Welcome to Banff The final installment of our Heritage Departures collections was inspired by a place that’s far from home but near to our heart. “Our family trip to Banff is one of those experiences that had an indelible impact on me,” said Double D Ranch designer, Cheryl McMullen. “There was a beauty and an essence to that area that resonated with me, and I think I always knew I would channel that into design at some point. I’m extremely pleased with and proud of the Banff collection; it brought to life some design dreams that I’ve had for a long time, and it has exceeded my expectations in every way.” The famously luxurious Canadian ski town was the impetus for an equally luxurious holiday collection full of luxe leathers, rich velvets, and for the first time, cashmere. The embroidery is exquisite, the embellishments are eye-catching, and the color palette is simplified and sophisticated, featuring warm browns, greyed blues, and soft whites, reminiscent of a snowy winter day. Banff introduces new bedding, holiday décor, and exciting additions to our Turquoise Travel Series. Settle in with the catalog and cup of cocoa, and bask in the beauty of Banff.

Natural & Neutral The term “neutral” tends to evoke images of greys and beiges and blacks, but in fashion, what defines a neutral is that it goes with everything; that it works, no matter how you wear and pair it. To Double D Ranch, turquoise is a neutral. “There are many factors contributing to what makes turquoise so ubiquitous,” said Cheryl. “One, is that it’s so versatile that it can go from rough-form nugget necklaces to ultra-polished cabochons that are set alongside diamonds. Another is the spectrum of hues that naturally occur in turquoise; from baby blues from the Sleeping Beauty Mine to deep rich green shades from the Royston, you can complement such a wide range of your wardrobe. Think of it as a chameleon color.” We’ve said it for years, we even wrote it into our mission statement: we believe turquoise goes with dang near anything.

Winter White Warm up your wardrobe with winter white. When done correctly, winter white is one of the most elegant shades of the season, breathing a freshness into the greys and browns and blacks that one tends to rely on in the colder weather months. It’s sophisticated, polished, and almost effortlessly upscale. “Gone are the days of not daring to wear white of any sort between Labor Day and Easter,” explained Cheryl. “While we personally encourage everyone to wear whatever makes them feel good every day of the year, there are nuances to white that can make it feel more seasonally appropriate, particularly texture and tone.” You’ll find that most winter whites are just a shade or two off stark white, they tend to have a hint of cream or eggshell or even a taupe to them, which curbs that super-summery feel. Additionally, they’ll usually be in heavier fabrics, like suedes and leathers and wools, that are more suited for the chillier temps of the season. Also, the embellishments can add to the vibe of a garment, like adding fur to the collar or cuff. There are subtleties to winter white, for sure, but the only fashion rule we steadfastly follow is that confidence is key.

In Stitches One of the strong and pervasive style stories of this season is the eye-catching embroidery. For starters, it’s very unique. It’s not actually a floral, more of a scrolling stem of leaves, but it has that same romantic feel to it, and the intricacy of bringing those different hues together on such a fine scale and yet not making it feel busy is a very delicate balance. “The inspiration for this design actually came from an old vintage French court frock coat,” Cheryl said. “It’s one of those things that I’ve had in my design archives for quite some time, but I had to be patient in waiting for it to feel like a natural fit, this isn’t a pattern that could be forced. It wouldn’t work in a collection with really vibrant colors, it would be too much, but since Banff is in a palette of soft and sophisticated shades, it came out beautifully.” It’s exquisite and it’s everywhere. It’s prominent on this season’s statement jacket, the Alberta Jacket, but you’ll also see it carried throughout on tees, tops, and even boots.

Deck The Halls As universal as the holiday spirit is, the décor is entirely individual. “There is no right way to decorate a tree,” Cheryl said. “Sometimes it’s rooted in tradition or nostalgia. There was one year as the kids were nearing graduation that we did a tree entirely of their homemade ornaments from their school years, and lord knows there were a handful of their toddler years that our tree was bottom-heavy because they really wanted to help. But at this phase of my life, and as a designer, there is a satisfaction to getting to curate the tree and coordinate the décor.” If you’re struggling to style your surroundings, here are some pro tips: STICK WITH A SCHEME “Much like this collection, my color scheme is not exactly monochromatic, but it stays in a wintery scheme – silvers, golds, winter whites and greyed blues. I think it lends a striking sophistication and a focused feel. I carry that into my wrapping as well, it all coordinates and feels very cohesive.” UNEXPECTED ORNAMENTS “I’ve waxed poetic about my love of whimsies, and my tree is one of my favorite ways to display them. I have collected so many over the years that I’m able to suit every scheme, so I just add a hook to them and add them in. Honestly, that’s probably when they get the most attention; people are always fascinated by what one hangs on their tree.” SUBTLE SPARKLE “You have to have a little glitz. Mercury glass is one of my favorite ways to add sparkle with a nice vintage feel, but I also love to incorporate classic glittered ball ornaments or even tiny mirrored disco-like balls that reflect the lights from the tree, something subtle that just spreads the spirit of the season.”

We also created stockings for several years for Neiman Marcus catalogs. For this series of stockings, we mirrored the chic sophistication of the Banff collection in a warm, wintery color palette and a finish of faux fur. I call it ‘collecting’, but my sisters like to tease that it’s ‘hoarding’; either way, I have decades-worth of pieces that I want to have organized and all in one place, and I’m sure I can’t be the only one! So I designed this multi-level jewelry chest with movable – and removable – trays and ring bars and cuff cases and squash strap-downs, so that it’s completely customizable.” We are simply ‘tickled turquoise’ at how all these problem-solving pieces turned out. Did we mention they make great presents? Providing a solution – and doing it with style – is the gift that keeps on giving.

How can we create a look that is aesthetically impressive but is also irresistible to want to curl up in? There is something inexplicably cozy and comforting about plaid, so that provides the inviting aspect; we did it in a sophisticated color scheme and balanced it with luxe velvets and ornate embroidery, which provides the element of elegance.
