. Thus, the whimsy was born. A whimsy can take many forms, from picture frames to purses to boxes; and shapes, such as birds, boots, berries, stars, hearts, etc. They’re all hand-beaded in a dimensional, bumped-out style that is unique to this trade, and typically annotate an event, a place, a date, or a sentiment. “A lot of people collect vintage whimsies, myself included,” Cheryl said. “I fell into the allure of these unique little creations probably 25 years ago, and have been collecting them ever since; I would estimate 300 pieces or more. Some of them will belong to me forever, but I am parting with some of them so they can be appreciated in new homes; they’re too beautiful to sit in storage.” The assortment of styles and shapes is so vast, there’s a whimsy for everyone!

Olive & Wine We’re not talking cabernet and canapes – although we love that combination, too! – we’re talking a dynamic duo of hues that are bringing a richness to the runway this season. “The key to this color combination is balance,” explained Cheryl. “Olive alone can sometimes come across drab, but when you bring in accents of that burgundy wine hue, it compliments and transforms into a look that’s luxe and rich. In this particular jacket, the pattern and texture also contribute to that vibe – not to mention the lush fur collar – but it’s a good rule of thumb for wearing and pairing this season.” Shouldn’t be too hard to remember, right? From hors d’oeuvres to outfits, olive and wine is a winning combination.

“The operation of my household is the result of careful planning over many years. Each house is an entity, with its own equipment for that particular spot and environment. I’ve been doing this kind of thing since I was 18, and it rolls right off my back.” – Marjorie Merriweather Post,

Tramp Art Turned Fashion One of the things that makes fashion such a unique form of expression is the way it can interpret the textures and techniques of other artforms into garment design. The term “tramp art” refers to a woodworking style that was most prevalent during the Great Depression, characterized by chip or notch carving and layering of geometric shapes. As was often the case in that era of financial hardship, artisans crafted their works from whatever wood materials were affordable or available to them, such as cigar boxes or shipping crates. Creations were most often in the form of boxes or dimensional frames, though you can find some rare tramp art pieces in sculpture styles and furniture. Tramp art pieces had a heavy presence in the Adirondacks Great Camps that influenced this collection. “With the Tramp Art Jacket, we wanted to capture the essence of that aesthetic,” Cheryl explained. “Rather than wood, we used contrasting leather lacing to recreate the geometric and dimensional appeal of tramp art against a canvas of soft suede. And then adding the rounded metallic studs complemented the straight-edges of the leather shapes for an all-around American crafted look.” Once again, a wearable work of art.
