Arizona Highways, Early Spring 2019

Arizona Highways Sometimes, you’ve just got to grab the girls and go. It may not be planned. It may not even be practical. But something, some indescribable, inexplicable thing tells you, “we’ve got to hit the open road”. So many of my childhood memories stem from westward road trips along Route 66. From passing the WigWam Motel and dreaming of getting to stay there someday. From stopping at roadside truck stops and coveting the most kitschiest of things – a beaded headband, a Native Americanstyle necklace – and my sister and I begging for them so relentlessly that our parents finally conceded. I don’t remember where we were going, I don’t remember what we did when we got there, but I vividly recall those moments along the way. This collection is an ode to the road-trippers. The gals who still pack snacks and make playlists and map out historic sites. Those who know that a great pair of boots, a good tube of lipstick, and a full tank of gas are all they really need. It’s an ode to truck stop souvenirs, to the accidental memories made from missed exits and wrong turns, to the candid and careless snapshot photos that will eternally transport you back to a time and place that you can always revisit but never recreate. This is for you, the modern-day Thelmas and Louises, who understand that adversity is really adventure, if you just tilt your head and squint a little. And above all, we dedicate this catalog to the Double D Ranch Wolf Pack, a group of incredible women who consistently remind us what style, courage, camaraderie, and adventure really looks like.

Turquoise & Coral Signature Southwestern Style When you think of stones in Southwestern and Native American jewelry, your first thought is probably turquoise – and rightfully so, it’s the most prevalent and it’s almost synonymous with the style. But turquoise has a stylistic “sister-stone” that, once you think about it, is a common and key asset to some of the most beautiful and beloved pieces. Coral, and more specifically, “red coral” accompanies turquoise in Native American jewelry almost as often as not. In many instances, coral even stands alone as the colorful feature in a piece of silverwork, and research indicates that it has been used in jewelry-making since before recorded history. Featured together in everything from cuffs to conches and bolos to bracelets, and the cool turquoise juxtaposed with the warm coral makes for an eye-catching combination that is signature Southwestern style.

Go Retro Go Red We are in love with this look that Lisa Martinson – DDR’s make-up artist for more than 25 years – calls “Retro Modern”. And, as all things road trip should be, minimalism is the name of the game. The premise behind this look is bare face, bold brow, brave lip.

Eye: Just a hint of tint Consider using a highlighter rather than a shadow. Skip the liner and mascara, and instead emphasize the brow.

Face: Let it shine Skip the powder and foundation; at most rub in a tinted moisturizer with SPF and call it good! Cheek: Demure does it rms’ lip-to-cheek color is aptly named “Demure” and it’s just that. Just a subtle blush to brighten and give a youthful glow. Lip: Go retro red We love MAC’s Ruby Woo lip because it’s not too matte and not too shiny, and isn’t trying to be anything but classic.

Souvenier Styling As mentioned in the intro, memories of a dogged pursuit of kitschy souvenirs permeate my childhood. Double D Ranch collaborated with Peyote Bird Designs to create a line of covetable jewelry that while elevated in elegance, mimics that sought-after souvenir style . With its familiar forms and symbolic shapes – from teepees to cacti to feathers dotted with turquoise, leather lanyards and beaded thunderbird pendants these pieces are far from truck stop trinkets - we intended them to satisfy the aesthetic of the “adult you” as well as the nostalgia of novelty so beloved by “little you.”

The Ultimate Western Itinerary Historic Route 66 will take you coast to coast, but we’re most interested in it taking us West. And in this particular issue, we are most interested in Arizona. Of course, if you’re driving through Arizona, you should try to take a minute to see the Grand Canyon and the Petrified Forest, but there are also many lesser-known gems along the highway. Here is our Arizona “Top 6 on Route 66” OATMAN, ARIZONA: This tiny town is almost a wrinkle in time. You can periodically spot Model Ts out for leisurely drives, staged gun fights on the weekend, and most uniquely, wild (but tame) burros meander down into the town every morning to greet the tourists and beg for food, and then wander back up to the mountains around sunset. Delgadillos Snow Cap Drive-In: What a kitschy little joint! Constructed from old railway scrap lumber, this drive-in burger joint is dripping in both grease and snark. Guests enter through a door with a pair of trick knobs (one works, one doesn’t) and then are greeted with punny banter from descendants of late Juan Delgadillo who built it in 1953. Wigwam Motel: This roadside wonder is obviously a form-over-function attraction, with novelty outweighing amenities, but c’mon, you can’t deny the appeal of staying in your very own wigwam, just once, just to say that you did. We also highly recommend spending some time in Kingsman, visiting the Mohave and Arizona Route 66 museums and souvenir shopping at the Hackberry General Store, and “takin’ it easy” at Standin’ on a Corner Park in Winslow.

Pack Hacks BOOTS No one keeps their shoes on for the entirety of a road trip. But no one wants to wait on you to put them back on at the next stop, either. Solution: Boots. You can go from barefoot on the dash to pitstop ready in a matter of seconds. Not to mention, you look the part of Americana road warrior! HAIRBANDS You’re going to want to crank up the music and crank down the windows, and as much fun as it is to feel the wind whip through your hair, it gets real old real, real fast. You’ll be glad you brought something to manage your mane. SNACKS This one should probably go without saying, because if you’ve been roadtripping without snacks up to this point: you’re doing it all wrong! Some of our favorite go-tos are beef jerky, sunflower seeds, white cheddar popcorn, and a little something sweet. Pro tip: Also bring bottled water. Always. SOUNDTRACK We vote tunes (see page 64), but maybe you’re more into podcasts or audiobooks. Whatever it is, make sure it’s downloaded queued up BEFORE you hit the road, or you’re going to be battling lulls and lags as it tries to keep up with spotty service and dragging data speeds.

Mile Marker Music What goes on your playlist is almost as personal as what goes in your suitcase, so we’re not here to tell you what to listen to, but we have compiled a list of classic (and fairly obvious) road-trip themed songs to get you started! “Take It Easy” – The Eagles “Route 66” – Chuck Berry “Going Up the Country” – Canned Heat “Life is a Highway” – Tom Cochrane (p.s. Chris LeDoux also did a great remake) “Fast Car” – Tracy Chapman “On the Road Again” – Willie Nelson “King of the Road” – Roger Miller “Here I Go Again” – White Snake “Every Day Is a Winding Road” – Sheryl Crow “Ticket to Ride” – Beatles “Runnin’ Down a Dream” – Tom Petty “I’ve Been Everywhere” – Johnny Cash “Ramblin’ Man” – Allman Brothers “Running on Empty” – Jackson Brown “Go” - The Runaway Hamsters
